Asus PadFone 2 official: 4.7-inch display, quad-core processor, slimmer, lighter tablet dock, prices start at Php 25,500

Asus’ latest and greatest has been subject to a number of leaks already, but nothing beats getting the official word from the company itself. The device was finally launched at a simultaneous event in Europe and Taiwan, and it seems that the new device is a significant improvement over the old product. For one, the screen is a 4.7-inch Super IPS+ panel made by Sharp, which should deliver better images than the original. A Qualcomm Snapdragon Pro quad-core processor lies under the hood, which is paired with 2GB of RAM. One of the major changes of the new model over the previous one is imaging – the PadFone 2 now sports a 13-megapixel f/2.4 BSI sensor equipped camera that has the capabilityof shooting 1080p video at 30fps, 720p at 60fps and has the ability of shooting up to 100 shots at full resolution. As expected, the PadFone 2 will sport Android 4.1 Jelly Bean right out of the box. There will be multiple versions of this particular device when it comes to radio frequencies, with LTE versions appearing later on depending on the location of the market. There’s also NFC on tap as well.

The tablet base station has also been upgraded. It’s still a 10.1-inch deal with 1280 x 800 display, but this time around it’s slimmer and lighter (514g without the phone inside). The battery has been cut down a bit (5,000mAh compared to old one’s 6,600mAh), but that’s not really much of an issue because of the more efficient processor and the upgraded battery one the main smartphone unit (2,140mAh).

So, how much will it cost? Well, Asus has prices start at NT$17,990, which is about 25,516 without taxes. The phone and slate bundle goes for NT$23990, or about Php 34036 without taxes, which is pretty reasonable, if you ask us. Unfortunately, no local pricing or availability has yet been set for this product – we’ll let you guys know as soon as we get word.

Asus introduces ET2701 All-in-One PC Series optimized for Windows 8

With the October 26 release date of Windows 8 looming, it makes sense that manufacturers would want to get the word out on their products as soon as possible before being crushed by the wave of inevitable press releases from competing brands. Asus is one such manufacturer, and has detailed their next generation touch-optimized ET2701 AiO. This particular AiO uses a 27-inch touch-sensitive VA panel that delivers 178° viewing angle, which means that it should look good no matter how you look at it. The display maxes out at 1920 x 1080 resolution-wise, so watching full HD movies shouldn’t be a problem with it. It’ll come in different flavors when it comes to processor speeds (starts with Intel’s Core i3-3220 processor and is available all the way up to the i7-3770S) and will come with NVIDIA’s GT640M discrete graphics. For storage, you’re looking at up to 2TB (depending on configuration), with up to 8GB for RAM (again, depending on the configuration). Asus says that the ET2701 AiO will come with a price tag of PhP 73,800, though it’s not clear what particular configuration that amount of money fetches you.

LG Nexus Prototype gets reviewed ahead of unveil

    0

The next Nexus device made by LG has been unceremoniously reviewed by technology site Onliner. The Russian site has managed to get a pre-release version of the device, which obviously means there’s still a lot of things that need to be done before it gets out to the market. The site has said that the current performance of the device doesn’t mirror one that’s supposedly powered by a quad-core Qualcomm S4 Pro processor, which further highlights the pre-release nature of the device. Still, it’s nice to finally see the overall appearance of the device, which should be announced sooner rather than later.

Have you listened to your barcode lately?

    0

Barcodes are nothing new. They have been around for decades as a way of storing a little bit of machine-readable information in a suitably small space. There have been other advancements in this realm that are just as interesting, such as QR codes, but even that has started to become a little boring. Chris Harrison, a rather clever researcher, has recently developed a little trick to the barcode that is so simple, you’ll wonder how nobody has ever thought of it before. All it requires is a bunch of lines, etched into any surface, and a mic. Run something across the surface, and the mic picks up the unique pattern and executes a command. It’s so simple, elegant and clever, you can’t help but be even just a little amused. We’re not sure just what advantages this will have, but we like the idea just the same.

Apple supposedly announcing the iPad Mini on October 23

    0

Pretty much everybody knows that Apple is releasing a smaller, cheaper version of their iPad soon, though no one has any idea when the actual launch will happen. Well, AllThingsD has said that the unveil will be held on the 23rd of October, according several people close to the matter. Unfortunately, there’s not much information on the actual device itself, aside from the rumored 7.85-inch display. Seems like we’ll know in a few days what the new device will look like.

iPhone 5 usage surpasses Galaxy S III in the US according to study

While there’s a lot of smartphone brands out in the market today, it’s undeniable that the two top contenders in the market are Apple and Samsung. Both have their top tier device in the market out now, and it seems that Apple’s iPhone 5 has overtaken Samsung’s top tier device in terms of web usage in the US. Research Firm Chitika has measured web stats stemming from mobile ad impressions on both devices, and it seems that there’s a lot more web traffic coming from Apple’s iPhone 5 compared to Samsung’s Galaxy S III spanning a 7-day time frame from October 3rd through October 9th, 2012. It’s not surprising given the high demand for Apple’s latest device, though it’ll be interesting to see what the usage statistics are in the rest of the world.

This is the future of BlackBerry: L Series phone and BlackBerry 10 leaked by BlackBerry exec in video

If you were wondering where BlackBerry was going in terms of their future phones and phone designs, you needn’t have to go far. Mexican site Hola Telcel has managed to get video of a demo of an L-series phone running BlackBerry 10 from a BlackBerry rep, of all people (the original Vimeo link has been taken out, though website AllAboutPhones have graciously uploaded it to their channel). The video is completely in Spanish, but that’s not really much of an issue since most of what’s happening on the device is pretty self-explanatory. Whether this particular device demo was approved by the folks higher up in the food chain doesn’t matter; what does matter is that we’re liking what we’re seeing on the video – the “best shot” feature is particularly interesting, which should result in less cringe-worthy photos in the near future. The predictive onscreen keyboard is also pretty good, which should come as no surprise given that BlackBerry is a company that specializes in messaging. Watching the video gives us a lot of hope that the company may still turn their fortunes around with the new devices – hopefully they can flush out the kinks in the system and get their wares out before the year ends.

Asus PadFone 2 leaked ahead of launch, larger 4.7-inch display, thinner tablet dock

It’s still a few days away from the Oct. 15 reveal date that Asus mandated for the PadFone 2, but it seems the device has already been leaked to the public. Bloomberg TV has had the opportunity to take an early look at the device in a YouTube video, and it seems that the screen size of the new smartphone has been increased to 4.7-inches, no doubt to combat other, similarly sized devices. On the back is a 13-megapixel camera, which looks to be an excellent shooter, based on the sample pictures on the video. If videos aren’t enough, a Twitter user by the name of @evleaks have shown promotional shots of the device as well, which reveals an overall thinner tablet dock compared to the original.

With over 30 years in the business, Monster knows exactly how to get the purest sound from your device, into your ears, and makes sure you get to do it in style. Samsung Galaxy III Mini official, dual-core 1GHz NovaThor U8420 processor, 4-inch display, 5-megapixel camera, Android 4.1 on-board

We talked about the supposed leak of Sammy’s latest product, the Galaxy S III Mini the other day, and lo and behold, it’s finally here. The initial leak of the device is pretty much spot on, and the only thing that was iffy was the processor – this particular device will be running a dual-core, 1GHz NovaThor U8420 processor. All the other specs stay the same – 4-inch Super AMOLED 800×480 display, 5-megapixel camera, 1GB of RAM and 16/32GB capacities, depending on what you fancy. The device will be powered by Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, so you’ll be getting all that Project Butter goodness and actionable notifications when you pick it up when it goes on sale. It still a bit puzzling why Samsung would release a smaller version of their Galaxy S III (especially since the original one was pretty ace to begin with) but the Korean company might know something that we don’t. No word on price or local availability as of this time.

    Sony unveils α99, world’s first full-frame DSLT

    0

Yesterday Sony locally introduced its newest edition to the Alpha family—the α99. It is the world’s 35mm full-frame DSLT (Digital Single Lens Trnaslucent mirror) camera.

For those who are not familiar with the Translucent Mirror Technology, here’s a short video that explains the differences between this new technology and that of DSLRs.

The α99 wields a 24.3-megapixel Exmor CMOS sensor and a BIONZ image processor that delivers 14-bit RAW output. It hosts the world’s first Dual AF system, which means that it has two AF sensors—a 19-point phase detection AF sensor and a 102-point focal plane phase detection AF sensor. This is made possible by Sony’s Translucent Mirror Technology.

The α99 has two new AF modes. The AF-D mode employs the 19+102 AF points to stay locked on moving subjects. The AF Range Control mode allows you to control the AF to operate within a certain range of distance.

Alpha Product Manager Zaidi Jantan shows the media how to use the AF-D mode
Jantan explains the AF Range Control mode

Its electronic viewfinder, dubbed as the XGA OLED Tru-Finder, gives you 100% coverage and allows you to automatically see what happens to your image when you adjust the settings—similar to what happens in mirrorless cameras.

Jantan shows the Quick Navi Pro function

The Quick Navi Pro gives you access to all the adjustable shooting elements, like ISO level, exposure values, and white balance on a single menu. It has a dual SD card slot, on which you can simultaneously record still images and videos, and a 3-way tiltable LCD that’s extra useful when shooting at odd angles.

This new camera is targeted not just at professional photographers, but also videographers. It hosts several handy features that cater to professional videographers. It can shoot Full HD videos at 60fps and allows you to see and control the audio levels. The camera has a ready-to-use headphones jack, and you can purchase the optional XLR-K1M kit, which gives you a high-quality mono shotgun mic that can be attached to the camera’s hotshoe. There’s also an optional speedlight that integrates a video light as well, making it a perfect companion for the α99.

The α99 also has full-time continuous AF during movie recording. Best of all, it has an ultra-handy and customizable silent multi-controller knob that lets you tinker with the settings while shooting without making any noise.

Additionally, Sony Philippines Director for Digital Imaging Yung Yap announced that in this year’s Sony World Photography Awards, there will be a “Philippines Award” to be given to the top three entries from the country. Yap says that everyone is allowed to join, and the entries will be judged by the World Photography Organization.

The α99 will available in November at will have an SRP of PHP 139,999 (body-only kit). The media guests at the launch were given the chance to try the α99 out in teams. Here are some of the shots that our team took:

    Continuous shooting

Gear4 outs AirZone Series 1 wireless home stereo to the Philipines

Aside from Angry Birds branded speakers, Gear4 also unveiled their flagship product at an event earlier today. The AirZone Series 1 is a wireless speaker dock that utilizes Apple’s AirPlay technology. While this particular tech is present on other, more expensive devices, the AirZone Series 1 is one of the most affordable speaker docks that boast the technology. Of course, there’s still a physical docking port located on the front for people who still want to do it the OG way. Want one? Of course you do. You can expect to shell out Php 11,590 for the privilege of owning one.

Gear4 outs Angry Birds branded speakers and docks, overwhelms everyone with cuteness

We’re fresh from the Gear4 event earlier tonight, curious to see what the UK company is bringing to our shores. Well, aside from the usual wireless speaker offerings, the company has also outed official Angry Birds licensed merchandise in the form of portable speakers and speaker docks.

These docks have the likenesses of different characters in the game which include the villainous ambassadors of bacon, the pigs. There are different models available, which include the simple external rechargeable speaker, to more complicated ones like the Pig-dock.

Unfortunately, it looks like the dock models are all using Apple’s old connector, which means you will have to use the included adapter if you have an iPhone 5 or the upcoming iPod, Nano and Shuffle. You can expect to shell out between Php 3390 to Php 4990 for the bigger speaker docks. The smaller bird speakers will retail for 1390 each, and can be chained together for better sound.
