HTC’s 10-inch Quattro tablet leaked, will be powered by Tegra 3

    0

Seems like HTC’s HQ is leakier than a sieve, as another product has supposedly been leaked. Meet the HTC Quattro, the Taiwanese firm’s next tablet device that’s rumored to be powered by NVIDIA’s recently detailed Tegra 3 quad-core processor. This 10-inch tablet has a display resolution of 1280 x 768, and will carry about 1GB of RAM on board. The Quattro is also rumored to ship with Beats in it, similar to the Sensation XE and XL that was recently launched in the Philippines. We gather that HTC would release a Wi-Fi only and a 3G enabled device when it does finally ship, and maybe a sprinkling of that ICS magic too.

    Samsung Galaxy Note hands-on

    3

Alright so we finally got Samsung’s newest baby, the Galaxy Note in our office today. The Galaxy Note is a bit different from Samsung’s other mobile offerings, as it’s possibly the biggest smartphone they’ve ever made, with a screen size of 5.3-inches. The Note isn’t traversing unusual territory – Dell’s 5-inch streak has already been through the whole is it a tablet/smartphone dilemma with disappointing results, and it’d be interesting to see how the Note navigates the same hybrid waters as Dell’s offering.

If it wasn’t obvious already, the Galaxy Note is huge. With dimensions of 146.9 x 83 x 9.7 mm, people with small hands need not apply. The Note’s screen is a 5.3-inch super AMOLED affair, and it’s absolutely gorgeous. The colors just pop, and it’s perfectly capable of displaying black portions of pictures as, you know…black, unlike typical LED or LCD screens that look grey-ish. And even though the Note is a bit on the large side, it’s still comfortably thin, coming in at only 9.7 mm.

External controls are a bit on the thin side too – you get the volume rocker on the left, power/unlock button on the right and home button near the bottom. Two more capacitive buttons show up on flank the home button when you touch the screen. The omission of a camera button sends a subtle message – the device isn’t primarily for pictures, though it still has a 8-metapixel camera at the back and a front facing camera for video calls.

Staying true to its name, the Note also features a pen near the bottom that you can take out if you want to draw, write notes or whatnot, and we gather that you’ll be able to use it to compose text messages and the like.

Powering the whole show is a dual-core 1.4GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor with a Mali-400MP GPU, which means that you won’t have to worry about the device slowing down once you get down and dirty with games and other apps. The Note is powered by Android 2.3, but we won’t be surprised if it gets ICS once the code is made available to the device.

We’ve also included comparison photos with the relatively smaller 4.3-inch HTC Sensation XE. We’ll be getting our review up as soon as we can. If you can’t wait to get this baby in your hands, you can hit up Samsung’s preorder page here.

Samsung Galaxy S II getting ICS update

Some unsurprising news came out of Samsung’s UK Twitter feed recently – it seems that Galaxy S II owners will be getting a bite out of Google’s delicious Android Ice Cream Sandwich update once the code is ready. The Verge reports that this apparently only applies to UK customers, but it stands to reason that if the folks across the pond get their ICS, we’d be next in line to get it too, right Samsung? No word on when the update will come, but it seems more than likely that it’ll land sometime next year. Meanwhile, there’s still no word if Nexus S owners will get the same courtesy, but if you’re left out of the ICS party, you can always root the thing if you’re a big enough gadget nerd.

Live-X brings serious sound to the stage

    0

Electro-Voice officially launched its Live-X loudspeakers in the Philippines, which promises to bring “serious sound” and “serious gear” to the stage. We got a chance to hear these bad boys in action last night, and they definitely pack a punch.

The Live X series has 3 powered two-way loudspeakers, consisting of 12-inch (ELX112P) and 15-inch (ELX125P) models. Both are equipped with brain-rattling 1000W class D amps and come encased in rugged wood cabinets. They can be stacked on top of each other, or they can be linked with a pole mount to its 18-inch ELX180P subwoofer sibling, which exerts a 700W amplifier and a rumbling frequency response of 32Hz-130Hz.

Aside from their powered speakers, Live X also has a passive line, consisting of 4 models that are also constructed with solid wood cabinets that remain cool even without fans. Just like its powered cousins, they can be paired and stacked with its acoustically matched 18-inch passive sub, which showcases 400W (continuous) and 1600W (peak power) handling.

The passive lineup consists of similar 12-inch (ELX112) and 15-inch (ELX115) two-way loudspeakers like its powered siblings, with the same frequency response of 50Hz-20kHz, and 44Hz-20kHz respectively.

The most interesting member of the passive line (pictured below) is the impressive ELX215, which features dual 15-inch woofers and a 1.5-inch high-frequency titanium compression driver. It delivers more punch in low end, with a frequency range of 38Hz-20kHz, and showcases 600W continuous and 2400W peak power handling.

Ater several demos of the Live-X with recorded songs, we were pretty amazed not just at its raw power, but with its clarity. To cap off the night, local band True Faith performed on stage, giving us the chance to witness first-hand the punch and power of the Live-X in a live application.

Nokia France head honcho says company is shipping Windows 8 tablet come June 2012

Seems like Nokia’s getting into the tablet market as early as the middle of next year-  the Verve has reported that Nokia France chief Paul Amsellem has been quoted saying that the company will have a Windows 8 tablet coming in June of 2012. That particular tidbit of information came by way of an interview with Les Echos newspaper. This bit of news has actually got us pretty excited, and to be honest, if we see the same type of work that the company did on their N9 (dead OS notwithstanding) then we wager that people would be flocking to buy the device. A Nokia spokesman has replied to the Verge that “we have not announced any specific plans as it relates to tablets,” but you know, they actually did.

HP’s ultrabook exposed: DM3 Folio ultrabook, 13.3 inches, comes in Core i3 and i5 flavors

    1

Seems like you won’t be spoilt of choice when you decide to grab an ultrabook, as HP has jumped in with their own offering, the HP Folio (DM3). This anorexic little number will be sporting a 13.3-inch screen and will come in two Intel flavors – a low voltage Core i3 running at 1.4 GHz and a Core i5 running at 1.6 GHz that can be turbo-boosted up to 2.3 GHz. Both variants will be more or less identical with each other, and will both sport 4GB of RAM (which is rumored to be expandable up to 8GB) with 128 GB solid state drives for storage. The overall aesthetic of the Folio is more or less typical HP, unlike the flashier UX line of ASUS. The Folio also has a backlit keyboard – something that other ultrabooks don’t have. The whole thing is just 18mm thick and weighs about 1.5 kilos, which means that the Folio is the ideal device for budding road warriors out there. You can go the this link to see more pictures of the device and a detailed hands-on.

Intel Sandybridge Extreme goes official, Quad memory support, up to 15MB of L3 cache

We’ve been quivering to talk about it ever since we signed our NDA with hardware vendor ASUS, but the anointed time has finally come. Intel has officially announced its two new processors: the Intel Core i7-3960X processor Extreme Edition and the Intel Core i7-3930K processor, the first six-core client processors in the second-generation “Sandy Bridge” Intel Core processor family. The Intel Core i7-3960X and the Intel Core i7-3930K are fully unlocked, which means overclockers can go wild with these processors as they see fit. The new CPUs run at base speeds of 3.3 and 3.2 GHz with 15MB and 12MB of L3 cache respectively, and will go on Intel’s X79 Express chipset that supports this new LGA 2011 socket platform. So aside from the blazingly fast speeds, what else do you get? Well, you’ll be getting 6Gb/s Serial ATA (SATA) ports and additional PCIe 2.0 lanes, as well as quad-channel memory support. Performance doesn’t come cheap, and although we don’t have local prices for these things yet, we’ve seen them going for $1,050 and $600 respectively at newegg.com. Ouch. We’ll tell you what we think as soon as we get the units in.
