Epson celebrates 20th anniversary of Micro Piezo technology

    0
Mr. Toshimitsu Tanaka (President and Country Manager, Epson Philippines)
and Mr. Koichi Endo (Managing Director, Epson Southeast Asia) with the
1993 Epson Stylus 800, the first printer to use the Epson Micro Piezo
    inkjet print head

Micro Piezo is the high performance print head technology behind the entire Epson inkjet range. It uses piezoelectric materials that bend precisely when charged with varying electric currents to propel precise amounts of ink out of the print head. Today, Epson is the only major printer company in the world that uses this technology in their entire inkjet range, from the largest industrial printers, to their smallest personal photo printers.

One of the printers on display today was the first printer to use the Epson Micro Piezo inkjet, the Epson Stylus 800, which was released in 1993. Mr. Koichi Endo, the current Managing Director of Epson Southeast Asia, was one of the engineers who developed the technology, and was present at today’s luncheon, and presented the evolution of Epson’s printers through the years.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the technology, Epson launched a range of its genuine ink tank system printers that provide quality prints at lower costs per page. Mr. Toshimitsu Tanaka, Epson Philippines’ Country Manager has identified ink tank system printers as an area for growth in the future, due to the high demand in the market.

Currently, inkjet printers are still the core of Epson Philippines, which makes up for almost 50 percent of their business. This is followed by their dot matrix printer sales, and finally their projector business. Due to increasing demand, Tanaka-san has identified ink tank system printers as an area for future growth.

Google Glass Specs are out, still pretty awesome.

    0

While we live in a world where messages can be sent instantly from thousands of kilometers away, people are in space and planning to go to other planets and we have all the knowledge of the human race at our fingertips, you won’t really convince us that the future is here until we have wearable consumer technology that is more that a mobile phone strapped onto a watch strap. Google, always keen to bring the future to mankind at a rate greater than our usual 1 sec/sec, has cooked up Google Glass, which, if you haven’t heard, must mean you have been spending the past months in a jungle somewhere (HERE is a quick primer for the five of you who have no idea what it is.)

Google has just released the specs for the device, for those who are interested in being either a Uni Sol or Saiyan. The specs look good, and the device is as desirable as ever, particularly with the bone conduction transducer that will be in charge of audio for Glass. They report that the image seen in Glass looks like a 25-inch HD screen viewed from eight feet away; not exactly a home theatre, but for a lot of tasks, it should do just fine. It has a battery that is rated to last “one full day of typical use.” They are probably being purposely vague here, as there is no mention of the capacity or rating of the battery, but at least they are ticking to the industry-standard Micro USB port, though they suggest users stick with the included one for “long and prosperous Glass use.”

It’s a pretty interesting little thing on paper, but only time will tell if there is more to it than marketing and nerd hype. That being said, I still want one.

Check out the specs at Google’s official page HERE.

Sony-backed Internet service provider launching 2 Gbps Internet in Japan

For those wanting a lightning-fast Internet connection, many people are waiting for when Google Fiber will hit their homes—but Japan has started rolling out a 2 Gbps Internet service in response to Google Fiber. So-net Entertainment, a Sony-backed ISP, has started rolling out its “Nuro” fiber-based service on Monday to homes, apartments, and small businesses in Tokyo and six surrounding prefectures. Nuro will cost 4,980 yen (US$51) per month on a two-year contract, plus a 52,500 yen (US$538) installation fee that it is currently offering for free for those who apply online. The upload speed is 1 Gbps, which, in the most ideal conditions, will make practically anything that you download from or upload to the Internet nearly instant.

“The service includes rental of an optical network unit (ONU) designed to handle the high speeds,” the company said. “Our service uses the Gigabit-capable Passive Optics Networks (GPON) standard, which supports up to 2.488 Gbps downstream.” ONU devices are commonly used in homes and businesses to convert fiber to broadband Internet. Individual users of the service are unlikely to see 2 Gbps speeds on their devices, as it exceeds the capacity of most consumer network adapters. However, it is implied that business users will probably be able to make full use of this technology.

Currently, 25 percent of Japanese Internet subscribers are connected via fiber, which is the second highest rate in the world, but still far behind the United Arab Emirates, where 70 percent of their Internet subscribers are connected via fiber. 1 Gbps Internet speeds are actually quite common in Japan, with providers slashing prices and offering discounts to get more Internet subscribers on board.

    Sh*t Android users say. (Humor)

    0

In the interest of full disclosure, I would like to say I am a huge fan of the Android OS. Still, there are some things about it that rub me the wrong way, not the least of which are some Android users. Much like religion and politics, I believe OS preference should be kept private, and left out of polite conversation. Still, quite a few things in this video made me laugh audibly, which is a lot to say for a deadline Tuesday such as this. If you need a little pick-me-up, give this video by MobilePhoneFinder a view HERE.

Lenovo and MTV have recently announced the launch of the Lenovo-MTV CO:LAB, a social platform wherein progressive, creative and talented Pinoys can share stories of their communities through music. The project gives talented individuals 18 and above a place to share the sights and sounds of their cities through a creaive music video with the theme “pulse of the World,” and aims to foster an air of collaboration and sharing across different industries such as filmmaking, instrumentalists and DJs through the common threads of talent and technology.

Participants will be competing across categories and countries, as the Lenovo-MTV CO:LAB has also been launched simultaneously in Japan, Singapore, India, Malaysia and Thailand. DJs, motion graphic artists, film makers, and vocalists/instrumentalists will be judged based on how they effectively utilize their “Do Machines” to convey the story of their city in original, inspirational, and creative sound and video clips. Shortlisted candidates who make it to the top 10 in their respective categories will then proceed to the next round, where the public will be voting for the local winners.

Local influencers and mentors across the different areas will select the final ensemble which will create the “Pulse of the World” music video, with the winning group taking home the privilege of being mentored by renowned DJs Brendon Perera and Matty Wainright, and recognition as Lenovo’s brand ambassadors. The final music video will also be shown during the 2013 MTV Worldstage concert; MTV’s signature event.

“Lenovo-MTV CO:LAB aims to inspire Millennials to take action and turn their dreams to reality. Both Lenovo and MTV are innovative companies, with dynamic brand personalities, that are focused on the Millennial generation who don’t just dream about achieving, but go out there and do. We chose to collaborate with MTV because it is the iconic destination for global Millennials and represents the sweet spot for music and entertainment for Millennials,” said Vicky Agorrilla, Country General Manager, Lenovo Philippines.

A panel of mentors, who are experts in their fields, will be guiding the Millennials throughout the 4 months of the campaign. In the Philippines, Lenovo tapped two unique and talented individuals, DJ Nina Saputil and director Enzo Valdez, to become Lenovo-MTV CO:LAB mentors and provide guidance for the country and regional winning Millennials.

CO:LAB will be accepting entries for each of the four categories: DJ, vocalist/ instrumentalist, film making, motion graphics until April 21, 2013. The public will have the chance to vote from the top ten entries until May 12, 2013 to select local winners for each category. Mentors and influencers will decide on the regional winners who will be attending the workshop and creating the “Pulse of the World” music video. The winners’ “Pulse of the World” music video and profiles will be aired from July 8, 2013 to August 25, 2013.

    Google translate, now available offline!

    0

In this world of low-priced airfare and international travel, language is something that can be a huge stumbling block. While it’s a great thing to pick up and learn another language, there isn’t always time to clock in the extra hours to be fluent in a language before the plane leaves the runway. Google Translate has always been a handy tool for getting the point across the distant chasm that is language, but when you’re overseas, there isn’t always a reliable internet connection on which to run the web-based application.

Google now has a solution for that. Google has launched offline packages for Google Translate for Android, with support for fifty languages, making sure you have exactly the right thing to say, no matter where you might find yourself. You can select [Offline Languages] in the app menu to see all the offline language packages available for download. To enable offline translation between any two languages, you just need to select them in the offline languages menu. Once the packages are downloaded, you are all set.

Bear in mind that the offline service isn’t as comprehensive as their full, online counterparts, but for the simpler things, they should do just fine, and are far better than thumbing through a foreign travel book to get your point across, particularly when there is a lack of internet access. Check it out HERE.

The #music page: Hinting at the rumored Twitter music app?

    1

It seems that the rumors might be true–Twitter may actually be launching its own music service. The image above is what you will see on your browser when you visit the URL music.twitter.com. Upon clicking the “Sign In” button, a small browser window with an authorization request for a service called “Trending Music Web” pops up.

The Verge reports that it isn’t the first time “Trending Music Web” turned up on Twitter. According to the website, the founder of We Are Hunted—the music recommendation service that Twitter has acquired—Stephen Phillips, has been tweeting songs from the said app.

Another tech news portal, All Things Digital, reports that the upcoming app will be able to suggest artists and tracks to Twitter users based on the accounts they follow and other “personalized signals.” The site claims that the app will allow users to listen to music while directly inside it using third-party services like iTunes and Soundcloud, and that it will also allow them to watch music videos provided by Vevo.

All Things Digital also says that another source told them that Twitter will be launching the service during Coachella Festival, one of the well-known and most-awaited annual music and arts festivals in the U.S., which will take place this weekend.

Excited to know more about Twitter’s #music page? We know we are, and if you’re stoked, too, keep checking up on our page in the next few days.

Intel Developer Forum announces new solutions for business and consumer markets

    1

The 2013 Intel Developer Forum is taking place in Beijing, China, where company executives announced new technologies and partnerships that will transform the technology experience from the device to the cloud. The announcements included details on new data center product lines based on the 22 nm process technology and the new Intel rack scale architecture, as well as the upcoming 4th generation Intel Core processor family.

Diane Bryant, Intel senior vice president and general manager of the Datacenter and Connected Systems Group, said that the data center was important in enabling personal computing systems to deliver real-time information and services. She also outlined the steps that Intel is taking to provide both the hardware and the software needed for data analytics to improve the capabilities of intelligent devices as well as data center infrastructure. “People are increasingly demanding more from their devices through applications and services whether at home, at work or wherever they may be,” Bryant said. “Intel is delivering a powerful portfolio of hardware and software computing technologies from the device to the data center that can improve experiences and enable new services.”

Bryant also outlined the plans to accelerate the expansion of Intel’s offerings in the data center processor product lines, which are also based on the 22 nm manufacturing technology before the end of the year. These offerings will help cut costs and raise the efficiency of data centers. One of these offerings is the Intel Atom S12x9, which will follow the Intel Atom S1200 processor for microservers. Intel will also bring two more Intel Atom processors to market which will improve performance per watt, deliver new architectures and have an expanded feature set by the end of this year.

Intel also demonstrated for the first time the next-generation Intel Atom processor family for microservers (Avoton). Intel is shipping samples to customers for evaluation. Avoton will have an integrated Ethernet controller and is also expected to deliver industry-leading energy efficiency and performance-per-watt for microservers and scale out workloads, allowing microservers and data centers to operate more efficiently than before.

Kirk Skaugen, Intel senior vice president and general manager of the PC Client Group, touched more on the 4th generation Intel Core processor family, which will launch later this quarter. “Ultrabooks based on the 4th generation Intel Core processor family will enable exciting, new computing experiences and all-day battery life delivering the most significant battery life capability improvement in Intel’s history,” said Skaugen. “It will also bring to consumers a new wave of ‘two-for-one’ convertible and detachable systems that combine the best of a full PC experience with the best of a tablet in amazing new form factors.”

The new Intel Core microarchitecture will allow the company to deliver up to double the graphics performance over the previous generation. The new graphics solution will also have high levels of integration to enable new form factors and designs with excellent built-in visual quality. Skaugen demonstrated these graphics improvements on the 4th generation Intel Core processor-based ultrabook reference design (Harris Beach). The demo featured popular game Dirt 3 and showed the same visual experience and gameplay as a discrete graphics card that would otherwise have to be added separately. He also featured the 4th generation Intel Core processor-based concept (Niagara), a premium notebook with the ability to play another graphics intensive game, Grid 2, without a discrete graphics card.

Along with touch capability, Intel Wireless Display (WiDi) will be enabled on all 4th generation Intel Core processor-based ultrabooks to allow people to quickly and securely stream content and apps from devices to the big screen without using cables. “The China ecosystem is taking the lead on integrating Intel WiDi into systems,” Skaugen said. He also announced that the leading television manufacturer in China, TCL, has a new model with the Intel WiDi technology built in. Skaugen announced new receivers certified for Intel WiDi from QVOD and Lenovo and a set-top box from Gehua. Skaugen also announced new market variants of the 22 nm (Bay Trail) system-on-a-chip (SoC) designed for convertible devices, laptops, desktops, and all-in-one computers.

Tan Weng Kuan, vice president and general manager of the Mobile Communications Group, Intel China, announced how the company will work with ecosystem partners to bring Intel processors to smartphones and tablets. Tan talked about the new Intel Atom Z2580 processor (Clover Trail+) for smartphones and the Intel Atom Z2760 processor (Clover Trail) for tablets. Intel processors will support multiple mobile operating systems, including Windows 8 and Android. Intel also announced that their quad-core Atom SoC (Bay Trail) will be their most powerful Atom processor, and will have double the computing power of the current-generation tablet offering, along with all-day battery life and weeks of standby power. Bay Trail will be released in holiday of 2013. Tan also announced another SoC (Merrifield) which will ship at the end of this year and deliver increased smartphone performance, power efficiency and battery life. Tan also called on Chinese developers to help advance the mobile market, and announced a China-specific expansion of the company’s platform and ecosystem enabling efforts, particularly focusing on the Atom processor-based tablets running Android.

EA wins Worst Company in America award two years in a row

After failing to hit their sales targets and ultimately losing their CEO as a result, Electronic Arts (EA) received even more bad news: they were named the Worst Company in America for a second consecutive year, an award given by consumer affairs blog The Consumerist. EA once again beat out Bank of America, with 78 percent of those polled saying that EA, one of the world’s biggest game publishers, was more hated than the notorious financial institution that was cited for poor customer service and also had the distinction of being sued by the United States federal government.

Upon “winning” the award, an EA representative said, “We can do better. We will do better.” This echoed chief operating officer (COO) Peter Moore’s recent statement regarding criticisms of the company. “I am damn proud of this company, the people around the globe who work at EA, the games we create and the people that play them,” Moore said. However, complaints about some of EA’s biggest releases, such as SimCity, and its digital rights management (DRM) implementation were factors that led to EA being chosen once again for the award.

“There is no real vision at work, no grand design. Just the idea that free-to-play games and microtransactions are the wave of the future, or at least they better be, because none of the company’s $60 boxed releases are finding much success with either critics or gamers,” said Penny Arcade’s Ben Kuchera. Another factor that led to EA’s “win” was poor customer service. According to The Consumerist, “The customer had a simple question about linking an Origin account to his Xbox gamer tag, but the EA rep could only tell the customer that nothing could be done over chat and that he would need to call a customer support number to discuss the problem. Making matters worse, though the customer was in Europe, the EA rep provided him with a phone number for EA’s U.S. support office.”

Kuchera also talked about EA’s business practices as another factor in their “win.” “Until EA stops sucking the blood out of games in order to make uninspiring sequels, or at least until they begin caring about how much gamers hate their lack of respect for our money and intelligence, this is going to continue,” Kuchera also said. “We hate them because they destroy companies we love. We hate them because they release poor games. We hate them because they claim our hate doesn’t matter as long as we give them our money.”

The Consumerist has given out the Worst Company in America award since 2006. Some of the past winners included oil companies such as British Petroleum (BP) and Halliburton, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), a trade organization made up of record labels and music distributors, and American ISP Comcast. EA also has the distinction of being the first repeat winner of the award.
