How tech stock is doing so far

So you want to put some of your hard-earned money in technology. Well, here’s how the big industry players have done so far.

Google trades in Nasdaq, it closed at US$608.83, down $3.17 from its previous close at USD$612. Analyst consensus is to buy Google stock, because despite earnings falling short of estimates in the first and second quarter of the past year, earnings soared beyond estimates in Q3 and Q4. Its lowest in 52-weeks was US$433.63. Recent activities among the portfolios that hold Google (GOOG.O) show that there have been 80 buys and 7 sells.

Apple (AAPL.O) also trades in Nasdaq, currently valued at US$342.97 per share, it went down $1.35 from its previous close at US$344.32. Analyst consensus is to buy Apple stock, and according to the last five quarter estimates, its earnings have always exceeded its estimates. Recent activity includes 131 buys and 18 sells with its market cap at US$316,781.41 million.

Although being a Canadian brand, Research in Motion is on Nasdaq and it closed at US$62.22, up $1.11 from previous US$61.11. Analyst consensus is to hold off buying or selling at the moment. RIM has a market cap of US$32,406.39 million and earnings have barely outperformed estimates in the last five estimates. Recent activity show that there have been 8 buys and 4 sells.

The above data is available at www.reuters.com/finance/stocks, and may have been updated by the time this post is published. This is just to give technology lovers an idea of what companies are performing in the market today. Recent activity is based on a varying number of stock portfolios. Of course a lot of factors affect market performance. One of which is internal organizational activity, especially when the company relies heavily on one person, such as Steve Jobs. When he announced that he would be taking a hiatus from running the company, Apple stock dropped 3-5% the next day which is why the SEC is pushing that he make his condition known so that investors can decide whether or not putting their money in Apple is a risk they’ll have to take without the visionary behind it.

The best people to consult are the analysts themselves. Back in 2007, Google stock soared to about US$700 and analysts predicted it to reach US$900 in two years. However, no one saw the market crash of 2008 coming and now, Google is priced at around US$600+ per share. Before buying stock, do your research and consult a lot of analysts then decide if you still want to risk it.

    Happy tech investing!

Social media and unrest in #egypt [Infographic]

If you’ve been active in social networks or have been following the news, you must have an idea about the crisis in Egypt. HootSuite, a popular Twitter client shared some stats on their blog about the social network activities during this time of arrest via an infographic:

Interestingly, I wonder how the Philippine stats would have been like if people had access to social networks such as Twitter during the first EDSA Revolution.

The Daily for iPad out now. Here’s how to download it from the Philippines.

Rupert Murdoch’s long-awaited, subscription-based, iPad-only magazine, The Daily has officially arrived in the US App Store. The app will feature news articles, interactive graphics, videos and photos designed to work with the iPad’s touchscreen. It is currently available on free trial for 2 weeks but regular pricing will cost a mere 14 cents per day, 99 cents a week, $40 per year and will be sold exclusively via Apple’s iTunes store.

Sounds exciting, right? But what about us from the Philippines who don’t have access to the app in our local app store? The Next Web shared a solution that will allow you to download The Daily, and read it while it’s free, wherever you are.

It’s all a matter of having a US iTunes account which we can’t apply for using our local credit cards. Once you have the account, you will have the full content privileges of someone who lives in the US, which includes downloading The Daily app. Now if you have an iTunes prepaid card, you can just create a US account right away. However, for those who doesn’t, you can follow these steps:

    1. Open iTunes and log out of your current account.

    2. Open up the iTunes store, and scroll all the way to the bottom. Click on the little round Philippine flag symbol at the bottom and change it to US.

    3. Browse the app store and try to download any free app.

    4. When prompted to log in or make an account, click to open a new account.

    5. While filling out your application, on the payment screen select ‘none,’

    6. Complete the application.

This method will not only let you download The Daily but other apps that are only available in the US as well. Fair warning though: once The Daily starts charging for subscriptions, you must either top up your US account using an iTunes gift card or borrow a US credit card from your friends or relatives abroad.

Google unveils new web store; better payment schemes in place

While we have nothing but love for Android, it does have some issues especially when it came to its Android Market. Or had. Google’s just launched the new and improved Android Market Web Store, a one stop shop where you can grab all of your apps easily without having to go through the Android market on your Android device. iTunes has had a similar system in place where you can browse for apps you wanted on your computer and just link your device later on for you to push your app of choice. The Android Market web store on the other hand, allows you to acquire and buy apps directly from your web browser, and the app will push automatically to your device via WiFi or 3G. It also simplifies payment of apps, a big concern for developers moving forward. Pretty nifty if you ask us. Hit the link below to visit the site.

Technology propels WikiLeaks to get Nobel Peace Prize nom

    0

Controversial website WikiLeaks has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. Now unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few months, WikiLeaks has been behind some of the biggest—both in content and volume—exposés of the decade ranging from the release of secret documents from the Church of Scientology to U.S. embassy cables and more recently, the role of the Philippines in the smuggling of uranium. According to Reuters, the Norwegian parliamentarian who nominated WikiLeaks sees it as “one of the most important contributors to freedom of speech and transparency.”

However, this exercise of freedom of speech that WikiLeaks so vehemently champions would’ve never been possible without the medium that it employed—the world wide web. First role of technology: MEDIUM through which the information was distributed. How long do you think it would take for 250,000 U.S. diplomatic cables to be released through newspapers and television? More importantly, how long would founder Julian Assange have to wait for his sources to send the information to him? When you really think about it, technology plays a very big role.

A role that Assange continues to use to his advantage. In an interview with “60 Minutes,” Assange talks of how he set up WikiLeaks so that if he or his staff were unable to go on with releasing the documents, someone would still be able to continue the work for them. He says that “encrypted backups of information are distributed into servers all over the world,” and “all we need to do is give them an encrypted key.” Second role of technology: FAIL-SAFE.

Some of the classified documents were allegedly given by Bradley Manning, an intelligence analyst in Iraq currently accused of copying them from a classified government network. Third role of technology: SOURCE. Private First Class Manning clearly didn’t get hardcopies of the documents out of a file cabinet then FedEx-ed it to Assange. The source and format of the information is important, because it sets the conditions of what conduit to use. While Assange maintains that they “do not go after” specific countries or people but rather give the public all the information there is so they may make sound, informed decisions to give or withdraw support to a particular cause, the jury is out on the effects of WikiLeaks actions—so far, it hasn’t brought peace.

Assange knows this, as he often changes cellphones and appearance to elude being kidnapped or arrested. For an organization that is shaking up the world in a huge way, WikiLeaks has no permanent office. Fourth role of technology: MOBILITY. The company is headquartered wherever Assange is and is made-up of anonymous employees and worldwide volunteers. Fifth role of technology: ANONYMITY.

Although staying anonymous in a world that’s constantly getting smaller is unlikely, by now we know that technology creates unbelievable miracles everyday and while we haven’t seen it yet, it’s not impossible that WikiLeaks will be given the Nobel Peace Prize and hopefully, be a step for technology to have a role in finally creating PEACE.

Unleash the power of your Mac dock with HyperDock

    0

The OSX dock is probably one of the most remarkable features of Macs and HyperDock makes it even sexier. It’s a simple, no nonsense, lightweight app that make navigating through your active apps easier.

One of the main features of HyperDock is the Window Previews. What it does is that whenever you scroll over an icon on your dock, it shows all the open windows of that app. From there, you can minimize, rearrange, hide, or switch to different windows, which is very convenient  for de-cluttering your workspace if you have a lot of windows open. One major bugger is that viewing by tabs is only available for Safari, but not on every other browser.

HyperDock also works natively with a few (er.. too few) OS X apps to add features other than simply a preview of the window. For iCal, it shows upcoming events, for iTunes, it shows a pane where you can control or rate the song that’s currently playing. It would’ve been awesome if there was support for more apps like Mail, Twitter, or the iLife apps perhaps. For everything else, it pretty much just shows windows previews.

Lastly, HyperDock also allows you to assign key and mouse shortcuts to your dock items to hide or quit apps, start Expose, open Safari tabs, Finder Windows and much more. All of these and a lot of other customizations could be accessed under System Preferences.

Due to Apple restrictions, this app is not available in the Mac App Store. You can download it directly from their website for a 15 day trial. If you like it, you can buy a license for $9.95.

Being an app just out of beta, HyperDock has a lot of potential. I would surely like to see more creative ways of integrating its features to other popular Mac apps. The concept is great, and it works well.  Give it a try and tell us what you think.

Google: Please stop copying our search results

Seems like something’s amiss in the internet. Danny Sullivan, Editor-in-Chief for searchengineland.com ran a story about Bing allegedly copying Google’s search results. He has a whole wall of text explaining how Bing does it but it seems that users who run Google searches on IE send (unwittingly) information to Bing, and Bing in essence copies those results. The whole shebang is explained in Danny’s story, and Google’s official explanation on the links below.

Honda Native Concept Car Changes Color Like A Mood Ring

Honda believes in “The Power of Dreams,” but who would’ve dreamed up a car like this?

Italian transportation designer Liviu Tudoran did. Drawn sometime in 2009, reports are surfacing of new details of the car, named the Honda Native. The car changes color through photo-cosmic technology—something no one seems to know about yet. But etymologically speaking, it would probably have something to do with the manipulation of white light and its component colors.

Apparently, Tudoran’s also a champion of the environment as he conceptualized the Honda Native being powered by an electric engine that harnesses energy from high-voltage, lithium-ion batteries. The interiors of the car do not play second-fiddle, as it is made of light aluminum while the speedometer display  and touchscreen controls employ new OLED technology.

While waiting for confirmation that the Honda Native will be produced, we’ll have to settle for some of the other futuristic designs Tudoran has on his site.

And here I was waiting for a flying Delorean.

    UPDATE (February 4, 2011, 11:00PM):

Tudoran has responded to our inquiries with this clarification: that photochromic (not photo-cosmic) material is something that changes reversibly color with changes in light intensity. These materials are said to be colorless in the dark, but when sunlight or UV radiation is applied (hence, heat) the molecular structure of the material changes and it exhibits color. When the light source is removed, the color then disappears. Changes from one color to another will be made possible by the combining of photochromic colors with base colors.

“The photochromic material…is applied on the exterior of the car and covered properly with a polycarbonate material”, he says.

AMD Radeon 6990 spotted in the wild, might be overcompensating

We’ve seen our fair share of massive video cards, but the AMD 6990 might just take the crown of the biggest of them all. Unveiled during the recently concluded Asian Pacific Fusion Tech Day held at the lion city Singapore, the absolutely gigantic 6990 is rumored to sport not one, but two GPUs inside. Cost, performance and power requirements are all still up in the air, but if it follows the norm for  high end video cards, you can expect the answers to be “expensive, fast and might require its own generator”.  You can catch a glimpse of more pictures of the monstrosity from the Japanese site 4gamer linked below.

Samsung teases with concept Real Translator device

[This entry is cross posted to The Next Web]

Travelling to other countries could be a big headache because of the language barrier. Wouldn’t it be awesome if there was a device to solve this? Samsung may be up to the challenge with its concept device: the Real Translator.

It supposedly works by holding up the device equipped with a transparent AMOLED while facing the person you are talking to. The device will then interpret whatever is spoken in real time and give a rough translation on the spot.

It actually sounds so surreal to the point that it has raised a lot of questions in our heads: How accurate would it be? How do I speak back? What about surrounding noise, different tones and accents? A lot of things are yet to be revealed but Ubergizmo said that “Samsung Mobile Display is claiming that this product can be mass produced in due time.”

But really, for the time being, it would be surely nice if there could be a simple app that does the same on my iPhone/Android.
