Urban mobility: Changing the way we move

Urban mobility is changing around the world. Countries have started electrifying their public transport systems, and powering them with sustainable energy. Many European nations are shifting their definition of city roads, now focusing more on people instead of cars.

Here is how urban mobility is changing the way we move:

    Electrification and mini-mobility

Last year, we talked about EVs and how they are a more sustainable mobility solution. Beyond sustainability, EVs can also be a good personal mobility solution for highly urbanized areas, such the cute Mini EVs that have started entering the Philippine market.

Mini EVs like the Jetour Ice Cream (Chery Ice in other markets) and Wuling Hongguang Mini EVs have taken over the Chinese motoring industry. These cars, fashioned after the Japanese Kei-cars, serve as a personal transport solution in Chinese cities. They’re highly sought after because of their cheap price (around USD5,000 or roughly around PHP300,000), their small and nimble frame, and finally their cheap operational cost as an EV.

The sole purpose of these Mini-EVs, and even the Kei cars that preceded them, is to transport a person from point A to point B within the city. They were created with a limited range (for EVs) and speed. They’re economical not just because they are electric-powered but also because of they consume little energy due to their compact size.

Adopting Mini-EVs will not change the primary problem within our transport system, the deadly traffic. They are, after all, still cars; but they offer a more economical way of traveling and consume less road space – now a luxury in rush hour Manila.

Beyond the current Mini-EVs in the market, other mini-mobility solutions are being considered. There are smaller EVs that can carry one or, at most, two persons — similar to a motorcycle but with four wheels and enclosed. They’re made for people who are afraid of riding e-bikes or electric scooters.

These small EVs are the perfect solution for metro traffic because they’re smaller, therefore consuming a lot less space; they’re safer than a motorcycle; and they offer a more sustainable mode of transportation.

    The challenges in electrification

The electrification of mobility also comes with am infrastructure challenge. Many people are skeptical about EVs mainly because of range anxiety from the lack of publicly available charging spots. Sure, home charging is a solution, but for those living in a condominium or apartment, home charging may not be a feasible.

So what’s the deal with the lack of EV infrastructure? For me, it’s an economic dilemma arising from lack of demand. Currently, the number of EVs in the market is still relatively low (compared to other nations). There is also a higher initial cost for EVs compared to conventional internal combustion engines. But with the new government measures promoting EVs like the EVIDA law and the president’s February Executive Order removing tariffs on EVs, we can expect more and more EVs to enter the market.

How other countries made the shift to EVs

If there is a model country for the uptake of EVs, it’s Norway. The Scandinavian country has trumped the rest of the world when it comes to EV adoption — 80% of total car sales in 2022 were EVs. It managed to do this by making EVs a better option than regular ICEs.

Norway offered massive tax breaks on EVs. Additionally, it offered massive perks from the years 2000 – 2017. EVs were exempted from paying tolls, ferries, and even parking. Additionally, the country invested heavily in charging infrastructure, going as far as requiring apartments and other multi-story housing to have their electric wiring ready in case a tenant wants to install an EV wall charger.

In Asia, China remains the largest EV adapter with 22% of its total car sales in 2022 being EVs. While that may look like a small percentage, you have to remember that China is the world’s largest auto market with 26.86 million vehicles sold in the country just in 2022. The EV sales number is expected to grow even larger this year with more car manufacturers offering higher value cars, investing more in EV infrastructure, all supported by a massive government subsidy for both car manufacturers and buyers.

In Southeast Asia, Thailand is becoming the leader in EV adoption. While it recorded just 1% of total car registrations as EVs, that number grew to 6% in just January – April of this year. Leading the charge in EV sales in Thailand are Chinese EV giants BYD, SAIC Motors (MG), and Great Wall Motor. The country is also offering its existing car manufacturing expertise to these car makers, hoping to become Southeast Asia’s EV manufacturing hub.

How the Philippines can shift to EVs

In Deloitte survey on preference of EVs in Southeast Asia, it was found that Thailand ranked the first in wanting their next car to be an EV. The Philippines had the lowest take up with 72% of Filipinos still wanting an ICE in their next vehicle. The preference is due to the lack of EV infrastructure in the country.

The 72% may look high, but that is 10% lower than the previous year. The study found that 55% of respondents were mainly concerned about the lack of EV infrastructure. Other apprehensions were the time it takes to charge (51%), and safety concerns about battery technology (45%). Other concerns were driving range, and lack of alternative power sources at home (43%).

The results of the survey are very clear, Filipinos want the EV infrastructure to be ready before gaining confidence to shift to EVs. As more EVs enter our market, we can hope that the infrastructure can keep up — so we can change the way we move.

How embedded banking drove CIMB Bank PH to the top

In a country with over 500 banks to choose from, standing out can be a real challenge, especially for newer players like CIMB Bank Philippines. The digital-only commercial bank took on the challenge of paving its own road to success through a keen understanding of what consumers truly want alongside the use of newer banking concepts, such as embedded banking. This is how, within four years, CIMB Bank PH has become the country’s best bank, according to Forbes’ 2023 World’s Best Bank ranking, even surpassing longtime industry players.

    Exploring new ways to bank

Filipinos have banked the same way for the longest time, as this was the only way they know how. With no alternatives in sight, they made do with how banking was done regardless of how inefficient or tedious it can get. Through pioneering embedded banking in the Philippines, CIMB Bank PH was able to offer a more convenient yet secure alternative for Filipinos to carry out their financial transactions. This gave customers access to banking services directly through non-banking platforms, giving them unparalleled convenience when paying for products and services online.

With embedded banking, financial services are integrated within the digital platforms and super apps of non-financial companies, which means customers do not need to switch between multiple applications or interfaces anymore. Since the financial services are already embedded into these platforms, customers can conveniently access and enjoy these services.

With its growing number of embedded banking partners, CIMB Bank PH helps non-banking entities and retailers to easily offer payment solutions, savings accounts, and lending services to their existing customer bases. Some of CIMB’s key partnerships are with GCash for their GCredit product, as well as for SPayLater on the Shopee e-commerce platform, with more coming soon.

Leveraging the benefits of embedded banking

“Our approach to embedded banking has always been customer centric. We strive to make the lives of our customers simpler through our innovative partnerships. By collaborating with select partners, we create new solutions that help solve customers’ pain points while also supporting our partners’ business needs,” shared Suraj Ramchandani, Chief Growth Officer of CIMB Bank PH. “We work on enhancing customer experiences on our partners’ platforms, examples of which would be the savings account on GCash through GSave, the revolving credit line on GCash through GCredit, the Buy Now, Pay Later loan channeling product in Shopee, as well as new strategic collaborations to be announced soon.”

CIMB Bank PH’s focus on embedded banking is one of the key drivers of its success in the Philippines. Its more than 7 million customers across the country enjoy the unparalleled convenience, ease of use, and security of embedded banking, which is not often offered by other banks. This also helped make financial services more accessible, especially for Filipinos with limited access to banking services through traditional banks.

By integrating CIMB’s banking services into everyday platforms, customers can seamlessly perform their day-to-day financial transactions with ease, empowering them through personalized, convenient, and inclusive financial services.

On the future of embedded banking for CIMB, Ramchandani shared that the digital-only commercial bank will continue working with carefully chosen partners to offer a differentiated offer for each, depending on their specific business and customer needs. Other things to look out for in the near future are the opportunities to disrupt underserved segments such as small and medium enterprises and the overseas Filipino market.

Aside from working with partners, the recent launch of the CIMB Virtual Debit Card also further fueled the bank’s embedded banking business, as it provided a safe and secure online transaction method for Fast Plus, GSave, and UpSave account holders. To date, CIMB Bank PH has close to 500,000 virtual and physical card customers.

CIMB Bank PH continues its drive to support the further digitalization of the Philippines in line with the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’s Digital Payments Transformation Roadmap and will soon unveil more embedded banking partners that can enable even more Filipinos to live their purpose.

ASUS solidifies commitment to sustainable future, collects over one ton of trash with CORA

    0

ASUS solidifies its commitment toward an incredible, sustainable future and its thrust toward a circular economy and collected a landmark 1.67 tons of plastic and other recyclable wastes through a series of activations in partnership with nonprofit organization Communities Organized for Resource Allocation (CORA). The ASUS x CORA sustainability campaign spanned three phases, each focusing on and involving various stakeholders for a holistic approach toward promoting eco-friendly products, reducing waste, intensifying awareness about circular economy and climate action, and educating people on how to lead an eco-conscious lifestyle.

“At ASUS, we believe that innovation and sustainability go hand in hand. As we continue innovating our products, we strive to be more sustainable. We are immensely thankful for everyone, including our partner CORA, the ASUS Philippines employees, our partners, dealers, and all the Filipinos who helped us in this meaningful mission to protect and save our environment through recycling plastic and other everyday waste, giving them a second life, and promoting a sustainable and incredible future for the people and the planet,” ASUS Philippines country manager George Su said.

In 2007, ASUS launched its first sustainable notebook, the ASUS Bamboo Series. It received numerous environmental certifications and accolades for its revolutionary engineering and design. Early this year, ASUS launched the most sustainable Zenbook ever, the Zenbook S 13 OLED (UX5304), underscoring the company’s 2025 Sustainability Goals and its commitment to environmental stewardship. Taking a significant step toward circular product design, the Zenbook S 13 OLED is an EPEAT Gold registered product with a positive environmental impact across the entire product lifecycle, from material use and manufacturing to assembly, use, and end-of-life.

    Circular economy starts with us

ASUS held a knowledge-sharing activity with its employees dubbed ASUStainable Solution: Circular Economy Starts with Us. CORA and its Circular Center Women Champions (CCWC) presented the country’s current plastic situation. They educated ASUS employees on how they can contribute to a circular economy by recycling typical household wastes, such as plastic bottles. Aside from instilling personal change, the workshop encouraged employees to disseminate what they learned to their family and friends. After the seminar, a two-month recycling activity among ASUS employees was held, where they collected plastic bottles, soft plastics, sibak, colored paper, and cartons. These office and home wastes were collected through CORA’s Eco-Ikot Center pop-up, where dedicated trash bins were set up in the ASUS office. ASUS employees generated 840.6 kg. total waste. The waste collected was then brought to CORA’s partner Sentinel Upcycling Technologies to transform them into high-quality products such as benches, school chairs, and mobile trash bins.

Under the innovation and value creation pillar of the ASUS 2025 Sustainability Goals, ASUS also donated two ASUS Zenbook laptops to CORA to aid them in their administrative tasks. This includes recording data from their Eco-Ikot Center in Parañaque City and managing other programs and campaigns with public and private organizations.

The CORA Eco-Ikot Center is an inclusive and holistic recycling system that allows communities to exchange recyclables for points, which can be redeemed for various incentives. The first of its kind in the Philippines and the world, CORA’s Eco-Ikot Center provides a sustainable solution to the plastic pollution crisis.

    ASUS x CORA Mall Caravan

For the second phase, ASUS installed CORA Eco-Ikot Center pop-ups in three ASUS Exclusive Stores, making it accessible for Filipinos to recycle and reduce plastic waste. Filipinos got to take home ASUS and CORA merchandise in exchange for clean and dry plastic bottles. The CCWCs educated them and other mallgoers what is circular economy and the benefits of recycling common plastic waste.

Mallgoers were also able to experience the Zenbook S 13 OLED and learned the importance of supporting and using eco-friendly products, further cementing ASUS’ sustainability thrust.

The ASUS x CORA Mall Caravan collected over 1,100 plastic bottles, equivalent to 28.5 kg. It was held at SM Cyberzone in Megamall, North EDSA, and Mall of Asia.

    Celebrating International Coastal Cleanup Day

For the final leg, ASUS celebrated 2023 International Coastal Cleanup Day by combing the shore of Las Piñas-Parañaque Wetland Park (LPPWP) of trash and debris led by Zenbook S 13 OLED Ambassador and CORA Founder Antoinette Taus, together with volunteers from ASUS employees, media, influencers, partners, and dealers. This joint effort of 75 volunteers collected 646.2 kg. of plastic waste, Styrofoam, rubber materials, and stuffed toys. The trash accumulated was segregated to send the recyclable materials to CORA’s recycling partner.

The data collected during the event will help CORA and government agencies address the dire waste problem in Manila Bay. The LPPWP is part of the Manila Bay coast and was reported to carry an estimated 9.46 billion pieces of plastic waste.

United Nations Goodwill Ambassador and CORA Founder Antoinette Taus also shared, “We need to reduce our waste overall and make sure that the waste we do produce ends up in the right places, to the circular economy.”

The collective efforts of ASUS Global and its local markets contributed to the significant strides in sustainability focus areas. In the recently announced ASUS 2022 Sustainability Report, the global technology leader detailed that it exceeded ENERGY STAR standards by 34%. Its eco-friendly products also accounted for 87% of total product revenue. These and more led ASUS to bag multiple 2023 Asia Sustainability Reporting Awards and receive international recognition. ASUS will continue to create local and global initiatives toward being a net-zero enterprise in 2050.

Filipino travelers value flexibility and accommodation choices—Visa Global Travel study

As post-pandemic travel resumes, research shows that flexibility, convenience, and safety continue to be sought after by travelers around the globe. The latest Visa Global Travel Intentions Study (GTI) 2023 shows the evolving travel habits of travelers, presenting a roadmap for businesses to cater to their needs.

In the Philippines, some key findings of the GTI study revealed that Filipinos value flexibility and accommodation choices, where 75% of travelers prioritized cleanliness when choosing their accommodation for the trip as a possible effect of the pandemic, and 35% of travelers chose to travel independently instead of packaged tours.

Jeff Navarro, Visa’s country manager for the Philippines and Guam said, “We continue to see outbound travel bouncing back in the country to pre-pandemic levels, where Filipinos have taken on average two leisure trips in the last 12 months. We are optimistic that tourism will remain a vital backbone of the economy as we move toward the year-end holiday season, as Visa continues to facilitate safe and secure cross-border shopping activity, both for inbound tourists shopping at our many wonderful local landmarks, and for Filipinos traveling locally or abroad.”

The GTI Study revealed that the key motivations for Filipinos travelling locally and abroad are mostly for relaxation (69%), exploring something new (52%), and for adventure (48%).

The top three destinations abroad for 89% of Filipino travelers are to Asia Pacific countries such as Japan, Singapore, and Hong Kong, with travel peaking between December 2022 and March 2023.

“While we are also optimistic of the digitalization of travel that extends across buying airline tickets and tours, accommodation, travel insurance, and shopping, the study also showed 66% of Filipino travelers had payment concerns prior to leaving for their trip. This can be stressful for those who are not yet well-versed in digital payments, and who feel the need to carry cash and find money changers and ATMs. Contactless payments have emerged as the mode of choice in many places around the world, and we are supportive of all stakeholders in the ecosystem working together to enable cashless and contactless payments in the Philippines,” Jeff added.

The path to progress in tourism is a shared journey, and Visa will continue playing a role in shaping the industry’s future through widespread acceptance of digital payments for everyone, everywhere.

Grab PH champions continuous road safety learning for drivers

Grab Philippines is unwavering in its commitment to providing safe and convenient rides — not just for its passengers but also for its driver-partners. With safety being of paramount importance, Grab complements its comprehensive suite of safety features with continuous learning initiatives for its driver-partners, which are geared at reminding and updating them on road safety skills, know-how, and regulations.

Grab Philippines head of operations CJ Lacsican shares, “Road safety is more than just abiding by traffic regulations as it is a multi-dimensional commitment that requires a 360-degree approach. At Grab, we embrace a holistic safety ethos by introducing industry-first safety features within our app; and equipping our driver-partners with the skills needed to offer safe rides, which cover not only the technical aspects of driving but also the expected decorum when ferrying our passengers to their intended destination.”

Lacsican reiterated Grab’s commitment to offering reskilling and upskilling programs for its partner communities as they progress on the Grab platform.

Among the leading superapp’s key skills development initiatives on road safety is its webinar series with the theme “Drive Safe: Takbong Pogi, Safe Palagi”, where speakers from Grab and partner organizations refresh driver- and delivery-partners on road safety tips. The webinar, which happens quarterly, focuses on vehicle maintenance tips, road safety guidelines, and pointers on driver wellbeing.

Engr. Ron Escaler, Corporate Health and Safety manager at CEMEX Holdings Philippines

In these webinars, Grab also partners with other organizations that are experts in various road situations. In the first quarter of 2023, Grab partnered with global construction material company CEMEX for a cadence of knowledge-sharing sessions titled ‘Listo Tayo!’, which zeroed in on how to safely ply the roads with heavy- and light-duty trucks. To date, around 1,000 driver- and -delivery partners have participated in the series.

The “Drive Safe: Takbong Pogi, Safe Palagi” webinar series also comprehensively addresses passenger handling and provides essential customer service reminders and guidelines to Grab driver-partners. This initiative ensures that driver-partners foster a safe and worry-free environment for their passengers from the moment they board the vehicle to their drop-off. Key topics covered in this series encompass gender sensitivity, the use of proper language, and general code of conduct.

Furthering accessibility to learning opportunities is GrabAcademy — Grab’s very own in-app learning platform for its partner communities.  Driver-, delivery-, and merchant-partners have exclusive access to the platform’s diverse array of educational programs, covering subjects such as road safety, vehicle sanitation, and data protection; and refresher courses on service quality standards and platform guidelines. GrabAcademy also includes modules on entrepreneurship, computer basics, and digital content. Partners who complete the courses will receive a Certificate of Completion via their driver- or merchant- apps.

“As the famous adage goes, ‘life-long learning is the key to success’. We are committed to both providing a viable livelihood to our partners and ensuring that they have an optimum progression on the platform. It’s of high importance for us that they grow with us and that they are able to evolve their skillset as they pursue their professions within the Grab ecosystem or even other income-generating interests,” Lacsican adds.

FWD Life Insurance launches first insurance plan for gamers in PH

With the growing popularity of gaming, there is also an increase in health-related concerns. To address this challenge, FWD Philippines is offering an insurance plan for gamers.

The Philippines is one of the fastest-growing markets for gaming, with over 43 million gamers active online. According to a 2021 YCP Solidiance study, this number has grown steadily at 13% per year, making the country one of the most active markets in Southeast Asia.

The Filipino workforce dominates the Philippine esports community, with Gen Zs and millennials aged 25-34 making up the majority of gamers. There’s also a significant number of gamers aged 55 and above. Esports in the country has become so popular, with games like Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) leading the category with over 5.4 million daily users as of August 2023.

However, repetitive stress injuries, poor sleeping patterns, and even chronic mental problems are just some of the health issues that come with the gamer’s lifestyle.

Your Expert Wingman: FWD The One for gamers

Now in its 12th season, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Professional League – Philippines (MPL-PH) is one of the most prestigious and most anticipated gaming tournaments, where teams compete for a chance to go against international representatives in the MLBB Southeast Asia Cup (MSC) and M World Series.

As the official insurer of MPL-PH season 12, FWD Life Insurance (FWD Philippines) supports the passion of players to turn challenges into victories and offers a new and exclusive policy: The One for gamers.

Like how most gamers would avail items for their heroes as part of their strategy to win the game, FWD The One for gamers is a fully customizable insurance plan that can help customers tackle life’s challenges and turn them into victories. It is also exclusive for this season of MPL-PH.

“As the insurer of the next generation, we’re committed to supporting the passions of young Filipinos, including the esports and gaming community,” says Roche Vandenberghe, FWD Philippines chief marketing and digital business officer. “Gamers recognize the importance of having great support, and this is the role we’re taking in real life — we act as the expert wingman who has your back, enabling you to focus on transforming any challenge into a triumph.”

FWD The One for gamers offers flexible coverage for your life adventure for whatever stage you’re in. In just a matter of minutes, you can easily avail of the policy at the FWD Online Shop with no medical exams required. The policy also provides exclusive Mobile Legends: Bang Bang in-game rewards that help players get better gameplay, when received within 20 days after purchase of The One.

Starting at PHP330 for a year of coverage, gamers can build their plan by adding critical illness benefit, accidental death coverage, or even both. You can also enjoy the unique benefit of no premium increase after every five years if you continually renew your plan on time.

Celebrate your victories with The One for gamers, from FWD, your expert wingman! For more information about the policy and how to avail of it, please visit fwd.com.ph/life-protection/the-one-for-gamers/

DITO Home Unli 5G WIFI reviewed

The long pause that was the pandemic made it evident that access to the Internet is crucial for everyday living in the 2020s.

Fortunately, there are options. The newest player in the local telco scene, DITO Telecommunity, now offers 5G wireless access with their own HOME postpaid WIFI kit. We’ve had some time to try it, and here’s what we think.

    DITO Home

    Design: 4/5

Firstly, the box. Inside, you’ll find a combination of wireless router and 5G CPE preinstalled with a DITO 5G SIM, an ethernet cable, and the power brick. Our review device came with a simple printed manual, though the final retail version might include different documentation.

The device is small, at a scant 7x5x3 inches, and lighter than a paperback book of the same size.

The device is a ZTE MC888S in white and takes up a pleasantly small amount of space–it’s 7 x 5 x 3 inches or about the size of four video game disc cases placed side-by-side. It has four LAN ports on the back and just 3 LED status indicators in front for 5G signal, WiFi status, and power.

    Hardware: 4/5

The MC888S CPE is a combination WiFi router and modem, so there’s no need to connect a separate device to get wireless access. Additionally, it can broadcast 2.4GHz and 5GHz signals for broad device compatibility. It also supports WiFi 6 for scorchingly fast connectivity on devices that support the standard. The micro SIM card slot rests at the bottom of the unit and along the side you’ll find a micro USB port for firmware updates and a reset button. There’s also a WPS button on the top edge for easy WiFi setup.

    User Experience: 4/5

After everything was plugged in and waiting for the router to finish its initial connection to the network, I logged in to the surprisingly helpful admin page. Aside from the usual data monitor, SMS access, and WiFi security controls, there’s also a handy feature that tells you how good the reception is where you placed the unit, along with a visual guide as to where the best and worst places are to put the device in your home.

The DITO website has a constantly updated list of areas with 5G and 4G service, so check back frequently if your home isn’t already covered.

I queued up a few 4K videos on YouTube, all of which played smoothly with absolutely no issues. The same went for all the other streaming services. Netflix, in particular, went so well that I was sidetracked for longer than I care to admit watching a show on the TV, which I had previously connected to the DITO modem. This was still the case even with three devices streaming HD content at the same time.

Having more than proven itself in the entertainment front, I decided to use the connection for work. I had several meetings queued up for the day across Zoom, Google Meet, and Discord, and all my meetings concluded with no lag, stuttering, or drops! This is something I’d hadn’t been able to achieve while tethering from my phone, and it’s nice to know DITO can deliver a connection stable enough on which to have online meetings.

    DITO Home
I was successfully able to download the Cyberpunk 2.0 update, which took a few hours and ended up averaging about 20MBps.

While I’ve long put competitive gaming aside, I was able to play a few titles online with no problems. Fallout 76, Ready or Not, and Remnant 2 are admittedly not extremely sensitive to latency, but as far as I can tell, you should have a reasonably pain-free experience on everything but the twitchiest of titles, at which point, a wired connection would better serve you.

DITO has made the requirements for signing up for either plan extremely easy. They require nothing more than a single valid ID, and proof of billing, which can be anything from a utility bill to a certificate of residence from your barangay. There are a few more details on the DITO website, but their requirements are the easiest to accomplish among all the home postpaid offerings I’ve seen locally.

Once you have the documents together, you simply head over to DITO.ph, search for the DITO Home WiFi Postpaid tab, and click “Apply Now,” after which it’s a quick form, a few uploads, and you can just wait for your device and sim card to be delivered.

    Value: 5/5

5G connectivity is ready for everything but the fastest competitive games.

At the time of this writing, DITO offers two postpaid plans for their 5G service. The first is for unlimited 5G for PHP 1490, though they are currently offering an introductory price of PHP 745 a month for the first six months of your subscription. The other plan comes with a 200GB data cap monthly for PHP 990. Both plans give up to 500+ Mbps speed and rewards points every time you pay your bill. With either plan, you also get 30 days of Prime Video Subscription, which is a nice little bonus. Additionally, the data capped 200 GB plan has data rollover, so unused data gets carried over to the next month (though not past that).

Overall, I’m quite impressed with DITO’s 5G offering. The connection was stable throughout my testing period, and more than adequately fast for most users’ needs, all with a single wireless device. Because it relies on 5G connectivity, it would be best to check the DITO website to make sure your area has DITO 5G coverage before you make the jump. If your area is on the list, this is a solid option for convenient wireless internet connectivity.

So, is the DITO Home 5G WiFi ready for primetime? I think so, with a few caveats. The first, of course, is that your area needs 5G coverage. The list isn’t as long as other carriers at the moment, but they’re constantly rolling out 5G connectivity to more and more places. Secondly, since it’s a 5G connection, you’ll have to find a spot that has a strong signal. This might take some time doing, and there’s no way to find out how good the signal will be at a given spot in your home without trying. Once you’ve gotten that, though, the connection is strong, steady, and reliable.

For the price, speed, and reliability, DITO Home’s 5G Postpaid WiFi offering is one that I think you’d be more than happy with.

    Bottomline:

Need a fast internet connection without a long, painful application process or a tangle of wires? DITO has just the thing for you.

    Specifications:

    • Device: ZTE MC888S
    • Carriet network: 5G
    • WiFi network: 2.4GHz, 5GHz
    • WiFi standard: WiFi 6
    • Ethernet ports: 4
    • SIM: Micro
    • Power: 12V, 1.6A

    What’s Hot:

    • Versatile, wire-free connectivity
    • Actually comes with good hardware
    • Great value

    What’s Not:

    • Coverage is limited for the time being
    • You need a good spot at home to get the best signal

Shell Rimula’s Garahe ng Galing celebrates truck drivers and mechanics

To recognize the important roles of both truck drivers and mechanics, Shell Rimula kicked off the Luzon Leg of its Garahe ng Galing event on August 26, 2023, in Don Bosco Technical Institute of Makati, with most of the participants coming from Metro Manila, Bulacan, Rizal and Cavite.

In a fast-paced world, truck drivers do more than just deliveries, they transport goods all over the country to keep businesses running and people moving. Working alongside them are the ever-reliable mechanics, who play a crucial role in safety by maintaining and repairing trucks to keep them road worthy, to help prevent accidents and ensure the safety of drivers and other road users.

Participants learn about truck repair and maintenance in one of the challenge rooms at Shell Rimula’s Garahe ng Galing event.

The Garahe ng Galing served as a platform for mechanics and drivers to acquire new skills and improve their knowledge about actual challenging situations they might encounter on the road. They had the opportunity to apply their expertise by solving problems from the three focused topics: oil leak, engine problems, and tire wear. This ended with a brief explanation and a Q&A session with Don Bosco instructors.

After completing the three skills challenges, participants were directed to the NC-1 registration booth to apply for a free TESDA NC-1 (National Certification in Automotive Servicing) Certificate. They also had a chance to win freebies such as one gallon of Shell Rimula R4X, socket wrenches, or a gift certificate to a fast-food service chain.

Jackie Famorca, Vice President of Shell Lubricants in the Philippines, shared how the event gave their team insights into the challenges faced by truck drivers and mechanics and helped them identify ways to support them better.

Jackie Famorca, Vice President of Shell Lubricants Philippines, pays tribute to truck drivers and mechanics at the kick-off event of Shell Rimula’s Garahe ng Galing in Don Bosco Makati

(With every driving journey and use of repair tools, they pave the way for a safer, more vibrant, and more connected Philippines. Shell Lubricants is committed to supporting them so they can do their jobs safely and efficiently. It’s high time we see their value and appreciate them for everything they do to keep our country moving forward.)

She added that these unsung heroes work long hours and often face rough working conditions, such as harsh weather and challenging terrains, and may even be away from home for weeks to deliver essential goods and services wherever and whenever needed.

Johnnie Santos, Technical Director of Don Bosco TVET Department, shared the institute’s vision for automotive professionals like mechanics and truck drivers, and encouraged them to continue striving for excellence despite challenges.

Johnnie Santos, Technical Director of Don Bosco Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Department, said that the work of truck drivers and mechanics is no small feat. He also mentioned Don Bosco’s longstanding partnership with Shell and how they aim to empower more of these professionals to become more globally competitive and help elevate their lives.

(This program by Shell has been incredibly helpful especially for those of us with little to no time to attend new trainings and apply for certifications because of work. That’s why we can really make use of the NC I, especially in seeking better job opportunities.)

Junny Baller, a 40-year-old truck driver with 18 years of driving experience, knows all too well the demands of his job. He shared how he had to spend countless nights awake on the road, even with a backup driver. They need to be constantly mindful of their surroundings and be on the lookout not only for the dangers of the road but also for the condition of their trucks. A minor breakdown can sometimes set them back days, affecting everything.

When it comes to road safety, Joel Beriño, a 34-year-old truck driver with nearly a decade of experience, offers an important piece of advice on maintaining the right mindset while driving: “Hindi mo alam ang mga posibleng mangyari kapag nasa kalsada kaya, importante na tayo mismo bilang mga truck driver, pinapractice natin palagi yung defensive driving. Kasi kapag defensive driver ka, you can save lives, save time, and save money,” Beriño explained.

(You never know what might happen on the road, so, as truck drivers, we must consistently practice defensive driving. Being a defensive driver enables us to save lives, save time, and save money.)

Shell Rimula offers a range of mineral and synthetic based engine oils that use adaptive technology to provide outstanding wear and engine protection; from 20W-40, 15W-40, to 10W-40. Shell Rimula engine oils meet the latest API rating that is required in the market.

The Visayas and Mindanao legs of Shell Rimula’s Garahe ng Galing will be held in Cebu and Cagayan de Oro City, respectively, to reach more truck drivers and mechanics in the rural areas of the country and provide them with access to learning and upskilling opportunities.
