    GTA V trailer unveiled

The trailer for GTA V is officially out, and the preview looks quite stunning, and may prove to be Rockstar Games’ greatest venture to date.

Just like we reported last week, GTA V is set in a real-world model of “Los Angeles” (with real names to be substituted once again) and may feature multiple protagonists, confirming the wave of rumors and leaks that have been crawling all over the web.

Watching the trailer subtly reveals the game’s narrative, which rests on the premise of the protagonist(s) moving to “LA” and seeking a “better” life, etc. GTA V promises the original gameplay and plot development that we have all grown to love – revolving around money, power, and all those things your mama told you not to mess with. The graphics looks stunning thus far, which appears to be a vast improvement over GTA’s previous installments.

There is no confirmation on characters just yet, although several leaks mention that GTA V may include a “Welsh monk/cult leader/yoga teacher” and “an ugly but comfortable mellow Californian divorcee” just to name a few. Rockstar has further hinted at an all-star voice cast, which may include Robert De Niro.

    It’s about time.

NEO is giving discounts for turning in your old and defective notebooks

Are you looking for a replacement for your busted lappie? Well, you’ll be happy to know that NEO is conducting a trade-in promotion for old and defective notebooks in exchange for massive discounts off the price of a brand new,  Neo B5702 (which incidentally we reviewed here). How deep of a discount are you looking at? Well, if you trade-in an old NEO notebook, you’re looking at a price drop of Php 10,000 off of the B5702’s sticker price of Php 34,999, meaning you’ll be able to take it home for Php 24,999. If you’re trading in a non-NEO brand, you’ll still be able to score a Php 2,000 discount off of the retail price, dropping the price down to Php 26,999.

There are some caveats though, chief of which is that the trade-in promo is on a one-unit-per-trade-in basis. It means you cannot trade in more than one old laptop to get more than the discounts offered. Only one old laptop will be accepted for every purchase of one unit of B5702. If you want to trade in another old unit, you will have to use it for another purchase of B5702.

The promotion will run from November 4-7, 2011, at the following NEO showrooms:

    • SM Megamall, Tel. No. 02-683-0861
    • SM North EDSA, Tel. No. 02-210-0889
    • SM Cebu, Tel. No. 032-236-4157
    • NCCC Mall, Davao City, Tel. No. 082-297-1201

Google is now indexing Facebook comments, your embarrassing tirade will now be preserved till the end of time

    via Digital Inspiration

We knew it would only be a matter of time before the search giant found a way to start indexing Facebook comments, and lo and behold, that time is now. Digital Inspiration reports that Google is now able to read and index Facebook comments like the one used by several sites, something that they weren’t able to do before. This now means people can now search Google for all the comments you might made using the Facebook comments platform. To be clear, Google is only able to search and index sites using the Facebook comments platform, and not Facebook itself (yet).

    via Digital Inspiration

What does this mean for you? Absolutely nothing, if you’re a normal human being and haven’t said anything utterly stupid and retarded on any website ever that uses the Facebook commenting system. If you did say something stupid (for example saying something idiotic like Hitler did the right thing or that 9/11 was an inside job) your comments can now be searched for and referenced by almost anyone, including future employers, spouses, potential frenemies and whoever has an internet connection and knows how to Google.

Rampage IV Extreme: hardcore board for hardcore users

The Rampage IV Extreme represents the first ROG product for Intel’s upcoming X79 chipset, and with it, ASUS’ commitment to hardcore enthusiasts. This isn’t just a great board to have if you’re a gamer or an overclocker – it’s THE board you want if you’re either.

First off is the cooler. First thing that most people do when they upgrade to a new socket is junk or sell their old cooler or CPU fan because more than likely it’s going to be incompatible with your new stuff. The Rampage IV Extreme comes with an X-socket, which basically is an adapter that allows you to use your old LGA1366 cooler with the Rampage IV Extreme.

When we said this board is for hardcore users, we weren’t kidding. The board has eight voltage check points along the edge of the motherboard to help you when you tweak and overclock it, and there’s even a switch called LN2 mode that preps the board for liquid nitrogen cooling – something that most hardcore users will appreciate. Speaking of really cool things, the Rampage IV Extreme also has a feature called subzero sense – it’s basically two K-type thermocouple temperature sensors that can read temperatures up to -200 degrees, another thing that extreme overclockers that dabble with LN2 will appreciate.

Tying everything together is the OC Key, an overclocking tool that gives you a visual overlay of how your system is doing during OC sessions. It’s roughly the size of a memory module and connects into the videocard. Once plugged in, you’ll be able to see and tweak -a good amount of information about your system – voltages, temperature – basically all the important information that overclockers need when pushing their system to the limit. You’ll also be able to change settings on the fly, right from the screen – no more restarts, just pure OC joy.

Of course all of these features (which coincidentally also includes some of the features present in their P9X79 series of boards) does come at a premium price. While ASUS did not comment on how much this bad boy will cost, it’s probably safe to say that your wallet will be taking a major beating if you ever buy one of these.

New TUF Sabertooth X79 ditches complete thermal armor, adds additional fans instead

ASUS’ TUF (The Ultimate Force) line of boards has always put emphasis on making extremely tough motherboards. Built using military grade components and backed by 5 year warranties, the TUF line has made a name for itself for being almost indestructible with normal use. The new Sabertooth X79 motherboard for Intel’s X79 chipset continues that noble tradition, and combines the some of the features found on their P9X79 series with the extreme durability for the Sabertooth X79.

Probably the biggest change people familiar with the Sabertooth series is the absence of the full thermal armor present in the Sabertooth P67. There’s still thermal armor present, but ASUS has decided reduce the coverage area to just two critical locations – one near the I/O ports, and one near the SATA connections. In addition to the thermal armor, both locations also have their own fans blowing hot air out, which helps in keeping the board cool.

Users will also be able to monitor the overall temperature of the board, as well as locate hotspots via the 12 embedded thermal sensors on-board. Users will also be able to configure and tweak the fans to help mitigate heat, which is important for people who’ll want to use the board in overclocking projects down the line. And like we mentioned before, the Sabertooth X79 will also utilize some of the features found in the P9X79 series like the easy to use SSD caching.

ASUS outs P9X79 series of boards for mainstream users, easy SSD caching, built-in Wi-Fi

ASUS has been synonymous with solid, cutting edge design and innovation when it comes to motherboards. With Intel’s new X79 chipset coming soon (and we mean really soon) it wasn’t surprising that the company already had a couple of motherboards ready to go when the new processors landed. We’ll be highlighting three new ASUS motherboards throughout the day that uses the new chipset, and we’ll be starting with the company’s mainstream board series – the P9X79.

The P9X79 comes in three flavors – Standard, Deluxe and Pro. Aside from a few features being cut out from the Pro and Standard model, all three boards are nearly identical. The three boardsuse ASUS’ UEFI graphical user interface for configuring the BIOS, which means you’ll actually be able to understand what the settings do in your BIOS without feeling like a complete idiot. New, Dual Intelligent Processors 3 architecture featuring ASUS’ latest DIGI+ Power and new Digi+ DRAM technology make the series one of the best in its class which translate into a better computing experience overall.

One of the nice features of the series (which coincidentally, is shared by the TUF Sabertooth X79 and the Rampage IV Extreme) is the implementation of SSD Caching. For those who don’t know, SSD Caching allows Intel’s Z68 chipset owners to use an SSD drive to function as a cache for conventional HDDs in an effort to improve performance. Unfortunately, this isn’t an easy task, and requires users to jump through a lot of hoops to use. ASUS’ SSD Caching method is ridiculously easy in comparison, which only requires users to plug in the SSD drive in the right SATA port (which is clearly marked) and run an application in Windows that sets everything up.

Another nice feature is the ability to be able to flash the BIOS without the need for a video card, CPU or hard drive attached to the system through the ASUS USB BIOS Flashback. The new series also has built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on-board, which allows you to connect it to your existing network without adding additional wires to the mix.

ASUS announces 3 new motherboards for Intel’s X79 Chipsets – P9X79, TUF SABERTOOTH X79 and ROG Rampage IV Extreme

Last last week we went to Singapore to attend Asus’ Global Technical seminar for Intel’s upcoming X79 series of chipsets for the 2011 socket. Since the NDA we signed is finally lifted as of today we’re finally able to give you a peek at what’s coming. Three new motherboard products were announced – the P9X79 for mainstream users, the TUF SABERTOOTH X79 for people looking for a tough board that lasts and the ROG Rampage IV Extreme, which is aimed at power gamers and overclockers. All three boards will use Intel’s 2nd generation of Core i7 processors for high-end desktops, though each board has a unique twist to them (that we’ll detail in separate articles later). For now, you can ogle at the board shots that we managed to take during the event.

Finding an organ donor is as easy as going online

Social media is doing more than just connecting old friends and family. It’s also doing more than just letting us voice out our opinions, our personal outrage, and even the trivialities of everyday living. Now, social media has become an effective means to save lives, whether it be a means to communicate during disaster (such as what happened during several of our typhoons) or to perhaps find another chance at life.

Amit Gupta, an online entrepreneur suffering from acute leukemia, decided that he would not only use Twitter and Tumblr to keep his family and friends updated on his condition. Rather, he would use it to reach out to find a matching bone marrow donor, something we often see as a difficult task when portrayed in movies, where chances are slim and matching donors are far and few. Though no match has been found yet, he remains hopeful and grateful.

One success story is that of Roxy Kurze who aired her pleas via a Facebook status which read: “Wishing a kidney would fall out of the sky so my husband can stop suffering… If anyone knows of a live donor with type O blood, PLEASE let me know.” She found a willing donor through a Facebook friend she’d met only once. Ricky Cisco willingly donated his kidney to Kurze’s husband.

“I always wanted to be a hero, but I’m not very strong. I can’t lift anything, I can’t save people in traditional ways. I do have an extra kidney,” Cisco told The Daily Mail.

While this method of finding a donor remains controversial as some people still feel that personal health and condition remain private, sometimes, when you or your loved one’s life is on the line, an invasion of privacy is a small price to pay for that second chance.

GarageBand now available for iPhone and iPod Touch

    0

The GarageBand app is no longer exclusive to the iPad, as Apple has recently announced support for both the iPhone and iPod Touch. Quite frankly, it’s about time.

The app initially costs a mere USD 4.99 (approx Php 214), but the great news is that if you’ve already downloaded it on your iPad, migrating it to your other iOS device(s) is free. GarageBand is now primed to run on the iPad, iPad 2, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S and iPod Touch (third and fourth generation).

We initially published a feature on this great app in our June 2011 print issue, but just in case you didn’t get a chance to read it, GarageBand is without a doubt, a must-have app, whether you’re a seasoned musician or an enthusiast just looking to mess around. Examples of its user friendly features include Smart Instruments and auto-scaling which allows even those without any knowledge of musical theory to create music.

Robotic-assisted eye surgery for better vision

Eye surgery may arguably be one of the scariest types of surgery anyone has to undergo. There’s always that fear of losing your vision and the fact that you’re wide-eyed and awake for the entire procedure isn’t really all that comforting. Let’s add the human variable of malpractice and sheer human error.

PhD researcher Thijs Meenink from the Eindhoven University of Technology hopes to minimize the anxiety from this type of procedure as well as the dangers and has developed a remote surgery system that takes the place of humanoid doctors. This smart eye-surgery robot will allow eye surgeons to operate with greater precision, even when the hand tremors start to kick in as they age. But don’t worry – the ophthalmologist has full control of the robot. It’s almost like the robotic-assisted surgery The Medical City launched last year, a treatment program that hopes to achieve better outcomes and less recovery time when it comes to invasive surgery.

Battlefield 3 is currently EA’s fastest selling game ever

Electronic Arts has released a statement celebrating the success of Battlefield 3 – which has become the software developer’s fastest selling game ever. The first person shooter reportedly sold 5 million copies in its first week globally, after hitting store shelves last October 25th. Currently, Battlefield 3 now holds the record for the most initial sales in EA’s successful history, topping heavyweights in their lineup such as FIFA and Madden.

Attributing the games success to high-scored reviews across all compatible platforms (PS3 / Xbox 360/PC) and via good ol’ word-of-mouth, EA is proud to report that their servers are now withstanding the massive volume of users logging on for the “superior multi-player experience”, after some initial problems.

So, if you’re willing to dole out the cash, you might want to grab a copy. But don’t forget that Modern Warfare 3 is set for release on November 8.

HTC takes top honors in the US, beats Samsung and Apple

While Samsung may be doing the jiggy because of their solid performance around the world this quarter, HTC is doing a little dance of its own. Research firm Canalys has just released a report saying that the Taiwanese brand has bested both Sammy and Apple when it comes to smartphones, with HTC delivering 5.7 million smartphones – a ways off from Apple’s 4.6 million and Samsung’s 4.9 million. ‘However you count it, HTC has become a deserved leader in the US smart phone market,’ said Palo Alto-based Canalys Vice President and Principal Analyst, Chris Jones. ‘This is an awesome achievement for HTC, which has built a premium brand in a highly competitive market in just a few short years. It now has a strong range of 4G Android products, with devices ranged by each of the major carriers, and offers some of the most compelling and differentiated products found on the platform today.’

The report also states that RIM, once a formidable market leader in the US is slipping rapidly with its volumes declining 58% from a year ago and its US market share slipping from 24% in Q3 2010 to just 9% in Q3 2011. It’s not all red ink however, as the Canadian firm managed to grow 59% in EMEA and 56% in APAC over a year ago, largely driven by the popularity of its BBM service.

Anonymous takes on Mexican drug cartel

Say what you want about Anonymous, but when these guys pick a fight, they don’t back down. TNW reports that Anonymous Mexico is going up against one of the most dangerous drug cartels in the world, Los Zetas. Spurred by a kidnapping incident of one of their own (if this video is to be believed) a spokesman for the group says that if the hostage is not released, the group will start to publicly name and shame policemen, politician, judges and other people connected to the cartel.

If Anonymous Mexico are taking on the Los Zetas, they risk a lot more than just an internet flame war. Back in September, Los Zetas killed a man and a woman and then hung them on a bridge as a warning to social media users not to criticise Mexican drug cartels on the internet. A sign reading ‘This is going to happen to all those posting funny things on the internet, You better (expletive) pay attention. I’m about to get you’, was left beside the bodies. Anonymous Mexico has already fired the first shots, and have defaced a website belonging to a politician who many believe has close ties to the drug cartel. If Anonymous Mexico is willing to wage war on Los Zetas on the internet, let’s hope that they’re using more than just one proxy.

Guy makes homemade LEGO clock, warms our nerd hearts

    1

LEGOs have been used to make many things – homages to geek culture, cities and now, a fully functional mechanical clock. Made by Hans Anderson, the Time Twister clock looks simple but is incredibly complex. Powered by two LEGO Mindstorms NXT micro-computers chatting over Bluetooth, the Time Twister tells time in a completely awesome and hypnotic way, while noisily telling you that yes, it’s now 10:00 and you’re already late for your appointment. Mr. Anderson managed this impressive feat of nerdery by making the two LEGO Mindstorms bricks communicate via Bluetooth. Seriously, pictures won’t do this thing any justice, it’s best if you just watch the video of it in action:

Halloween costume is a functioning Nikon DSLR

If you think you’re Halloween costume is cool, you might want to see what this guy did first.

Tyler Card created a fully functional Nikon DSLR costume – and by functional, we mean that it can actually shoot photos that can be viewed on an “LCD display”. Modeled after the Nikon D3, the body is made of scrap cardboard taped together, with a plastic bucket that acts as the “lens”, which actually conceals and contains a real Nikon DSLR. The “LCD” on the other hand is salvaged from an old Dell laptop screen. According to Tyler, his costume is also equipped with a wireless transmitter for off-camera flash.

Pretty cool. How does your costume compare to this?
