HTC to invest in OnLive with plans to tap into mobile gaming

HTC, which recently acquired London-based mobile platform firm Saffron Digital, is now planning to invest a stake in the U.S.-based gaming company Onlive Inc. This is the Taiwanese company’s latest push to expand through acquisitions and gain a better position in the ever-competitive smartphone market.

HTC has seen tremendous success with its early adoption of the Android operating system in its mobile phones. It is now aiming to ramp up its investments in mobile technology to bring exclusive content and applications, in a bid to keep up with rival Apple, Inc. This new ecosystem of content, combined with powerful hardware and the unrelenting Android OS might just make HTC a worthy contender.

The company’s $40 million stake investment in OnLive will strengthen its gaming capabilities and help HTC tap into increasing demand for games on smartphones, according to HTC spokesperson Maggie Cheng. The company also bought Saffron Digital for $48 million with hopes of delivering a compelling multimedia video experience on its devices, said Shashi Fernando, Saffron’s chief executive.

HTC has been making remarkable smartphones with a unique user interface but it still lags behind Apple in terms of apps and content. These acquisitions by HTC will allow it to bring complex, localized content optimized for its devices to even up the ground against its rival. With such aggressive efforts, the Taiwanese company may be on its way to becoming one of the top-tier phone manufacturers in the world.

XIM3 gives XBOX 360 players keyboard and mouse support; almost like cheating

One of the main problems most PC to console converts have is the awkwardness of controllers in FPS games. No matter what other people say, the mouse and keyboard deliver an unparalleled degree of control in FPS games, something not lost with the creators of XIM3. Essentially, XIM3 allows users to use a keyboard and mouse with their favorite FPS game, and the result is more precise control and utter dominance of your enemies. Want to get in on the action? You can order your very own XIM3 over here at their store. Alas, they are currently out of stock as everyone wants in on the action. We’ve embedded a few videos shot with the XIM3 in action so you can see for yourself how well you could be playing COD Black Ops on your XBOX 360.

A cross between an iPad and a clipboard—the NoteSlate.

Before the iPad was the clipboard, an unassuming, flat piece of cork or plastic that you attached papers to so you could have something to write on while standing up. Now we’ve got the iPad, a powerful machine whose 9.7-inch high-res screen lets you play music, watch videos and run a myriad other functions. Somewhere in the middle of those two is the NoteSlate, a monochrome tablet for people who like technology but are wary of the many capabilities of computers. If you’re asking, “what ever happened to paper?” but are eco-conscious, the NoteSlate is for you.

The NoteSlate is a tablet device with true one color display and has a “real-paper look” design. You can basically lug it around for notes and sketches. Notes that are written can be saved or deleted. But alas, unlike the iPad, it cannot go online. The upside is, it’s so simple that it won’t overwhelm the user. And it’s only $99 (about Php 4,400). It measures at about 210x310x6mm and has a 13-inch matte monochrome eInk display. The actual screen is 190x270mm active display with 750×1080 pixels.

Because it doesn’t have a lot under the hood, it can afford to have 180 hours of battery life, and since you’ll be carrying it around a lot, the 280g shouldn’t hurt. It comes with a 3.5mm jack, a pen with an eraser and an AC/DC 12 V plug. It’s expandable up to 32GB through SD card and get this, it’s got a mini-USB port.

Kind of beats the iPad there, if you ask me.

Fashion brands make new home on Tumblr

In the past, fashion was accessible to the style-hungry primarily through magazines and runway shows. Now it branches out further into cyberspace with its latest move to blogging website Tumblr. Created by 26 year-old software consultant David Karp in 2007, Tumblr has been making waves as the “it” place for blogging with the many categories of posts it employs: texts, photos, quotes, links, chat, audio and video.

Brands like Kate Spade are making a name for themselves in cyberspace as they recognize that the usual channels for style information could soon be, if not already, out-dated.

Tumblr provides more opportunities for a fashion house to “spread the word” so to speak. With their “reblog” feature, Tumblr allows the user to share information by reposting it on his/her own blog. This in turn provides feedback to the original source. While Kate Spade uses Tumblr to interact with fans and mostly as a marketing tool, other fashion brands like Oscar de la Renta’s Tumblr account displays more of a behind-the-scenes look at the designer and his creations both past and present. The account was set-up to distribute brand content for recall by relying heavily on visual content, as opposed to marketing merchandise.

Best Buy Ad for Motorola Xoom leaked, WiFi crippled intentionally without data plan

Google’s plans for dominating the tablet scene might hit a pretty big hurdle – the Motorola Xoom, one of the first tablets to actually carry Honeycomb might be intentionally crippled of its WiFi if users don’t get a data plan. The information comes the way of a leaked Besy Buy ad. If so, then the Xoom might just be to pricey for consumers to start buying en masse, as the unit itself is already pegged at a pricey $799.99(about Php 35,000) without a data plan. This is the last thing that Honeycomb needs, as it’s already facing an uphill battle with Apple’s deeply entrenched iPad, and high unit prices for its Tablet OS isn’t going to help at all. Hopefully if the Xoom does shop up here, it’ll be fully functional without that silly plan and sensibly priced.

Rasmus details the build with exquisite detail that it’s possible to replicate what he’s done provided you have enough skill with Acrylic, tools and don’t mind sacrificing a netbook. If you’re not skilled enough to build it from scratch, he’ll be producing the kits shortly with the projected SRP being around $300 (hopefully).  More pictures of the finished product are in the gallery below.
