Kia Motors PH opens slots for OJT student trainees

    0

Columbian Autocar Corporation (CAC), the exclusive distributor of Kia Motors in the Philippines, and its Aftersales Division, recently opened its doors to students for a special on-the-job training program.

Qualified trade school students will be given a highly specialized two-week familiarization on Kia technology and features, which the students can then apply during their 4-week training at Kia dealerships.

CAC Aftersales Director, Apollo  Rosal, shared more about this new initiative: “Kia Aftersales’ OJT program aims to create a pool of skilled and technically proficient students that will be job-ready by the time they graduate. We want to equip students with practical know-how and at the same time, introduce them to great opportunities as a future Kia technician or service advisor.”

Rosal added, “Exposing students to challenges in a real work environment is something that cannot be replicated in a classroom or taught from a textbook. We hope that students will find Kia’s OJT program to be productive, rewarding, and informative.”

Kia partnered with Crossroads Training Institute, Inc. and Kia Nueva Ecija for the initial batch of interns who will be deployed to Kia Cagayan de Oro and Kia Nueva Ecija, respectively.

At the end of the 6-week program, eligible interns who have shown potential and exceptional skill during the training will be referred to Kia dealerships for possible employment.

The Kia OJT Program will start on June 6 and will culminate with the awarding of certificates on June 17.

In the future, the OJT program shall be opened to all interested trade schools.

    • Connectivity: Dual-SIM, Wi-Fi 802.11, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC
    • Battery: 3300 mAh

    What’s Hot:

    • TheaterMax feature; bundled with VR headset
    • Responsive fingerprint sensor
    • Light, yet solid in the hand

    What’s Not:

    • Flimsy back cover
    • Camera output could be better

Lenovo takes entertainment to a whole new level with TheaterMax built right into the Vibe K4 Note. Is this just a plain gimmick to call attention in the though mid-range competition or is it a revolutionary game-changer, read on.

    Design: (3.5/5)

The Lenovo Vibe K4 Note, unlike its higher-end sibling, X3, flaunts an all-plastic form-factor. This, however, doesn’t make it less good-looking. What this contributed is an overall light smartphone that does give off a sense of firmness in the hand. There is also a shift in terms of design. Instead of a phone that feels and looks flat, Lenovo crafted the K4 Note with curves to further enhance its dexterity.

Right on the front of the K4 Note are common features, along with its 5.5-inch full-HD IPS display, such as a front snapper and three capacitive control buttons. What makes it a bit different from competitors are two speaker grilles–top and bottom—upfront, which are nice additions to what would have been just a bland-looking handset. The edges are in chrome and seat the volume rocker, power/lock button, micro-USB port, and audio jack in its rightful positions. On its rear are the camera and flash, fingerprint sensor, and faint Lenovo and Dolby Atmos logo elsewhere.

    Hardware: (4/5)

Popping off the back panel, which has a nice velvety-matte finish to it, will reveal two micro SIM slots flanked on either side of the camera and fingerprint scanner. Meanwhile, just right below is the battery but with sealed with a sticker that says “Don’t remove,” which basically means it isn’t user-replaceable.

The K4 Note is powered by an octa-core MediaTek MT6753 processor that clocks at 1.3GHz and is paired with 3 GBs of RAM, which is quite a powerful combination for a mid-range smartphone. This allows seamless multi-tasking and a performance sure not to disappoint. There’s also 16 GB of on board storage you can fill with your movies, games, and whatnot. And if that’s not enough for you, you can expand it up to 128 GB with the help of a memory card.

Added to the loot is the TheaterMax function that works best with the ANTVR headset bundled to it. We’ll get on to that in a bit. As for the snappers, you have a 13MP main camera with a dual-tone LED flash and is complemented by a simple-to-use app. Photos taken with the rear camera come out nice and sharp with much emphasis on details, given ample light. Contrast is also good, but if I were to point out a flaw it would have to be with the lack of punch in colors. If you zoom in closely, segments in the image appear white-washed. As for the 5 MP front snapper, you get okay photos that are above par for selfies. Also, the cameras are capable of recording videos at 1080p.

    User Experience: (3.5/5)

The Lenovo Vibe K4 Note runs Android  5.1 which is smoothly interlaced with the company’s Vibe UI. If you’ve been reading our Lenovo phone reviews in the past, it’s pretty much the same efficient experience. What’s new this time is TheaterMax, Lenovo’s VR technology that enables the phone to turn any video into augmented reality with just a firm push of a button.

    vr-glasses-antvr-khusus-untuk-ponsel-lenovo-rhy

How does it work? Once you’ve selected a movie you want to watch, press down the power/lock button until a list of option appears, select VR mode, slip your phone right into the bundled ANTVR headset, and be sucked into an awesome entertainment experience right then and there. What TheaterMax does with the video is it splits it in half, giving you a split-screen which the VR headset would turn into an immersive viewing experience. Pair this with this its built-in Dolby Audio technology and you’d likely wouldn’t even bother to leave home. The experience itself is quite okay as I’m not new to the whole virtual reality thing. I’m not sure if it’s just me or if there was something missing in the equation. It might have something to do with the ANTVR headset cause I found myself closing the sides with my hands when I tested it. But don’t get the wrong idea, it is still a great combination.

    Value: (4/5)

For only 10,990, you’d get a phone bundled with a VR headset, efficient fingerprint scanner, stunning 5.5-inch screen, powerful processor, and an excellent software that ties all these together to make a value-for-money entertainment device.

    Bottomline:

New to virtual reality? Let the Lenovo Vibe K4 Note indulge you in all its addicting goodness.

This six-episode original story is a take-off on the multi-award winning masterpiece OTJ, a Filipino crime thriller inspired by actual indignities that take place within Philippine penitentiaries and politics. Director Erik Matti shared that this mini-series they’re currently working on will revolve around hard-hitting topics in Philippine society including themes from the movie and social and mass media that needs to be told. Counterfeit HP print cartridges and components discovered in Cebu by authorities

    gh

HP announced the seizure of about PhP 900,000.00 worth of counterfeit print cartridges and components by local authorities in Cebu, protecting customers from fraudulent products.

The authorities raided the office and warehouses of a counterfeiting operation and took legal actions. They seized hundreds of counterfeit toner cartridges, ink cartridges as well as counterfeit components. HP collaborated with local law enforcement to make this action possible.

HP engages in industry-leading anti-counterfeiting practices to combat the fraudulent manufacture, distribution and sale of counterfeit HP supplies. These raids have helped reduce the number of counterfeit cartridges that will affect customers’ high-quality printing experience.

Photo_Counterfeit operations in Cebu raided by authorities

“With counterfeit HP print cartridges, customers purchase what they often assume to be a genuine HP product, but they instead receive a cartridge that provides them with an inferior print experience.” said an HP spokesperson. “HP is committed to protect our customers and ensure they receive the right cartridge that prints in high quality when they choose Original HP print cartridges.”

HP adopts a proactive approach to help customers identify counterfeit print supplies. An Original HP print cartridge has a security label with unique features such as a QR code and a serial number that can be validated on HP’s website (www.hp.com/go/ok). In addition, the HP Tamper Evident Label1 on HP LaserJet Toner cartridges responds to heat and water exposure as well as cuts or rips. More information is available at this link.

Quick Look: LG Stylus 2 Plus—writing on the big screen.

There are only a few smartphone manufacturers out there that create devices with styli. LG is one such brand and they’ve just released the LG Stylus 2 Plus, a 5.7 inch Android Marshmallow phablet with better innards than its smaller namesake. Specifically, it struts a 1920 x 1080 Full HD display, an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor clocked at 1.4 GHz, 2/3 GB RAM and 16/32 GB expandable internal storage options, and a 3000 mAh battery pack. It also struts 13/16 MP and 5/8 MP shooters at the back and front, respectively. The specifications will vary according to the country. Here’s hoping that the Philippines will receive the higher spec’ed trim.

The stylus will have a special nano coating and will not be rubber tipped to make the whole writing experience more akin to pen on paper than stick on screen.

    Quick Specs:

    • Processor: Octa-core Qualcomm MSM8937 Snapdragon 430 @ 1.4 GHz
    • GPU: Adreno 505
    • RAM: 2/3 GB RAM
    • Memory: 16/32 GB internal storage, microSD expandable up to 128 GB

Quick Look: AMD Radeon RX 480—bang for the buck giant slayer?

If you thought the Nvidia GTX 1080 and 1070 were impressive, then behold the AMD Radeon RX 480—a normal-looking card that should again hold true the saying “don’t judge a book by its cover.” It carries some of the design cues of the Fury and Fury X flagships, including the dotted shroud and Radeon typeface. It also sports a blower style cooling solution on its face, the PCIE fingers at the bottom, and  DisplayPort 1.3/1.4, HDMI 2.0b, and exhaust grille at the side. The top carries the lone 6-pin connector to fulfil the card’s 150 W power requirement.

You read that right. 150 W is all it takes to run this puppy. It achieves this thanks to the new Polaris architecture and new 14 nm FinFET manufacturing process allowing it to be more powerful than the mid-range R9 380 while sipping less power. Though details are pretty thin as of the moment, we can confirm that the RX 480 will arrive with 36 compute units; 256 GB/s of memory bandwidth; 4/8 GB GDDR5 memory on a 256-bit bus; and support for AMD FreeSync technology. In an Ashes of the Singularity benchmark, two RX 480s were able to edge a lone GTX 1080 62.5 to 58.7 fps, with prices of less than USD 500 and USD 700 respectively.

The specs should also allow the card to easily handle VR which it was made for. Currently, you can only get a proper (as in not your smartphone attached to a Google Cardboard or some similar accessory) virtual reality experience with a GPU that’s around the USD 500 mark. The RX 480, on the other hand, promises flawless VR and overall performance at a price of—drum roll please…

USD 199—around the same price as current mid-range cards but with significantly more oomph.

    Quick Specs:

    • Tflops: >5
    • Compute Units: 36
    • Memory Bandwidth: 256 GB/s
    • Memory Size: 4/8 GB GDDR5
    • Memory Bit Rate: 256-bit
    • Power: 150 W
    • VR Premium: Yes
    • AMD FreeSync: Yes
    • Display Port: 1.3/1.4 HDR

Sports Enthusiasts Celebrate Active Lifestyle at Vermosa Bike Night Carnival

To further push the pedals towards an active lifestyle, as well as support a growing trend of ageless, health-conscious Filipinos, Vermosa—Ayala Land’s 700-hectare master-planned, mix-use estate development in Cavite—formally launched the Vermosa Bike Skills Park last May 28, along with rolling out the Bike Night Carnival, the first of its activities slated for the year.

The Bike Night Carnival took place in the country’s only premier, purpose-built mountain bike skills park inside the Vermosa which is located along Daang Hari road—one of South Luzon’s hottest cycling spots. The unique spectacle featured the first-ever night events for cycling—the night cross-country mountain bike race and the pump track challenge.

The Carnival gathered cycling and biking enthusiasts from Metro Manila, Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, and as far as Visayas and Mindanao. Also in attendance was professional cyclist, track builder, and Fox Athlete, Parabanne “Bans” Mendoza—who operated the skills tracks and shared his knowledge of the sport to the participants.

“I hope to encourage people towards an active lifestyle through biking. I have taken what I learned from training and competing abroad to design the Vermosa Bike Skills Park so more Filipinos can hone their skills and become world-class riders as well,” said Bans.

The Bike Night Carnival started with the Toddy Kid’s Bike Race where participants eagerly tested the trail while showcasing their skills. Vermosa also brought in world-class professional riders Sam Flanagan and Ali Parkin of TRIPPIN’ FELLAZ (Hope Technology Riders) and renowned Fox Athlete Josh Lewis to share their signature moves and tricks with local riders in a one-of-a-kind bike clinic.

As dusk fell, the first XDS Night Cross-Country Short Circuit Race got underway with contenders out-pedaling each other in the Men’s Age Group, Men’s Elite, and Women’s Friendship Race divisions. Mellisa Jaroda of Team Ground Zero topped the women’s race while Alvin Benosa and Julius Ahleem Zape —both from BMC Philippines MTB Racing Team—bagged first place finishes in the Men’s Elite and Men’s Age Group, respectively.

Team Ground Zero’s Niño Martin Eday won in the Lapierre Night Pump Track Challenge elite division to go on an all-expenses-paid trip to Singapore to represent the country in the Red Bull Dark Knights nighttime urban downhill biking competition.

Top winners in the Night Pump Track challenge in the novice category took home a Lapierre bike, while a GT bike was raffled off to a lucky event participant. Other race winners also received Fox gear and apparel.

The Bike Night Carnival was sponsored by Ayala Land, Ayala Land Premier, The Courtyards, Fox Head Philippines, Lapierre, GT Bikes, Chaoyang Tires, Red Bull, Cherry Mobile, Commencal, Hope Technology, KTM, Green Planet, Joe’s Brew, Dan’s Bike Shop, Gran Trail Cycles, Niner, Bike Town Cyclery, DVO Suspension, Toddy Kids Bicycles, Spyder, and Sandugo.

“We will work together with Vermosa to provide the best quality biking and cycling activities and competitions,” said Mendoza. Among the activities to watch out for are exciting biking clinics from June to December.

With its bike skills park and other amenities, discover and push the pedals towards living the healthier and active lifestyle that you’ve always wanted in Vermosa, Ayala Land’s newest master-planned estate and the premier destination for “new age” sports. To stay updated on further events and more cycling activities and biking clinics, visit Vermosa Estate’s official Facebook page @Vermosaph or log on to www.vermosa.ph.

PlayStation 4 Sales Break 40 Million Mark

The three-year-old Sony PlayStation 4 has already broke the 40 million sales barrier last May 22, 2016 and is well on its way to tying the last-gen PlayStation 3’s 83 million record. Currently the best-selling console from the brand, the PS4 continues to attract game developers and publishers, and has over 270.9 million copies of software sold through both physical retail stores and the PlayStation digital store.

“We are truly grateful for the enormous support from our fans and partners across the globe, which helped us achieve this significant milestone in such a short span of time,” said Andrew House, president and global CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE).  “We will strive to deliver even more exciting gaming experiences to our users, further driving the momentum and accelerating the expansion of the PS4 platform and its business this fiscal year by offering an unparalleled line-up of games, bringing our virtual reality system, PlayStation VR, to market and providing ground-breaking features and network services.”

On the software side of the spectrum, the recently released Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End managed to sell more than 2.7 million copies in just one week. SIE is hopeful that upcoming titles such as Final Fantasy XV, Nioh, Ryu Ga Gotoku, Gran Turismo Sport, Gravity Rush 2, and The Last Guardian will receive the same strong openings. The company is also looking forward to the performance of indie games, including Downwell, Jotun, and Push Me Pull You.

Ilocos Sur student receives scholarship grant from Carmudi PH

    new_carmudi_logo_blue1 (1)

British Novelist and well-known author C.S. Lewis once said, “You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” This is what Kristine Ian De Guzman, a single mother and graduating student at Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College, believes in life as she pursues her dreams despite of financial difficulties.

De Guzman, a senior student taking up a degree in Information System Major in Interactive Technology, shares her encouraging story on how she is currently fulfilling her dreams. “We lost our father 25 years ago. From that moment, we already knew that we can’t finish our studies anymore. Money at home was very tight and we don’t have an option but to embrace the reality.”

“After taking BS Nursing in 2005, I stopped my studies abruptly and focused instead on getting a job. When I gave birth to my son, I knew there will be no chance for me to finish my studies,” explained De Guzman.

But her son who serves as her biggest inspiration gave her hope to fulfill her dreams. Despite her personal and financial struggles, De Guzman took and applied for Career Service Examination Professional Level, which is prerequisite qualification for anyone who wants to get a job in the government.

    pic with Dr

“When I passed the CSE, I realized there’s still hope for me,” adds De Guzman, as she continued to narrate how she slowly strove to hunt for her elusive dream.

Without any money in hand, De Guzman mustered the courage to enroll, even as an irregular student. “After one semester, I decided to apply for a scholarship program granted by CHED. For two and a half years, I was able to work hard to get high grades and maintain my scholarship. I thank God for getting consistent grades and being a replacement scholar for 5 semesters,” shares De Guzman.

“I am so blessed this year. After finishing my scholarship with CHED, Carmudi Philippines granted me a new scholarship program that will enable me to fulfil my dreams,” said De Guzman.

The 27-year-old De Guzman was chosen by online car platform Carmudi as its recipient scholar for her outstanding grades and attitude towards her circumstances. The scholarship program aims to help senior students who are academically excellent but financially challenged.

“In line with our commitment towards being a responsible corporate citizen, it is our honor to support excellence in academe and provide the economic means for gifted students to move ahead on their educational path. We wish our scholars all the best in their future endeavors,” said Abhi Mohan, Managing Director of Carmudi Philippines.
