L’oreal PH inaugurates expanded distribution hub

L’Oréal Philippines inaugurated its new distribution center located in Calamba, Laguna, a significantly expanded and technologically advanced hub through a strategic partnership with Maersk. This strategic investment will service L’Oréal customers all over the Philippines and will propel the company’s growth plans. The hub also embodies the Group’s “L’Oréal for the Future” commitment, reinforcing its dedication to seamlessly integrating environmental and social responsibility and operational excellence within its supply chain.

“In a market like the Philippines with highly engaged beauty consumers, our priority is to bring the best of beauty to more Filipinos in a sustainable and scalable manner. This new distribution hub will enable us to reach that ambition while demonstrating our commitment to quality, innovation, supply chain excellence, and responsible practices,” said Yassine BAKKARI, Country managing director of L’Oréal Philippines.

The new 60,000sqm distribution center is three times bigger than the previous hub and has seven times more storage. It is strategically located in the South Luzon area, in proximity to the distribution sites of major retailer partners, thereby increasing capacity and improving the speed of distribution by over thirty percent. The new hub has a built-to-suit facility that significantly increases the capability of e-commerce fulfillment.

Guided by L’Oréal for the Future’s sustainability commitment, the new distribution hub ensures that its operations respect planetary boundaries and help address social issues like plastic waste and limited livelihood opportunities in the Philippines.

The hub is powered by renewable energy sources and equipped with smart lighting and a rainwater collection system to minimize its environmental footprint. Furthermore, the facility has eliminated the use of plastic in its packaging processes, utilizing Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified cartons and water-activated paper tape for all orders. Additionally, L’Oréal has piloted the use of electric vehicles to transport its products. The hub’s operations also support local communities through the inclusive sourcing program, which provides livelihood opportunities to Filipinos from vulnerable backgrounds.

This development was made possible through a strategic partnership with Maersk, a global leader in logistics, warehousing, and supply chain management. This collaboration underscores the importance of shared sustainability efforts and the power of collective action in driving positive change.

“We are thrilled to partner with L’Oréal Philippines on this project, which aligns perfectly with their vision for a more sustainable beauty industry,” said SP Tan, head of PH, Maersk Contract Logistics. “This partnership exemplifies how shared responsibility and collaboration can drive meaningful change within supply chains.”

Globe sees rise in cable theft cases in Greater Manila Area in H1 2024

Globe has reported an 18.6% increase in cable theft incidents in the Greater Manila Area (GMA) in the first half of 2024, a concerning uptrend that undermines efforts to expand connectivity amid steadily increasing demand.

From January to June 2024, Globe logged 906 cases of cable theft, a significant rise from 764 cases during the same period in 2023. June had the highest number of cases this year at 169 incidents.

Hotspot areas include Quezon City, where theft incidents affected Globe’s cable segments in Aurora, Project 8, and Roosevelt. Cables within Las Piñas, Makati, and Manila are also frequently targeted.

GMA accounted for about 61.55% percent of the total 1,472 cases logged nationwide in the first half of this year, reflecting a worrying trend of rising cable theft in the metropolis. This escalation poses a serious challenge to Globe’s efforts to enhance and expand its network across the region.

“We have seen a concerning increase in cable theft incidents in the Greater Metro Manila area, which also hosts a sizable population of our customer base. This means that for every cable cut, our individual customers lose precious hours of productivity, while businesses are deprived of their income potential,” said Joel Agustin, Globe head of service planning and engineering.

He cited how the impact of fiber cuts could be amplified in the region, which serves as the country’s economic center and seat of power.

“Fiber cuts are an urgent problem to solve, and we cannot do it alone. Our goal is to deepen our cooperation with government agencies, local government units, barangays, and law enforcement authorities so that together, we can tackle this menace and bring perpetrators to justice,” Agustin said.

Globe reiterates its call on the public to be vigilant and report sightings of cable theft incidents to the barangay or police station nearest them.

Yamaha PH racing, PAZ, nearly conquer the podium in Malaysia

For the Yamaha PH racing team, Round 5 of the ARRC last September 13-15 at the Petronas International Circuit in Malaysia had an exciting conclusion.

For the Yamaha Tekhne Racing Team Asia and McKinley Kyle Paz, they continue their quest to be at the top of the team standings. The consistency of Paz has seen him score points in different races with his top performance coming in 3rd place at the Chang International Circuit, Thailand.

Although he has yet to repeat that feat since then, he was closest this weekend. 7th on the grid, “The WonderBoy” almost returned to the podium in Race 2 with a 4th-place finish. It wasn’t an easy feat for Paz as he has pushed himself all season long to perform at the highest level. His dedication to his craft showed with his continued dominance in national races, which made him sharper for a higher level of competition in international competition. They are now just 7pts behind the top team in the standings and will look to be the best team in the final round of the season.

The UMA MMR Yamaha PH Racing Team continues to miss April King Mascardo, who is still recovering from his injury. This leaves Gian Carlo Mauricio alone on the grid. “The Flash” put up a gallant stand after starting from 16th place and finishing 7th in Race 1 to earn his team valuable points.

The last stand of the Yamaha PH Racing Team will be on December 6-8 at the Chang International Circuit, Thailand. The possible return of Mascardo may just be what the teams need for a big finish to their racing season.

TransUnion PH and Lista partner to offer easier consumer credit report access

TransUnion, the global information and insights company and the Philippines’ first comprehensive private credit reference agency, has announced a strategic partnership with Lista, one of the fastest-growing financial management apps in the country.

The partnership harnesses TransUnion Philippines’ database of consumer borrowing data, using its advanced scoring models to assess their risk profiles and present a credit score and credit report. The service is now easily available to Filipinos anywhere, anytime in the country, on Lista’s mobile portal.

A collaboration that helps extend financial inclusion

A healthy credit score is a powerful financial tool that influences everything from the interest rates lenders offer and the credit lines they extend to the decision to approve or reject a loan application. It affects a consumer’s ability to secure a mortgage, finance a car, or even start a business.

Credit card payments in the Philippines are expected to rise by 17.2% this year to reach PHP 3.4 trillion, made possible by considerable growth in the number of Filipinos who hold credit cards. According to TransUnion’s latest Credit Perception Index, 40% of Filipinos now own credit cards – a 15 percentage point increase from the same time last year. The Index also showed that Filipinos intend to take better control of their financial situations, with 72% planning to access more educational materials in the next year.

In addition to learning more about how to manage credit, it’s important that Filipinos regularly check their credit score and report, with routine checks now made even easier via Lista. Credit reports can also help consumers be vigilant about potential fraud schemes, as well as promote better financial literacy and increased financial inclusion.

Since 2011, TransUnion has been dedicated to helping Filipino consumers and businesses make better and more informed financial decisions with the innovative use of data and insights. This ambition echoes Lista’s purpose, which is to provide Filipinos with digital tools and resources to support their journey towards financial wellness. Both TransUnion and Lista share the goal of making Filipinos’ lives better by making financial resources more accessible.

Key service features for Filipinos who want to enjoy the benefits of the collaboration between the two companies include:

    1. A fully digitalized experience

Users can enjoy the convenience of requesting credit reports, validating identity documents, and settling payments through the Lista mobile app. This empowers consumers to manage their financial data anywhere, anytime.

    2. Instant credit score and credit report access

The process of requesting and receiving a consumer credit report with their credit score included can take as little as five minutes, allowing Filipinos to quickly access their credit information, better understand their financial health and make timely and informed decisions.

    3. Actionable tips for credit health

TransUnion credit reports include actionable insights to improve credit standing, build financial literacy, and foster healthy credit habits, helping consumers to take better control of their finances and make positive strides towards improvement.

“With credit card ownership growing and more Filipinos looking to borrow or use credit both in the short and long term, we believe this strategic partnership supports the national government’s goal of becoming an upper-middle-income economy,” she added.

“At Lista, we are committed to fostering financial literacy by helping Filipinos recognize the importance of fiscal responsibility as early in their financial journeys as possible,” said Khriztina Lim, co-founder and chief operating officer, Lista. “Through our collaboration with TransUnion, we aim to bridge the gap in financial literacy and accessibility to credit information in the Philippines.”

5G to be a key enabler for Digital Philippines, states Ericsson

Ericsson has unveiled its Ericsson Imagine Live 2024 roadshow in the Philippines, showcasing Ericsson’s advanced technology solutions and 5G use cases that are relevant for Philippines as it transitions to a digital economy.

    Ericsson

Speaking at the inaugural session of Ericsson Imagine Live, Andres Vicente, head of Ericsson Southeast Asia, Oceania, and India, highlighted the role of 5G infrastructure in accelerating the digitalization of the Philippines and ensuring its sustainable economic growth. “5G is an innovation platform for driving the digital transformation of businesses and society. Ericsson research shows that, on average, a 10% increase in mobile broadband adoption can increase economic growth (GDP) by up to 0.8%. At Ericsson, we look forward to partnering with the Philippines Government on its digitalization initiatives and towards building a strong digital infrastructure for the country through 5G.”

5G allows technologies such as AI and cloud computing to be leveraged at scale on top of secure, reliable, and always available 5G networks, thereby opening new possibilities for consumers and enterprises.

Digital transformation provides extensive opportunities for creating new value, gaining competitive advantage, and enabling cost savings for enterprises. For consumers, 5G would lead to more immersive experiences, faster download speeds, smoother video streaming, and more responsive gaming. Better connectivity also translates to better healthcare through telemedicine, improved education through remote learning, and better quality of life.

“More affordable 5G smartphones, a maturing 5G ecosystem, coupled with accelerated 5G deployments, will serve to boost 5G adoption in Philippines. Investments in 5G deployments will not only enhance 5G coverage but will also lead to a better quality of service for consumers,” states Daniel Ode, Head of Ericsson Singapore, Philippines, and Brunei. With more investments being made in 5G, over 40% of the total mobile subscriptions in the Philippines are expected to be on 5G by 2030.

According to the Ericsson Mobility Report, 5G is seeing a robust uptake worldwide, with 5G subscriptions reaching 1.9 billion globally at the end of Q2 2024. 5G mobile subscriptions are set to reach nearly 5.6 billion in 2029, making up 60 percent of all mobile subscriptions at that time. In the Philippines, 5G subscriptions currently stand at around 9% of the total mobile subscriptions.

Looking beyond the enhanced Mobile Broadband, there is a strong potential for Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) in the Philippines, given its challenging geography, limited infrastructure to deploy fixed broadband, and more than 40% rural population. According to an Ericsson Consumer Lab Study, 1 in 3 households in the Philippines rely on mobile connectivity (via FWA, smartphone, mobile hotspot, or similar) at home, indicating a strong appetite for a 5G FWA offering. Based on the right user experience being provided for people, there will be a massive adoption and opportunity for further uptake of FWA in the Philippines.

“The time to make investments in the 5G networks in the Philippines is now. 5G will serve as the critical infrastructure that will accelerate the digitalization of enterprises, transform consumer experiences and provide the country with a competitive edge when it comes to attracting foreign investments in the country,” states Andres Vicente.

Given its technology leadership and global deployment experience, Ericsson is well poised to support communication service providers in the Philippines in seamlessly transitioning to 5 G. Today, around 320 5G networks are in commercial service globally, and Ericsson is leading the market, powering 166 live 5G networks to date across five continents.

Ericsson is at the forefront of 5G around the world and is recognized as an industry leader by the Frost Radar: Global 5G Network Infrastructure Market report. Maintaining top ranking in the Frost Radar report over the past years has shown that Ericsson’s investments in R&D and across a wide product portfolio — which includes all areas of 5G network infrastructure as well as previous generations of network infrastructure — are valued in a market where technology is constantly evolving.

With its presence of more than 36 years in the Philippines, Ericsson remains committed to supporting the government’s digital agenda and enabling its customers, the communication service providers, to capture the value of 5G.

    Ericsson Imagine Live

The 5G use cases and demonstrations were organized in four zones:

    • Capture the Value of 5G for Consumers
    • Capture the Value of 5G for Enterprises
    • Shape our Future Together
    • Programmable Networks

Referring to the four zones in which the demos were organized, Andres Vicente stated that the advent of 5G is opening new opportunities for communications service providers (CSPs) both in the established mobile broadband business and through the exploration of new value pools.

    Ericsson

In the ‘Capture the value of 5G for Consumers’ zone, consumers can experience sports like never before with the Immersive Sports Fan experience demo, where a feature-rich app allows sports clubs to engage directly with their vast fan bases, creating new revenue streams. Leveraging network slicing and APIs, CSPs can ensure the immersive fan experience and gain revenue share. As per an Ericsson ConsumerLab Study on capturing 5G value: Turning performance into loyalty’, 5G users in the Philippines spend, on average, 25 minutes more per day than users in the 5G early adopter markets on data-demanding digital services such as streaming video in 4K/HD format, doing video calling, multiplayer mobile gaming, and e-sports.

    Ericsson

Another demo called ‘Superior Uplink for livestreams” offers seamless real-time livestreaming via commercially available smart glasses, overcoming the hindrance of 5G upload speeds with Uplink Carrier Aggregation. This technology boosts upload speeds by combining frequencies, enhancing performance, promoting 5G Standalone adoption, and optimizing spectrum utilization.

In the ‘Programmable Networks’ zone, Ericsson showcases how it is transforming the mobile network landscape by enabling sustainable and scalable service differentiation for premium 5G experiences with Service Level Agreement assurance, revolutionizing CSP offerings. Ericsson’s new software toolkit with advanced RAN and Core capabilities empowers CSPs to seize growth opportunities by providing differentiated connectivity at scale.

Another demo showcases how Ericsson’s RedCap technology supports CSPs’ business growth by reducing the complexity and size of device platforms for mid-tier use cases, expanding the 5G ecosystem to cater to diverse connectivity needs across consumer and enterprise/industrial segments on both FDD and TDD bands.

The ‘Capture the value of 5G for Enterprises”’ zone showcases how critical infrastructure industries such as mines, wind farms, and oil refineries can enhance worker safety and efficiency with 5G. Partnering with RealWear and OverIT, Ericsson is enabling secure, reliable, real-time access to complex data in order to provide an immersive connected worker experience for use in hazardous environments where accurate positioning and the ability to handle a high density of connected devices is required. The “Connected vehicles” demo explores the potential of connected vehicles along with how enterprise-grade connectivity can truly revolutionize transportation.

In the ‘Shape our Future Together’ zone, Ericsson is demonstrating high bandwidth-demanding use cases with world-leading brands such as Toyota and Sony using QoD API with network slicing. This underscores Ericsson’s thought leadership in the Network API and 5G monetization space, aligning with the Company’s strategy to build a platform business and its vision of industry cooperation with strong partners.

The zone also features “Teaching with technology” program which showcases the use of VR modules and ICT learning tools to help create a more engaging learning experience for students, helping them to retain knowledge, improve critical thinking, and develop digital skills. Students are enabled to interact with virtual students, in different immersive scenarios that mimic real-life classroom situations. More than 1,000 teachers from nine public high schools in the Philippines are currently participating in this program.

Six reasons that make the vivo V40 the best portrait camera in its class!

vivo and ZEISS started their partnership way back in 2020 with the groundbreaking vivo X60, which combines the former’s signature powerful yet aesthetically pleasing smartphones with the latter’s imaging pedigree. Now, almost four entire years later, the partnership between the two giants continues to produce awesome devices, this time in the form of the vivo V40. Dubbed as the latest “ZEISS Portrait Master,” here’s why the vivo V40 stands out among its peers in the camera department and beyond.

    1. All three cameras are ZEISS-approved

Headlining the vivo V40’s shooters is the powerful 50MP ZEISS OIS Main Camera equipped with a 1/1.56-inch Samsung ISOCELL GNJ sensor. This new sensor released just a few months ago promises to capture clearer images with better contrast and less optical aberrations than previous models. Thanks to its large surface area combined with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), photos will also be brighter and sharper even during low-light situations. Additionally, it is more power efficient which should mean longer device uptime for lengthy mobile photography sessions.

Supporting this main system is a 50MP ZEISS Ultra Wide-Angle Camera. With 6.5x the pixel count of a standard wide-angle camera, this shooter ensures that every detail is captured, whether it be Gen-Z group selfies, landscape shots, or cityscapes. Meanwhile, up front is a likewise 50MP ZEISS Group Selfie Camera with a wide f/2.0 aperture and 92° field of view.

Of course, all these shooters are co-engineered with ZEISS. Not only do you get high-quality shots thanks to the powerful innards, you also get ZEISS’ industry-leading color tuning and optical lenses. This translates to great captures without the need to fuss around with controls, deal with other camera apps, or tedious editing.

    2. Dedicated ZEISS Multifocal Portrait mode with natural-looking bokeh and colors

The cherry on top of the vivo V40’s already-amazing cameras is its ZEISS Multifocal Portrait mode. Accessible with just a tap of a button, this mode provides three focal lengths for even more professional-looking shots. Specifically, it features 24mm for travel and landscape photography; 35mm for environmental or street photography; and 50mm for half-body portraits. You can freely and easily switch between the three, making the vivo V40 a truly versatile shooter.

But what good is a dedicated portrait mode if subject detection and background blur (or bokeh) is obviously fake? Thankfully, the vivo V40 shines in this area as it features natural looking bokeh, helped along by ZEISS Style Portrait modes. These modes include Biotar, Planar, Distagon, Sonnar, Cinematic, B-Speed, and Cine-flare Portrait, each with distinct blur effects.

Lastly, a ZEISS Natural color mode is also available should you want more muted colors that are perfect for post-processing.

    3. The AI Aura Light is as useful as ever

vivo’s iconic AI Aura Light system returns in the V40 in case you need more lumens for your shots or if you want more flattering light on your subject. This new iteration boasts a 33% increase in brightness over its predecessor, making truly dim lighting scenarios no match for the vivo V40.

Even better, vivo is introducing its software-based AI 3D Studio Lighting technology for the first time to complement the Aura Light. This provides a 3D virtual fill light powered by AI algorithms to ensure even lighting on shadowed facial features in backlit scenarios and the like.

    4. Powerful yet efficient innards that keeps up with your photography needs and beyond

Benchmark scores of the vivo V40.

The vivo V40 isn’t just about great photos—it is also a powerhouse under the hood. It is equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 processor to ensure lag-free photo captures, smooth 4K video editing, snappy overall performance, and gaming prowess. It is mated to 12GB of RAM and either 256GB or 512GB of internal storage for smooth multi-tasking and all the storage you could ever want.

    5. Huge 5500mAh BlueVolt battery with 80W FlashCharge

The vivo V40 can go well over 20 hours on a single charge.

Despite its powerful innards, the vivo V40 is a marathoner. It is equipped with a 5500mAh battery—10% more than its predecessor—chargeable with the bundled 80W vivo FlashCharge USB-C cable and power brick. Not that you would need to charge it often in a day though. In fact, in the PCMark Work 3.0 battery test, the vivo V40 nailed an impressive 20 hours and 20 minutes of run time from 100% to 20% battery life. And when you do need to charge, rest assured you’ll only be spending less than an hour tethered to the wall.

    6. It looks great!

Wrapping the vivo V40 is a stylish body that comes in Nebula Purple which subtly shimmers thanks to Fluorite AG; Sunglow Peach which has a glossy glass finish with sparkling swatches; and Stellar Silver with AG technology and glossy anti-fingerprint coating. Its camera modules are arranged in a Gemini Ring design inspired by its constellation namesake, creating a simple, symmetrical, and clean looking back panel.

Finally, the vivo V40 comes in at a svelte 7.58mm, making it the brand’s slimmest phone with a 5500mAh power pack.
