Google’s redesigned the Android Market, now easier to find great apps

    0

We love Android to death, but one thing that’s really been bugging us since day one is how difficult it is to find great apps, as well as the meh design of the market. Well, our prayers have been answered, as Google has overhauled the Anroid market and has made it even easier to find the right apps for you. The home page has been visually cleaned and spruced up, and it’s now easier to navigate than ever before. Purchasing and dowloading an app is also easier, and the redesign has made it so that you’ll be able to grab the stuff you want in as little as two steps. The new client is now starting to roll out to Android 2.2 devices and higher, and Eric Chu, Android Developer Ecosystem says that “the update should reach all users worldwide in the coming weeks”. You can see a sneak peek of what the new experience looks like in the video embedded below.

Meet Balance: Propellerhead’s first audio interface

    0

Propellerhead has recently announced their first hardware audio interface, Balance, which will be released alongside Reason Essentials and the all new and updated Reason 6.

The Swedish-based company has gained its following for their award winning software, Reason, a music production program first unveiled in November 2000. It revolutionized computer-based music because it provided an array of quality synthesizers, samplers and other audio tools that weren’t greedy on system resources. Furthermore, it offered a sleek and distinct graphical interface modeled after vintage hardware. (screenshot below)

With a solid reputation in creating stellar software, what does Propellerhead have to offer in their first hardware product?

Balance is 2-in / 2-out  audio interface that is USB2 powered and features 8 input connections, allowing users to keep their gear connected and ready to record with the press of a button. One of its flagship features is “Clip Safe”, a new technology that can clean up distorted recordings, which is said to be achieved by recording “ghost” digital audio tracks and dynamic information.

While there are  a plethora of choices among audio interfaces which offer more advanced features, Balance has a chance to stand out because of its distinct design. However, this author is wondering why a software-based company hasn’t included MIDI functionality on their interface, which would seem like the most logical step to integrate all their products.

Balance is officially available on September 30, 2011. In the meantime, enjoy the teaser videos below.

Razer Mouse Bungee keeps your mouse cord off your desk and your sights on target

    0

At first glance, the Razer Mouse Bungee looks like a superfluous product. But if you’ve ever missed a headshot, or a critical cap because of unsightly, tangled wires, you’ll find that it’s an invaluable tool for hardcore gamers. It works by keeping the cord of your mouse from dragging or tangling on objects and surfaces that might mess up your aim, especially in competitive FPS where a critical shot means the difference between winning and getting teabagged by the opposite team. The bungee is weighed down so it stays rock solid even after extended gaming sessions. It’ll retail for about $19.99, though no local pricing has been set.

Cosmic Panda: the new face of YouTube

    0

First there was Google+, now and to keep the ball rolling on more newfangled sites, Google has introduced a new YouTube redesign.

“Cosmic Panda” which boasts A New Experience for Videos, Playlists, and Channels takes on a much darker note with its dark gray background as opposed to the plain white original design. The video screen is also much larger, taking up the center of the page while browsing options, related videos, and comments are on the bottom. So from what was once split into two columns has become a row in design, giving more space and attention to the main video. This way, the page looks less cramped and more organized.

Feedback is encouraged so check it out for yourselves and see if this cute little panda can’t win you over.

Globe proposes 3-year plan to reduce interconnection rates

    0

Here’s some good news: your cellphone bill may be cheaper in the future, if Globe has its way. In a press release sent earlier today, Globe Telecom told us that they have submitted a position paper detailing its proposal on reducing fees for subscribers calling and sending texts outside their respective networks. In the paper, Globe suggested a 3-year “glide path” implementation method beginning January 31, 2012. The proposal outlines a reduction in interconnection charges for voice calls at P2.50 for the first year, P2.00 on the second year, and P1.50 on the third year. For SMS, charging is P0.25 on the first year, P0.20 on the second year and P0.15 on the third year. “Globe is in full support of NTC’s call to lower domestic interconnect rates among telcos. In fact, Globe also supports mobile to landline interconnection and vice versa, where interconnection fees should also be reduced. This way, subscribers will experience lower service charges,” said Atty. Froilan Castelo, Head for Corporate and Legal Services Group of Globe. “So as to give ample time for Globe to adjust its tariffs and billing system, Globe requests the NTC to implement these new charges by January 2012.”

15 minute Bioshock Infinite video makes us want the game right now

    0

We’re massive fans of the Original Bioshock, a game that automatically became one of our all time favorites because of its unique setting, story and gameplay elements. So it’s not surprising that we’re pretty stoked for Bioshock Infinite. Though not a direct sequel, the game has the same design and gameplay elements as the previous one. Also, it takes place in a floating city in 1912. If that’s not enough to pique your interest in this game, the awesome, gameplay demonstration from E3 might. On display in the demo are zeppelins, floating cities, freaking awesome zip rides along rails and a massive bird/boss that would make any big daddy wet his already soaking pants. We’ve embedded a presentation of Gametrailers TV below, but if you want a more actiony and less talky version, you can hit up the official Bioshock Infinite page here.

Interact with a 360VR image of Discovery

If you’ve ever wanted to know what it’s like to be inside a space ship, here’s your chance, via 3d imaging.

Click here to interact with an amazing 360-degree panoramic image of the Space Shuttle Discovery, which is one of NASA’s famous orbiters, having traveled a total of “238 million km in 39 missions, completed 5,830 orbits, and spent 365 days in orbit in over 27 years.” [sltrib]

Having been recently decommissioned and now currently under decontamination, the Discovery will be given to the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum for the public to marvel at. However, for those of us that are unable to see it in all its splendor and glory, this interactive image is the next best thing.

Shot by Jook Leung, this amazing panoramic image completely captures both the magnificence and the complexity of a space shuttle. Despite the reputation of science to be mechanical and technical, anybody with an eye for what is beautiful would be hard pressed not to find these images fascinating.  As surprising as it may seem, if inspired by the right vision, it is possible to romanticize technology after all.

LG and Gameloft is bringing 3D gaming to the Optimus 3D

    3

Seems like Korean giant LG is flexing its mobile gaming and 3D muscles – a press release sent earlier today tells us that LG is shipping its newest smartphone, the Optimus 3D in Korea with 17 stereoscopic 3D games in tow courtesy of the gang at Gameloft. The Optimus 3D is one of the few smartphones currently in the market that can do glasses-less 3D. That little fact isn’t lost on LG. “The era of dedicated handheld gaming platform is over,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “Today’s smartphones have the horsepower to compete with the best portable gaming devices and LG Optimus 3D is our proof. We think 3D is the natural next step in portable entertainment and LG is eager to throw its hat in the ring with the Optimus 3D and Gameloft’s ‘must-be-seen-to-be-believed’ titles.”

Full versions of 3 3D games (Asphalt 6: Adrenaline, N.O.V.A. — Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance and Let’s Golf! 2) will be pre-installed in the Optimus 3D when it ships, and other similar titles from Gameloft can be had at a nice discount. Based on a special, regional purchase agreement between LG and Gameloft, LG Optimus 3D users in Asia will be able to download games for free amongst them Assassin’s Creed: Altaïr’s Chronicles; GT Racing: Motor Academy; Shrek Kart; Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus; Real Football 2011; and Star Battalion. At 50% off for 3 months, users will also be able to download James Cameron’s Avatar; N.O.V.A. 2 — Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance ; Dungeon Hunter 2; Fishing Kings; BackStab; Eternal Legacy; and Shadow Guardian. Archer Craft, an LG produced S-3D game, will also be available as a free download.

We’re expecting our review unit of the Optimus 3D soon and we’ll be able to tell you if it’s worth it.

    Review: Razer Anansi

I’m a pretty heavy MMO player, and it’s probably safe to say that I’m currently mildly addicted to Wargaming.net’s recent MMO offering World of Tanks. Unfortunately I noticed after an extended gaming session that my old keyboard wasn’t up to snuff anymore, and needed to be upgraded. As luck would have it, Razer sent over one of their Anansi MMO Gaming keyboards to test, and it’s been working out great so far.

The Anansi resides in expert category of Razer products (the others being essential and elite), which is basically a fancy way of saying that it’s a product intended for the mid-end. The Anansi is optimized for the MMO crowd, and as such has a number of programmable keys for people to map extra functions and abilities to. The whole thing is pretty massive and measures in at 515x190x22mm. The overall feel of the keyboard is pretty good, and it’s probably one of the heaviest keyboards I’ve used, which means the chances of it shifting during play is close to zero.

Aside from the seven(!) programmable keys near the bottom of the keyboard, every key is backlighted, including the 5 additional keys to the left of the keyboard. The function keys also pull double duty as media controls by using them with the FN keys. The Anansi is also able to lock-out the Windows key – which prevents you from tabbing out of a match when you’re just about to bring the hammer down on an unsuspecting fool.

There are usually two types of keyboard architecture – membrane and mechanical. Mechanical keys give users better tactile feedback when pressing a key, as opposed to membrane keyboards that feel soft and squishy. The Anansi is a membrane keyboard, though it feels much better and is more responsive to similar keyboards of its type in the market. The keys themselves have a nice, rubbery texture to them, and the wide wrist rest gives maximum comfort.

Like other products in the Razer family, users can customize the Anansi to their liking. You can change the backlight to whatever color you want, or just have it cycle through the available colors. But the real star of the show has got to be the seven customizable keys on the bottom, that you can use as macros or combo keys (like alt+ctrl). I have the four top keys of mine mapped to different repair instructions in WoT, and the Spy’s different disguises in Team Fortress 2. You can always switch out different gaming profiles easily through the Razer configurator.

I do have a few complaints though – one is that the Anansi doesn’t have ports for USB devices and headphone jacks. While this may seem like a strange request for regular keyboards, there’s a number of gaming keyboards that have this functionality (Razer’s own Tarantula has it). Another is that the Anansi takes up two USB slots on my rig – one for the keyboard and one for lighting. It might seem like a small thing, but for someone who has a multitude of other devices plugged via USB (mice, joystick, audio, printers, etc.) it’s a major consideration.

Ultimately the question you’re going to ask yourself before you buy the Anansi is this: is it worth the money? Specifically, is it worth the Php 5,299 sticker price? Well, if you’re more of a casual gamer that plays games occasionally, then give this a pass. If you’re someone who wants to dominate your MMO of choice, in short, someone who wants to win – then the Anansi is well worth it.

    What’s Hot:

    Fully customizable

Backlit color can be changed to user preference

    Responsive

    Solid as a rock

    What’s Not:

    Pricey

    Uses 2 USB ports

    Bottomline:

The Anansi gives gamers the edge over their opponents in MMOs – for a price.

    Haute Couture that defies gravity

Coco Chanel once said, “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” Now I suppose if you want to take fashion to a whole new breadth, depth, and height in this reigning age of technology, you will need to find techniques that adopt ways that can give more than what your average sewing machine can.

Enter Dutch designer Iris Van Herpen (and designer for the late Alexander Mcqueen) and her eccentric and almost outlandish if not out of this world Fall 2011 collection which used 3D rapid laser prototyping techniques to create her monochromatic haute couture. The construction and design take on a very futuristic element (something one very hot space alien could definitely rock or perhaps your typical human female say in the year 3000) and look like they defy the laws of physics with the way they frame the body rather than attach to it.

Google+Facebook might be malware, uninstall instructions inside

    5

Last night we pimped a cool browser add-on called Google+Facebook that promised that you’ll be able to see your Facebook stream inside your Google+ account. Well, we’ve gotten word that it might be malware, according to reddit user RogueDarkJedi who mucked around in the code. He notes that “This addon acts like malware and the service is a security vulnerability waiting to happen.” Specifically, the code itself breaks a couple of established coding norms, including several privacy no-nos. “Your FB data does go through their service. They don’t have a privacy policy or a terms of service (which is surprising considering they’ve been around for a couple of months). This should be a red flag.”

For their part, Crossrider CEO Koby Menachemi jumped in and addressed the situation, and basically says that the app is safe. RougeDarkJedi still disagrees, so we guess it’s up to the user to make the choice of using the add-on. For users who did install but want to take it out here are the instructions:

    FIREFOX:

Uninstall the add-on via the Firefox add-ons manager.

    Go to about:config.

Reset all the values in about: config for the following:

    • browser.search.selectedEngine
    • browser.search.defaulturl
    • browser.search.defaultenginename
    • keyword.URL

    CHROME:

    Go to tools.

    Select extensions.

    Select Google+Facebook and hit uninstall.

    IE9

    Press alt, select tools.

    Click on manage extensions.

    Find Google+Facebook and press disable.

Lomo releases new colors for Sprocket Rocket

    1

Originally only available in classic black and white, Lomograpy’s Sprocket Rocket now has four new neon colors: bright yellow, orange, green and blue.

For those that aren’t entirely familiar with sprocket-hole photography, this is an art form which includes the small rectangular holes normally found on the outer edges of film. These holes are what ensure that the film moves smoothly from its canister and within the camera.

The Sprocket Rocket, helps its users achieve this type of photography, with the help of a 30mm wide lens. The camera also features the ability to capture multiple exposures via its intuitive scrolling knobs.

To see sample images of their new colors, either click the photo or the link below:
