Third-person hero shooters. You love them, you hate them, you find a way to play them because your friends or the Internet (most likely both) rope you into them. But what happens when one of the most beloved franchises of all time in Marvel meets one of the most popular video game genres of all time in hero shooters? You get Marvel Rivals, a hero shooter with all of your favorite Marvel characters ready to face off against one another. From fan favorites such as Spider-Man to obscure characters like Cloak & Dagger, every Marvel fan from the casual to hardcore have a reason to at least check out the latest 6v6 hero shooter from NetEase Games.
The game is free, although there are unlockable items through a purchasable Battle Pass. Just like most 6v6 shooters, there are roles: tank, damage, and support. Marvel Rivals calls them Vanguard, Duelist, and Strategist. There are five lobbies: Tutorial, Quick Match, Pocket Universe, Competitive, and Custom, which allows players to make their own game modes.
Considering this is an online game, at the time of writing this review, there are only a few game types. You can push the payload on Convoy maps, capturing points on the map in Domination maps (Marvel Rivals even takes the game mode name from the Call of Duty franchise), and Convergence, a King of the Hill-esque mode where players fight over a single changing area on the map. While I expected at least some level of innovation, perhaps my expectations were a bit high by the standards of the video game industry in 2024.
Learning all of the characters will take some time. One of my favorite characters is Psylocke, who falls into the B-tier of Marvel heroes: not beloved like Spider-Man or Iron Man, but not obscure either. She has a mix of melee and ranged attacks, but a fan favorite (and perhaps a boon or detriment depending on if you’re playing with or against him) is Jeff the Land Shark, who has gained meme status in the game itself due to his status as one of the lesser-known Marvel characters, his appearance of being a shark that acts like a dog, and his ultimate ability of sucking everyone into a whirlpool and spitting them out in all directions.
Speaking of ultimate abilities, Marvel Rivals does something Overwatch has never done in its eight years of existence—allow unite abilities called Team-Ups. While you could technically mix and match ultimate abilities in Overwatch, it required teamwork and strategy to pull off. Marvel Rivals takes it to new heights. While still requiring teamwork and strategy like any other multiplayer game, you can add both passive and active abilities when you mix and match certain characters. Teaming Magik with Black Panther or Psylocke can give you the Limbo ability, which rewinds time a couple of seconds and gives bonus health if they lose health within that time period. Another powerful one is Ragnarok Rebirth, which requires Hela and either Thor or Loki. After Hela kills an enemy, either Thor or Loki can be resurrected. If they’re still alive, she gives them 100 bonus health, which could be a huge advantage if you’re turning the tide of the game in your favor.
What really let me down is not letting the entire lobby view my Play of the Game—something I relished especially when sealing clutch victories with game-deciding ultimates in Overwatch, but that is replaced by viewing each player’s individual highlights, which means everyone gets into the action, whether they’re brand new or scaling the heights of Competitive Mode. The maps aren’t too bad, but there are only eight of them right now, and hopefully, more are on the way, given the ever-expanding nature of the Marvel Universe. You can also unlock cosmetic items that give your players some variation in look, but some of the best cosmetic items are still locked behind getting out your wallet and making a few microtransactions.
Did Marvel Rivals give NetEase a way in when it came to the overcrowded hero shooter genre? Absolutely, although I’d like to see more franchises take this approach and see what they can do with it. While it is something I’d love to spend hours and hours with my friends on, I can also acknowledge that innovation is key when it comes to games, and that is something we need more of in gaming going into 2025.

Seamless pairing and multipoint Bluetooth connectivity. Setting up the headphones took only seconds, and switching between my laptop and smartphone while working was incredibly smooth. The ability to take calls on one device and resume playback on another without any manual intervention was a standout convenience.
The multi-directional knob is one of the most intuitive controls I’ve encountered. It made adjusting the volume, skipping tracks, and managing calls effortless, particularly in situations when handling my phone would have been inconvenient.
Sound quality is another highlight, though not without its quirks. The bold, dynamic profile of the Major V delivered an immersive experience across genres, especially for rock tracks and energetic playlists. However, I found the sound a bit too bass-heavy for my personal preference, as I tend to favor clearer tones that highlight intricate details in acoustic and orchestral tracks. Fortunately, the Marshall app’s equalizer allowed me to adjust the sound to better suit my taste, ensuring a more balanced listening experience.
Battery life lives up to the hype. During testing, I went nearly a week without needing a recharge, even with daily use. A quick 15-minute charge gives plenty of playback for the day ahead, reinforcing how convenient the Major V is for on-the-go lifestyles.

Over the past year, there have been several electric vehicle (EV) launches in the country. Most are priced at over two million pesos, with others sitting in the PHP1.5 to PHP1.8-million range. While the electrified future is exciting, cars at these price points are still a hard sell for Filipinos, most of whom are still on the fence about EVs. That was before BYD Cars Philippines changed the game. Meet the BYD Seagull: a sub-one-million-peso EV that could very well be your first electric car.
Design: 4.5/5
The BYD Seagull is quite a looker. Many reviewers and motoring journalists have described it as a “baby Lambo,” and you can definitely see the resemblance with the sharp drop of its hood.
The sides feature a few sharp lines that blend with the car’s body—perhaps more noticeable because of the vibrant Sprout Green color. Below each door, there are “BYD Blade Battery” labels, though these don’t indicate the actual battery location. The car rides on 16-inch wheels with disc brakes on all four corners, while wide LED taillights and a small top-mounted spoiler with an integrated brake light highlight the rear.
Size-wise, the BYD Seagull is a small hatchback, putting it in the same category as the Toyota Wigo, Honda Brio, Suzuki Celerio, and Suzuki S-Presso. Its dimensions are listed at 3,780 x 1,715 x 1,580mm, with a wheelbase of 2,500mm. That long wheelbase translates to more legroom for passengers, giving it an edge in its segment.
One major concern with the Seagull is its published ground clearance—just 120mm laden. On paper, it seems too low. But in practice, I’ve had no issues tackling the bumps and potholes of CAMANAVA and EDSA, even with five passengers onboard.

The BYD Seagull is fully electric, powered by a 30kWh BYD Blade Battery (Lithium Iron Phosphate), giving it an NEDC-rated range of 300km on a single full charge. A front-mounted Permanent Magnet Synchronous (PMS) motor delivers 75PS and 135Nm of torque.
When it comes to tech, the Seagull takes a simpler approach compared to its pricier siblings. It features a basic TFT LCD instrument cluster, standard cruise control, a rear camera with sensors, and no major ADAS, though it does have Auto Hold. There are three driving modes—Normal, Eco, and Sport—and traction control for sand and snow.
As for the toys, the car has a 10.1-inch infotainment display that rotates 90 degrees, supporting wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. A wireless charger replaces the middle console, while unique touches include an NFC card that acts as a smart key alternative. The BYD app integration also lets you monitor real-time vehicle data like charging percentage and even remotely start the car.
Comfort-wise, the Seagull comes with leather seats all around and auto-climate air conditioning, though vents and controls are limited to the front. On the safety side, it’s equipped with four airbags, Traction Control, Electronic Stability Control, ABS, Hydraulic Brake Assist, EBD, Hill Start Assist, a Tire Pressure Monitoring System, and more.
User Experience: 4.5/5
After driving the Seagull for over a month, I can confidently say it has brought back the joy of driving for me. It doesn’t have the horsepower or torque of more expensive EVs, but it feels great behind the wheel. Steering is light yet precise, and being an EV, power and torque are instantaneous. If BYD could fine-tune the motor and suspension, this could easily be a fun little hot hatch.
What impressed me most was how planted the Seagull felt on the road. The battery’s weight and placement help maintain a low center of gravity, making it stable even on twisty mountain roads. On highways, overtaking is a breeze—even in Eco mode. Sport mode, however, takes the driving experience up a notch, putting a grin on my face as it zips through the expressway.
Space-wise, the Seagull offers one of the best rear passenger accommodations in its class. Taller passengers won’t struggle to get in or out of the back. The trade-off, however, is its limited trunk space. At 230-liters, it’s good for a couple of medium-sized suitcases or boxes. Folding the rear seats expands the cargo area but reduces passenger capacity.
In terms of energy efficiency, the Seagull is decent but not groundbreaking. It averages 10kWh per 100km, according to its onboard monitor. Real-world range during the holidays was around 210km, although I often charged it when it hit 30%, with about 70km of range left.
Charging the Seagull has been a cost-saver. In two months, I’ve saved around PHP7,000–8,000 on fuel. Most of my charging was free, thanks to mall charging stations and our home solar setup. That said, some malls now charge per kWh. Charging times depend on the method: 4.5 hours for a full charge using the included 7kW wall charger, 30 minutes for 30–80% using a DC fast charger (max 30kW), and 10 hours with the portable 3kW charger. Its V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) capability also turns it into a giant power bank for home appliances.
In two months, the Seagull has taken over as our daily driver, replacing our MPV—a testament to its practicality and reliability.

At its introductory price of PHP898,000, the BYD Seagull is a game-changer. Even at its regular price of PHP938,000, it remains an affordable gateway into the EV market. It’s a compelling choice for first-time car buyers or as a secondary vehicle, thanks to its driving dynamics, tech, and savings on fuel and maintenance. Plus, there’s the bonus of being exempt from coding.
However, condo dwellers or those without reliable home charging might want to wait. Mall charging, while convenient, is becoming less reliable as EV adoption grows. Thankfully, the future of EV infrastructure looks bright. The DOE recently finalized rules requiring gas stations to install chargers under the EVIDA Law, and companies like ACMobility are rapidly expanding charging networks across the country.
Final Thoughts
The BYD Seagull makes the EV dream accessible to more Filipinos. Its affordable price, practicality, and fun driving experience make it a solid choice for anyone looking to embrace the electrified future.

I have been with Gadgets for about half of its existence—a long time in terms of technological advances. Since then, smartphones and other gadgets have only gotten better. There were moments of uncertainty in the technology world and one of them just happened to be one that I bore witness to—the Y2K bug. Why was it such a big deal, and what came out of it?
Most reports centered around the Y2K bug came about because computers read dates as two digits—for example, January 1, 1999, read as 1/1/99, and thus the clock turning over to January 1, 2000, would cause confusion as computers would read it as not January 1, 2000, but rather, January 1, 1900, or 1/1/00. The reason dates only read two digits instead of four is because mainframe computers and personal computing memory were expensive. Some reports priced memory at USD10/KB to over USD100/KB in 1975 (USD59.10-USD591.03 in 2024 dollars), and in attempts to lower the prices and make them accessible to everyone, many manufacturers chose to use two digits for the date instead of four. The assumption for this was to expand the use of computers at the cost of allegedly rendering them useless by the year 2000.
The earliest reports of the Y2K bug began as far back as 1958, when Bob Bemer noticed that this would be an issue when he was working with genealogical software. He attempted to bring this issue up with various stakeholders ranging from fellow programmers to IBM to the United States federal government and even international organizations such as the International Organization for Standardization for 20 years, recommending the COBOL picture clause should be used to specify four-digit years for dates.
The first time that this issue was addressed online was as early as 1985 on a Usenet newsgroup. Spencer Bolles said, “I have a friend that raised an interesting question that I immediately tried to prove wrong. He is a programmer and has this notion that when we reach the year 2000, computers will not accept the new date. Will the computers assume that it is 1900, or will it even cause a problem?” His questions began to gain traction in the 1990s, when Computerworld ran an article by Peter de Jager about “Doomsday 2000,” and other programmers, such as David Eddy, coined the term Y2K in 1995.
The problem even gained the attention of the United States Department of Defense. “The Y2K problem is the electronic equivalent of the El Nino and there will be nasty surprises around the globe,” said former United States Deputy Secretary of Defense John Hamre. The brokerage industry made moves to address this in the 1980s, namely because bonds had maturity dates beyond the year 2000. The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) hired 100 programmers to address these issues, spending USD20 million on the Y2K issue.
Date programming had to be changed as well; credit card systems saw bugs as early as 1997, with processing issues happening with cards that had expiration dates beyond the year 2000, and a lawsuit was even filed over this issue. Microsoft Excel, the C programming language, JavaScript, UNIX, and the Windows 3.x file manager had to make adjustments, not to mention a slew of other programs, applications, and more. Some solutions, such as date expansion to four digits, date windowing, date compression, and more, were also proposed for legacy systems.
What happened on January 1, 2000, itself? Anything that used a computer was affected, but the extent varied. Reports from various countries included minor glitches such as deleting new text messages to nuclear plant radiation monitoring systems failing in Japan, a video store incorrectly assessing a USD92,150 late fee due to a tape being 100 years overdue in the United States, 30,000 cash registers printing receipts with 1900 dates in Greece, and more. It is estimated that the cost of the work done to prepare for Y2K was more than USD300 billion, although the final cost may be unknown due to the variation of errors and the severity of such errors. A recent software failure by CrowdStrike in 2024 also brought down computers worldwide and was also compared to the Y2K bug.
After January 1, 2000, came and went with much fanfare and (relatively) little effect on technology, people got back to their lives with ever-increasing importance on gadgets and technology. While there are many issues that technology still has to address to this very day, people are now more proactive than ever with events similar to Y2K. In fact, I myself learned about issues involving the years 2010 and 2022, which went virtually unnoticed compared to Y2K. While we continue to rely on technology, we have to be proactive about solving issues created by technology as well, and the Y2K bug was one of the examples where prevention helped, even though the impact was not as big as people expected it to be.

Lumaniag, Lian, Batangas by the end of 2024. This is in line with Hyundai’s global vision, Progress for Humanity, which drives the brand to create meaningful change, not just through its vehicle line-up but also through initiatives that enrich lives and sustain the environment.
Last November 29, HMPH employees together with RAFI and Samahan ng mga Mandaragat sa Sulok (SAMLOK) worked together to plant the first batch of mangroves. Dream Green is a local initiative of Hyundai Motor Company’s global campaign where Hyundai subsidiaries from around the globe plant trees named under the IONIQ Forest, coined from the IONIQ brand, which represents Hyundai’s dedication to building a better world through a cleaner and more sustainable lifestyle.
Present at the Dream Green activity were HMPH executives Mr. Jiho Son, president; Mr. Cecil Capacete, managing director; and Mr. Hongshik Chin, chief financial officer. Also in attendance were representatives from RAFI’s management, Ms. Amaya Cristina A. Fansler, CEO and president, Ms. Mariefe del Mundo community and stakeholder engagement manager.
