Miss the days when gaming was good? Play Dune II right on your browser!

    0

Gaming now is a really complicated affair. You’re going to need a dual SLI setup, monster amounts of RAM, a 16-core processor and cooling enough for a walk-in freezer. Gaming was once much simpler, and now you can relive those days right from your browser. A mad Russian Computer scientist Aleksander Guryanov put together a browser-based version of Dune II through HTML 5/Javascript that will probably work on whatever browser you have installed. For those who were’nt around/around long before, Dune II is an RTS that is set in Frank Herbert’s Dune universe. It borrows a lot of the elements from Command and Conquer, so if you’re  a hardcore RTS gamer, you should give this title a shot. It is optimized for desktop browsers, but reports have said that it seems to tun okay on Android’s Chrome. Head over to this LINK and give it a shot.

Wanna take apart your gun? There’s an app for that.

    0

In the world of firearms enthusiasts, there are gun nuts, and there are those people who gun nuts think take their love of guns too seriously. If you are from the camp of the latter, you’re going to want to know just what makes your favorite firearm tick. Unfortunately, not everyone has access to some of the hard-to-find guns in the world. Fortunately, there’s an app for that. Gun Disassembly 2 for Android, iOS, Windows and Mac gives you a library of over 60 handguns, SMGs and Rifles that you can take apart down to the last pin. That’s over 5100 parts that you have complete access to. The app allows you to operate the guns, take them apart and even make parts transparent so you can see the individual parts at work. It even allows you to attach supressors, optics and other accessories, in case you have a gun project that you want to try. Best of all, it’s absolutely free. If you’re interested, head over to the App store for iOS, Google Play, get the EXE or the Mac App store and give it a shot.

iOS app compiles one second of each day of your life

    0

Recording a video clip of one second of each day of your life? There’s an app for that.

The 1 Second Everyday (1SE) app, developed by Cesar Kuriyama and Alchemy50, lets you select videos from your iPhone’s camera roll, choose one second of each video, and arrange them seamlessly in chronological order on a timeline.

You can also create multiple timelines within the app. For instance, if you want to keep a timeline of your life in general, and a separate timeline for videos of your pets or your kids. Users can compile videos in any given time frame; all you have to do is select start and end dates.

Since the app has access to your camera roll, you can shoot your videos with the iPhone’s native camera app. However, 1SE also lets you record videos directly on the app. Once your timeline is complete, the app gives you the option of keeping the video to yourself or posting your compilations directly on YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook, Twitter, Google+ or Tumblr.

Kuriyama made an open call for pledges on Kickstarter last month in order to gather funds to finish the app. The project has already reached its financial goal three days ago. It’s not available on the App Store yet, but according to a post on the project’s Facebook page, the app will be sold for USD $1. Kuriyama also says that he plans on working on an Android version of the app.

Cycloramic app takes panoramic videos by letting iPhone 5 spin itself on flat surface

    0

A video app called Cycloramic utilizes the latest iPhone’s vibration motors to make shooting panorama videos easy and handsfree.

The vibration motors automatically spin it around either 360, 720 or 1080 degrees on a flat surface as it records the video. While the typical orientation in shooting panorama videos or images is landscape, the app lets you record in portrait mode.

Cycloramic costs USD $0.99. Below is a sample video recorded with the app from the folks over at The Verge.

LG Display wants to ban Samsung’s Galaxy Note 10.1 in Korea

While Samsung’s fight with Apple is well publicized, the Korean company is also fighting a patent skirmish with fellow Korean company LG. LG Display has asked a Seoul court to ban domestic sales of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 10.1, citing that it infringes on patents that LG holds. Samsung has allegedly violated 3 patents that LG possesses.

“Through this action, LG Display seeks to completely stop the sale, manufacture and importation of the infringing Samsung product,” the firm said in a press release. The company is also looking for compensation to the tune of  1 billion won (US$933,000) per day for non-compliance if they are victorious.

It seems that LG wants to get the Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet completely banned in their home country, which includes importation, retail and even manufacturing. Unsurprisingly  Samsung has responded, with Shim Jaeboo, a vice president of Samsung Display, saying that the company didn’t infringe LG’s patents and it will respond to “unjustified claims” made by LG.

New set of pictures show off the BlackBerry Z10

The past few days has seen a flurry of BlackBerry 10 leaks, and today is no exception. This time around, we’re treated to full size, non-blurry product shots of the upcoming BlackBerry 10 device – the Z10. While the new images show us nothing that we already don’t know, it gives us a better look at the upcoming device from RIM.

And you know what? We like how it looks. The design is modern, monolithic and while the color scheme isn’t exactly revolutionary, the externals don’t look too shabby. We’re still hoping that the internals match up to the otherwise perfect externals so far. Will it be enough to save RIM? No one can say, but if they manage to launch BB10 and their accompanying devices without a hitch, maybe there’s hope.

Microsoft enticing iOS developers to make apps for Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8

In today’s world, ecosystems are won and lost by the number of apps that are present on it. So it’s no surprise that Microsoft is trying to lure iOS developers into making apps for both Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8. Microsoft has a lot of catching up to do – Google and Apple have around 700,000 apps present on Android and iOS, while the Redmond company only has around 100,000 present on their Windows store. So that’s probably why they invited a select number of iOS developers out to company’s headquarters to talk about making Windows apps. According to MIT’s Technology Review, the app developers liked Microsoft’s bold attempt but voiced concerns about their decision to use one operating software for PCs, phones, and tablets, mainly because making apps to run on all three is a nightmare.

Samsung Galaxy S IV rumored to be coming April with S-Pen functionality

    0

There are fresh rumors straight out of Korea about the successor to Samsung’s wildly popular Galaxy S flagship, the Galaxy S IV. The new device will supposedly launch in April and will come with S-Pen functionality – the same S-Pen functionality that’s present on their Galaxy Note line of phablets. This will unite the Galaxy S line of devices with the company’s Note line, although at this point in time we can’t really say if this is a good thing or not. The device, much like other rumored flagship devices coming out in 2013, will feature a 5-inch, 1080p display along with a quad-core Exynos 5440 processor and Jelly Bean on board. Rounding out the supposed feature list is a 13-megapixel camera, along with slightly thicker 9.2mm body.

    Sony ceases PlayStation 2 production

Sony has stopped production of the PlayStation 2 in Japan, ceasing production of a console that defined the sixth generation of gaming consoles and sold over 150 million units since its debut in 2000. Effectively, that means there will be no more new PlayStation 2 consoles once all available stock is gone. The PlayStation 2 far outsold all other home consoles, with another Sony product, the original PlayStation, coming in at second place at 102.49 million consoles sold. The original PlayStation ceased production in 2006.

Some of the best selling games on the PlayStation 2 include Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which is its top-selling game with 17.33 million copies sold, and also had many popular and successful game franchises carry over from the PlayStation, such as Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy, and Need for Speed, just to name a few.

The PlayStation 2 is the last console to cease production from the sixth generation of consoles. The Sega Dreamcast ceased production in 2001, and the Microsoft Xbox and Nintendo GameCube ceased their production in 2007. The PlayStation 2 was also the only backwards compatible console in the sixth generation of video game consoles, meaning it could also play games from the original PlayStation.

Swiss lab aims to finish tendon-driven humanoid in nine months

The Artificial Lab of the University of Zurich in Switzerland is currently developing a humanoid robot with a tendon-driven locomotion system, and just like your typical human offspring, they aim to finish the robot in only nine months.

The team behind Roboy—as the project in progress is called—began developing the robot in May of this year. Their goal is to be able to present a finished Roboy at the annual worldwide robotics fair, Robots On Tour, which will be held this year on March 8, 2013 in the University of Zurich.

To be able to finish Roboy before their self-imposed deadline, the team has decided to pool resources through crowd funding and private sponsorships. In exchange for contributions, each supporter will have his/her name or logo (if the supporter is a company or an institution) engraved on a part of Roboy. Other rewards await contributors, depending on the amount that is donated. Below is a full list (from the project’s web site) of the amounts of money one can donate and their corresponding incentives.

Those involved in the project have expressly declared in their web site that Roboy is an open source project, which means that “all expertise, ideas and inventions” do not belong exclusively to a specific project partner and that “every one will have the right to advance Roboy’s technologies.”

The financial goal set for the project is 500,000 Swiss francs. As of today, the project has reached more than half of its goal, as supporters have already contributed 293,950.

Asiasoft Online schedules Ragnarok Online 2 open beta on January 3, Porings around the world shudder in fear

Ragnarok Online, that massively multiplayer online game that started the MMORPG craze in the Philippines has a massive following even after existing for more than a decade. It’s not surprising then that its sequel, Ragnarok 2 has been hotly anticipated by both local and international gamers. Asiasoft Online initially scheduled the open beta for Ragnarok Online 2 for December 27, unfortunately their servers were hammered bad by the sheer number of players who wanted in the Poring smashing action that they crashed it. Subsequently, Asiasoft has rescheduled the open beta for RO2 on January 3, which allows you some time to say goodbye to your significant other and your family before you go back to the realm of Asgardia. Unfortunately people who managed to get in the RO2 action early will have their characters reset by the time January 3 rolls around, possibly in a bid to ensure everyone has a fair footing when the January 3 opening is announced. You can follow their official Facebook page at to get real-time updates about the game.

[INFOGRAPHIC] Just how big is Android?

    1

If you haven’t realized it by now, let us say it again: Android is the biggest mobile OS in the planet today. But just how big is Google’s mobile OS? Well, the folks at MBAOnline sent us a handy infographic detailing just how huge the OS has become. While we’re not going to list all the things in it one by one (that’d be silly, just read the infographic) here’s some highlights: 250 million Android devices are activated every year (we’re assuming that the numbers are from 2011) and 1.3 million devices are activated every day. In comparison, only 104.7 million iPads and iPhones has been activated in 2011, while daily iOS device activations are only 515,000. Here’s another surprising tidbit from that infographic: Microsoft’s licensing deal with HTC that awards the Redmond company $5 for every Android device sold by the Taiwanese company has actually made them more money than their Windows Phone OS. Hilarious ain’t it?

Toshiba making camera module that allows you to refocus the picture after you take the shot

Out of focus pictures are usually a pain in the behind, but Toshiba wants all of that to change soon, as far as cameras in smartphones and tablets are concerned. The Japanese company has developed a camera module that can be placed in a tablet or smartphone that allows you to refocus the shot, even after you’ve taken a picture. The technology is similar to the one found in the Lytro camera, though significantly smaller.

Toshiba’s camera module contains a dense array of 500,000 lenses, each 0.03 millimeter in diameter, in front of an image sensor measuring 5 mm x 7 mm. The lenses capture different images and software in the camera combines it to make a bigger image.

The new camera will also be able to take videos with the same refocus effect as the one with just the images, which should make for some interesting footage. The company is calling on different smartphone manufacturers to adopt the new technology, which the company hopes to come out next year.
