Creators of Halo unveil Destiny, a persistent online multiplayer adventure

If you thought massively multiplayer online (MMO) games such as World of Warcraft and its many similar clones (AionRift, Tera etc.) were massive, the creators of the Halo series, Bungie, are throwing their hats into the MMO arena by creating the game DestinyDestiny is a “persistent online multiplayer adventure, designed on a galactic scale, that wants to become your new life.” Although many details are not known about the game at the moment, we do know that it will be released for at least the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360.

There is already a game that can also be considered as a persistent online multiplayer adventure—Second Life—but Bungie has teamed up with Activision to throw in a shooter element to the game, making this an FPS-MMO game like Borderlands and its sequel. Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg called Destiny a shared-world shooter. “We’re not doing this just because we have the tech,” Hirshberg said. “We have a great idea, and we’re letting the concept lead the tech.”

New development software was specifically created for Destiny. This new game is set in Earth’s solar system and takes place after a mysterious cataclysm wipes out most of humanity. The remaining survivors create a “safe zone” underneath a mysterious alien sphere called “The Traveler. The sphere imparts players with potent weapons, magic-like powers and defensive technology. Thanks to these gifts, people have begun reclaiming the solar system from alien invaders that moved in while humanity was down.

Bungie fired off a list of design principles that guide the game’s creation: “Create a world players want to be in. Make it enjoyable by players of all skill levels. Make it enjoyable by people who are ‘tired, impatient and distracted.’ In other words, you don’t have to be loaded for bear and pumped for the firefight of your life every time you log on.”

Bungie promised a lot of elements already available in MMOs—solo, cooperative and competitive content, otherwise known as questing, player vs. environment (PvE), and player vs. player (PvP) in the MMO world, but didn’t go into too much detail regarding that. Bungie also said that said that there would be a very specialized artificial intelligence (AI) working entirely behind the scenes to have players encounter other players based on their experience levels and other factors. This is already employed in a limited manner in some MMOs, where you use dungeon finders to match up of players of your level.

Bungie showed off three distinct character classes: the hunter, the titan and the warlock. Although no differences were outlined between them apart from the warlock being able to use a sort of techno-magic, Bungie did say that each character in Destiny would be highly customized and unique, and will grow with the player over an extended period of time.

Another major detail it revealed was its massive scale. Bungie has 350 developers working on the game. They also said that they would be able to craft environments and worlds at speeds once thought unreachable. Bungie’s malleable team system was also said to increase its output. With the ability to co-locate designers, artists, and engineers at any time, Bungie says it can go through exceptionally rapid on-the-spot iteration and improvement for each facet of the game, which could possibly mean that server maintenance, a necessary evil of current MMOs, might be done away with completely.

Another thing (and possibly the most important thing) that Bungie said was that there will be no monthly subscription fees to play Destiny. MMOs currently charge an average of between USD$10 to USD$15 a month to play, on top of the cost of the game. However, you will need a constant connection to the Internet. “Since the core concept of Destiny is exploring a world that exists outside of the player’s console and is populated by real people at all times, it will need to be connected in order for someone to play,” said Bungie chief operating officer Pete Parsons.

    Review: Fujifilm XF1

    Meet the Fujifilm XF1

Compact cameras are evolving faster than ever. Some of them offer full manual shooting modes. Some have Wi-Fi and GPS capabilities. Some even have operating systems in them. The industry just keeps putting more and more power into the pocket camera. For some users, though, these devices still won’t do, and they look for something just as portable, but can give them as much control over the lens as a DSLR. An interchangeable lens camera is an option, but is still too bulky to fit in an average-sized pocket. So, what should this type of consumer choose? The Fujifilm XF1 is a worthy alternative, and we think it deserves a closer look.

The Fujifilm XF1 is a compact camera with a slight twist. It enables you to manually operate the zoom function—a feat that is rare to point-and-shoot cameras. This, combined with full manual control over shutter speed and aperture, plus the ability to shoot in RAW, makes the XF1 a good option for serious photography enthusiasts who want a compact camera they can tote. Inside the XF1 is a 12.0-megapixel 2/3-inch EXR CMOS sensor and EXR image processor.

Fujifilm’s EXR CMOS sensors have a very carefully crafted pixel array that, as the company claims, ensures optimum resolution, high sensitivity, low noise, and a wide dynamic range. The EXR processor, on the other hand, is responsible for the quickness of the device’s response: start-up is approximately 0.55 seconds when the Quick Start mode is switched on, AF lock is about 0.16 seconds, and continuous shooting checks in at a speed of 10 frames per second (fps). This intricate technology comes in a small, stylish package.

LG Optimus G Pro official, 5.5-inch full-HD display, LTE, 1.7GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor

LG’s 5.5-inch, full-HD followup to their Optimus G, the Optimus G Pro has finally gone official in the firm’s home country of Korea. The Optimus G Pro is slated to go head-to-head with this year’s gigantic 5-inch flagship devices, and boy does it have the hardware to do so. The Optimus G Pro sports a 5.5-inch full-HD display which gives it a pixel density of 400 ppi, putting it in the same league as the HTC Buttefly and the Huawei Ascend D2 as far as screen resolution is concerned.

It’s also one of the first devices to use Qualcomm’s newly minted Snapdragon 600 processor that the company announced during CES at the start of the year, touting a quad-core 1.7GHz processor paired off with 2GB of RAM. There’s 32GB of internal memory on tap which can be further expanded to a further 32GB by a microSD card. The Optimus G Pro will also have a 13-megapixel camera, as well as a inordinately large  3,140mAh removable battery that’s also wireless charging capable. It’ll come with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean when it’s released. Speaking of release dates, Korea will be the first stop of the Optimus G Pro, retailing for 968,000 won, or about Php 36,448 excluding taxes and duties.

Here’s a simple DIY project to help you stay cool this summer.

    0

Summer is very fast approaching. It may be a little early this year, and short of suggesting staying home all day with your tech, there is, sadly, very little we here at Gadgets can do for you. There is a little DIY summer project here from Cockeyed.com that you can do with your kids (or yourself) to get a quick juicy slushie you can enjoy and make your summer a little more tolerable. It’s basically a method by which you can get your favorite juice icy and delicious in a few short seconds that doesn’t need any super complicated inverter technology, fancy devices or strange technology. Its totally child safe and requires nothing more than a zip-top bag, some sugar and your favorite juice. In a nutshell, you mix some sugar into some water to the point of super saturating the liquid. The sugar keeps the water inside the bags from freezing and allows the bag to drop in temperature well below freezing, and allowing it to freeze your juice instantly. If you’re looking for a nice, fun summer activity that lets you teach a little bit of science on the side, hit the cockeyed.com link HERE.

The Transparent Smartphone. It’ll be here soon.

    0

Tech has always promised us bigger and better things, but to be honest, smartphones have hit something of a plateau for me. We do get bigger and faster processors, sharper screens and all that usual stuff, but we haven’t really had a massive change for a long time now. Taiwanese company Polytron Technologies is set to change the scene in a big way very very soon with a revolutionary concept: The transparent smartphone. It’s as awesome as you think it is. The secret behind the device is a spacial king of OLED display that switches from clear to opaque as current is passed through it. The current incarnation od the phone isn’t completely clear, as some of the internal components are still the same as we see them now, but the company has plans to make it look even better by its promised launch date of late 2013. The current device also has no OS (it’s very deeply in development at the moment) but it’s good enough to see the potential of the thing. It’s going to be all sorts of awesome, and is another awesome case of Hollywood making things awesome for everyone. If you want to know more, head over to this link HERE (via the verge).

Dropbox 2.1 for iOS rolls out, features new PDF viewer

    0

Just this week, Dropbox rolled out version 2.1 for its iOS app, throwing in a jazzed up PDF viewer.

The PDF viewer now allows users to look for any keyword or phrase in a file using a nifty search button. Users are also able to view pages of a PDF file in thumbnails, so jumping from one page to another is now easier.

Also included in the update are the option to receive push notifications whenever someone wants to share a folder with you, as well as the ability to sort files by date modified.

The Dropbox Android app doesn’t have its own PDF viewer yet, but it does offer the push notification option for shared folder invites.

Facebook target of sophisticated hacking attack, no user data was compromised

Facebook reported yesterday that they have been a target of a sophisticated hacking attempt which resulted in malicious code being installed on company machines.

“Last month, Facebook Security discovered that our systems had been targeted in a sophisticated attack. This attack occurred when a handful of employees visited a mobile developer website that was compromised. The compromised website hosted an exploit which then allowed malware to be installed on these employee laptops,” said the company in their official blog. “The laptops were fully-patched and running up-to-date anti-virus software,” they added.

The company says that the perpetrators used a zero-day exploit, or an unknown vulnerability in Java software to gain access to the computers. Once the company learned of the breach, they took corrective measures and informed both the authorities and Oracle about the exploit. “As soon as we discovered the presence of the malware, we remediated all infected machines, informed law enforcement, and began a significant investigation that continues to this day,” they said.

While the company’s computers may have been compromised, Facebook says that no user accounts have been taken. The company believes that they are not alone in this particular situation, as dozens of other hi-profiles sites were attacked over the previous days. “Facebook was not alone in this attack. It is clear that others were attacked and infiltrated recently as well. As one of the first companies to discover this malware, we immediately took steps to start sharing details about the infiltration with the other companies and entities that were affected. We plan to continue collaborating on this incident through an informal working group and other means.”

LTO and Suzuki partner up for another year of the Motorcycle Safety Learn to Ride Program

    0

Thanks to the success of last year’s Motorcycle Safety Learn to Ride Program, Suzuki Philippines President Satoshi Uchida and LTO Assistant Secretary Virginia Torres have jointly decided to bring back the program for a second year running. The program, a joint endeavor between Suzuki Philippines, the Land Transportation Office and the Motorcycle Philippines Federation, seeks to decrease the number of motorcycle road accidents in the country by educating riders of different skill levels. Last year, the program was able to reach eight different universities, including the University of Sto. Tomas and the Mapua Institute of Technology.

“The participants are thankful for te program, especially those students who use the motorcycle, but didn’t get the proper training,” Mr. Uchida  said. Both the LTO and Suzuki have determined the program a success, and agree that it is slowly gaining top of mind recall among riders, when it comes to safety.

To further strengthen the partnership, Suzuki has donated 16 motorcycles and 32 helmets for use in the various LTO branches for use with the Safety riding program. Interested participants for the program may sign up with Suzuki through their customer care hotline at 902-1001 or email their intent to join, along with their name, age, contact information and addresses to [email protected]

The good news is that Namco Bandai has released an official Tamagotchi Android app to celebrate the digital pet’s 16 year anniversary. The new app allows you to do everything you were able to with the game and throws in a couple of new features which includes color, improved image resolution and Facebook sharing. The bad news is that while it’s available for free at the Google Play store, it’s currently not available for our country, the Philippines, which is kind of a bummer, especially since we’re pretty sure there’s tons of Generation Y kids out there just wanting to play with their old pals again.

First Impressions: Say hello to Sony’s NEX-6!

New toy alert! Sony’s latest mirrorless interchangeable-lens model, the NEX-6, recently arrived in the Gadgets office, and today, we’re here to give you our first impressions.

The folks at the DP Review described it quite aptly as a mix of the enthusiast-oriented functionality of the NEX-7 and the wireless connectivity of the NEX-5R. Packing both full manual control and Wi-Fi capabilities, think of it as a more compact alternative to a DSLR that throws in additional features that appeal to today’s mobile users.

Inside the NEX-6 is a 16.1-megapixel Exmor APS-C CMOS sensor and a BIONZ image processor. It features a hybrid autofocus (AF) system that combines phase detection AF and contrast detection AF to achieve more speed and precision. The NEX-6 has an ISO range of 100-25600.

Examining its build quality, the NEX-6 looks and feels solid and durable. It is, however, heavier than expected. The NEX-6 has a polycarbonate body, unlike the NEX-7 which dons a metal shell.

Like the NEX-7 and unlike the NEX-5, the NEX-6 hosts an electronic viewfinder dubbed as the XGA OLED Tru-Finder. It has a 2,359K-dot resolution and has a very good level of contrast and saturation—not overly vivid, but not too pale as well. The LCD screen fares just as well. It measures 3.0 inches and features a 921,600-dot resolution. It’s not a touchscreen, but it still is pretty roomy, and the great thing about it is it’s tiltable.

The power switch/shutter release and function buttons are placed atop the protruding grip. I’d like to add on a personal note that the grip fits in my hand just fine; it isn’t too deep nor is it too shallow. Not only does it have a flexible pop-up flash on top; it also hosts a multi-interface hotshoe so that you can mount an external speedlite.

The dedicated video recording button can be found at the right edge—yes, the edge—of the body. I find the placement of the button a bit odd, especially since thumbs don’t normally graze that part of the camera’s body. The position of the electronic viewfinder (EVF) is awkward, too. Viewfinders placed on the upper left of the device instead of the center are still something I find hard to get used to since I have to place the eye on the edge of the camera when shooting in portrait orientation.

A dedicated mode dial sits on top, making the NEX-6 the first camera in the Sony’s mirrorless series to have one. If you look closer, you’ll see that another dial is placed underneath it. This secondary dial controls the aperture. The shutter speed can be tweaked using the dial/navigation pad on the back of the device.

The back of the device is also where the menu and delete buttons are found—although they aren’t labeled—together with the playback, auto exposure lock and flash buttons. On its side are the USB and HDMI ports, while underneath it is the battery compartment that is kept hidden under a little door together with the full-sized SD card slot.

Mounted on the NEX-6, we have an E PZ 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 OSS power zoom lens that wields a collapsible barrel design that makes it compact and convenient when not in use.

After a quick run through the menu, I found that the interface was pretty messy, but luckily the camera features a Quick Navi menu that lets you access settings such as image size, white balance and exposure settings directly on the display.

You can also use your smartphone as a remote trigger and/or viewfinder, as well as to wirelessly transfer photos from the camera to your tablet or smartphone. You would, however, need to download the PlayMemories mobile app for Android and iOS, but the good news is that the app is free.

This heavy-hitter is available at a suggested retail price of PHP 40,999. That’s quite a big number, but is it worth the cash-out? We’ll be doing a full review in the magazine soon, so be sure not to miss any of our upcoming issues!

iOS 6.1 bug allows people to bypass your lock screen

A security flaw in the recent iOS 6.1 patch has been discovered by users and allows them to bypass your lockscreen. The flaw was first documented by YouTube user videosdebarraquito, and involves making and immediately cancelling an emergency call and pressing and holding down the power button twice. The good news is that Apple is already aware of this issue and is working hard on a software patch to fix this issue.
