For many Filipino families, money sent from loved ones abroad is more than financial support—it is a lifeline and a symbol of connection across distances. With about 4.6 million Filipinos living in the United States, the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) is making it easier than ever for Filipinos abroad to send money, and for families back home to receive it quickly and securely, through BPI Remit.
“With BPI Remit, we make sending and receiving money between the U.S. and the Philippines faster, more secure, and more rewarding,” said Joel De Vera, BPI Institutional Banking’s Head of Strategy, Products & Support Group.
“As we anticipate our 175th anniversary next year, we remain committed to serving Filipino families and helping them feel closer to their loved ones abroad, no matter the distance,” De Vera added.
For remitters abroad
BPI Remit empowers Filipinos in the U.S. to do more for their families with convenience and peace of mind. Senders can transfer funds directly from a U.S. bank account to a BPI account in the Philippines through the BPI mobile app or online. Each transfer includes a fixed fee of just USD1 for amounts below USD250, and free of charge for transfers above USD250. Current transaction limits are USD700 daily and weekly, and USD1,000 monthly.
Funds are transferred within seconds, and users can easily track their transactions via the BPI app or online. SMS notifications are also sent to confirm when a transfer is initiated and completed, ensuring transparency and security.

For families in the Philippines
Families receiving remittances can instantly access funds through their BPI accounts, check balances via the BPI app or online, and enjoy competitive exchange rates that make the most of every dollar sent. The Bank continues to be a trusted bridge connecting overseas Filipinos and their loved ones in the Philippines.
Working with a strong network of remittance partners, BPI ensures that every transfer is seamless and secure, allowing families to focus on what truly matters: staying connected and building a better future together.
Canva has steadily grown from being a go-to design platform into a full creative suite aimed at simplifying how individuals and teams produce content. With the launch of Canva Visual Suite 2.0, the platform takes a bold step forward, combining familiar design tools with new AI-driven features, data handling, and even interactive code generation. The update is clearly positioned to serve not only designers but also marketers, educators, and publishers who need a balance of creativity and productivity in their daily work. In our organization, which shares the same visual and content-driven goals that Canva champions, we tested the new suite firsthand to see how well it actually delivers.
Canva Sheets
Starting with Canva Sheets, it feels like a breath of fresh air compared to traditional spreadsheet tools. With its prepared templates, the experience is design-first, perfect for creators who think visually. The interface is simplistic and not overwhelming, with plenty of templates suited for different industries. Customizing data is straightforward, and despite dealing with numbers, Sheets doesn’t feel overly “mathematical.” Everything is prepared for you, so productivity flows naturally.
The Magic Formula is especially impressive. If you’re someone who struggles to remember Excel formulas, this feature becomes your best friend. Not only does it generate the right formula, but it also shows the solution and provides explanations with a single click. It understands contextual prompts too like interpreting “a year” as 12 months or recognizing “dozen” instantly. It’s sensitive to rows, columns, and surrounding inputs, making calculations intuitive. Speed is solid, usually 2–4 seconds depending on prompt complexity. While Canva Sheets can’t handle massive datasets like Excel, it’s more design-focused and it excels in use cases like content planning, production calendars, or presenting analytics visually.
Magic Insights adds another layer, though it can sometimes hit technical snags. It often displayed “technical issue on our end” messages, disrupting workflow. At this stage, it feels more like a bonus tool than a reliable core feature. With more stability, though, it could become an invaluable assistant for editors and marketers who want quick storylines from raw data.
Magic Studio at Scale
Where Canva Visual Suite 2.0 truly shines at scale is with Magic Studio at Scale. For teams or publishers managing tons of assets, this is a game-changer. You can import data, remove image backgrounds in bulk, generate multiple content variations, translate designs into different languages, and even bulk-create designs directly from Sheets. The ability to resize multiple designs in one step is a massive timesaver. For a digital magazine, for example, this makes tasks like content calendars far more efficient. Imagine generating multiple versions of layouts for different devices or campaigns, and then resizing them across platforms instantly, eliminating the most repetitive parts of content production.
Canva AI & Code
Canva AI is another blessing for content creators. In our experience, the text-to-image tool has been especially helpful in building quick storyboards. Just by prompting the angle or scenario, Canva generates 3–5 variations we can choose from, often hitting exactly what we imagined. While occasional “AI hallucinations” happen, we’ve found that better, more detailed prompting leads to sharper results. What makes it even more user-friendly is the ability to choose or specify art styles directly in the prompt, which is a lifesaver for creators who aren’t experts in design or illustration. The option to adjust image sizes also shows Canva’s focus on real-world user needs.
AI-generated video, meanwhile, feels like a sneak peek into the future. For instance, when prompted “a robot thinking about flood”, Canva smartly rephrased it into “robot contemplating flood impact,” and the final output was both creative and relevant. After generating a video, Canva even suggests possible improvements or refinements you might want, which makes the process collaborative. The only trade-off is the generation time, which can last for a minute or more, but that’s understandable given the complexity of video rendering.
On the more technical side, Canva Code is one of the most exciting new features. Testing it with a prompt like “Make a digital bingo card filled with challenges for teenagers, with boxes that turn into red crosses when clicked”, Canva delivered exactly what we asked for. It’s surprisingly fast, and more importantly, it makes interactive, code-powered designs accessible to people who aren’t skilled programmers. The main limitation is that once the code is generated, you can’t directly tweak the source within Canva, you’ll need to adjust by rewriting prompts instead of manually editing text or styling. Still, it represents a powerful leap. Finally, a tool that bridges the gap between AI-assisted creativity and functional, interactive design.
Magic Charts
Magic Charts, meanwhile, feels like a big step forward for anyone who needs to turn raw data into something people actually want to look at. What makes it convenient is that Google Analytics, HubSpot, Google Sheets, and Statista are already built right into it, or simply upload your own file from your computer. We tried it with Statista’s data on “Facebook users in the Philippines between 2017 and 2030”. Canva initially recommended a stacked bar chart to present the data, which provided a brief overview of the trend. But what was impressive was the flexibility; we could easily switch the visualization into something more interactive, such as a packed circle chart. With that format, we could click on a circle by year, for example, 2025, and immediately view the precise user numbers. It wasn’t just a static graph, it was interactive, making the story behind the data much clearer.
Out of all the chart options, the infographic-style charts stood out the most. What we liked about them is how they are able to merge design and data so that the information is not only easy to follow but also more memorable. Rather than showing plain lines and bars, these graphs use visuals, icons, and layouts that highlight the meaning of the numbers. To us, this has more effect on an audience; people recall the story that the chart tells rather than the numbers that it displays. While Magic Charts won’t replace the advanced analytics tools, it’s ideal for reports or presentations where impact matters as much as accuracy.
Advanced Photo Editing
Canva’s Advanced Photo Editing is another feature that makes day-to-day design work much smoother. We tested it out on a photo of a dog, specifically removing a ball next to it, and the result was seamless; there were no obvious traces of the editing. The background blended seamlessly, making it look like the ball had never existed in the beginning. For a person accustomed to needing to make edits perfect in other programs, this was a huge time-saver and surprisingly professional in output.
We also tested Canva’s Magic Grab feature, which allows you to choose and drag objects or text within an image. The experience was smooth; we could grab an object without distorting the layout or “messing up” on the rest of the design. All of it adjusted together as if it were built to be that way from the beginning. The most impressive thing was how natural the results appeared, no weird gaps and no mismatched textures. For rapid but excellent edits, this feature alone makes Canva more than a design tool, it’s becoming a go-to option even for sophisticated photo adjustments.
Canva clearly understands this generation’s mindset: everything needs to be visually appealing, whether it is for personal expression on social media or for money-making content in the digital economy. In that sense, Canva understood the assignment, and its continuous innovation reflects how content creators today live, think, and work. Canva Visual Suite 2.0 is also an impressive step forward for everyday creators and teams. Its greatest strength is accessibility, making advanced tools like AI, interactivity, and data visualization approachable even for non-specialists. It allows creators to move quickly without sacrificing design quality, while also streamlining repetitive tasks that usually slow down content production. For teams producing content at scale, educators building presentations, or publishers looking to repurpose assets efficiently, the suite offers a practical, design-first alternative to more technical software. While heavy data work or advanced coding may still require specialized platforms, Canva is setting the tone for how creativity and productivity will continue to merge in the years ahead.

In a strong push toward sustainable mobility, the Department of Energy (DOE), in partnership with Petron Corporation and the country’s leading automotive players, launched the 2025 DOE-Petron Fuel Economy Run along the Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway (TPLEX). The initiative underscores government and industry’s united effort to equip Filipino motorists with credible benchmarks on fuel efficiency, reduce transport-related emissions, and accelerate the shift to cleaner, smarter, and more sustainable transport solutions.
Aligned with the Philippine Energy Plan, Republic Act (RA) No. 11285 or the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act and RA No. 11697 or the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act, the Fuel Economy Run underscores DOE’s strong commitment to policies that advance energy efficiency, sustainable transport, and energy security.
Sixty-eight vehicles, including internal combustion engines (ICE), hybrid (HEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and battery electric vehicles (BEV), participated in the event. Covering a 156-kilometer route designed to mirror real-world expressway driving conditions, the run provided credible benchmarks for motorists and manufacturers on vehicle fuel performance.
Dir. Patrick Aquino of the DOE Energy Utilization Management Bureau
“This isn’t a race. It’s a demonstration of how different vehicle technologies perform under actual driving conditions. Our focus is on providing credible fuel economy data, not on who finishes first. By testing vehicles under real-world driving conditions, we are guiding Filipino consumers that energy efficiency is both practical and attainable,” said Energy Secretary Sharon S. Garin.
Transport is one of the country’s most energy-intensive sectors, accounting for 34% of total energy consumption. The results of this activity may serve as a benchmark for government agencies and local government units in procuring efficient fleet vehicles, in support of the government’s accelerated campaign under the Government Energy Management Program (GEMP). By shifting to more efficient vehicles and fuels, we can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, lessen dependence on imported fuel, and improve air quality for future generations.
To ensure fairness, all ICE and hybrid vehicles used Petron XCS premium gasoline and Petron Turbo Diesel, while BEVs and PHEVs were supported by Petron EV charging stations and AC Mobility’s mobile chargers. Results of the run will be published on the DOE website to serve as a practical reference for consumers and the automotive industry.
The 2025 Fuel Economy Run was made possible through the strong collaboration of Petron Corporation, SMC Infrastructure, AC Mobility, the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines (CAMPI), and the Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines (EVAP).
“This is a true demonstration of the Bagong Pilipinas spirit where government, industry, and consumers unite to achieve energy security, environmental sustainability, and economic efficiency for the benefit of all Filipinos,” Secretary Garin added.
Globe has launched a new SMS Scam Shield feature on the GlobeOne app to help protect users from the growing threat of text-based phishing attacks, particularly those sent through spoofed Globe or GCash sender IDs. The feature, currently available to Android users, is Globe’s latest move in bolstering customer security in the face of increasingly sophisticated fraud tactics.
Spoofing and phishing scams often disguise themselves as legitimate messages, frequently from trusted sources such as Globe, GCash, or banks, in an attempt to trick users into clicking on malicious links or revealing personal information. These types of scams have surged in recent years, particularly those generated by rogue devices known as IMSI catchers, which mimic cell towers.
“SMS Scam Shield is our way of giving customers more control and peace of mind. With this built-in protection, users are alerted via the GlobeOne app when they receive suspicious messages that may contain dangerous links or impersonate Globe-affiliated brands,” said Coco Domingo, Globe product experience vice president.
Once activated on the GlobeOne app, SMS Scam Shield scans messages locally on the user’s device, ensuring privacy, and alerts users with a push notification if a message is suspected to be a scam. The system also helps detect fake sender names, such as “GLOBE,” “GLOBEREWARD,” or “GCASH,” and flags messages containing phishing links.
To date, over 34,000 GlobeOne users have enabled the feature. Since rollout, the system has already identified more than 13,000 phishing messages, just weeks into its launch.
Globe subscribers can activate and use SMS Scam Shield for free within the GlobeOne app. Once permissions are granted, the app automatically starts protecting the user from fraudulent messages. For those concerned about privacy, Globe emphasized that it does not read or store SMS messages, the scam shield runs entirely on-device and only collects harmful links to strengthen the system’s defenses.
The feature also supports community reporting through https://www.globe.com.ph/stop-spam, encouraging users to report scams and contribute to wider link blacklisting.
SMS Scam Shield is part of Globe’s broader commitment to building a safer digital experience for Filipinos. It complements the company’s other cybersecurity efforts and serves as an early step toward integrating more AI-powered threat detection and protection across its platforms.
“Security shouldn’t be an afterthought; it should be seamless. This is just the beginning of more proactive tools we’re building into our digital services,” added Domingo.
Globe encourages all Android users to activate the feature through their GlobeOne app and take an active role in protecting themselves against SMS scams. To activate in the GlobeOne app, select “Profile” followed by Security Settings”.

Buying a car is a significant financial decision. You might think all you need to do is save up for a downpayment and be qualified for a car loan, but the journey doesn’t end with the purchase price. Many first-time car buyers are surprised by the additional and recurring expenses of car ownership, and it will do you well to be familiar with them to ensure that you’re financially prepared for your car ownership journey.
Here’s a breakdown of the costs of car ownership to factor into your budget:
Fuel: The most major recurring expense. Your fuel consumption will depend on your car’s engine type and your driving habits. Naturally, if you’re always out and about and taking your car, you will need to refuel/recharge more frequently.
Preventive Maintenance Service (PMS) and repairs: The second major recurring expense, and often one of the highest annual costs, is car maintenance. Regular maintenance is essential for keeping your car in good condition; you don’t want to get stuck on the road with a broken-down vehicle. New cars usually come with a warranty and free service for the first few thousand kilometers, but you will need to budget for future check-ups, oil changes, and potential repairs once the warranty expires.
Insurance: Car insurance is a legal requirement and an essential protection against accidents and theft. Premiums can vary greatly depending on the car’s value, age, and your driving history.
Registration fees: You’ll need to pay an annual registration fee to the Land Transportation Office (LTO). This fee is based on the car’s value and can also include costs for emissions testing.
Other fees: Don’t forget to budget for additional expenses, such as toll fees, parking fees, and car wash or detailing services, all of which are recurring costs.
Once you’re ready to take the next step in your car purchasing journey, Metrobank is here to support you – complete with exclusive offers such as waived fees, low rates, and free insurance.
Metrobank recently introduced its Happy Holideals promo, which makes owning a car more affordable. The offers included:
Waived Fees: Save up to PHP100,000 on fees, including Security Interest, Registration Fee, Documentary Stamp Tax (DST), and Notarial Fee.
Competitively Low Rates: Car loan interest rates can be as low as 8.70% p.a., to make it easier on your monthly budget.
Bonus Gift: Free car insurance from AXA Philippines for the first year of the loan.
You can enjoy these perks when you apply for a car loan before October 15, 2025. Clients can conveniently apply online through https://mcola.metrobank.com.ph/car-loan or visit the nearest Metrobank branch.

The Mapúa Education Group Co-Intelligence AI Strategy is a holistic and comprehensive initiative designed to cultivate a future-ready ecosystem of learning, including students, professors, and employees. Through the valuable integration of AI literacy, real-world experiences, and industry-recognized credentials into every aspect of the Mapúa programs, the graduates will be equipped to thrive and lead in a highly innovative and rapidly changing world.
With AI literacy as the highlight of Co-Intelligence, strategic initiatives were set to ensure comprehensive and effective AI integration in the institution. Among these initiatives include AI-infused Curriculum, which incorporates AI in every aspect of curriculum design including learning objectives, activities, and assessments to enhance the learning experience of students and improve critical real-life skills. The project also implemented embedded AI courses to equip students across all courses with essential AI and critical thinking skills to enable them to apply AI technologies across various disciplines.
To ensure that these innovative programs are effectively taught, the Co-Intelligence strategy also includes AI-focused professional development. Through this, upskilling programs centered on AI technologies and a formal education on AI were offered to faculty, staff, and professionals outside the university to gain in-depth knowledge about it.
Beyond the classroom, another significant component of the initiative is Long-Term Experiential Learning and Academically-Linked Work Learning which engages students in projects and professional experiences that empower them to apply their knowledge in real life with AI technologies.
Mapúa Education Group’s Co-Intelligence also has robust programs in place to promote critical thinking and judgment, ethical and responsible AI use, as well as human-centricity, emotional intelligence and creativity. This ensures that the Mapúa community is fully equipped to not just use AI, but to also critically evaluate its output and advocate for its responsible use and human-centric application.
Consistent with its Co-Intelligence strategy, the Mapúa Education Group is championing AI through various implementations. At Mapúa MCM, its AI initiative called MyPÚAserves as a one-stop digital companion through its Exam Reviewer with AI Tutor feature, which generates practice exams and evaluates student performance as well as uses AI to analyze test results.
In addition, the Mapúa MCL campus is utilizing The PathBuilder, an AI-powered platform that personalizes learning paths and customizes content to align with a student’s interests and goals, which is seen as a solution to increased engagement, improved knowledge retention and accelerated skill development. Online learning with MMDC is also made more convenient through student services such as the MMDC Learner’s Assistant, a high-powered AI assistant that delivers fast, efficient and always-on support to students.
Pioneering the Future with the Philippines’ First BS AI Engineering
The B.S. in AI Engineering program, a first of its kind in the Philippines, is initially available at the Mapúa University School of Electrical, Electronics, and Computer Engineering in Manila.
The B.S. in AI Engineering program will cover machine learning and Deep Learning Architectures, while also offering training in robotics, natural language processing (NLP), and applied skills in AI development. The program is also designed to incorporate ethical, social, and environmental concerns.
“It is the first dedicated AI engineering degree in the Philippines. It is designed with reference to the Philippine Skills Framework for Analytics and AI to address the growing demands for AI engineers across sectors. We have core courses, but some applied AI projects that we’re thinking about right now are engaged in real-world projects addressing Philippine challenges like disaster response AI systems, agricultural yield optimization, healthcare diagnostics for underserved areas, and local language processing tools,” Dr. Arnold Paglinawan, Mapúa University dean of the School of Electrical, Electronics, and Computer Engineering, said.
“The way forward for our students is to be the first generation of AI native engineers, for the industry to partner with us to shape the AI workforce of tomorrow, and for the nation to position the Philippines as a hub for ethical and inclusive AI innovation. With a century of engineering excellence and decades of computing expertise behind it, Mapúa University is not simply opening a new degree program. It is building the future of AI engineering in the Philippines—one student at a time. The future belongs to those who prepare for it today. Join us in building tomorrow,” Paglinawan declared.
During the launch, Paglinawan also cited exciting career opportunities for those who would pursue the degree. With this program, opportunities in AI-focused professions abound including AI Engineer, Machine Learning Engineer, Business Intelligence Developer, as well as career options including becoming a Research Scientist, AI Solutions Architect, Data Engineer and more.
Future-Proofing Careers Through AI-Powered Learning
The event also featured a discussion on AI and its impact on the contemporary work landscape with guest speaker Rowena Subido, first senior vice president and head of RCBC Human Resources Group, sharing her insights about it. Subido also addressed the fears of jobs being replaced by AI.
“A major proportion of the Philippine workforce will experience a shift in skills for their role. As a result of AI, 52% of professionals in the Philippines are in roles that will likely be disrupted or augmented by AI. [However,] AI will only replace your job if you do not have skills. If you do not have the skills, then upskill, reskill, and retool—those are the key things,” Subido noted.
“There are new jobs, new titles, and new skills that we need to develop [because of AI]. That’s why I’m very happy to really hear about the BS AI Engineering course because that would help the corporations identify the right talent rather than the corporations training them. At least the schools, like Mapúa, will be able to prepare accurately and patiently,” she added.
Mapúa embracing AI demonstrates its commitment to empowering its students with a new skill set for its graduates to experience accelerated career growth and to bridge the skills gap in the modern industries. The Mapúa Education Group Co-Intelligence Strategy is a testament to the group’s vision to utilize AI as a tool that complements human capabilities and to advocate AI literacy to fully equip and empower the Mapúa Education Group’s staff, students, and graduates.

Fresh from being recognized with the Philippines Technology Excellence Award for AI-Transportation at the Asian Technology Excellence Awards 2025, inDrive is doubling down on its mission to prove that artificial intelligence can be harnessed to empower people, not replace them. The award is a direct testament to inDrive’s commitment in actively reshaping Filipinos’ experience with urban mobility, thanks to their innovations anchored on fairness, transparency, and inclusivity.
inDrive demonstrated how its human-centric AI strategy is creating more equitable transport solutions in fast-growing markets like the Philippines, where millions rely daily on affordable and reliable rides.
“We are deeply honored to receive the Technology Excellence Award for AI–Transportation,” said Mark Tolley, APAC director, inDrive. “This recognition is not just about inDrive’s technology, it’s about the people behind every innovation and to whom it was made for. This inspires us to improve our services and to use AI to amplify user autonomy, ensure fairness, and create safer, more transparent experiences for both our passengers and partner drivers.”
Human-centered AI for a fair and efficient mobility solution
In the Philippines, where commuters are highly sensitive to fare cost and transparency, inDrive’s human-centric AI model is especially powerful. Instead of setting rigid prices, it provides better order matching, fair regulations in consideration of the government-mandated matrix, and route optimizations, all while leaving the final decision in the users’ hands.
inDrive also utilizes AI to power the other features on the app that directly improve everyday use, such as:
Photo-control systems using machine vision to verify vehicle safety and condition.
AI-assisted routing of support queries, helping passengers and drivers resolve issues faster.
Predictive demand algorithms to ensure drivers are in the right place at the right time.
More accurate ETAs and traffic-sensitive route predictions in congested cities like Metro Manila and Cebu.
Breaking language barriers and reinforcing safety through AI
With so many languages and dialects spoken across the Philippines, miscommunication is commonplace between passengers and inDrive’s partner drivers. With inDrive’s integration of Gemini AI in the app, instant context-aware translations in chats are enabled. The modern LLM-powered auto translation system handles typos, slang, and informal phrasing in English, Tagalog, Cebuano, and other dialects. Since its rollout, Filipino passengers and partner drivers have reported better booking rates and fewer miscommunications on ride details.
“To many, AI is a strong tool to improve efficiency. At inDrive Philippines, we see it as a driver of fairness and opportunity. This recognition underscores our commitment to making transportation and mobility more accessible and fairer to all,” shares Sofia Guinto, business development head at inDrive Philippines. “As inDrive continues to grow in the country, trust that we will create better solutions that will make mobility more reliable, inclusive, and smarter for Filipinos,” she added.
AI moderation systems are also used to scan booking notes, ride messages, and shared media for inappropriate behavior. In the Philippines, this system has singlehandedly reduced misuse of ride instructions by over threefold within three months, creating a safer digital space for commuters and drivers alike.
These demonstrate that profit need not come at the expense of fairness; instead, AI can serve as an equalizer by expanding access, empowering drivers, and protecting passengers.
Collaboration and growth
The demand for better and more reliable mobility solutions in the Philippines continues to grow and integrating new technologies such as AI is essential to achieve success. However, service is more than automation but enabling Filipinos with the freedom to choose, ensuring safety and building trust through time.
“Technology is often seen as cold and impersonal,” Tolley emphasized. “But at inDrive, we see AI as a tool to restore trust, strengthen communities, and make everyday journeys more humane. The Philippines is proof that technology, when guided by fairness, can transform mobility for millions.”
Recently, inDrive was also recognized as the Preferred Ride-Hailing Partner of Echelon Philippines 2025, signaling inDrive’s intention to build stronger ties with fintech players, mobility tech innovators, and policymakers.
Currently, inDrive offers its ride-hailing services in the Philippines. The company is looking at bringing its Superapp services to the country, including its courier services and online groceries.

In the Philippines today, amid a steady tide of exposés on corruption and misuse of public funds, nothing reflects on the country’s priorities more starkly than the national budget. Recently this year, as floods devastated provinces, the lack of adequate disaster response revealed the cost of misplaced allocations. This failure is not confined to disaster response; it extends to the broader question of national growth, where funds meant to strengthen agriculture, education, health, and infrastructure are too often compromised, leaving entire sectors of the economy vulnerable. It is against this backdrop that the 2026 Proposed National Budget must be examined, not merely as a set of numbers, but as a test of whether public funds will finally serve the people they are meant to protect.
Deconstructing the Numbers, Telling Our Stories
This is the mission of “Deconstruct V: The People’s Purse: Examining the 2026 Proposed National Budget”, the fifth installment of the University of the Philippines Los Baños Economics Society’s (ECONSOC) award-winning seminar series. Since 2023, Deconstruct has examined critical issues, from food security to educational reform, by translating technical policy debates into human stories. This year, the spotlight turns to the 2026 budget: its allocations, trade-offs, and real implications for ordinary Filipinos.
On September 29, 2025, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., the discussion will take place at the University of the Philippines Los Baños, with livestreams via Zoom and Facebook, featuringDr. Jan Carlo “JC” Punongbayan, Mr. Christian Dy, Mr. AJ Montesa, and Mr. Sonny Africa.
Join the Dialogue
At a time when every Filipino is asking where public funds truly flow, conversations on the national budget have never been more urgent. Whether you are a student, a professional, or an engaged citizen, your voice matters in shaping how government priorities are understood and held accountable. Deconstruct V offers a space of reflection and exchange, where figures are humanized and policies are weighed against lived realities.
We also extend our sincere gratitude to Gadgets Magazinefor helping bring this initiative to a wider public and opening doors for dialogue and awareness. This partnership strengthens our call for transparency and meaningful participation in our democracy.

Grab marked the first year of GrabTrike in Zamboanga by expanding its flagship public-private initiative “Grab Asenso: A Digital Diskarte Program” in the city, underscoring the role of digital tools and upskilling in modernizing one of the city’s traditional transport sectors.
The initiative, supported by the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and partner local government units, aims to co-build an inclusive digital economy in the regions by giving MSMEs and traditional transport providers the tools and skills to compete more effectively in a rapidly digitizing marketplace.
In just a year, GrabTrike has shown clear gains for drivers’ livelihoods by efficiently providing additional earnings to their street-hail trips with in-app bookings. Highly active GrabTrike drivers and TODA leaders say the service has proven to be an effective“dagdag kita” to their regular street-hail, with daily completed rides and take-home pay rising by an average of twofold.
Grab Philippines country marketing head and director for cities J-anne Aruta shares: “Tricycles have long been the backbone of local transport in our communities. With Grab Asenso, we are ensuring that we are equipping them with the tools, skills, and safeguards so that they, too, can thrive in the digital economy. In doing so, we also raise the standard of safe, reliable transport for the riding public.”
Grab Asenso: A Digital Diskarte Program for Everyday Entrepreneurs
As part of the launch, tricycle drivers who had long been waiting to join GrabTrike but lacked access to a smartphone were finally onboarded — receiving brand-new units alongside highly active pioneering GrabTrike drivers whose devices were already worn out.
Grab provided brand-new smartphones to qualified tricycle drivers who had met all requirements except having a device
The launch included a Grab Asenso Learning Session, equipping drivers with modules on road safety, passenger handling, and the use of in-app safety features such as Share Your Ride, Trip Monitoring, and the Emergency SOS button. The program combines device access with practical digital skills, aiming to embed safety, accountability, and professional servicing into day-to-day operations.
DICT Region IX Director Cheryl Ortega framed the rollout in the context of national priorities, which she underscored as central to DICT’s goal of creating 8 million digital jobs nationwide. Ortega commended Grab for donating mobile phones “which is crucial in empowering drivers and partners to work more effectively and safely in today’s digital economy.” She added: “We stand behind this effort as it reflects our direction underSecretary Henry Aguda to ensure that no Filipino is left behind. Sa digital bayanihan, walang Pilipino ang maiiwan sa Bagong Pilipinas.” Programs like Grab Asenso, she pointed out, complement DICT’s work in building a more inclusive and sustainable digital ecosystem for all.
Mayor Khymer Adan Olaso, for his part, welcomed GrabTrike’s first-year milestone in Zamboanga. “Digitalization — in this case through the GrabTrike — truly solves many of the challenges on the part of tricycles, the government and the commuting public. Not only does it promote accountability, it also strengthens safety and security and ultimately creates trust with each other and thus promotes a stronger community in Zamboanga,” the mayor said through Rosendo Castillo, a representative from his executive team.
GrabTrike Zamboanga pioneer driver Mark Anthony Balasabas shared that app-based bookings increase his daily trips by around twofold, depending on his total online hours.
One year on, Grab Asenso via GrabTrike has proven to be the most practical digital diskarte for Zamboanga’s tricycle drivers: additional earnings, safer rides, and digitalized livelihoods for those at the frontline of the country’s transport network.
The Ber months have arrived, bringing with them the excitement of reunions, festive celebrations, and long-awaited getaways. It’s the time of year when families come together, friends reconnect, and many Filipinos look forward to a well-deserved break after a busy year. According to Visa’s latest Green Shoots Radar Survey, December is the busiest month for both domestic and overseas leisure travel for Filipinos, accounting for 36% and 20% respectively of trips as people take the opportunity to relax and spend quality time with loved ones.
In fact, more Filipinos travel during December than the regional Asia Pacific average, with only 22% across Asia Pacific traveling domestically and only 20% traveling internationally during December.
As travel picks up, the survey also showed that more Filipinos are paying closer attention to how they manage their journeys. Beyond choosing destinations, they are looking at how they spend—from using cards to making the most out of digital options like QR codes. The goal is simple: to travel with ease, enjoy more, and worry less.
To get the best out of the season, here are Visa’s smart spending moves for a worry-free Ber month getaway:
Swipe Smart, Travel Smart
According to Visa’s survey, nearly half of Filipino travelers (49%) prefer credit cards when abroad, thanks to their wide acceptance and security. Beyond peace of mind, you can also enjoy rewards, promos, and installment offers, stretching your holiday budget further.
Use your Visa card for big-ticket expenses like flights, hotels, and shopping. This holiday season, putting your purchases on your Visa card also means less time worrying about carrying large amounts of cash and more time enjoying the moments that matter. From exclusive perks to purchase protection, your card acts as both a payment tool and a travel companion.
Don’t Fumble for Change—Just Scan
More than half of Filipinos, or 59%, know they can now use QR code payments abroad. With Visa-enabled e-wallets and banking apps, paying for travel purchases becomes faster, safer, and more convenient. From grabbing coffee in Seoul to buying pasalubong in Singapore, a quick scan saves you from handling loose change.
Beyond convenience, it’s also a way to keep up with how payments are evolving globally. More destinations are embracing QR payments for their speed and simplicity, allowing travelers to move with confidence through crowded shops, bustling markets, and festive holiday events.
Plan Your Budget and Track Your Spending
The top overseas destinations for Filipinos are Japan (37%), followed by Singapore (20%), and South Korea and Hong Kong (19% each). Each of these hotspots has its own spending patterns – from essentials like transport passes and convenience stores, to shopping and dining experiences.
A simple way to stay on track is to plan your budget per destination before flying out. Allocate a portion of your holiday funds for each stop, and use your Visa card to cover the essentials like transport, meals, and must-have purchases. This helps you track your spending through your card’s purchase records and see if you still have extra funds for other finds, whether that’s anime collectibles in Tokyo, skincare in Seoul, or pasalubong from Hong Kong.
Prioritize Moments, Not Money Worries
For many Filipinos, traveling during the Ber months is more than just sightseeing, but a chance to reunite with family and friends, take a well-deserved break, and seek thrill and enjoyment. In fact, 43% of Filipinos say visiting loved ones is their top reason for traveling overseas, while 29% say they travel for relaxation. Close to a third, or 28%, of Filipinos travel to visit a theme park – the highest in the region. With Visa’s secure and widely accepted payment options, you can focus on the joy of these reunions and festivities without the added stress of managing how to pay.
When you no longer have to think about juggling cash or complicated payments, you can be more present in the moments that truly matter. That’s what the Ber months are all about – spending less energy on logistics and more on the connections that make the season special.
“Filipinos are becoming more intentional about how they travel, not only in where they go but in how they pay,” said Jeffrey Navarro, country manager for Visa in the Philippines. “This holiday season, Visa is here to make every trip simpler and more secure, so travelers can spend with confidence and focus on making memories that matter most.”
The Ber months are a reminder that travel and spending are not just about transactions, but about the experiences they enable. From long-awaited reunions to simple moments of joy, this season is a chance to pause and celebrate what matters most. With Visa, Filipinos can step into these occasions with confidence, knowing their payments are secure and seamless—leaving them free to enjoy the season’s celebrations with ease.
