The Mapúa Education Group is redefining the future of education with the groundbreaking launch of its Co-Intelligence AI (Artificial Intelligence) Strategy, a forward-thinking initiative to empower students, faculty, and employees to thrive in a world where human creativity and critical thinking integrate seamlessly with artificial intelligence. The event also served as a platform to announce that Mapúa University is pioneering the B.S. in AI Engineering course in the Philippines.

The event was held at the Mapúa University campus in Makati City, led by Mapúa University president and CEO Dr. Dodjie S. Maestrecampo. Also in attendance were key officials from Mapúa Education Group, consisting of Mapúa University, Mapúa Malayan Colleges Laguna (Mapúa MCL), Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao (Mapúa MCM), and Mapúa Malayan Digital College (MMDC).

“AI is no longer optional. It is reshaping industries, redefining skills, and reimagining learning. This is why today we are formally launching the Mapua Education Group’s Co-Intelligence Strategy. It is our collective response to this transformation and that is to be done through Co-Intelligence. In this, we will learn with AI using AI tools to enhance teaching and learning; we will learn about AI, embedding AI literacy and critical thinking skills across every program; and we will work with AI, equipping our faculty members, staff, and professionals with AI tools to use in teaching, research, and operations,” Maestrecampo remarked.

The Mapúa Education Group Co-Intelligence AI Strategy is a holistic and comprehensive initiative designed to cultivate a future-ready ecosystem of learning, including students, professors, and employees. Through the valuable integration of AI literacy, real-world experiences, and industry-recognized credentials into every aspect of the Mapúa programs, the graduates will be equipped to thrive and lead in a highly innovative and rapidly changing world.

With AI literacy as the highlight of Co-Intelligence, strategic initiatives were set to ensure comprehensive and effective AI integration in the institution. Among these initiatives include AI-infused Curriculum, which incorporates AI in every aspect of curriculum design including learning objectives, activities, and assessments to enhance the learning experience of students and improve critical real-life skills. The project also implemented embedded AI courses to equip students across all courses with essential AI and critical thinking skills to enable them to apply AI technologies across various disciplines.

To ensure that these innovative programs are effectively taught, the Co-Intelligence strategy also includes AI-focused professional development. Through this, upskilling programs centered on AI technologies and a formal education on AI were offered to faculty, staff, and professionals outside the university to gain in-depth knowledge about it.

Beyond the classroom, another significant component of the initiative is Long-Term Experiential Learning and Academically-Linked Work Learning which engages students in projects and professional experiences that empower them to apply their knowledge in real life with AI technologies.

Mapúa Education Group’s Co-Intelligence also has robust programs in place to promote critical thinking and judgment, ethical and responsible AI use, as well as human-centricity, emotional intelligence and creativity. This ensures that the Mapúa   community is fully equipped to not just use AI, but to also critically evaluate its output and advocate for its responsible use and human-centric application.

Consistent with its Co-Intelligence strategy, the Mapúa Education Group is championing AI through various implementations. At Mapúa MCM, its AI initiative called MyPÚA serves as a one-stop digital companion through its Exam Reviewer with AI Tutor feature, which generates practice exams and evaluates student performance as well as uses AI to analyze test results.

In addition, the Mapúa MCL campus is utilizing The PathBuilder, an AI-powered platform that personalizes learning paths and customizes content to align with a student’s interests and goals, which is seen as a solution to increased engagement, improved knowledge retention and accelerated skill development. Online learning with MMDC is also made more convenient through student services such as the MMDC Learner’s Assistant, a high-powered AI assistant that delivers fast, efficient and always-on support to students.

Pioneering the Future with the Philippines’ First BS AI Engineering

The B.S. in AI Engineering program, a first of its kind in the Philippines, is initially available at the Mapúa University School of Electrical, Electronics, and Computer Engineering in Manila.

The B.S. in AI Engineering program will cover machine learning and Deep Learning Architectures, while also offering training in robotics, natural language processing (NLP), and applied skills in AI development. The program is also designed to incorporate ethical, social, and environmental concerns.

“It is the first dedicated AI engineering degree in the Philippines. It is designed with reference to the Philippine Skills Framework for Analytics and AI to address the growing demands for AI engineers across sectors. We have core courses, but some applied AI projects that we’re thinking about right now are engaged in real-world projects addressing Philippine challenges like disaster response AI systems, agricultural yield optimization, healthcare diagnostics for underserved areas, and local language processing tools,” Dr. Arnold Paglinawan, Mapúa University dean of the School of Electrical, Electronics, and Computer Engineering, said.

“The way forward for our students is to be the first generation of AI native engineers, for the industry to partner with us to shape the AI workforce of tomorrow, and for the nation to position the Philippines as a hub for ethical and inclusive AI innovation. With a century of engineering excellence and decades of computing expertise behind it, Mapúa University is not simply opening a new degree program. It is building the future of AI engineering in the Philippines—one student at a time. The future belongs to those who prepare for it today. Join us in building tomorrow,” Paglinawan declared.

During the launch, Paglinawan also cited exciting career opportunities for those who would pursue the degree. With this program, opportunities in AI-focused professions abound including AI Engineer, Machine Learning Engineer, Business Intelligence Developer, as well as career options including becoming a Research Scientist, AI Solutions Architect, Data Engineer and more.

    Future-Proofing Careers Through AI-Powered Learning

The event also featured a discussion on AI and its impact on the contemporary work landscape with guest speaker Rowena Subido, first senior vice president and head of RCBC Human Resources Group, sharing her insights about it. Subido also addressed the fears of jobs being replaced by AI.

“A major proportion of the Philippine workforce will experience a shift in skills for their role. As a result of AI, 52% of professionals in the Philippines are in roles that will likely be disrupted or augmented by AI. [However,] AI will only replace your job if you do not have skills. If you do not have the skills, then upskill, reskill, and retool—those are the key things,” Subido noted.

“There are new jobs, new titles, and new skills that we need to develop [because of AI]. That’s why I’m very happy to really hear about the BS AI Engineering course because that would help the corporations identify the right talent rather than the corporations training them. At least the schools, like Mapúa, will be able to prepare accurately and patiently,” she added.

Mapúa embracing AI demonstrates its commitment to empowering its students with a new skill set for its graduates to experience accelerated career growth and to bridge the skills gap in the modern industries. The Mapúa Education Group Co-Intelligence Strategy is a testament to the group’s vision to utilize AI as a tool that complements human capabilities and to advocate AI literacy to fully equip and empower the Mapúa Education Group’s staff, students, and graduates.

inDrive recognized for AI in Transportation at the Asian Technology Awards 2025

Fresh from being recognized with the Philippines Technology Excellence Award for AI-Transportation at the Asian Technology Excellence Awards 2025, inDrive is doubling down on its mission to prove that artificial intelligence can be harnessed to empower people, not replace them. The award is a direct testament to inDrive’s commitment in actively reshaping Filipinos’ experience with urban mobility, thanks to their innovations anchored on fairness, transparency, and inclusivity.

inDrive demonstrated how its human-centric AI strategy is creating more equitable transport solutions in fast-growing markets like the Philippines, where millions rely daily on affordable and reliable rides.

“We are deeply honored to receive the Technology Excellence Award for AI–Transportation,” said Mark Tolley, APAC director, inDrive. “This recognition is not just about inDrive’s technology, it’s about the people behind every innovation and to whom it was made for. This inspires us to improve our services and to use AI to amplify user autonomy, ensure fairness, and create safer, more transparent experiences for both our passengers and partner drivers.”

Human-centered AI for a fair and efficient mobility solution

    inDrive

In the Philippines, where commuters are highly sensitive to fare cost and transparency, inDrive’s human-centric AI model is especially powerful. Instead of setting rigid prices, it provides better order matching, fair regulations in consideration of the government-mandated matrix, and route optimizations, all while leaving the final decision in the users’ hands.

inDrive also utilizes AI to power the other features on the app that directly improve everyday use, such as:

    • Photo-control systems using machine vision to verify vehicle safety and condition.
    • AI-assisted routing of support queries, helping passengers and drivers resolve issues faster.
    • Predictive demand algorithms to ensure drivers are in the right place at the right time.
    • More accurate ETAs and traffic-sensitive route predictions in congested cities like Metro Manila and Cebu.

Breaking language barriers and reinforcing safety through AI

With so many languages and dialects spoken across the Philippines, miscommunication is commonplace between passengers and inDrive’s partner drivers. With inDrive’s integration of Gemini AI in the app, instant context-aware translations in chats are enabled. The modern LLM-powered auto translation system handles typos, slang, and informal phrasing in English, Tagalog, Cebuano, and other dialects. Since its rollout, Filipino passengers and partner drivers have reported better booking rates and fewer miscommunications on ride details.

“To many, AI is a strong tool to improve efficiency. At inDrive Philippines, we see it as a driver of fairness and opportunity. This recognition underscores our commitment to making transportation and mobility more accessible and fairer to all,” shares Sofia Guinto, business development head at inDrive Philippines. “As inDrive continues to grow in the country, trust that we will create better solutions that will make mobility more reliable, inclusive, and smarter for Filipinos,” she added.

AI moderation systems are also used to scan booking notes, ride messages, and shared media for inappropriate behavior. In the Philippines, this system has singlehandedly reduced misuse of ride instructions by over threefold within three months, creating a safer digital space for commuters and drivers alike.

These demonstrate that profit need not come at the expense of fairness; instead, AI can serve as an equalizer by expanding access, empowering drivers, and protecting passengers.

    Collaboration and growth

The demand for better and more reliable mobility solutions in the Philippines continues to grow and integrating new technologies such as AI is essential to achieve success. However, service is more than automation but enabling Filipinos with the freedom to choose, ensuring safety and building trust through time.

“Technology is often seen as cold and impersonal,” Tolley emphasized. “But at inDrive, we see AI as a tool to restore trust, strengthen communities, and make everyday journeys more humane. The Philippines is proof that technology, when guided by fairness, can transform mobility for millions.”

Recently, inDrive was also recognized as the Preferred Ride-Hailing Partner of Echelon Philippines 2025, signaling inDrive’s intention to build stronger ties with fintech players, mobility tech innovators, and policymakers.

Currently, inDrive offers its ride-hailing services in the Philippines. The company is looking at bringing its Superapp services to the country, including its courier services and online groceries.

Deconstruct V – The people’s purse: Examining the 2026 national budget

In the Philippines today, amid a steady tide of exposés on corruption and misuse of public funds, nothing reflects on the country’s priorities more starkly than the national budget. Recently this year, as floods devastated provinces, the lack of adequate disaster response revealed the cost of misplaced allocations. This failure is not confined to disaster response; it extends to the broader question of national growth, where funds meant to strengthen agriculture, education, health, and infrastructure are too often compromised, leaving entire sectors of the economy vulnerable. It is against this backdrop that the 2026 Proposed National Budget must be examined, not merely as a set of numbers, but as a test of whether public funds will finally serve the people they are meant to protect.

Deconstructing the Numbers, Telling Our Stories

This is the mission of “Deconstruct V: The People’s Purse: Examining the 2026 Proposed National Budget”, the fifth installment of the University of the Philippines Los Baños Economics Society’s  (ECONSOC) award-winning seminar series. Since 2023, Deconstruct has examined critical issues, from food security to educational reform, by translating technical policy debates into human stories. This year, the spotlight turns to the 2026 budget: its allocations, trade-offs, and real implications for ordinary Filipinos.

On September 29, 2025, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., the discussion will take place at the University of the Philippines Los Baños, with livestreams via Zoom and Facebook, featuring Dr. Jan Carlo “JC” Punongbayan, Mr. Christian Dy, Mr. AJ Montesa, and Mr. Sonny Africa.

    Join the Dialogue

At a time when every Filipino is asking where public funds truly flow, conversations on the national budget have never been more urgent. Whether you are a student, a professional, or an engaged citizen, your voice matters in shaping how government priorities are understood and held accountable. Deconstruct V offers a space of reflection and exchange, where figures are humanized and policies are weighed against lived realities.

We also extend our sincere gratitude to Gadgets Magazine for helping bring this initiative to a wider public and opening doors for dialogue and awareness. This partnership strengthens our call for transparency and meaningful participation in our democracy.

Grab, Zamboanga LGU, TODAs boost trike program through Grab Asenso

Grab marked the first year of GrabTrike in Zamboanga by expanding its flagship public-private initiative “Grab Asenso: A Digital Diskarte Program” in the city, underscoring the role of digital tools and upskilling in modernizing one of the city’s traditional transport sectors.

The initiative, supported by the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and partner local government units, aims to co-build an inclusive digital economy in the regions by giving MSMEs and traditional transport providers the tools and skills to compete more effectively in a rapidly digitizing marketplace.

In just a year, GrabTrike has shown clear gains for drivers’ livelihoods by efficiently providing additional earnings to their street-hail trips with in-app bookings. Highly active GrabTrike drivers and TODA leaders say the service has proven to be an effective “dagdag kita” to their regular street-hail, with daily completed rides and take-home pay rising by an average of twofold.

Grab Philippines country marketing head and director for cities J-anne Aruta shares: “Tricycles have long been the backbone of local transport in our communities. With Grab Asenso, we are ensuring that we are equipping them with the tools, skills, and safeguards so that they, too, can thrive in the digital economy. In doing so, we also raise the standard of safe, reliable transport for the riding public.”

Grab Asenso: A Digital Diskarte Program for Everyday Entrepreneurs

As part of the launch, tricycle drivers who had long been waiting to join GrabTrike but lacked access to a smartphone were finally onboarded — receiving brand-new units alongside highly active pioneering GrabTrike drivers whose devices were already worn out.

Grab provided brand-new smartphones to qualified tricycle drivers who had met all requirements except having a device

The launch included a Grab Asenso Learning Session, equipping drivers with modules on road safety, passenger handling, and the use of in-app safety features such as Share Your Ride, Trip Monitoring, and the Emergency SOS button. The program combines device access with practical digital skills, aiming to embed safety, accountability, and professional servicing into day-to-day operations.

DICT Region IX Director Cheryl Ortega framed the rollout in the context of national priorities, which she underscored as central to DICT’s  goal of creating 8 million digital jobs nationwide.  Ortega commended Grab for donating mobile phones “which is crucial in empowering drivers and partners to work more effectively and safely in today’s digital economy.” She added: “We stand behind this effort as it reflects our direction underSecretary Henry Aguda to ensure that no Filipino is left behind.  Sa digital bayanihan, walang Pilipino ang maiiwan sa Bagong Pilipinas.” Programs like Grab Asenso, she pointed out, complement DICT’s work in building a more inclusive and sustainable digital ecosystem for all.

Mayor Khymer Adan Olaso, for his part, welcomed GrabTrike’s first-year milestone in Zamboanga.  “Digitalization — in this case through the GrabTrike — truly solves many of the challenges on the part of tricycles, the government and the commuting public.  Not only does it promote accountability, it also strengthens safety and security and ultimately creates trust with each other and thus promotes a stronger community in Zamboanga,” the mayor said through Rosendo Castillo, a representative from his executive team.

    Grab Asenso
GrabTrike Zamboanga pioneer driver Mark Anthony Balasabas shared that app-based bookings increase his daily trips by around twofold, depending on his total online hours.

One year on, Grab Asenso via GrabTrike has proven to be the most practical digital diskarte for Zamboanga’s tricycle drivers: additional earnings, safer rides, and digitalized livelihoods for those at the frontline of the country’s transport network.

Smart spending choices during the busy Ber months

The Ber months have arrived, bringing with them the excitement of reunions, festive celebrations, and long-awaited getaways. It’s the time of year when families come together, friends reconnect, and many Filipinos look forward to a well-deserved break after a busy year. According to Visa’s latest Green Shoots Radar Survey, December is the busiest month for both domestic and overseas leisure travel for Filipinos, accounting for 36% and 20% respectively of trips as people take the opportunity to relax and spend quality time with loved ones.

In fact, more Filipinos travel during December than the regional Asia Pacific average, with only 22% across Asia Pacific traveling domestically and only 20% traveling internationally during December.

As travel picks up, the survey also showed that more Filipinos are paying closer attention to how they manage their journeys. Beyond choosing destinations, they are looking at how they spend—from using cards to making the most out of digital options like QR codes. The goal is simple: to travel with ease, enjoy more, and worry less.

To get the best out of the season, here are Visa’s smart spending moves for a worry-free Ber month getaway:

    Swipe Smart, Travel Smart

According to Visa’s survey, nearly half of Filipino travelers (49%) prefer credit cards when abroad, thanks to their wide acceptance and security. Beyond peace of mind, you can also enjoy rewards, promos, and installment offers, stretching your holiday budget further.

Use your Visa card for big-ticket expenses like flights, hotels, and shopping. This holiday season, putting your purchases on your Visa card also means less time worrying about carrying large amounts of cash and more time enjoying the moments that matter. From exclusive perks to purchase protection, your card acts as both a payment tool and a travel companion.

    Don’t Fumble for Change—Just Scan

More than half of Filipinos, or 59%, know they can now use QR code payments abroad. With Visa-enabled e-wallets and banking apps, paying for travel purchases becomes faster, safer, and more convenient. From grabbing coffee in Seoul to buying pasalubong in Singapore, a quick scan saves you from handling loose change.

Beyond convenience, it’s also a way to keep up with how payments are evolving globally. More destinations are embracing QR payments for their speed and simplicity, allowing travelers to move with confidence through crowded shops, bustling markets, and festive holiday events.

Plan Your Budget and Track Your Spending

The top overseas destinations for Filipinos are Japan (37%), followed by Singapore (20%), and South Korea and Hong Kong (19% each). Each of these hotspots has its own spending patterns – from essentials like transport passes and convenience stores, to shopping and dining experiences.

A simple way to stay on track is to plan your budget per destination before flying out. Allocate a portion of your holiday funds for each stop, and use your Visa card to cover the essentials like transport, meals, and must-have purchases. This helps you track your spending through your card’s purchase records and see if you still have extra funds for other finds, whether that’s anime collectibles in Tokyo, skincare in Seoul, or pasalubong from Hong Kong.

    Prioritize Moments, Not Money Worries

For many Filipinos, traveling during the Ber months is more than just sightseeing, but a chance to reunite with family and friends, take a well-deserved break, and seek thrill and enjoyment. In fact, 43% of Filipinos say visiting loved ones is their top reason for traveling overseas, while 29% say they travel for relaxation. Close to a third, or 28%, of Filipinos travel to visit a theme park – the highest in the region. With Visa’s secure and widely accepted payment options, you can focus on the joy of these reunions and festivities without the added stress of managing how to pay.

When you no longer have to think about juggling cash or complicated payments, you can be more present in the moments that truly matter. That’s what the Ber months are all about – spending less energy on logistics and more on the connections that make the season special.

“Filipinos are becoming more intentional about how they travel, not only in where they go but in how they pay,” said Jeffrey Navarro, country manager for Visa in the Philippines. “This holiday season, Visa is here to make every trip simpler and more secure, so travelers can spend with confidence and focus on making memories that matter most.”

The Ber months are a reminder that travel and spending are not just about transactions, but about the experiences they enable. From long-awaited reunions to simple moments of joy, this season is a chance to pause and celebrate what matters most. With Visa, Filipinos can step into these occasions with confidence, knowing their payments are secure and seamless—leaving them free to enjoy the season’s celebrations with ease.

The Credibility Advantage: UPMG’s 3rd general membership meeting affirms print’s power in the digital age

In an era when “anyone can post, react, or go viral,” the printed word commanded the spotlight as the United Print & Multimedia Group (UPMG) gathered for its 3rd General Membership Meeting at the Kingsford Hotel Manila.

With the theme “The Credibility Advantage: How Print Builds Trust in a Digital World,” the September gathering united publishers, editors, advertisers, and industry leaders for a full day of dialogue on how trusted journalism can guide audiences through an age of information overload.

Framing the Day: Credibility as Cornerstone

UPMG president and concurrent assistant vice president of the Journal Group of Publications, Vivienne Motomal opened the program with a message that was both a celebration of print’s resilience and a challenge to uphold its standards. “It feels good to be gathered in this room with people who share a deep-seated belief in the power of the printed word,” she began, drawing immediate attention to the heart of the event.

Motomal acknowledged the swift rise of digital media but reminded everyone of print’s enduring role: “In this chaos, what does the reader yearn for? They yearn for an anchor. A source they can trust. When a person holds a newspaper or a magazine in their hands, they are holding a tangible commitment to journalism.”

She underscored that credibility remains the industry’s strongest currency: “This is why, even in the digital age, our role is more critical than ever. The future is a credible hybrid where print and digital can work together to build a complete, trustworthy media ecosystem.”
Her remarks set a purposeful tone for the day, earning nods and quiet applause from a ballroom filled with veteran publishers and media practitioners.

Keynote Spotlight: Trust and Relevance in the Age of AI

The morning’s keynote came from Lucien C. Dy Tioco, executive vice president of the Philstar Media Group, titled “Trust and Relevance in the Age of AI.”
Dy Tioco traced the arc of media transformation, recalling how the once “traditional” press now competes with algorithm-driven feeds.

“Fast forward to the present time, we now live entirely different from how we were 15 years ago,” he observed, noting how people scroll for headlines, binge shows, and check influencers for tips without a second thought. But with these conveniences came serious consequences. “Technology has brought a more toxic conversation on social media, strong political biases that breed divisiveness, bigger and bolder online scams, and worse of all, fake news to help distort public opinion,” he warned.

Generative AI, he added, is the next disruptor: “In just over a year, AI technology is quickly being applied in almost everything… We need to fight for our place NOW.”

Dy Tioco reaffirmed the value of print: “We write news with a journalistic edge. We curate news according to national importance. We create content to foster objectivity and calm. That is what the world needs right now. We need to exist because we fight for the truth.”

He highlighted the Philstar Media Group’s own multi-platform initiatives Nakakalocal: Love Local, Grow Global, Project KaLIKHAsan, She Slays, and READiscover, as proof that legacy media can innovate while preserving the integrity of the printed word.

Panel Dialogue: Building Credibility in the Age of Misinformation

The keynote flowed into a lively panel moderated by Angel Guerrero, vice president of UPMG and publisher of Adobo Magazine, with Lucien C. Dy Tioco and Jack Jacinto, vice president for public and member relations group of the Pag-IBIG Fund.
Their discussion tackled the industry’s most urgent challenge: sustaining trust amid a flood of misinformation.

Jacinto underscored the public sector’s reliance on credible outlets: “Our organization knows this and values credibility, which is why we support print.” The panel highlighted the meticulous processes behind print; fact-checking, rigorous editorial process, and context-rich reporting, as essential safeguards against fake news. They urged publishers to present a united front to policymakers, emphasizing that print’s permanence and credibility remain irreplaceable even as technology reshapes distribution.

Audience members engaged with thoughtful questions on integrating AI verification tools and expanding media-literacy programs, reinforcing a shared understanding: technology may change delivery, but the need for trustworthy content is timeless.

Afternoon Insights: Data, Narrative, and the Digital Battlefield

After a lively networking lunch and a lighthearted musical performance, the spotlight shifted to the science of narrative. Von Cruz and Bernz Soriano from The Nerve, a Manila-based narrative intelligence and data-forensics firm, demonstrated how their technology goes beyond social listening to trace how both authentic stories and misinformation move through digital ecosystems.

Their investigative platform maps influence networks and identifies the sources of viral falsehoods, insights that help newsrooms and advocacy groups respond swiftly and accurately.
By showing how narrative forensics can complement traditional reporting,

The Nerve’s presentation perfectly aligned with the day’s theme: combining data-driven innovation with journalism’s timeless commitment to credibility.

    Recognizing Growth and Community

UPMG also celebrated its own progress. Vivienne Motomal presented the annual report, spotlighting new partnerships and achievements that strengthened the organization’s influence across the publishing sector.

Two new member organizations; Simple.ph and Philippine Graphics, were officially inducted, bringing fresh energy and perspectives to the growing UPMG family.

The festivities continued with raffle draws and a warm welcome from Jericho Feliciano, Director of Sales of the Kingsford Hotel Manila, who commended UPMG’s dedication to responsible journalism and thanked participants for making the hotel a hub for meaningful dialogue.

    Why This Gathering Matters

The event concluded with closing remarks from Roda Zabat, UPMG Auditor and Vice President for Sales and Marketing of The Manila Times, who captured the sentiment of the day: print is far from obsolete and is instead evolving into a powerful hybrid with digital platforms.

The 3rd UPMG General Membership Meeting ultimately affirmed that credibility is not just a legacy value but a living mandate for the industry’s future.
Participants left Kingsford Hotel Manila inspired to defend the standards, verification, context, and accountability that give journalism its authority, whether the story appears on paper or on a screen.

For UPMG, now representing a dynamic alliance of print and multimedia organizations, this third general membership meeting marked a pivotal moment: a reaffirmation that trust remains the ultimate competitive edge.

By blending hard-earned credibility with forward-looking innovation, the Philippine print and multimedia industry signaled its resolve to remain a vital, truth-telling force in a digital age.

“By powering this EcoRun with our best-in-class fuels, we demonstrate that efficiency begins at the pump,” said Petron Corporation general manager Lubin B. Nepomuceno. “Petron XCS and Petron Turbo Diesel are trusted by millions of Filipino motorists every day because they deliver real performance and real savings.”

The 2025 DOE–Petron Fuel EcoRun will flag off from Petron TPLEX Northbound, turn around at the Rosario, La Union rotunda, and finish at Petron TPLEX Southbound, completing a distance of approximately 156-kilometers.

The 2025 DOE–Petron Fuel EcoRun is not a competition but a demonstration of how different vehicle technologies—from internal combustion to hybrids and electric—perform under actual expressway driving conditions. By providing the official fuels, Petron ensures that all ICE-powered and hybrid vehicles are tested with the same high-quality benchmark fuels, guaranteeing fairness and credibility in results.

Beyond fuels, Petron is also enabling cleaner transport by offering  EV charging facilities at its TPLEX stations, underscoring its commitment to a future-ready, diversified energy portfolio that supports both traditional and alternative fuels.

The 2025 DOE–Petron Fuel EcoRun builds on a legacy that began with earlier DOE EcoRuns in 2016 and 2017, where Petron was also the official fuel partner. These pioneering runs raised public awareness about fuel-efficient driving, generated critical performance data, and set the stage for industry-wide improvements in vehicle efficiency.

“Petron is proud to have been DOE’s partner in past EcoRuns and continues to champion this advocacy,” added Nepomuceno. “By promoting energy efficiency, we are not only helping motorists save on fuel costs but also contributing to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and building a more sustainable transport sector.”

Petron Corporation is the largest oil refining and marketing company in the Philippines, capable of supplying about 40% of the country’s total fuel requirements. With a nationwide network of service stations, Petron provides premium fuels, lubricants, and services trusted by millions of Filipino motorists. Guided by its “Tapat Sa’yo” campaign, Petron continues to embody its promise of being a reliable and responsible partner for every Filipino journey—delivering quality products, pioneering innovations, and investing in sustainability to help build a future-ready energy landscape for the Philippines.

Garmin Descent S1 Smart Buoy advances dive safety technology

Garmin has made a revolutionary addition to its Garmin dive lineup with the Descent S1 Buoy, designed to help strengthen diver communication and enhance peace of mind for divers and their crew. Using Garmin’s unique SubWave™ sonar networking, the buoy integrates seamlessly with Garmin dive computers to help crew members on the surface track and monitor up to eight divers—and exchange preset messages with those using a compatible dive computer and Descent T2 transceiver. For increased situational awareness, connected divers can also see the distance and direction to the buoy and receive clear guidance to help them know where to surface.

“Garmin is focused on creating essential products designed to help keep divers safe. The groundbreaking Descent S1 buoy adds game-changing communication, navigation, and safety capabilities between divers and their surface crew, making it the next must-have piece of kit for dive teams, charter operations, instructors, and more,” notes Susan Lyman, Garmin vice president of consumer sales and marketing

    Advancing the diver experience

    • Find my buoy: Connected divers can see the distance and direction back to the buoy – whether it’s tethered in place, on the anchor line of a boat, or on the boat’s tag line during a drift dive – and use it to navigate back to the buoy.
    • Diver-to-surface messaging: When using a connected Descent dive computer, divers can tell those on the surface where they are, where they’re going, if they need to come up early, and their remaining decompression time.
    • Extended diver-to-diver messaging: While beneath the surface, the buoy extends the range of diver-to-diver messaging capabilities. Divers with compatible Descent dive computers can exchange preset messages with one another up to 100 meters away.
    • Post-dive review: After returning to the surface, view underwater heatmaps on the Garmin Dive smart-device app to see where explorations took place.

Revolutionizing the diving experience from the surface

Topside crews can better track divers below the surface when using both the Descent S1 Buoy and the Garmin Dive app.

    • Remote diver monitoring: Track tank pressures, diver location and depth, and more when divers are equipped with a compatible dive computer and Descent T2 transceiver. Automatic alerts can also let topside crew members know when a diver’s tank pressure is low.
    • Surface-to-diver messaging: Topside crews can exchange preset messages with connected Descent dive computers underwater, allowing them to communicate with divers and send out a diver recall if the dive needs to be cut short.
    • Diver location tracking: Track the approximate range to each diver in the SubWave sonar network—up to 100 meters away from the buoy2.

    Rugged and connected

The compact Descent S1 Buoy weighs just 2 pounds and has an IPX8 water rating to 10 meters. The rechargeable lithium battery provides up to 15 hours of battery life so it can be used during a typical weekend dive trip before needing to be recharged. To keep divers connected to their topside crew, the buoy uses Wi-Fi® technology to wirelessly connect to the Garmin Dive app, up to 60 meters away.

The Descent S1 Buoy has a suggested retail price of PHP153,990 and is available now for pre-order in Garmin Brand Stores, Garmin Specialty Stores.

Agham Youth brings People’s Science School to Navotas

In Navotas, where the sea meets the city, lies a community overlooked by its own government. It sits at the frontline near the water, experiencing the worst from ineffective flood control projects and broken governance. With stories of survival and grit, the residents of Brgy Bagong Silang continue to face even bigger challenges, often bearing the most severe consequences of aggressive development.

Many barangay residents come from Leyte and the Visayas, having moved to Manila in search of work and stability. For generations, they built their lives around fishing and tahungan (mussel farming). Today, these livelihoods have vanished, replaced by large-scale reclamation projects along Manila Bay conducted by private corporations, and supported by local government units. The excessive pollution and chemicals poured into the waters have rendered the sea essentially dead. Without stable incomes, residents are forced to rely on ineffective government projects like the TUPAD program, which only provides at most a few weeks of income. This, coupled with the difficulties of daily living, leaves them with no water, electricity, or sanitation facilities. Given these, the community is also helpless against diseases like leptospirosis and dengue, with their access to hospitals and health centers extremely limited.

Though the community had no hand in causing these environmental problems, they ultimately pay the price for them. Their narrative is not one of resilience, it is one of neglect. Amidst these challenges, there is space for learning, hope, and resistance.

This September, Agham Youth is launching the People’s Science School, along with community leaders who have tirelessly kept the spirit of the barangay alive. This grassroots initiative aims to democratize education, helping the community with their immediate needs like learning about (health, hygiene, sex education). The People’s Science School is not a classroom with four walls, but one that is community-driven, empowering families to equip themselves with baseline knowledge to navigate their everyday lives. This initiative may also create a space for critical discussion on the environment and the community’s options for survival, adopting resistance beyond just resilience.

The action of Agham Youth is more than just an expression of advocacy. It is a clear reminder that we, as members of society, cannot remain passive in the face of pressing issues. Their initiative signifies a call to action, urging us to recognize that change does not happen on its own; it requires courage, unity, and the willingness to confront the challenges of our time. By taking a stand, Agham Youth demonstrates that the power to transform society rests not only in institutions but also in the hands of ordinary citizens, especially the youth. Their efforts embody the belief that social progress begins with awareness, is strengthened by collective action, and is sustained through continuous struggle for justice and equality.

In this light, their movement is not just for themselves but for all of us. It challenges us to reflect: What role will we play in shaping the society we envision? The answer lies in our readiness to act, to question, and to work together for a better and more just future.
