    Hands-on: The HTC One

    1

    WP_20130422_014

HTC is a brand that believes that your product must speak for itself. You can have the greatest hype machine in the business, but sooner or later, people are going to see through the smoke and mirrors and expectations will be shattered. Though mostly quiet, the brand has never failed to impress with their devices. Of their phones, though, one of the most anticipated devices or recent memory has been the One. Their first foray into the aluminum uni-body construction arena, early photos for the device created quite a buzz in the Android community as well as the rest of the smartphone world, and for good reason. The device is gorgeous.

It has, unfortunately, taken a while to hit the shores of our country. It isn’t technically here yes, but the folks at HTC were kind enough to hold a little pre-launch event for a select few, in order to give us a glimpse at the HTC One.

    WP_20130422_004

I have personally been waiting for this device for some time now. Having lost my phone in an unfortunate skydiving incident some months back (just kidding, I dropped it in a cab,) I have been waiting for the next device to add to the growing list of smartphones I have owned through the years. There was the amazing HTC Butterfly a few months back, and while that is a pretty solid device, I knew there was going to be more. When I finally got to hold the HTC One, I knew where my next few paychecks would be going. The words that come to mind to describe just how sexy this phone is would be inappropriate to use on a phone. The construction is rock-solid. From the seamless single-piece aluminum back panel, to the sleek Gorilla Glass front and wonderfully curved back, it’s a device that just oozes quality. The device is great in hand when you hold it for any amount of time, you know it is meant to be there, preferably without a case of any sort. It’s a phone you will want to hold every chance you get.

    WP_20130422_020

The next thing you notice is the display. It’s a very comfortable 4.7 inches in size and with a screen density of about 469 ppi, it blows all other devices clear out of the water–even the already beautiful screen of the HTC Butterfly. This makes HTC’s default home screen, BlinkFeed, look even more amazing. BinkFeed is basically HTC’s take on a news aggregator, and is implemented very nicely. All the news from any number of BlinkFeed’s 1300 partner sources can be posted on the home screen. The app even stores the stories offline when it has the chance, so you won’t have to use up your mobile data just to have a quick snack on info from any of your feeds. Even though it gives you great eye candy, the app remains fast, thanks to some serious hardware under the hood. The One runs Android Jelly Bean 4.1.2 with the HTC sense overlay on top.

the camera has the same 4 shots/sec burst capability as other HTC phones, plus advanced editing features, right out of the box
The camera has the same 4 shots/sec burst capability as other HTC phones, plus advanced editing features, right out of the box.

HTC has always been known to take mobile photography seriously. The One is no different. Apart from a sensor that is larger than some dedicated cameras, it comes out of the box with a suite of camera apps that further improve the photography experience. From taking photo-quality video clips when you press the shutter, to advanced algorithms that allow you to cut out unwanted photo elements, and combine multiple frames into one, the One’s camera is a snapper that you will love to have, and use a lot. We were very very impressed with the low-light performance of the One. Colors came out very well, and photos in the dim venue of the event were only the slightest bit noisy. Low-light performance is key in a mobile phone, since chances are, you’ll be using it to record nights out, parties and other events in less than ideal lighting conditions.

    WP_20130422_010
Speakers are located on the top and bottom of the One’s face.

Sound has also been a major focus of the brand, and the One might be the HTC phone that takes audio most seriously. For calls, the phone keeps an ear out for ambient noise, and bumps the treble up for the speaker’s voice, allowing it to stand out from the rest of the sounds in the background. It also picks up a greater range of frequencies than most mobile phones on the market, so sound recording comes out much fuller. This allows you to record music say, for example, a concert, and play it back at a quality much higher than you would expect from a phone. the One also has playback covered. On most mobile phones, the speakers are located on the rear or sides of the device. This makes sharing audio difficult and more than a little awkward. Apart from having great hardware to handle audio playback, the HTC One’s speakers are located on the front of the device. Yes “speakers.” With an “s.” The One features front-facing stereo speakers that make short work of music sharing and video watching. They have enough power to share music with a small group of friends, or fill a room without the need for an external set of drivers.

One solid piece of metal. Everything should be made this way.
One solid piece of metal. Everything should be made this way.

HTC has boasted that these are only three of about 300 upgrades to the device. There was really only time to scratch the surface of the abilities of the HTC One. Those who are eager to get their hands on the device will have to wait a little while. Availability here in the Philippines is slated to be some time in May, but they will be taking pre-orders very soon. We were told to watch the HTC Philippines’ Facebook page HERE for news about the start of pre-ordering.

Oh, and for those who are interested, the phone is going to go for PHP32,990, which is a great deal for one of the best, most beautiful phones in the market today.

University of Illinois researchers create battery that can charge your smartphone in one second

You’d probably think that some scientific law was being violated if someone told you that your smartphone could be charged from empty to full in only one second—but a group of researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have created micro-batteries that will do exactly that. The group, led by William King, created a battery that can fit in a credit-card thin size device. In comparison, current devices are around 10 mm thick.

“The thinking parts of computers have gotten small. And the battery has lagged far behind. This is a microtechnology that could change all of that. Now the power source is as high-performance as the rest of it,” said King. Energy storage solutions right now involve a lot of trade-offs—either lots of power (watts) or lots of energy (watt-hours). Supercapacitors can release a massive amount of power, but only for a few seconds; fuel cells can store a vast amount of energy, but are limited in their peak power output. Currently, the battery of choice in our devices tend to be lithium ion (Li-Ion) batteries, but even those batteries have their limits.

“There’s a sacrifice,” said James Pikul, a graduate student and first author of the paper. “If you want high energy you can’t get high power; if you want high power it’s very difficult to get high energy. But for very interesting applications, especially modern applications, you really need both. That’s what our batteries are starting to do. We’re really pushing into an area in the energy storage design space that is not currently available with technologies today.”

The battery that is being developed at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will have both power and energy. According to the university’s press release, “With so much power, the batteries could enable sensors or radio signals that broadcast 30 times farther, or devices 30 times smaller. The batteries are rechargeable and can charge 1,000 times faster than competing technologies—imagine juicing up a credit-card-thin phone in less than a second. In addition to consumer electronics, medical devices, lasers, sensors and other applications could see leaps forward in technology with such power sources available.”

With this new battery, there could be a radical change in how our devices are made. “Now we can think outside of the box,” Pikul said. “It’s a new enabling technology. It’s not a progressive improvement over previous technologies; it breaks the normal paradigms of energy sources. It’s allowing us to do different, new things.”

    The Suzuki Invasion hits Cebu

    0

After a successful series of events last year, the motorcycle division of Suzuki Philippines re-lauched the Suzuki Invasion series last month. The Suzuki Philippines Motorcycle team is next heading to Cebu to entertain motorcycle enthusiasts with great performances, and offer quality motorcycle service to their loyal customers in the area. This year’s Suzuki Invasion series has prepared the public launch of the Fuel Injected version of their already popular 125 Hayate. This motorcycle’s huge engine displacement, coupled with discharge pump fuel injection makes for a motorcycle that has power in any environment, with greater fuel efficiency. The Hayate 125 also boasts of the signature Suzuki Composite Electrochemical Material (SCEM)—guaranteeing durability and better heat conductivity.

The event will also be host to other fun activities such as the “Show Me the Moves” dance contest, motorcycle exhibition challenges and free motorcycle service, all in the jewel of the south, Cebu. The program is free for all, and includes Suzuki’s “Learn to Ride” motorcycle safety seminar, done in partnership with the Land Transportation Office. Suzuki Ambassadors Ramon Bautista and 6cyclemind will also be present at most stops to reach out and reward existing Suzuki motorcycle riders for their continuous support, as well as to introduce the Suzuki brand to other motorcyclists.

For more updates on the program follow the Suzuki Bikers FED fan page on Facebook at www.facebook.com/SuzukiBikersFed.

Nokia Sweden tells curious user that Instagram app for Windows Phone 8 is “on the way”

    0

In response to a comment from a curious user of a Lumia 920, Nokia Sweden claimed that an Instagram app for Windows Phone 8 is “on the way,” but at the same time, Nokia expressed that they could not give the exact date of release.

Nokia Sweden deleted its response soon after, probably because the app in question isn’t official yet or is a secret, but luckily, the folks at Windows Phone Central were able to get a screenshot of the comment exchange between Nokia and the concerned user.

    Translation via Google Translate

Marcus Pettersson: When will you release Instagram for Nokia Lumia 920?

Nokia Sweden: Instagram is on the way but can’t give an exact date yet.

As long as neither Microsoft nor Instagram announces the official availability of the app, we’re not going to assume anything, but we are hopeful that the app will soon make its way to the Windows Phone platform. Android and iOS users are most certainly enjoying the popular photo-editing and -sharing app, and we can see no reason why Windows Phone 8 users should be left out of the party. After all, the market for Windows Phone 8 devices is undeniably making its way up the charts, and so is the number of apps being made available for the platform at the Windows Store.

Dove’s viral vid hopes to make changes in how you see yourself

    0

Dove recently released a viral video called “Real Beauty Sketches” as part of their long-standing Real Beauty campaign.

In the video, a handful of women are told to sit in a room on the opposite side of a curtain that veils a sketch artist who attempts to draw the women without seeing their faces just by asking them some questions about how they think they look. The sketch artist is a former forensic artist who worked for the police department in San Jose, California. The artist then creates a second sketch of the person based on how another person describes one of the women.

I wouldn’t want to spoil the ending, so go ahead—hit play and enjoy!

Honda introduces City variants equipped with class-leading features

    0

Building off the success of the launch of the New Honda City last January, Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. is set to raise the bar in the subcompact segment of automobiles with the new City variants.

The third generation of Honda City subcompact automobiles was launched in 2009, and they were given urban upgrades in 2012, with a new chromed grill, redesigned bumpers, and new taillights to give a more elegant look while retaining its sporty features. The City was given new blue and white illumination in the instrument cluster and a chrome-accented center console. Another addition to the instrument cluster is the Eco Drive Indicator Lamp in the 1.5 variant, which lights up whenever the driver is driving efficiently, so that the driver is made aware of and given motivation to practice fuel efficient driving.

“We challenged ourselves once again to change the rules for the City in the Philippines by introducing 1.5 liter variants with first in class premium and safety features,” said Tatsuya Natsume, President and General Manager of Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. The new variants of the City are the 1.5 EL and the 1.5 ENC, both offered in automatic transmission with paddle shifters. More than the usual subcompact sedan, both variants will also be equipped with seven split-spoke 16-inch alloy wheels (the 1.3 S will have eight-spoke 15-inch alloy wheels), further enhancing the City’s sporty profile. The 1.5 EL will also have a new black leather interior.

A new standard of safety has also emerged with the 1.5 ENC variant, which were only available in higher displacement models. The Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) provides lateral skidding prevention and stabilized cornering, ISOFIX international standard for fastening child seats which can be found in the Honda Pilot and Odyssey, and 60:40 split folding rear seats and a seatbelt reminder for both the driver and front passenger. “These features make the City 1.5 ENC, one of the pioneers to introduce a model (in the Philippines) that gets a 5-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating for adult occupant protection, the highest safety rating possible,” Natsume said. The ASEAN New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) is a new addition to the NCAP entities around the world. The ASEAN NCAP seeks to enhance safety standards, raise consumer awareness and thus encourage a market for safer vehicles in the Southeast Asia region.

All variants of the Honda City are equipped with dual (driver and passenger) SRS airbags, an anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD). The ABS and EBD system prevents the wheels from locking during sudden braking so that the driver can control the car in unfavorable conditions.

The Honda City has four variants: the 1.3 S MT, the 1.3 S AT, the 1.5 EL AT, and the 1.5 ENC AT. The 1.3 S MT will retail for PHP 746,000; the 1.3 S AT for PHP 786,000; the 1.5 EL AT for PHP 861,000; and the 1.5 ENC AT for PHP 876,000. The City is also available in five colors: Sparkling Brown, Taffeta White, Urban Titanium, Crystal Black, and the brand new Carnelian Red. For more information, please visit www.hondaphil.com.

World’s first smartphone for the blind made in India

    0

Technology has allowed people to connect with one another effortlessly, and in addition, technology has also helped those cross boundaries of differences, whether it be a difference in social standing, race, or ability. India has created a smartphone for the blind in a testament to technology’s endless bounds.

“We have created the world’s first Braille smartphone. This product is based on an innovative ‘touch screen’ which is capable of elevating and depressing the contents it receives to transform them into ‘touchable’ patterns,” said its inventor, Sumit Dagar. The company is being incubated at the Center for Innovation Incubation and Entrepreneurship at the IIM Ahmadabad campus. “The response during the test has been immense. It comes out as a companion more than a phone to the user. We plan to do more advanced versions of the phone in the future.”

Dagar started the project three years ago while studying interaction designing at the National Institute of Design (NID). He was motivated to develop the device when he realized that so far, technology was only serving the mainstream and ignoring the marginalized, such as the poor and people with disabilities. After working with a couple of companies, he gave up his job to concentrate on his technology, formed a team of six people and started his venture, Kriyate Design Solutions. Currently, the venture is being funded by Rolex Awards under its Young Laureates Program, in which they select five people from across the world every two years and fund their projects.

Since the blind read using Braille, Dagar’s smartphone will use Shape Memory Alloy technology, based on the concept that metals remember their original shapes, i.e. expand and contract to its original shape after use. The phone’s ‘screen’ has a grid of pins which move up and down as per requirement. The grid also has a Braille display, where pins come up to represent a character or letter. The screen on Dagar’s smartphone will be capable of elevating and depressing the contents to form patterns in Braille as well. Aside from those differences, all other elements of Dagar’s smartphone will be like any other smartphone.

NVIDIA GTX 700 series to be announced at Computex 2013?

    0

NVIDIA has been steadily chugging along with their 600 series graphics cards for both the desktop and mobile markets—and rumor has it that they might introduce their new line of graphics cards, the GTX 700 series, at Computex 2013 in June. This puts the 700 series a bit ahead of schedule as they were rumored to appear at the 2014 edition of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES).

What we know so far is that the card(s) that might be announced at Computex 2013 will also use the same Kepler architecture that the 600 series uses, based on a 28 nm manufacturing process. It won’t represent a giant leap in technology, but rather one that keeps it ahead of their main competition over at AMD. The card(s) will possibly have an improved Kepler-based design with lower power consumption and higher clock speeds. We also know that NVIDIA does plan to move to a 20 nm manufacturing process with Maxwell-based architecture in the future (possibly as early as 2014) to accommodate the next generation of graphics.

No specs or release dates have been announced yet for the 700 series, but you can expect more information to be available between Computex 2013 and CES 2014.
