Kaspersky warns against fake mobile apps that steal money and data

Global cybersecurity company Kaspersky is sounding the alarm on the rising threat of fake mobile apps that disguise themselves as legitimate tools and hijack devices, steal data, and drain funds from unsuspecting users.

These malicious apps, often Trojan bankers, are designed to look and function like legitimate utilities such as mobile banking apps, government service portals, e-wallets, investment platforms, messaging tools, or even basic apps like flashlights. However, once installed, they silently run in the background, often without the user’s knowledge, and can intercept personal data, manipulate transactions, and enable remote access to both personal and financial information.

Trojan banker malware works by posing as real apps or overlaying fake login screens on top of genuine ones. In more advanced cases, attackers can inject malicious code that allows them to remotely control infected devices and conduct unauthorized transactions undetected.

In 2024, cybercriminals are increasingly turning their attention to mobile platforms and cryptocurrency assets over the years. Kaspersky’s new Financial Cyberthreats Report showed the number of users encountering mobile banking Trojans rose by 3.6 times in 2024 compared to 2023, while crypto-related phishing detections climbed by 83.4 percent.

“Cybercriminals are constantly refining their tactics, and fake mobile apps have become one of the most effective tools in their arsenal,” said Adrian Hia, managing director for Asia Pacific at Kaspersky. “These apps may seem legitimate, but once downloaded, they’re capable of stealing banking credentials, bypassing security checks, and causing serious financial damage.”

In the Philippines, where mobile-first financial services continue to expand rapidly, users remain highly vulnerable to online scams. Kaspersky recorded 82,565 financial phishing attempts in the first half of 2024, compared with 59,115 in the first half of 2025, underscoring how cybercriminal activity continues to pose a persistent threat despite fluctuations.

Kaspersky also observed ransomware activity remaining a serious concern across Southeast Asia, with slight declines in overall infection rates between the first half of 2024 and the same period in 2025. In the Philippines, ransomware detections dropped marginally from 0.24 percent in H1 2024 to 0.22 percent in H1 2025, signaling ongoing but persistent threat activity.

To help users guard against fake apps and mobile malware, Kaspersky recommends the following:

    For Individual Users

    • Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) and use strong, unique passwords for all your accounts to reduce the risk of unauthorized access.
    • Avoid clicking on links from suspicious messages, emails, or pop-ups. Always verify the legitimacy of websites before entering your login details or payment information.
    • Install a reliable security solution that can detect and block both malware and phishing attempts.
    • Download apps only from trusted sources, such as official app marketplaces like Google Play or the Apple App Store. However, keep in mind that even these platforms are not immune to threats. For example, Kaspersky recently discovered SparkCat, the first screenshot-stealing malware to bypass the App Store’s security, also found in 20 infected apps on Google Play. Always read app reviews, check developer names, and verify legitimacy before downloading.
    • Review app permissions regularly. Be especially cautious with high-risk permissions like Accessibility Services, which can be exploited by malicious apps. Only grant access when absolutely necessary and make sure it aligns with the app’s intended function.

    For Businesses

    • Ensure all systems and software are updated regularly, particularly applying critical security patches as soon as they become available.
    • Equip staff with the knowledge to recognize phishing attempts and follow safe digital practices, such as securing their accounts and devices.
    • Deploy robust monitoring tools and endpoint protection to detect and respond to suspicious activity across your network.
    • Enforce strict access controls for employees handling financial transactions or sensitive data. Consider implementing “default deny” policies and segmenting networks to limit exposure in case of compromise.
    • Subscribe to trusted threat intelligence services to stay informed about the latest malware variants, attack vectors, and cybercriminal strategies targeting your industry or region.

Pag-IBIG Fund to offer special 4.5% rate for home loans up to PHP1.8 million

Pag-IBIG Fund is set to offer a special 4.5 percent housing loan rate to qualified members seeking to purchase house-and-lot packages worth up to PHP1.8-million, as part of the Marcos Administration’s Expanded Pambansang Pabahay para sa Pilipino (4PH) Program. The promotional rate is expected to be available starting in October, as the agency joins the nationwide celebration of National Shelter Month.

Under the program, the first 10,000 housing loan applications from locally employed members and 1,000 applications from Overseas Filipino Workers will enjoy the subsidized 4.5 percent annual interest rate, fixed for the first three years of the loan. Once the program is implemented, eligible applications already in the pipeline will also be granted the special rate, in addition to the 11,000 slots.

The 4.5 percent rate is significantly lower than the current 6.25 percent for similar loans, making monthly payments more affordable for borrowers.

“We continue to heed the call of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to provide affordable and inclusive housing for every Filipino family,” said Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development Secretary Jose Ramon Aliling, who also chairs the Pag-IBIG Fund Board of Trustees. “Just last July, we introduced a subsidized 3 percent rate for the first five years of loans for socialized housing units. Now, we are further expanding access to affordable home financing by offering a special rate for loans of up to PHP1.8 million, which exceed the socialized housing ceiling. This is another important step in broadening access to dignified and sustainable homeownership.”

First-time homebuyers may qualify for the 4.5 percent promotional rate for loans of up to PHP1.8 million, provided they are active Pag-IBIG Fund members with at least 12 monthly savings. The program is open to members earning less than PHP47,856 per month in the National Capital Region, and less than PHP34,686 per month in areas outside NCR. All Overseas Filipino Workers, regardless of income, also qualify.

Loan proceeds may be used for the purchase of a residential house and lot, a residential lot, the construction or completion of a home, home improvement, or the purchase of a Pag-IBIG Fund Acquired Asset.

According to Pag-IBIG Fund chief executive officer Marilene C. Acosta, the special rate allows members to save nearly PHP2,000 per month, or about PHP71,000 over the first three years of a PHP1.8 million loan payable over 30 years. Under this offer, the monthly amortization for this loan at the promotional rate of 4.5 percent is only PHP9,120.34, compared to PHP11,082.91 at the regular 6.25 percent rate.

“This program makes even non-socialized housing more affordable and responds to the needs of Filipino families who prefer house-and-lot units that offer more space, privacy and long-term value,” Acosta said. “Through this initiative, we not only provide substantial savings, we also help turn the dream of homeownership into reality. This effort supports President Marcos’ vision of a better, more secure life for every Filipino. At Pag-IBIG Fund, we remain committed to serving our members with compassion, efficiency and integrity, because every Filipino deserves a home they can truly call their own.”

Coco Martin meets Tamaraw customers in Toyota Cagayan de Oro

As brand ambassador of the Next Generation Tamaraw, Coco Martin visited Toyota Cagayan de Oro (TCO) in the middle of CDO’s Higalaay festivities as part of the nationwide Tamaraw caravan being organized by Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) and its partner dealers.

Coco Martin arrived at the Toyota showroom in Kauswagan, Cagayan de Oro to the sound of drumbeats and screams of excitement from Kagay-anons who had been waiting to see the popular actor in person.

CDO is Coco’s first provincial stop, which allowed him to meet and greet the Next Generation Toyota Tamaraw customers who embody hard work, value function and cost-efficiency in moving their lives forward.

In appreciation for CDO customers who chose the Next Generation Tamaraw as their partner for progress, Coco joined TCO officers Ms. Betty Lu and Mr. Peter Lim Lo Suy in releasing a newly purchased Toyota Tamaraw Utility Van to customers Mr. & Mrs. Lopez.

The actor also shared his experience with his own Toyota Tamaraw, emphasizing the versatility and dependability of the vehicle in helping him run his business.

“Habang okay ang aking career, sinisumulan ko ang pag nenegosyo. Nagtayo ako ng isang kompanya na ang pangalan ay Coco Plus (While my career is going well, I’m starting a business. I established a company called Coco Plus),” said Coco during his talk in front of TCO customers. “Ang Tamaraw ang ginagamit ko para sa aking hanap buhay para mas mapabilis ang pag-aangkat at pagdedeliber ng aking mga produkto (I use the Tamaraw for my business to speed up the delivery of my products),” he added.

One of the customers present in the showroom to meet the Tamaraw ambassador was Sohaimah Noroden, who runs N&S Glassware and is into live selling.

She bought a Tamaraw Aluminum Cargo for her business. She finds it to be fuel-efficient, easy to drive, cargo-efficient, and pocket-friendly for a businesswoman like her who is part of the MSME sector that is thriving in Cagayan de Oro City. It’s easy to load cargo on her Tamaraw, she said.

Coco Martin met more Kagay-anons at a nearby mall where Toyota had a vibrant display of the Next Generation Toyota Tamaraw. His surprise visit drew mallgoers to check out the Tamaraw, which they saw as having evolved in design and being customized to the needs of its market.

From the showroom to the mall in the City of Golden Friendship, Toyota Tamaraw brand ambassador Coco Martin gave Kagay-anons his heart and his smile.

The Next Generation Toyota Tamaraw was introduced in 2024 as a versatile utility vehicle that responds to the needs of various entrepreneurs. Recently, TMP expanded the Tamaraw lineup by unveiling the Wing Van, Food Truck, and Mobile Store last July. These conversions join the existing Dropside, Utility Van, and the Aluminum Cargo variants.

Grab ride hailing services integrated into Alipay+ Voyager across SEA

Alipay+, Ant International’s global wallet gateway, and Grab, Southeast Asia’s leading superapp, have announced the integration of Grab’s ride-hailing services into Alipay+ Voyager, its inbuilt end-to-end AI travel agent. This will make local transportation services in Southeast Asia more accessible for users of Alipay+ Voyager, who can now book rides directly from within their digital wallets. Through this integration, Alipay+ and Grab are further deepening their partnership, which began in 2023 by allowing consumers to use their home e-wallets to make payments on the Grab app. Now, users can book Grab’s ride-hailing services directly from within the same e-wallet, without needing to download an additional app.

Launched in mid-2025, Alipay+ Voyager is currently available in Alipay (Chinese mainland), AlipayHK (Hong Kong SAR, China) and GCash (the Philippines), and will roll out to more partners throughout the year. Users travelling to all eight Southeast Asian destinations where Grab is available – Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar – can simply access Grab directly within Alipay+ Voyager. This integration removes friction in the customer journey by allowing users to access ride-hailing services seamlessly within an ecosystem they already know and trust, for a fuss-free travel experience in Southeast Asia.

“We’re thrilled to strengthen our partnership with Alipay+ Voyager to deliver safe and reliable ride-hailing services for more travellers visiting Southeast Asia. This collaboration underscores our shared commitment to enhancing the travel experience and providing greater convenience for millions of users,” said Samir Kumar, head of mobility at Grab.

Hong Kong travellers to SEA destinations can simply book Grab rides directly from their AlipayHK app

Alipay+ connects 36 leading payment partner apps with more than 1.7 billion user accounts to over 100 million in-store merchants in 70 markets. Complementing its cross-border payment capabilities, Alipay+ is developing digital services for its partners, including rewards, in-app tax refunds and Alipay+ Voyager.

Ipsos Gig Life PH Study finds flexibility and extra income as top reasons why Filipinos do gig work

Ipsos, one of the world’s leading market research companies, announces the findings of a nationwide survey on Gig Life PH: Understanding the Realities and Preferences of Filipino Gig Workers, supported by the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), which aims to understand the motivations, experiences, and needs of Filipino gig workers, while identifying gaps in the sector to guide policy-making decisions.

Key findings of the Ipsos Gig Life Study include:

    • The sweet spot: Gig workers enjoy flexibility and earn more without having to give up their full-time jobs. Gig workers primarily pursue gig work to earn extra income (59%). Gig work’s inherent flexibility, with 47% enjoying control over their hours and 35% favoring the ability to work from various places, remains a fundamental appeal, underlining why many consider gig work.
    • Gig work — stopgap or viable career choice? Six of ten believe that gig work is a strategic choice and a viable long-term career option. Many gig workers see flexible work arrangements as a pathway to achieving broader financial and personal goals, vs. a fast-income route, with 30% having no plans to stop gig work at all.
    • The best of both worlds? Gig workers want freedom at work and a safety net with retirement, savings, and healthcare perks. The majority of gig workers actively save for retirement. Gig workers express a strong preference for managing their own social benefits to match personal needs, with 64% focusing on retirement planning and 58% prioritizing access to healthcare services.
    • Despite its growing popularity, gig work serves as an additional income stream. Most respondents, 61%, engage in gig work part-time to supplement their primary income from full-time jobs or business ventures.
    • The Philippine gig economy reveals age, gender, and educational divides across different gig types. Younger Filipinos comprise the majority of the gig workforce, with the 25-34 age group accounting for approximately 37% of workers. Non-location-based gig workers hold higher educational qualifications than their location-based counterparts. Non-location-based gigs tend to attract more women (62%) than physically demanding location-based gigs, which have a male majority (76%).
    • Despite income swings, gig workers stay upbeat while seeking pay that matches their hustle. Most gig workers face earnings inconsistency, with monthly earnings fluctuating by 10% to more than 30%. Despite this variability, 78% of gig workers remain satisfied with the flexibility and potential gig work offers.

Christine Dugay, Ipsos Strategy3 in the Philippines, principal, said: “The gig economy is growing fast in the Philippines—platforms have reshaped how we work, granting autonomy and helping households stay financially resilient—but gig workers still face volatile earnings, pay discrepancies, and limited social protection. Gig workers value flexibility and the opportunity to increase their income, yet they also clearly want fair pay standards and comprehensive, portable benefits. We find that there are significant opportunities for government and platforms to further support gig workers in building a balanced ecosystem that powers growth and drives labor market transformation in the country.”

    Ipsos

    Moving Forward with Tech

To sustain growth, gig workers need better access to digital tools, platforms, and ICT infrastructure, especially in underserved areas, the study underscored. Technology is the backbone of the Philippine gig economy, enabling flexible work arrangements and connecting workers with income opportunities.

At the same time, upskilling programs are essential to help workers remain competitive and move up the value chain.

The Ipsos study cited DICT’s ASCEND (Accelerating Successful Filipino Online Freelancers to High-Value, Niche, and Digital Services) and SPARK (Skills Package for Accelerated Remote Knowledge-Work) programs, which aim to equip gig workers with advanced digital skills, provide certifications, and open pathways for higher-value opportunities in the global digital economy.

Dir. Jhino B. Ilano, DICT Bureau Director III for ICT Industry Development, said “The data, insights, and findings from the ‘Gig Life PH’ study of Ipsos Strategy3 are invaluable to us, as these help frame the realities of the gig workers of the Philippines. Studies like these are relevant and are directly aligned with our mission to create digital and digitally-enabled jobs. By understanding the realities and preferences of Filipino gig workers, the ICT Industry Development Bureau of DICT can effectively design, continuously implement, and encourage multi-stakeholders’ approach in initiatives like the EDGE PH Program, ASCEND, and even ILCDB’s SPARK to support a sustainable and future-ready gig ecosystem for all Filipinos.”

Trend Micro pushes for proactive cybersecurity at DECODE 2025

Leading cybersecurity company Trend Micro recently concluded its annual free-for-all cybersecurity conference DECODE 2025: Maximize Momentum. Now in its ninth year, DECODE 2025 was attended by over 600 cybersecurity professionals and featured a variety of talks led by local and global industry experts, hands-on activities, and engaging demonstrations highlighting the current state of the cybersecurity landscape.

“This year, we found it important to emphasize proactive cybersecurity amidst the escalation of AI-assisted threats. Through DECODE, we are able to share our research on the various threats and landscape with fellow industry professionals and experts, so that businesses and individuals alike can learn how to best protect themselves,” shared Alma Saturnino-Alvarez, Trend Micro’s director for Threat Research and founder of DECODE.

This year’s DECODE conference zeroed in on prevalent AI-backed cybercrime attacks as well as agentic AI, automotive cybersecurity, and what local law enforcement is doing to improve the Philippines’ cyber posture. From over 22 different talks and sessions led by senior Trend Micro researchers and partner law enforcement experts, DECODE 2025 shed light on the most pressing issues concerning the cybersecurity landscape today.

    DECODE
Plenary Panelists (L-R): Robert McArdle, Jay Yaneza, PBGen Bernard Yang, and Dr. Neal Jetton

On AI-backed cybercrimes in today’s digital age

With its widespread availability and ease of use, people are becoming more trusting of generative AI and AI-based applications. This accessibility comes with a number of risks for users, such as deepfakes through image and audio manipulation, and more complex online scams through generated storylines and contextualized requests. A key topic throughout the event’s various panels and discussions, experts highlighted how these emerging AI technologies require a more proactive approach to cybersecurity in order to remain resilient and maintain a robust defense against AI-backed threats.

During the keynote speech, David Sancho, senior threat researcher at Trend Micro, shared the three main risks professionals and everyday citizens should be mindful of as more and more people become reliant on AI. In people allowing AI to ‘think’ for them, there is an erosion of skills, job opportunities, and ultimately, trust. Younger generations are finding it increasingly difficult to write independently due to increased dependence on AI technology, and simultaneously, companies and organizations are exchanging human manpower for AI systems and tools, taking away opportunities from capable individuals.

Out of the three risks, the third and most pressing, according to Sancho, is the erosion of trust. From fake news articles to realistic videos that feature non-existent events, paired with the prevalence of social media, it has become increasingly difficult for everyday citizens to differentiate the real from the AI. These risks of generative AI are, therefore, what professionals and everyday people must keep in mind to better understand and regulate the negative effects of these new technologies.

L-R: Locknote Speaker Ryan Flores and track session speakers Christian Nava, Sean Park, Morton Swimmer, and Fyodor Yarochkin

From defense to resilience: how Philippine law enforcement is gearing up

In a dedicated session entitled Cyber Warfare Is Cyber Resilience: Maximizing Operational Momentum in the Philippine Army, LtCol. Rod Quinto of the Philippine Army shared the force’s roadmap to further strengthen the country’s cybercrime defense from threat actors and the evolving local threat landscape. The Philippine Army is shifting its approach to cybersecurity from perimeter defense to operational resilience. This focuses on priming the force according to three key pillars: proactive preparation, actionable threat intelligence, and strategic response planning. “Cyber resilience isn’t about preventing every attack — it’s about maintaining mission effectiveness despite the attack,” stressed LtCol. Quinto.

To achieve cyber resilience, LtCol. Quinto stressed the value of collaborative defense, highlighting how the fight against cybercrime should be a collective effort from both the private and public sectors. “Our strongest defense is the unity of effort across all domains and sectors,” he shared.

DFSK EC75: An all-electric cargo van

In a fast-moving economy where logistics is the backbone of every thriving business, the demand for smart, sustainable, and affordable fleet vehicles has never been greater. At the forefront of this movement is the DFSK EC75 – a fully electric commercial van designed to meet the needs of modern-day cargo operations, from small business deliveries to large-scale regional transport.

    Built to Move Businesses

The DFSK EC75 stands out with a payload capacity of 1,200kg and a cargo volume of 6.7 cubic meters, offering both power and space in one highly functional platform. Measuring 5,130mm in length with a 3,200mm wheelbase, it gives B2B operators and fleet buyers the cargo room they need without compromising maneuverability in urban or regional routes. It rides on a MacPherson independent front suspension for smoother handling and a leaf spring rear suspension built to carry heavy loads—ideal for day-to-day logistics, SME deliveries, and mid-sized regional hauls.

    Powered for the Long Run

The EC75 features a 50.38kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, delivering a driving range of up to 310 kilometers on a single charge. Its DC fast-charging capability powers the van from 20% to 80% in just 45 minutes, ensuring minimized downtime for operations that rely on speed and uptime. With the rising fuel costs in the Philippines, fleet owners will appreciate the long-term value of electrification with minimal energy costs and reduced maintenance overhead.

    Modern Cabin. Smarter Driving.

Inside, the EC75 does not hold back. The cabin is equipped with a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system, digital driver display, multi-function steering wheel, and even a cooled glove box. With practical additions like wireless phone charging, USB-C support, and Bluetooth connectivity, DFSK ensures drivers and fleet partners have both comfort and connectivity on the road.

    Safety as Standard

Built into the EC75’s design is a full suite of driver-assistance and safety systems, including:

    • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
    • Lane Departure Warning (LDW)
    • Forward Collision Warning (FCW)
    • Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB)
    • Lane Keeping Assist (LKA)
    • A 360° panoramic camera and parking sensors
    • ABS with EBD, Hill Hold Control, Traction Control, and Brake Assist

These technologies promote safer long-distance and last-mile deliveries, giving fleet managers peace of mind while lowering risks across high-traffic or complex driving environments.

    Value That Works for Fleets

With a suggested retail price of PHP1.45 million, the DFSK EC75 offers exceptional value for fleet buyers, especially when considering fuel savings, government incentives for EV adoption, and reduced operational costs. It also comes with a 3-year/100,000km vehicle warranty and a 6-year/150,000km battery warranty, offering peace of mind to fleet procurement officers.

“The DFSK EC75 strikes the right balance between practical utility and long-term value for logistics-driven enterprises. It’s exactly the kind of solution our clients are looking for as they modernize their fleets,” said John Tovillo, business development manager, QSJ Motors Philippines.

    Final Gear

Whether you’re scaling your logistics fleet, upgrading to cleaner tech, or looking for a reliable partner to power your business expansion, the DFSK EC75 delivers. It’s more than just a van—it’s the workhorse of tomorrow, ready for the digital age of transport.

Fairness, transparency, and reliable service now outweigh price for online shoppers—Milieu Insight study

In 2025, Filipino online shoppers are redefining the concept of value. Bargains and low prices still matter, but good service, transparent policies, and reliable delivery now carry just as much, if not more, importance. That’s the key finding from the latest Milieu Insight study, which surveyed 500 buyers nationwide.

The findings highlight a shift in buyer behavior with major implications for sellers, platforms, and policymakers. Shoppers are rewarding businesses that prioritize transparency and user-centric practices with loyalty and increased spending, while walking away from those that fall short. These consumer-led shifts naturally push platforms to raise standards in response to buyer expectations.

“Competitive pricing alone is no longer enough to win buyers, ” said Juda Kanaprach, chief marketing officer and co-founder, Milieu Insight. “Value today goes beyond low prices—Filipino shoppers are looking for fairness, transparency, and respect at every step. Our findings show that 55% would buy more from sellers who communicate responsively and give timely updates, while almost half return to those who consistently deliver quickly. Companies that recognize this shift and put effort into service are the ones who will win loyalty in 2025.”

Poor service, however, comes with consequences. Delayed orders (47%), slow shipping (43%), and damaged or missing items (37%) are the most common frustrations. These setbacks affect long-term loyalty whereby, 46% of buyers stop purchasing from the same seller, while 39% leave negative reviews that can damage the reputation.

For many consumers, dependable service has become the deciding factor in future transactions. Sellers who rely on low prices but overlook consistency are at risk of losing repeat business.

Consumer Concerns Rising on Logistics and Accountability

The Milieu Insight study also sheds light on cost-related pain points. While e-commerce is now a routine activity for 87% of Filipinos each month, rising delivery fees and hidden charges are pushing many to rethink their purchases. Nearly six in ten (58%) said they would abandon their carts if unexpected charges appear at checkout. Another 49% said higher delivery costs make online shopping less worthwhile.

Still, Filipino consumers are willing to pay more when it leads to better outcomes. A striking 88% said they are open to paying higher fees if these guarantee on-time delivery. This signals that transparency and reliability in logistics matter just as much as price savings. Interestingly, most shoppers do not mind which courier delivers their orders—52% said the provider’s name is irrelevant, as long as packages arrive intact and on time. But expectations remain high: 89% believe marketplaces should hold logistics partners responsible for speed, reliability, and costs, and hold them accountable when their service falls short.

“Filipino shoppers are less concerned about which courier brings their orders and more focused on whether deliveries are safe and on time,” Kanaprach said. “That said, they still expect marketplaces to hold their logistics partners accountable in delivering on their promises.”

Returns and Refunds: An Expected Standard That Drives Loyalty

Another area that reinforces the importance of buyer-centric policies is the returns and refunds process. A smooth returns and refunds process is no longer a “nice-to-have”. It’s a baseline expectation for online shoppers and a powerful driver of seller success. Contrary to some sellers’ fears that lenient policies encourage abuse, Milieu’s data shows that most buyers act responsibly: 70% said they only use return/refund options for serious issues like damaged or incorrect items, and only 5% admitted to taking advantage of such policies whenever possible.

When handled well, returns build customer loyalty and repeat purchases. In fact, 87% of shoppers rated their most recent return/refund experience positively, underscoring that efficient, buyer-friendly policies strengthen trust and encourage long-term relationships. For sellers, this means that strong return policies don’t erode profitability, but rather, they safeguard reputation, drive repeat sales, and are essential to competing in a crowded marketplace.

    Innovation With Purpose

Looking past logistics and service, Filipino shoppers are also calling for meaningful innovations that enhance their experience. Popular tools include Buy Now, Pay Later (40%), livestream shopping (35%), and easy return/refund features (33%). Moving forward, buyers want practical solutions such as real-time customer support (55%), flexible returns (53%), and smarter product recommendations (43%).

Notably, 41% expressed interest in tools that allow them to preview products virtually, while 42% said they value platforms that support local sellers. This indicates that innovation works best when it’s both useful and relevant to Filipino consumers, not just flashy or new.

Overall, the Milieu Insight study highlights how Filipino shoppers are evolving from bargain hunters to value seekers. Value in 2025 is defined by fairness, transparency, and respect for the buyer journey.

To deliver this, sellers must invest in service, platforms must strengthen logistics and user experience, and policymakers can support growth by enabling fair practices and encouraging innovation. Together, these efforts will sustain a resilient and trusted e-commerce ecosystem in the country.

The excitement continued with 22 brand-new product launches, offering the public a first look at cutting-edge releases before they hit the market. All of this was powered by the participation of 100+ leading global and local tech brands, including Anker, AOC Monitor, Apple, Canon, Cricut, Digital Walker, GCash, Henry’s Camera, JBL, JisuLife, Luxetech, Nintendo, PC Express, Philips, PLDT Home, Rokid, TP-Link, Ugreen, and more.

Adding to the thrill, hourly raffle draws gave lucky visitors the chance to bring home top gadgets and equipment — from gaming laptops and power banks to premium speakers and even a Nintendo Switch. The cheers that filled the venue captured the true spirit of the Expo: fun, community, and a shared passion for all things tech.

The numbers tell the story best: over 8,000 visitors walked through the doors, and with the support of its exhibitors, the Expo generated an impressive PHP19,800,000 in sales. More than just an event, Consumer Tech Expo 2025 became a celebration of technology’s impact on everyday life.

Now, the countdown begins. The next Consumer Tech Expo is set to return on September 4–6, 2026, at the SMX Convention Center Manila. It promises to be even more extraordinary — with more brands, more innovations, and more experiences that will redefine the way people live, work, and play.

UP student wins James Dyson Award with salt-farming solution for coastal communities

    0

The Philippines’ national winner of the 20th James Dyson Award, SolAsin, addresses the nation’s struggling salt industry and the absence of sustainable livelihood opportunities for coastal residents. Designed by UP Diliman industrial design student John Carlo Luna Reyes, the small, sun-powered system utilizes seawater and sunlight to create high-value flaky salt—providing communities with a new, convenient means to revive a formerly flourishing livelihood.

    The Problem

Even after the passage of the Salt Industry Development Law, the Philippines continues to import 93% of its salt, a stark sign of how the once-thriving local salt industry has deteriorated. Climate change, lack of technology, erratic government assistance, urbanization, and reclamation of coastal lands have disrupted the traditional salt farming. Successive generations over time also lost interest, with coastal communities struggling to keep intact what used to be a main source of livelihood.

    The Invention

SolAsin is designed as a compact and sustainable alternative to traditional salt beds, which require vast land and capital. Using only filtered seawater, sunlight, and occasional remixing, the device produces premium flaky salt—highly valued in small batches by restaurants, hotels, and even tourists. Reyes refined the invention through prototypes, field testing, and consultations with local residents and officials, ensuring it is both usable and income-generating.

Words from the Judges and the Creator

James Dyson Award judges commended SolAsin for its simplicity, scalability, and social impact, pointing to how it leverages community input and local resources.

Dr. Jaine Cadoc-Reyes of UP Los Baños referred to it as a shining instance of design empowering people.

Melvin John Dela Peña of Dyson observed that SolAsin is a reflection of Dyson’s problem-solving culture through iterative design.

To Reyes, the prize is greater than personal accolade: “This is a victory for the communities that inspired SolAsin. My aim has always been to design with and for the people, and this award allows me the chance to further grow the project so that it can really uplift local salt farmers.”

    The Runner-ups

ChillWise: Lightweight foamed concrete, heat storage materials, and agro-waste such as rice hull ash are used to make energy-efficient cooling panels that regulate indoor temperatures passively, lowering the need for expensive air-conditioning.

Lambooply: A composite material of bamboo and Lampakanay fibers with non-toxic adhesives, which is strong enough to use as a substitute for imported wood in construction and design.

Both innovations move alongside SolAsin to the next round of the James Dyson Award, where they will be competing internationally.
