The Association of Vehicle Importers and Distributors, and DoST hold Innovation Congress

The association of Vehicle Importers and Distributors (AVID) in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology (DoST) held the Idea Congress (iCON) at the iCON tent at the Bonifacio Global City in Taguig last April 5 and 6. The iCON was created to serve as a platform for an exchange of ideas between respected Filipino thought leaders, and become a venue for leaps in design and innovation that will allow the country to become even more competitive in the globalized market of today. AVID, known for its yearly Thought Leadership Forums, which fosters open dialogue and the sharing of ideas between well-known automotive manufacturers, government leaders, private business and the academe, was the perfect partner for the iCON.

“AVID member companies take pride in the innovation philosophies of the top world brands that we represent. Innovation has driven us to become formidable players in the automotive industry. This is why we laud and commit to support the National Innovation Strategy of the DOST,” affirmed AVID President Ms. Ma. Fe Perez-Agudo. “We have a shared vision and commitment to foster and intensify a mindset for innovation … that will bring this country further up global competitiveness indexes, and so be recognized … as a worthy player in the global business arena. This MOA signing is just the start of a continuing partnership between AVID and DOST to jointly work towards keeping great innovative projects alive and ensure that their full value is realized.”

The event also played host to some of the latest vehicles from a number of automotive industry leaders, including Chervrolet, Volvo Mercedes-Benz, Mini, Jeepand Hyundai.

At this year’s AVID iCON was head of Hyundai’s design team, Casey Hyun, the visionary design head of the team that developed, refined and implemented the Fluidic Sculpture design philosophy– the concept that has given the brand an identity that sets it apart at a glance. Mr Hyun gave a talk that centered around smart mobility in smart cities at the forum proper on the 5th, and an “Innovation Speak” where he interacted with design students on the 6th, where he shared insights on design, in particular, the Hyundai design innovation, as well as his own journey as a designer.

Casey Hyun, giving a design talk at the iSpeak event during the iCON

“Manila is the place where I started my love for cars, ” Says Mr. Hyun, who spent part of his childhood in the Philippines in the 1980s. As early as then, he remembers sitting and sketching cars he would see on the road, not realizing there was such a profession as “automotive designer.” Born in South Korea, he grew up and studied Industrial Design at the University of Technology in Sydney Australia, and moved to Japan to work as a wireless communication product designer. He eventually found his way into the automotive design industry by taking a post-graduate course in Automotive Design at the University of Coventry in the UK, then moving on to work for several automotive firms, before moving to Hyundai in 2005.

Customer perception: Globe is better than the other network

If you are in the Philippines and have been anywhere near a radio, TV or broadsheet, you must be familiar with the ad campaign aimed against Globe telecom. The rival network has been targeting Globe with its own ads declaring itself the “Better network.” A brand health survey conducted by independent research firm Nielsen has shown that consumer perception of the Globe brand is contrary to this claim.

Among the questions asked were hinged on brand perception, which included “the brand that is a leader in 4G,” “the brand that has the biggest 4G network,” “the brand that was first to offer 4G,” “fast internet downloading using my cellphone,” and “fast internet uploading using my cellphone.”  The result of the randomly-sampled, face-to-face survey was clear: Globe was perceived to be better with its 4G offerings, and at the very least at par with regard to calls, SMS transmission, signal quality and  load sending and receiving.

“The study validates that a substantial number of consumers actually say that the Globe network is performing well, if not superior, compared to its rivals, even while the test was conducted during the initial rollout of our network modernization program. Unsubstantiated claims often mislead the public, and offers no true benefit either to consumers or to the industry,” said Yoly Crisanto, Head of Globe Corporate Communications.

“It is outright preposterous to claim being the “better network” when consumers feel and experience that this is not so. More importantly, these claims failed to dent perception when it comes to 4G superiority, despite hyped up promotions and negative publicity directed at us,” she stated.

Globe is an active member of the Philippine Association of National Advertisers and is represented in the current Board of Directors. It adheres to the policy of self-regulation and the principles of truth in advertising. As a Company which puts premium on integrity and customer centricity, Globe ensures that its products and services deliver on claims in any advertising or publicity material.

Nokia Lumia 920 crushed by 24 ton truck, still works

Smartphone durability is something that’s been increasingly addressed in the past few years. Before, several drops could possibly render a smartphone useless because the screen might crack. But Nokia took the smartphone durability test to the extreme and had a 24 ton (around 48,000 lbs/21,768.7 kg) heavy-duty truck run over the Nokia Lumia 920. Surprisingly (even for Nokia, which is known for its durability), the Lumia 920 passed the test despite a shattered screen. The unit was still able to make and receive calls. Here is the Lumia 920 after the test:

Other smartphones would probably not even still be in one piece, but the Lumia 920 managed to stay that way (even though its screen didn’t). It’s obvious that Nokia Care won’t be repairing the phone, but the owner of the device, Ossi Pyykkönen, was so impressed by the ruggedness of the phone that he plans on buying a new one to replace the smashed model, so we can also guess that he will also be giving much of his future smartphone business to Nokia as well.

Apertura: Jinri Park in The Snapshots Issue

You’ve seen her face in magazines and on bookshelves, and you’ve come across her on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and elsewhere on the World Wide Web. If there is anyone who has the camera to thank for an opening into cult fame, it’s Jinri Park.

Not only has she dominated websites and magazines with photographs of her foxy physique; she has recently become a TV personality as well. Google her name, and you’ll find steamy selfies and videos of Jinri talking, singing, dancing, and even doing nothing. It seems that in nearly everything she does, Jinri is in front of the lens—be it someone else’s camera or her own.

The eyes of the public are on Jinri—this is true especially among the male population of the audience. People never seem to get tired of gazing at her. From a voyeur’s perspective, her alluring figure and radiant face are undoubtedly part of the equation, but whatever the reason may be, there is definitely something about Jinri that pulls in the viewer’s eye.

Peek through the lens and see for yourself how Jinri can pull you into the page as she ushers you into her boudoir in Gadgets Magazine’s April 2013 release, The Snapshots Issue.

    What is Facebook Home?

Last week, the Facebook crew rounded up everyone to unveil what they hailed as their “new home on Android.” Initially, people were led to believe that Team Zuckerberg was about to launch the alleged Facebook Phone. However, instead of announcing their own smartphone, the team revealed Facebook Home.

Facebook Home is a new home screen and app launcher interface for Android smartphones. It will be available on April 12 on Google Play, and will work on the HTC One, the HTC One X, the Samsung Galaxy S III, the Samsung Galaxy Note II and the Samsung Galaxy S 4.

Together with Facebook Home, the company also launched the HTC First. It is the first smartphone to have Facebook Home built into it and is exclusive to AT&T users in the US.

Here are the key features of Facebook Home:

    Cover Feed

When you switch on your phone, your lock screen and home screen are replaced by the Cover Feed—a stream containing the status updates, photos and links posted by your friends. By side-scrolling, you’ll be able to flip through the stream, and you can also like content simply by double-tapping the screen.

    http://youtu.be/HKyO0hJEp-g

    Notifications

Each time there’s something going on in your Facebook account, notifications will appear on the home screen. You can view these updates by clicking on the notifications. You can also move them to any part of the screen or you can flick them away from the view if you’re not really in the mood to check them out. On the HTC First, all notifications for apps on the home screen will go through Facebook Home, while for other Android users who simply download the app on their devices will only receive notifications from Facebook.

    App Launcher

At the bottom of the lock/home screen of your phone (the Cover Feed), you’ll see a circular avatar with your profile photo on it. You can swipe it upward to reveal the app launcher, which gives you easy access to all your apps and lets you group together the ones you frequently use.

    Chat Heads

When someone sends you a message via SMS or via Facebook Messenger, an avatar with the user’s profile photo will appear onscreen, no matter what app you’re in. You can respond to the message by tapping on the avatar. Users will be able to answer messages directly without leaving the app that’s currently running. You can also move the avatars around the screen or flick them away.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 finally hits our shores

Samsung’s amazing Galaxy Note 8, easily the handiest, most useful tablet we have seen in a while, has officially been launched in the Philippines. We’ve mentioned the Galaxy Note 8 before, and the launch just reinforced what we believed the first time we got to try the device. It’s a great media-consumption tablet that has amazing content-creation abilities thanks to the included S-Pen.

Also introduced at the event was Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8 endorser, the lovely Bianca Gonzales. Writers like Bianca will enjoy the improved S Pen and S Note features that allow users to pick up the pen and write, annotate or highlight to their hearts’ content, and share it quickly and easily once they are done. The S Pen is designed to bring out the creative side in people and maintain the feel of writing with a pen on an actual piece of paper. With the S Pen, Bianca can write memos, crop and embellish photos, browse the Internet and even create diary entries. The S Pen now also allows the user to hover over certain items to reveal more menu and preview options thanks to the device’s Air View technology. Finding just the right frame in a video, previewing articles in your news aggregator and checking emails without opening each one individually makes day-to-day tasks less tedious.

The device also intelligently calibrates itself to provide optimum conditions for prolonged reading through the built-in reading mode. in this mode, eye strain is greatly reduced as the tablet automatically adjusts brightness, color temperature and contrast ratio, depending on ambient light. The Galaxy Note 8 is also able to detect the position of the reader’s eyes in order to keep the screen live while it is being watched, making your reading experience as close to reading on an actual page as possible.

On top of all these features, the Galaxy Note 8 is also a full-featured phone that allows the user to make and receive calls, texts, browse the Internet and connect with people through a whole store full of connectivity apps made available by Google. It’s all pretty amazing for a single device.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 hits Samsung stores on the 13th of this month, and as a special treat, Samsung is giving out exciting deals for new owners of this device. A special first-day selling event will take place at the SM Mall of Asia Atrium where every buyer of the Note 8.0 will get a free Samsung Book Cover worth PHP 1,699. On top of that, those who line up from 10AM to 12NN will also get a free Samsung Phone via a raffle draw for every purchase of a Samsung Galaxy Note 8. Up for grabs are the Samsung Galaxy SIII, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy SIII  Mini, Galaxy Grand, Galaxy S Duos, Galaxy Y Reloaded and E1200

Instagram announces that nearly half of its users are on Android

Instagram launched its Android app in 2012 and now, a year later, they announced in a blog post that half of the app’s total number of monthly active users come from Android.

Philip McAllister, an engineer at Instagram, posts, “Instagram for Android has helped make this community more global than ever. Major events such as Brazil’s Círio de Nazaré festival, the 85th birthday of Thailand’s King Bhumibol, and a streak of severe thunderstorms throughout Malaysia have been captured by Android Instagrammers and shared to global audiences like never before.”

“We’re working hard to make the app fast and easy to use, and we’re dedicated to always bringing you the best Instagram experience possible. So to all of our Instagrammers on Android, thank you for helping to make this community amazing. We’re glad you’re here,” he adds.

It was reported earlier this year that Instagram now has more than 100 million monthly active users.

Electronic Arts introduces Nissan in-game ad for SimCity

We’re bombarded by ads every single day—hundreds upon thousands of them saying to buy the latest products. Some people want to get away from those ads, especially when they use tech products, so they install AdBlocker extensions on their preferred web browsers. However, ads have also made their way into your games as well. Electronic Arts (EA) has announced that a Nissan LEAF charging station—essentially a Nissan ad—will be introduced as a building in their city-building simulator game, SimCity.

In-game advertising isn’t a new concept—it’s been in games since at least the early 1990s. The game James Pond 2 had a built-in advertisement for Penguin brand biscuits back in 1991. In-game advertising has also been in well known games such as EverQuest II, where you could order pizza from Pizza Hut in-game at one point. Burnout: Paradise had in-game ads for then-United States presidential candidate Barack Obama in 2008. In fact, in-game advertising is very common in sports games, which regularly feature sideline ads for athletic wear makers such as Nike and Adidas.

However, EA’s “advertisement” actually has some use in the game and can help the player while they are building their ideal city—whether it’s a small town or an overcrowded metropolis. According to EA, “Plopping down the Nissan LEAF Charging Station will add happiness to nearby buildings. Adding the Charging Station will not take power, water or workers away from your city. Zoom in to the streets of cities and players will start seeing a percentage of their Sims from all wealth classes driving the electric vehicles. The Charging Station produces no garbage or sewage as well making it pollution free.” Part of almost every SimCity game in the series has the player managing pollution, power, water, unemployment, and other real-world factors that an actual city mayor has to deal with. It’s also free—all you need to do is click the ad on the launcher and you can use it in game. You can also access it via the Origin store or through the in-game billboard.
