The hidden risks to heart health go beyond diet and lifestyle

Caring for the heart goes beyond an annual reminder. While Filipinos recently marked World Heart Day, keeping it healthy is a daily priority. After all, related diseases to it continue to be among the country’s top health concerns and consistent leading cause of death in the Philippines.

Beyond well-known factors like diet, exercise, and smoking, new research points to less visible risks. A study by NYU Langone Health this year linked chemicals commonly found in plastics, called phthalates, to more than 350,000 cardiovascular-related deaths globally. With the Philippines being one of the world’s biggest consumers of single-use plastics, using millions each day, this adds another layer of urgency to protecting cardiovascular wellness.

Everyday Steps to Lower Heart Risks

Maintaining healthy habits is still the most effective way to reduce risk. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends at least 150 minutes of weekly physical activity, avoiding tobacco, and maintaining healthy levels of blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar. Routine screenings also play a critical role in catching conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, or high cholesterol before they progress.

Furthermore, stress management through quality sleep, meditation, and mindfulness, along with a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein, and healthy fats, form the foundation for overall wellness. Omega-3 fatty acids in particular help reduce inflammation, lower triglycerides, and support circulation, while antioxidants protect against oxidative stress.

For added protection, Filipinos can combine these healthy habits with targeted nutrition like LAC TRIMAX™ Omega Fish Oil + CoQ-10, a premium 2-in-1 supplement designed to help promote heart health and overall vitality.

Each softgel delivers 1355mg of purified fish oil concentrate, providing 949mg of omega-3 fatty acids (Eicosapentaenoic Acid & Docosahexaenoic Acid) that help maintain healthy cholesterol, blood pressure, and circulation, ensuring nutrients and oxygen are efficiently delivered throughout the body. It also contains 100mg of Coenzyme Q-10, a vital nutrient for heart muscle strength and energy production. Since natural CoQ-10 levels decline with age, supplementation helps restore vitality, reduce breathlessness, and keep the heart performing at its peak.

Additionally, LAC TRIMAX™ Omega Fish Oil + CoQ-10 aids brain function, joint flexibility, skin comfort, and mood balance which helps Filipinos stay energized, resilient, and full of vitality at every stage of life. Purified to remove contaminants and enteric-coated to minimize fishy aftertaste, it is also safe for long-term use with just one softgel daily.

Awareness of both lifestyle and environmental risks, combined with proactive daily habits, is still a key to protecting overall well-being as cardiovascular disease continues to be a major health concern in the country.

MMDC introduces AI and English training micro credentials and a Pay-as-You-Grow payment model for working students

Mapúa Malayan Digital College (MMDC) recently expanded its microcredential certification offerings and introduced a flexible Pay-as-You-Grow payment model designed to make learning more accessible to working students, non-graduate professionals, and career shifters.

Given the rapid pace of innovation and globalization in the labor market, proficiency in both artificial intelligence (AI) and the English language has become essential for career growth and global competitiveness.

MMDC unveiled three new certification programs aligned with this growing demand in the job market. Expanding its offerings in technology, it recently introduced the AI Fundamentals certification program. MMDC also ventured into English language education with the introduction of the English as a Second Language (ESL) and the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Preparation certification programs.

“With AI and ESL skills in high demand in the job market and IELTS scores becoming a passport to global opportunities, these new certifications were designed to meet the immediate needs of learners and employers,” Noel Torregoza, MMDC Learning & Development Director, said. “We want our students to finish these programs not only with certificates but with skills they can apply in their jobs.”

The AI Fundamentals certification program teaches students to define real-world AI use cases, choose the right models for every scenario, and craft effective prompts using frameworks like Role, Goal, Context, Execution (RGCE). It also covers AI interactions optimization and management, as well as teaches students to use AI responsibly and strategically. The program is priced at PHP5,000 and can be completed in four weeks with 10 hours of study per week.

For those interested in teaching English as a Second Language (ESL), the ESL Instructor certification program is the ideal certification program. It covers theories of language acquisition, instructional strategies, and assessment methods for basic macro skills like listening, reading, writing, and speaking. It also includes the use of technology in ESL instruction. This program also costs PHP5,000 for eight weeks with eight hours of study per week.

Meanwhile, the IELTS Preparation certification program offers targeted training in listening, reading, writing, and speaking. This helps students achieve higher scores in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam, a gateway to global academic and professional opportunities. The program costs PHP4,000 and runs for eight weeks, at eight hours of study per week.

All three new programs only require a high school diploma.

New Pay-As-You-Grow payment model increases accessibility

MMDC also introduced a new payment model to make learning more accessible to more Filipinos across the country. Called Pay-As-You-Grow, the new payment scheme allows students to start their certification journey with a minimum upfront payment of only PHP5,000. Learners can then pay for succeeding modules as they progress, starting at just PHP1,000 per course. This offering aims to reduce financial barriers for individuals who want to upskill but may not have the resources to pay the full cost of a program upfront.

“MMDC understands the realities that working students and professionals face—balancing work, studies, and financial responsibilities,” said Jenny Chua, MMDC vice president. “Through Pay-As-You-Grow, we are making education more flexible and affordable, so learners can take charge of their future without the pressure of large, one-time payments.”

For all certification programs, participants have the option to pay via the All-in Access model, where they pay the full program fee upfront, or the more flexible Pay-As-You-Grow model.

Alongside its new program offerings, MMDC’s certification programs also include IBM Data Analytics, Google Digital Marketing & E-commerce, Meta Social Media Marketing, Adobe Content Creation, and Virtual Assistance courses. These programs provide practical, job-ready skills, ideal for working students and non-graduate professionals who want to upskill, reskill, or gain specific expertise while managing other commitments.

With new certification programs, affordable pricing, and a flexible Pay-as-You-Grow payment model, MMDC reaffirms its commitment to making world-class certifications accessible to more Filipinos. To learn more about MMDC’s certification programs, visit mmdc.mcl.edu.ph

    realme 15 Pro 5G reviewed

Every new phone launch comes with the same big question: Does it bring anything fresh to the table, or is it just another pretty face with a spec sheet? The realme 15 Pro 5G positions itself as both an eye-catching device that also promises reliable performance, playful AI features, and all-day usability. After spending time with it, the phone feels less like a simple upgrade and more like a personality piece, blending style, brains, and a touch of quirk.

    Design: 4.5/5

    realme 15 Pro 5G

Opening the box felt like a blind box purchase because I had no clue which color variant I would get. To my surprise, I pulled out the Flowing Silver version. As a girl, that moment felt like a little unboxing win. The finish is so beautiful that using a case almost feels like a crime. The reflective silver catches light in a way that makes it look more like jewelry than just another gadget.

But there is a trade-off. The triple-camera setup on the back has huge lenses, which look striking but also make the phone awkward to place flat on a table. It wobbles in a way that is just uncomfortable to see. Beautiful, yes. Practical, not always.

    Hardware: 4/5

Internally, the realme 15 Pro 5G is powered by the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 (5G, 4nm) chip, which makes everyday use feel effortless. Whether I’m gaming, juggling Spotify with messages, or falling into a TikTok rabbit hole, it doesn’t flinch. With 12GB RAM (expandable up to ~14GB), I can leave way too many apps open and it still runs smoothly. Storage is generous, with options of 256GB or 512GB, which feels like a green light to hoard K-drama episodes, thousands of photos, and way too many memes.

The display is where things get extra. The 6.8-inch 4D Curve+ AMOLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate makes scrolling through Instagram or YouTube buttery smooth, and the 6,500nits peak brightness means I can actually see my screen under the brutal Philippine sun. It’s like a little cinema in your hand but sharper and brighter than you’d expect.

Camera-wise, it’s fun to play with three 50MP lenses. The Sony IMX896 main sensor with OIS delivers crisp results, the ultra-wide lens is perfect for group shots, and the 50MP selfie camera makes you rethink ever settling for less.

Then there’s the battery. Packing a 7,000mAh cell, this thing can handle a whole day of doom-scrolling and Netflix binges without panicking. When it does need juice, the 80W SUPERVOOC charging feels like grabbing a snack; you’re back at it in no time.

    User Experience: 3.5/5

Using the realme 15 Pro 5G feels like having a pocket-sized entertainment buddy. The display is a joy to watch, especially for binge sessions. Colors pop in a way that looks realistic rather than exaggerated, which makes hours of Netflix or YouTube feel immersive. But here’s the catch: watch long enough and the phone gives off a bit of warmth in your hands. Not unbearable, but noticeable, like it is reminding you to take a break.

For gaming, it pulls through decently even on heavier titles like Mobile Legends and Call of Duty Mobile. Graphics look smooth, animations stay responsive, and the 120Hz refresh rate helps keep gameplay fluid. The only trade-off is that extended gaming sessions can heat it up, so you might want to keep breaks in between matches.

The star of the realme 15 Pro 5G experience, though, is the AI Genie. Think of it as your built-in photo editor that listens to oddly specific wishes. I tested it with a few fun prompts. First, I asked it to turn a massive dog into a cat, and the result was decent. It actually looked like a cat, though nothing too mind-blowing. Next, I told it to swap out the man on a book cover for a woman, and it managed to pull it off in a way that was recognizable but not perfect. Lastly, I had it erase the words “Artificial Intelligence” on the same cover. It got messed up. Just like any generative AI, the more detailed your instructions, the better the outcome. It feels almost like chatting with a genie, except this one sometimes takes your wish a little too literally.

On top of that, I also tried out the Starburst and Heart lighting effects. They are undeniably cute and fun for quick experiments, but honestly, they are more of a “just because you can” feature. Playful? Yes. Essential? Not really. They land in that category of features you will try once or twice for the novelty, then forget about until you are bored at 2 AM.

    Value: 4/5

The realme 15 Pro 5G comes in at PHP27,999 for the 12GB + 256GB variant. It is not exactly budget-friendly, but you are paying for a combination of premium design, reliable performance, and an AI-powered camera experience. For those who want a phone that looks stunning and has enough brains to match, this price tag feels justified.

    Bottomline

The realme 15 Pro 5G is like that friend who is effortlessly pretty but also surprisingly smart. It nails design with its Flowing Silver finish, delivers dependable performance for everyday use, and adds playful AI features that you can show off to friends. Sure, it runs a little warm and has a few gimmicky tricks, but if you are after a phone that balances style, performance, and fun, this one makes a strong case for itself.

    • 6.8-inch 4D Curve+ AMOLED display
    • Triple 50MP cameras
    • AI Genie photo editing

    • Effects seem gimmicky

    Specifications:

    • Triple 50MP AI Cameras with 4K @ 60fps video on all three rear lenses

    • Cooling: 7000mm² Airflow Vapor Chamber Cooling System
    • Thickness: ~7.79 mm slim design

How many is too many gaming influencers?

Open any streaming platform today and you are met with an endless scroll of gamers going live. Some play the latest blockbuster titles with polished production, while others broadcast from modest setups that feel more like hanging out with a friend. What began as a small community of standout personalities has grown into a saturated field where nearly everyone seems to be a gaming influencer. This rapid growth has reshaped both the way audiences engage with gaming content and the way influence itself is understood.

The Attention Economy and Influencer Fatigue

The gaming space today resembles a crowded auditorium where everyone has a microphone. With Twitch streamers, TikTok creators, and YouTubers producing content at unprecedented rates, audiences are confronted with more material than they can possibly consume. Economist and Nobel Laureate Herbert Simon’s concept of the “attention economy” explains this phenomenon well. Information is abundant, but attention is scarce. The result is a form of “influencer fatigue,” where viewers no longer have the capacity or the patience to keep up with the endless stream of content. For brands, this scarcity of attention makes the marketplace even more competitive, as they struggle to identify which voices are genuinely worth investing in.

    gaming influencer

From Gatekeepers to the Long Tail

Not long ago, a handful of big personalities dominated the gaming world, functioning as cultural gatekeepers. Their opinions carried disproportionate weight in shaping community discourse. Today, however, we see the rise of what Chris Anderson calls the “long tail,” where smaller creators can thrive by catering to niche interests.

A streamer focused on speed-running obscure retro titles or a TikTok creator blending Filipino folklore with game commentary may never rival the top one percent in follower counts, but they can build communities rooted in shared identity and passion. This shift highlights the democratizing potential of the digital era, where influence is no longer determined solely by mainstream appeal but also by the ability to cultivate micro-communities.

The Iron Law of Oligarchy in Gaming Content

Despite this apparent democratization, not all creators enjoy the same opportunities. Robert Michels’ “iron law of oligarchy” reminds us that even in systems designed for openness, power tends to consolidate at the top. The gaming influencer ecosystem reflects this tendency.

Sponsorship deals, algorithmic visibility, and major platform support often flow disproportionately toward a select few creators. This reinforces a hierarchy that mirrors the very inequalities digital culture was supposed to dismantle. The paradox leaves smaller creators in a precarious position, visible enough to contribute but rarely resourced enough to compete with the industry’s elite.

Cultural Capital and the New Meaning of Influence

The question then becomes, what does it mean to be influential in such a crowded space? Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of cultural capital offers a useful lens. Influence cannot be reduced to numbers alone. It is about legitimacy, authority, and the symbolic power a creator holds within their community.

For example, a creator with modest reach may carry significant weight in shaping the discourse of a specific fandom, precisely because their expertise or authenticity grants them trust. In this sense, influence in gaming is increasingly about credibility within context rather than broad, undifferentiated visibility.

The Brand Dilemma: Reach vs. Relevance

Brands now find themselves at a crossroads. The established logic of advertising favors mass reach, yet the new creator landscape offers opportunities for hyper-targeted engagement. Choosing between mega-influencers and smaller, community-based creators forces companies to weigh scale against intimacy. While the former provides visibility, the latter offers authenticity and deeper resonance with niche audiences. This dilemma reflects a larger tension in digital culture, one that asks whether success is measured by volume or by depth of connection.

    Gaming Culture Beyond Metrics

Perhaps the most compelling aspect of this transformation is the cultural shift it signals. Gaming influencers are not only entertainers but also curators of values, stories, and communities. When smaller creators introduce inclusive narratives, revive forgotten genres, or experiment with creative formats, they shape gaming culture in ways that numbers alone cannot capture. This reminds us that influence should be understood not only as the ability to draw viewers but also as the capacity to redefine the cultural fabric of gaming itself.

The question “How many is too many?” might not have a fixed answer. The abundance of gaming influencers does create noise, but it also signals a cultural shift where the power to shape conversations no longer rests with a few visible figures. Influence is being renegotiated every day, sometimes in small Discord servers and sometimes in mainstream arenas watched by millions. Perhaps the real issue is not the number of influencers but how gaming culture decides whose voices matter. In the end, the future of gaming influence may belong less to those who are the loudest and more to those who leave lasting imprints on how we play, connect, and imagine new worlds.

Beyond the screen: Esports and gaming tourism

I’ve followed esports for years, both as a fan and as someone who understands the cultural and economic ripples it creates. What started as a niche hobby has evolved into a global phenomenon, not just in terms of viewership but also in the way it influences travel and tourism. Today, we’re seeing a new trend emerge: esports and gaming tourism.

Think of it this way: when a country hosts a major sporting event like the Olympics, tourists pour in to experience the spectacle. Esports is beginning to carve out the same kind of impact. Take the 2024 Paris Olympics as an example—it posted a profit of approximately USD 86.8 million from ticket sales and sponsorships, excluding the billions spent by tourists. International tourism revenue in France hit 71-billion Euros that year, with a noticeable boost during the Games. Now imagine that kind of momentum translated to an esports event.

    Why Hosting Esports Tournaments Matters

One of the defining strengths of esports is its built-in global audience. Millions of viewers tune in to watch tournaments online. In 2024, the League of Legends World Championship reached over 6 million peak viewers, the highest for any esports event to date. That same year, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang dominated Southeast Asia, with MPL Indonesia Season 15 pulling in more than 4 million viewers during its grand finals. More recently, the 2025 Esports World Cup recorded 3 million peak views during the Mobile Legends Mid-Season Cup finals.

These numbers aren’t just stats. They represent potential tourists. Just as sports fans travel to watch games live, esports fans are increasingly willing to hop on a plane to catch their favorite teams in action.

    From Screens to Cities

    gaming tourism

We’ve already seen how esports tournaments can have a direct impact on local economies. A study of the 2024 Perfect World Shanghai Major for Counter-Strike 2 revealed a 66% year-over-year increase in inbound tourists to the city, accompanied by a surge in hotel demand. In London, the 2024 League of Legends Championship finals generated an estimated 12 million British pounds in tourism and related activities. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia’s creation of the Esports World Cup in 2024 not only drew 3.5 million online viewers but also boosted tourist arrivals to Riyadh by 30%.

These cases underscore the significant impact of esports as a driving force in the economy. Hosting a major tournament requires logistics, infrastructure, and hospitality. But for cities willing to invest, the payoff can be significant.

    Conventions and Community

Beyond tournaments, conventions have also become magnets for gamers. The US is home to massive events like PAX, which celebrates gaming and pop culture, and EVO, the go-to event for fighting game fans and aspiring pros. Then there’s TwitchCon, born from Amazon’s streaming giant, where fans can meet their favorite streamers. What began as a single event in the US has now spread to both sides of the Atlantic.

    Unique Gaming Experiences

Some cities are going beyond one-off events to build tourism experiences around gaming itself. Seoul is perhaps the best example. With its esports stadiums and legendary PC Bang cafés, it’s one of the few cities in the world where you can book a guided gaming tour. Visitors can explore team headquarters, practice facilities, and even play in the same cafés where professional players once honed their skills. Some teams even open their HQs for fans to experience what it’s like to train like a pro.

China has taken a different approach, pioneering gaming-themed hotels. Imagine checking into a room not just with a bed and TV, but with a high-powered gaming PC ready for all-night sessions. Some hotels even offer team rooms with multiple PCs for group play or training camps.

The Road Ahead for Esports Tourism

Esports and gaming tourism may still be in their early stages, but the potential is undeniable. Cities that build the proper infrastructure can tap into a passionate and growing global community. It might sound niche today, but so did esports itself a decade ago. Now, it’s impossible to ignore.

Maybe one day, tour buses filled with esports fans will line up outside team headquarters, or travel agencies will offer packages that take gamers from one legendary internet café to another. As both a fan and someone who has seen the industry grow, I can’t wait to see where this new journey takes us.

Digital playgrounds: How online games teach kids to socialize

Not too long ago, kids would rush out of school and head straight to the nearest park. Swings, slides, and games of tag were where friendships began. Today, the playground looks very different. Instead of monkey bars, children log into online games. Their hangout spots are no longer neighborhood parks but digital playgrounds where they can chat, build, and play with friends, sometimes even with kids living on the other side of the world.

For parents who grew up hearing the phrase “go outside and play,” this shift can feel surprising, even worrying. But for today’s generation, video games are quickly becoming the new digital playgrounds. Just like the swings and seesaws of the past, these digital spaces are where kids learn to talk, work together, and build friendships. The only difference is that it all happens behind a screen.

Why Roblox and Minecraft Are More Than Just Games

    digital playground

To adults, Roblox may look like a jumble of cartoonish worlds, while Minecraft appears to be nothing more than a block-stacking game. But to children, these digital playgrounds are vast, open spaces filled with imagination and connection.

Roblox is not a single game. It is a platform that offers millions of experiences created by users themselves. Kids can role-play as restaurant owners, superheroes, or explorers, often side by side with their friends.

Minecraft works more like a digital sandbox, often compared to virtual building blocks. Players can construct sprawling cities, fight monsters in survival challenges, or simply log in to chat and share their creativity.

Even Fortnite, which many parents know only as a competitive battle royale, now offers a Creative Mode where children can design their own games and worlds. In these spaces, kids are not only playing, they are creating and sharing with others.

To children, these games are not just a pastime. They are gathering places. Much like basketball courts or shopping malls serve as meeting points for teenagers, these digital playgrounds provide a social outlet. The only difference is that kids do not need to leave their bedrooms to join in.

    The Social Side of Gaming

Many adults still imagine gaming as a solitary activity, picturing kids sitting alone in front of a screen. In reality, many of today’s most popular games are social hubs.

Children do not simply play. They talk, laugh, and share their stories while gaming. In Roblox or Minecraft, conversations flow just as naturally as they would in a schoolyard. They joke with friends, give each other encouragement, and even provide comfort during tough days. For shy or introverted kids, these interactions can feel easier than speaking face-to-face. Behind a screen, they often find the confidence to express themselves more freely.

These games also foster teamwork and problem-solving skills. Running a virtual pizza shop, exploring a dungeon, or building an entire city requires cooperation and planning. The online setting also removes physical boundaries. A child in Manila can just as easily work on a castle with a friend in New York as with a neighbor down the street.

In this sense, gaming has become a new kind of playground. Children are not only playing within a game. They are playing through it, turning digital spaces into places where friendships grow.

    The Benefits of Social Gaming

For most children, gaming is not just entertainment. It is where relationships are built and strengthened. Meeting up after school might now mean logging into Roblox or Minecraft instead of visiting the local park, but the spirit of hanging out remains the same.

For children who are naturally quiet or hesitant in social situations, games often make interaction easier. Talking while exploring or building feels less intimidating than speaking face-to-face. It provides a bridge to connect with others.

The benefits go beyond friendship. Team-based games teach quick thinking, strategy, and collaboration. Creative platforms inspire storytelling, design skills, and even the basics of coding, often without children realizing that they are learning.

Perhaps one of the most important advantages is inclusivity. Physical playgrounds sometimes leave children out, whether because of athletic ability or social dynamics. Digital playgrounds open the door for more kids to join in, contribute, and feel part of the group.

    The Not-So-Fun Side

Like traditional playgrounds, digital ones are not without risks. It is easy for children to spend too many hours in front of a screen, missing out on sleep, schoolwork, and physical activity.

The chat features in these games can also be a double-edged sword. While meeting new people can be fun, it also exposes children to strangers who may not have the best intentions. Bullying is another concern. Hurtful words or being excluded from group play can sting even more online because the negativity can follow a child across every login.

Then there is the issue of in-game purchases. Many games are filled with tempting upgrades, outfits, and add-ons. They may seem small, but the costs can add up quickly, sometimes before parents realize how much has been spent.

None of this makes gaming “bad.” It simply highlights the need for balance and guidance. Setting reasonable time limits, talking openly about who children interact with, and keeping track of purchases can all help keep gaming safe and fun. Even better, when parents take a genuine interest in what their kids are building or who they are playing with, gaming turns into something families can share rather than something to worry about.

    Expert Take

Experts agree that online games are not automatically harmful. In fact, they can nurture valuable life skills such as collaboration, creativity, and problem-solving. Schools are even adopting platforms like Minecraft Education Edition to bring lessons to life and make learning more engaging.

Still, balance is key. Too much screen time can affect sleep, school performance, and physical activity. Risks such as cyberbullying, interactions with strangers, and overspending are real. That is why parental involvement matters. When parents set boundaries, talk to their kids, and stay interested in what they are creating online, gaming can be both safe and rewarding.

Final Word: More Than Just Play

For today’s children, games like Roblox, Minecraft, and Fortnite are not just forms of entertainment. They have become modern hangouts. Instead of gathering at the park, kids meet online, chat, and build together in virtual environments that foster both fun and friendship.

The spaces may be digital, but the lessons remain familiar. Cooperation, creativity, sharing, and imagination all thrive within these worlds. What appears to be “screen time” to adults often feels like genuine social time to children.

Intense battles at BRC shake up 2025 SEAOIL Radical Challenge PH standings

There was no shortage of action during Round 2 of the 2025 SEAOIL Radical Challenge Philippines when the country’s fastest racing series headed to the Batangas Racing Circuit (BRC). The skies stayed dry throughout the three-day event, but looming clouds mirrored the tension on track—especially between top runners in both the SR1 and SR3 Challenge Cups.

    Radical Challenge

Fueled by race-engineered SEAOIL Extreme-97 fuel, Qualifying on Saturday saw Mikey Jordan of Jordan Racing x Autoholic Garage set the early pace in SR3, clocking a 1:37.364 lap to claim pole position. But the spotlight quickly shifted to Juha Turalba, who surprised the field by qualifying P2 overall—outpacing several SR3 machines in his SR1 and beating the next SR1 driver by over six-tenths of a second.

Unfortunately, Jordan’s weekend got off to a rocky start when a clutch issue sidelined his neon-green #23 SR3 before Race 1 even began. As the lights went out, Turalba led a three-wide sprint into Turn 1 against Jamal Almario and Miguel Quiñones. He held position while Quiñones and Almario battled for P2. On Lap 5, Quiñones finally found a way through, but by then Turalba had already built a commanding lead. Turalba took a lights-to-flag victory in SR1 with a 5.174 sec margin over Quiñones in 2nd, with Almario rounding out the podium in 3rd. In SR3, Rafa Caceres of C&C Motorsport capitalized on Jordan’s absence to claim the class win with a clean, consistent drive.

On Sunday, Jordan returned to action with a spare SR3, starting from the back of the grid. But it didn’t take long for the championship leader to charge through the field—taking the lead by Turn 1 and never looking back. Behind him, the battle in SR1 was heating up. It was another three-way fight between Almario, Turalba, and Quiñones with Almario leading the way. Turalba’s spirited charge into Turn 8 unfortunately ended with contact against the barriers, resulting in a red flag for Race 2.

Jordan secured his first win of the weekend in SR3, followed by Caceres in 2nd. With classifications reverted to the last completed lap, Almario was awarded the class win in SR1, Turalba 2nd, and Quiñones 3rd. Though his #44 machine was heavily damaged, Turalba fortunately sustained only minor injuries and is expected to make a full recovery.

The final race of the weekend saw Almario briefly take the lead after a sluggish getaway from Jordan. But the SR3 driver quickly reclaimed P1 and went on to take another dominant victory. Quiñones later passed Almario on Lap 2 for the SR1 lead. Almario attempted to strike back but spun under braking into Turn 1, allowing Quiñones to cruise to his first win of the 2025 season.

After Round 2, Mikey Jordan extends his lead in the SR3 Challenge Cup standings, with Rafa Caceres now up to 2nd and Andre Rodrigues holding 3rd. In the SR1 Challenge Cup, Juha Turalba retains the points lead, but his participation in Round 3 remains uncertain. Miguel Quiñones climbs to 2nd, with Jamal Almario close behind in 3rd.

With Official Operations Partner Petromax, the championship resumes on October 17–19 at Clark International Speedway (CIS) for Round 3 as the season passes its halfway mark.
The 2025 SEAOIL Radical Challenge Philippines is sponsored by SEAOIL Philippines, Inc., Bank of the Philippine Islands, Petromax, Dove Men, Axe, The AutoComplex, Second Skin Industries, Tieline, and John Barbers.

Fueling the future of Filipino creativity at Purveyr Fair with Maya

Creativity has always been at the core of Filipino culture, shaping what we eat, wear, and experience every day. Since 2012, Purveyr has been championing this spirit, evolving from a blog into a multidimensional concept that hosts Purveyr Fair, a platform where independent creators and communities come together to celebrate local culture.

This year’s Purveyr Fair was its biggest yet, double the size of last year’s, bringing together an even more diverse mix of creative communities. From fashion to tattooing, homeware to streetwear, illustration to food, the fair managed to keep that same intimate, inspiring energy that fairgoers have come to love.

And with Maya, the Philippines’ #1 Fintech Ecosystem and Digital Bank, as a partner, that vision grew even stronger, making it easier for fairgoers to support creators and for small businesses to thrive.

“Purveyr Fair is about connection,” says founder Marvin Conanan. “It’s creators meeting communities, people discovering new cultures, and audiences seeing just how alive and diverse creativity is in the Philippines.”

But this year marked a first for Purveyr Fair—partnering with a digital bank to empower merchants with cashless payments and new opportunities to grow their sales. “Purveyr Fair has always been a marketplace, and Maya is a perfect partner in terms of business growth and development,” adds Marvin. “And beyond just payments, Maya Black’s aesthetic and brand language resonate with the creative community. It feels natural to the culture we’re celebrating.”

With Maya Business powering the Purveyr Fair, visitors could tap or scan their way through the event, while merchants seamlessly accepted everything from QR to credit and debit cards, no cash, no hassle.

“Accessibility in payments is crucial to that—especially card payments. It makes it easier for people to support what we do,” says Marvin. “But more than transactions, Maya Black also offers a perspective on how consumers and businesses can use financial tools to thrive in both their lifestyles and their creative pursuits. That’s what makes this partnership unique.”

And it wasn’t just convenient for shoppers. For many merchants, it was their  first time using Maya Business, marking a big step in how small businesses are embracing digital tools. Beyond digital payments, Maya Business also equips SMEs with the tools to scale: from POS terminals and QR Ph payments to digital invoicing, online storefronts, and even access to business loans and working capital. By adopting Maya, SMEs operate with the same level of efficiency and professionalism as bigger businesses, without the hassle of traditional banking.

The partnership also introduced Purveyr’s merchants as part of the Maya Black Preferred program, giving them visibility within Maya’s network of forward-thinking businesses. At the fair, Maya Black cardholders enjoyed 5x Maya Miles at select merchants and even scored exclusive perks like a limited-edition merch. It was a way to not just shop local, but to earn more while backing independent creativity.

Outside the fair, the Maya Black Credit Card is designed for the experience-driven generation. Customers enjoy:

    • Up to 10x Maya Miles at Maya Black Preferred merchants nationwide
    • A 3,000-mile welcome bonus after spending PHP5,000 in the first 60 days
    • Global access through Visa, including entry to 1,300+ airport lounges
    • A sleek, numberless design with auto-refreshing CVV for next-level security—all managed fully in-app

It’s more than just a card, it’s a lifestyle companion. A coffee run can bring you closer to your next trip, while a weekend shopping spree unlocks exclusive access and rewards.

For Purveyr, teaming up with Maya wasn’t just about smoother transactions. It marked a bigger shift: Filipino creators and SMEs embracing digital tools that make their passions more sustainable, accessible, and rewarding. With Maya powering both the business and consumer sides of creativity, Filipino culture isn’t just being celebrated, it’s being supported and elevated for the future.

Digital work is changing the way Filipinos earn

Over the past decade, more Filipinos have moved away from traditional jobs and toward online income. The reasons are familiar: low local wages, job saturation, and the appeal of working from anywhere. But the shift isn’t just about convenience — it’s reshaping how people handle time, money, and risk.

Freelancing used to be a niche. Now it’s mainstream. Platforms like Upwork, Fiverr, and OnlineJobs.ph have opened the floodgates, bringing global work opportunities into barangays that never had them before. A laptop and a decent signal are often all it takes to start.

    Online doesn’t always mean stable

The freedom of digital work comes with volatility. No fixed salary. No health benefits. Payments in foreign currencies. And because most gigs are short-term, financial planning becomes guesswork.

Workers who once received bi-monthly paychecks now deal with scattered payments — USD10 here, USD30 there — often sent through Payoneer, Wise, or crypto wallets. The money is real, but the flow isn’t predictable.

That’s where habits start to shift. Instead of saving every peso, many start experimenting. Some buy gadgets. Some invest. Others explore online finance tools — and not all of those tools are built for safety.

    digital work

    A new type of risk

While freelancing platforms are usually secure, the ecosystem around them isn’t. Every freelancer eventually runs into unsolicited Telegram DMs, shady investment “apps,” or finance schemes promising fast returns.

Some look polished. Some even offer welcome bonuses. But most fall apart when it’s time to withdraw. The result? Weeks of labor gone in a single wrong click.

This is the darker side of remote work — not just burnout, but financial traps disguised as opportunity.

    The quiet appeal of regulation

No one starts out looking for regulators. It’s only after something breaks that people start paying attention to licenses, legal structures, and complaint channels.

That’s why phrases like regulated forex broker in the Philippines start to show up in discussions — not because freelancers are trading, but because they’ve been burned before. They want to make sure the next platform they use isn’t just flashy, but accountable.

Regulation doesn’t guarantee fairness. But in an environment where scams hide behind logos, it’s a filter — one of the few that still works.

Who needs regulation (and Who doesn’t)

Let’s break down some common digital platforms and their risk levels:

    Platform TypeRisk LevelNeeds Regulation?
    Freelance marketplacesLowOptional
    Payment gatewaysMediumYes
    Online investment toolsHighYes
    E-walletsMediumYes
    Task-based job appsLowOptional
    High-return “finance apps”Very HighAbsolutely

The rule of thumb? The more money flows through it — or the more promises it makes — the more it needs regulation.

Why so many platforms skip It

Getting regulated isn’t easy. It involves paperwork, audits, transparency. It also limits what a company can do with user funds. That’s why many shady platforms stay offshore — they can operate freely without oversight.

They target countries where awareness is low and enforcement is slow. Unfortunately, the Philippines fits that bill.

That’s why some “global” apps suddenly vanish without notice. No refunds. No support. Just a dead website and a long Telegram silence.

What people should look for — but don’t

Here’s what actually matters when using any online financial platform — and yet most people only check #1 and #5.

    • Regulatory license (from BSP, SEC, or foreign equivalent)
    • Clear terms of service (especially for withdrawals)
    • Human customer support
    • Public complaints or resolved cases
    • UI that feels smooth and “legit”

The last one is what most people go by — because it’s visible. But it’s the least reliable. Some of the worst scams look professionally designed.

Financial tools are becoming Lifestyle Apps

E-wallets now have gamified savings. Crypto apps offer “learn to earn” rewards. Investment platforms run giveaways on TikTok. The lines between financial tools and entertainment are fading fast.

For younger users especially, money doesn’t feel serious. It’s just another screen. And that’s exactly what some platforms want — casual users who won’t read the terms and won’t ask too many questions.

But the fallout isn’t casual. It’s real money. Sometimes entire savings.

Regulation is boring — until it isn’t

Most Filipinos don’t know which agencies regulate what. SEC? BSP? NTC? The alphabet soup is confusing. And scammers rely on that confusion.

But once someone gets burned, they start paying attention. Suddenly, they’re checking for small text in footers. Searching for license numbers. Asking others in forums what they’ve heard.

It’s not paranoia. It’s damage control.

    Why this matters beyond finance

Financial harm leads to lifestyle harm. Missed bills. Delayed tuition. Food cutbacks. In a country where most people don’t have emergency savings, losing PHP5,000 to an online scam isn’t just frustrating — it’s destabilizing.

That’s why discussions around “safe platforms” keep coming up, even in unrelated groups. Moms in parenting forums asking about payout apps. Students comparing finance tools. Gamers debating whether crypto play-to-earn games are real.

In all of these, trust is currency. And regulation, while invisible, is the backbone.

    The role of word-of-mouth

People don’t trust platforms — they trust people. If someone in a group says “I got paid, no issues,” that carries more weight than a whole landing page.

It’s why small platforms can go viral overnight — and vanish just as fast if things go wrong.

That’s also why once someone finds a stable app — whether for payments, savings, or small investments — they don’t switch. Stability is rare, and word-of-mouth is how it spreads.

A better filter for the future

In a perfect world, no one would need to google “is this legit?” before sending money online. But until then, basic habits help:

    • Look for regulation (even if it’s foreign)
    • Never trust DMs or cold messages
    • Assume bonuses have strings
    • Withdraw small amounts early to test
    • Don’t keep large balances in “new” apps
    • None of these are foolproof. But they shrink the target on your back.
