    Firefox 5 Sneak Peek

    Even before Firefox 4’s arrival, the Mozilla UI team has already been giddy working on Firefox 5, which is due to be released later this year. Here is a quick sneak peek of some of the new features:

    Site-specific Browser

    This mockup from Conceivably Tech illustrates a very interesting feature that introduces site-specific browsing to Firefox, giving dedicated tabs to specific sites. Web apps are the future and Mozilla attempts to deal with this by turning website tabs into apps, each with its own drop down set of actions. This is a spin off feature from Mozilla’s Prism Project.

    New Search Engine field

    Search field looks nicer and it will now be tab specific. The colors of the search button actually reflects the dominant color of the favicon.

    Firefox Sync

    They’re also actually promoting the Firefox Sync which lets users access their passwords and bookmarks across different devices.

    A robust Add-on manager

    The add-on manager shows where your add-ons came from– third-party apps or self-installed.

    Check out this fantastic video demonstration of the new BlackBerry PlayBook ‘Scrapbook’ application, currently being shown at MWC 2011.

    This app allows users to create fun and exciting scrapbook-style montages. The video shows how photos and captions can be created and manipulated with ease, by using up to four fingers on the touchscreen simultaneously.   The app was built by The Astonishing Tribe, which was recently acquired by RIM.

    FlipYourProfile, is a new Facebook app cum browser plugin that allows you to replace your profile photo with a video. Sounds awesome, right? It’s actually Cisco’s and DDB Singapore’s promotional campaign for Flip video cameras.

    There are two steps you would have to follow if you want a video profile. First, have the plugin installed. It is compatible with Chrome, Safari, Internet Explorer, and Firefox. Without the plugin, you won’t be able to see videos, which means if you want others to see your video profile, you have to convince them to have the plugin as well. Secondly, you have to run the Facebook app, which can be found HERE. A notification will be posted to your wall to prompt you that it’s active.

    Shoot and send video by e-mailing a video from your Flip Video cam to [email protected], or by using the Profile Maker to shoot a video using your webcam or to upload an existing video. Be mindful that it should be less than 10MB using the following supported formats: .flv, .mp4, h.264.

    NVIDIA announces Quad core Tegra processor at MWC, will be available in tablets in August and phones in Christmas 2011

    If you didn’t think that smartphones and tablets were ridiculously fast enough, along comes NVIDIA and their insanely fast Quad core Tegra processors just unveiled at the Mobile World Congress at Barcelona, Spain. Not only did NVIDIA announce the existence of the new processor, it had a live demo unit to show off. In a blog post at the official NVIDIA site, Project Kal-El (the codename of the project) was detailed in full, including benchmark scores showing off the impressive power of the new tech. The demo included a 1440p video running on a 2560×1600 panel enabling mobile devices to output to the highest resolution monitors or tablets equipped with a 10.1-inch display with 300 DPI.     Victoria Beckham’s 24-carat solid gold iPhone

    She’s known for being Posh Spice, the wife of one of the most talented soccer players and for having a massive collection of Birkin bags the world has ever seen.

    Now she can add “gold iPhone owner” to that list.

    Last month, Victoria Beckham was seen in London holding on to a gold iPhone 4. Last week, she was caught in transit between London and New York sporting the same luxury device.

    Prior to Beckham’s unit, photos of a platinum and gold iPhone (allegedly bought by a sheik) circulated on the internet.

    Created by Stuart Hughes, the solid gold, 150-gram, 24-carat iPhone was started and finished by hand and priced at £21,995 (about PhP 1,539,650). Hughes is a known creator of luxury items, some of which are a solid platinum iPad with diamond-studded Apple logo

    and a 22-carat, solid gold Nintendo Wii.

    IBM’s Watson crushes human opposition in Jeopardy, robot uprising not far behind?

    While IBM’s current supercomputer/future human slavemaster Watson isn’t the first one to go mano-a- mano against a human opponent in a game that’s not inside a computer (that honor goes to Deep Blue after beating Chess World Champion Garry Kasparov), it’s the first time a computer goes up against a human linguistically. What’s scary/fascinating about this is that Watson can analyze the English language and understand the meaning of complex sentences and respond accordingly – in this case in the form of Jeopardy answers.

    The result? Watson absolutely creamed two Jeopardy pros in the first day of competition with Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter only managing to earn a paltry sum of $2,400 and $5,400, respectively. In contrast, Watson earned a whopping $35,734. Watson’s participation in Jeopardy isn’t just for collecting prize money (the overall winner of the game will earn $1 million dollars), it’s a real tech demonstration of what IBM’s technology can do for real world applications and analytics, as the same tech that made its Jeopardy victory possible can one day allow ordinary computers to understand the nuance of human speech.

    That’s assuming that Skynet doesn’t become self-aware.

    Release of Coca-Cola’s Secret Recipe Crashes Website Servers

    I don’t drink a lot of soda, but I have been to the World of Coca-Cola in Atlanta, Georgia where they give visitors a tour of the factory and treat them to unlimited Coca-Cola products at the end. But throughout this tour, there is one secret that they don’t reveal: the recipe of the world’s most popular drink.

    This American Life, a public radio program hosted by Ira Glass, made the announcement last Friday where they discovered a photograph in 1979 showing a copy of the secret recipe from a notebook allegedly belonging to a friend of Coca-Cola’s creator. The secret ingredient, mysteriously named Merchandise 7x, is shown to be essential to the recipe.

    This American Life is used to seeing high traffic from hosting the popular podcast on the web, but their servers couldn’t take the rapid increase of visitors since the Coke story broke. Various news outlets have picked up the story, including Al Jazeera.

    A lot of changes have been made since the drink was invented in 1886: the roughly 8 milligram dose of cocaine has been removed, the amount of caffeine has been reduced, and the types of sweeteners and acids used have been replaced.

    Reports say that if the recipe is authentic, it’s possible that the creator was in the intermediate stages of perfecting the drink and that the final recipe is still safely hidden.

At its GreenHealth+ Campaign launch held today at the EDSA Shanri-La, LG unveiled new appliances that offers new and outstanding core technologies that promise to lower power consumption and improve your overall health. According to Raymond Hernandez, corporate marketing head of LG Electronics Philippines “LG has long been comitted to elevating home appliances above the realm of the functional to add something better to consumer’s lives.” LG’s newest core technologies, like its High Efficiency Inverter, Inverter Direct Drive and Linear Compressor Technologies are all aimed at delivering better energy efficiency and better overall health.

    These new technologies are present in the LG Inverter V split type air conditioner. Boasting the highest Efficiency Ratio (EER) at 15.30 in the Philippines, it’s one of the most power efficient air conditioner that you can buy. It’s also one of the quietest, and only emits a mere 19dB of noise. It also offers a range of healthcare features designed to protect users from allergens and viruses.

    Traditionally one of the biggest hogs in a home, the new refrigerators with LG’s Linear Inverter tech are 41% more efficient than A rated ones.     After five years and initial skepticism, ridicule, and outright aversion, Twitter has become one of the fastest tools to share and receive information and simply, to speak your mind.

    “What sets Twitter apart from social networking services such as Facebook is the absence of any expectation of reciprocity. If you decide to “follow” my twitterstream, then I’m under no obligation to follow yours. Unlike email, a tweet carries no expectation of a reply, and so there’s no heavy burden of obligation. The result is what one might call, pace Milan Kundera, the bearable lightness of tweeting,” John Naughton of The Observer writes.

    Cheaper, smaller phones by Apple?

    Recent reports have surfaced on the web that Apple Inc. is developing new versions of the iPhone that should stop Google’s Android units from taking their market share. How?

    They’re cheaper and smaller. They’re also said to allow usage on multiple wireless networks.

    What does this mean? Well it could get back some of the ground that Apple lost to Google because Android is available on more devices and with varying prices. This is of course under the watchful eye of CEO Steve Jobs, who despite being gone indefinitely on medical leave, still has a big say on what gets worked on in Apple R&D.

    The prototype is said to be one-third smaller than the iPhone 4 and lacking a “Home” button, according to an unnamed witness.

    Apple can afford to sell it at a low price because it will employ the same processor, display and other components similar to the ones in the current model, taking advantage of component price drops.

    Lots of big things to look out for in tech this year, and a lot of uncertainty in the minds of people eagerly awaiting the next shocking news. Will Google suffer at the hands of a cheap iPhone? Will Apple’s attempt at a smaller iPhone be successful? More importantly, which will consumers choose?

    Why Nokia rejected Android for Windows 7

    If Android had a TV show it would be Everybody Loves Android…except Apple and Microsoft. Oh and Nokia too. Last week Nokia shattered tech minds everywhere when they announced that they would be partnering up with Microsoft and by implication, placing Windows Phone 7 in their units.

    But why go Microsoft, when Android is clearly the dominating player in the mobile industry these days?

    Nokia CEO Stephon Elop sheds some light on the situation on the eve of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. He says that Nokia was approached by both Google and Microsoft before they made the decision to go with Windows Phone 7.

    “We’re assessing three different paths for the company. There was the largely internal option—taking advantage of MeeGo and Symbian, and the need to build a third ecosystem somewhat on our own but with the help of others. [But] there are some issues in that area that causes us to look at our second and third option. The second option…was to make a decision to pursue Android and to place a significant bet on the Android ecosystem. The third choice…was to enter into a partnership with Microsoft to build jointly an ecosystem around Windows Phone,” he says.

    Throughout those three choices, he says, Nokia weighed the effects of the move to possibly go with Android, which would be “some kind of duopoly. Apple and Android and some smaller players with Nokia contributing substantially to the Android ecosystem.”

    “To Google, that has value…and delivering some market share to Android would have tilted the mobile ecosystem in [their] direction. A decision to go Windows Phone creates a very different dynamic. By moving in the direction of Windows Phone and partnering with Microsoft, we create an environment where Windows Phone is a challenger, where we have created, a “three-horse race.”

    The question remains. Will a Nokia and Microsoft partnership be enough to chip off the market share of Android and iOS? Only time will tell.

    Sony Ericsson unveils 3 new Xperia Smartphones

    Sony Ericsson has today unveiled three new Android smartphones, introducing the new Xperia Neo, the Xperia Pro and the Xperia Play.

    Xperia Play

    The Xperia Play, dubbed as the PlayStation Phone, will launch in March. It has a 4-inch FWVGA display with a 480 x 854 resolution, 5.1 megapixel camera, 8GB microSD memory card, with 400MB of internal memory and a 1 GHz Scorpion ARMv7 processor on the inside. It comes in either black on white, both weighing 175 grams.

    Twenty game publishers including big names such as Gameloft, Electronic Arts and Blue Mobile, have partnered with Sony Ericsson to launch games specifically for the Xperia Play.

    Xperia Pro

    The Xperia Pro, will combine a touch screen experience with a slide-out keyboard. It is powered by a 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon™ MSM8255 processor and will have a 3.7 inch display with a 854  x 480 resolution. The device features 320MB internal memory, with an 8GB microSD card, expandable to up to 32GB. Three colors will be available for the Pro: Black, Silver and Red.

    Xperia Neo

    The Xperia Neo is the smaller, touchscreen-only equivalent of the Xperia Pro. It is powered by a 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon™ MSM8255 processor and will have a 3.7 inch display with a 854  x 480 resolution. It comes with 320MB internal memory and an 8GB microSD card, also expandable to up to 32GB. Three color-ways will also be available: Blue Gradient, Red and Silver.

    All three devices will be running on Android’s latest OS for smartphones: 2.4 Gingerbread. No pricing has been announced so far.
