Alcatel releases Blaze Glory 918N, dual-sim Android 2.3 smartphone for only Php 5,999

Android devices are just getting cheaper and cheaper, as Alcatel has just launched their Blaze Glory 918N Android 2.3 device at an event earlier today. Alcatel is positioning the Blaze Glory 918N as an entry level smartphone which is apparent from its affordable Php 5,999 price tag. For that money you get a 615MHz processor, a 3.2-inch screen, dual-sim capability and Android 2.3 on-board.

It’s obvious from the pricing of the device that it’s aimed to go after the same market that Samsung’s Galaxy Y swims in, though there isn’t a clear winner between the two specs-wise – the Blaze Glory 918N has a better looking screen and has dual-sim capabilities, but only has a clockspeed of 615MHz, while the Galaxy Y has a faster processor 830 MHz ARMv6 at the cost of a smaller screen (3-inches, 240 x 320 pixels).

RIM outs 5 BlackBerry devices for the Philippines: Bold 9790, Curve 9380, Torch 9810, Torch 9860 and Bold 9900 (white)

We’re fresh from RIM’s new BlackBerry unveil earlier today, and the company is dead set on starting the new year right with 5 new product offerings. The 5 new products all run BlackBerry’s new BlackBerry 7 operating system and encompass a large swath of market segments, from entry level to the premium, hi-end market.

    BlackBerry Bold 9790

The BlackBerry Bold 9790 is a compact device aimed at users who don’t want their gadgets weighing them down. It’s equipped with a 2.45-inch touch display (480 x 360 pixels), QWERTY keyboard and is powered by a 1GHz processor. This particular device is more compact than a typical BlackBerry device without sacrificing performance and usability. The BlackBerry Bold 9790 will retail for Php 22,890.

    BlackBerry Curve 9380

The BlackBerry Curve 9380 is the company’s first touchscreen device in the Curve family. It was officially announced a few months ago back in Jakarta, Indonesia (along with the 9790 above), and it seems that the device has finally made it onto our shores. As a recap, the Curve 9380 is equipped with a 3.2-inch touchscreen display, 5 megapixel camera and a 806 MHz CPU. The BlackBerry Curve 9380 will retail for Php 16,990.

    BlackBerry Torch 9810

The Torch 9810 is a re-issue of sorts of the Torch 9800. Building on the iconic look and feel of the previous device, RIM has managed to make the Torch 9810 better by stuffing a better display  (3.2-inch 16M-color TFT touchscreen, 480 x 640 pixels) and processor (single-core 1.2GHz processor) in it while retaining the form factor of the device. The BlackBerry Torch 9810 will retail for Php 28,590.

    All-Touch BlackBerry Torch 9860

We actually detailed the launch and reviewed the BlackBerry Torch 9860 a few months ago and it seems that RIM has only gotten around to releasing it now. Nevertheless, it’s here, and will be made available to the general public with a suggested retail price of Php 24,690.

BlackBerry Bold 9900 in Pure White

The Bold 9900 was officially announced a few months ago, along with the BlackBerry Torch 9860. RIM has now made the white version of the Bold 9900 available to the general public, carrying a Php 31,690 price tag.

All five devices will be available to buy once January 13 rolls around.

It’s been a good start of the year for the world of photography, with multiple cameras being unveiled to the public. Not wanting to be left out of the fray, Fujifilm has a revelation of their own, in the form of the X-Pro1.

Lenovo unveils IdeaPad YOGA – the ultrabook that doubles as a tablet

A bit of variety today for Lenovo – the company has just announced their IdeaPad YOGA, which the company says is the first multi-mode notebook with a 360 degree flip-and-fold design. Apparently, you can use the YOGA as a regular notebook, and thanks to its 13.3-inch (1600 x 900 resolution) touchscreen display and double hinged design, you can flip it around and use it as a Windows 8 tablet. Ingenious. The whole device has an overall thickness of just 16.9mm, and weighs about a kilo and a half. Unfortunately, there’s no clear word on what kind of processor this thing will use, aside from the usual Intel Processor family verbiage that you see on CES devices. But since it’s set to launch with Windows 8, there’s a big chance that this particular device will be running Intel’s next generation of processors, codenamed Ivy Bridge.

Asus new Eee Pad MeMO 171 takes a swipe at the 7-inch form factor

Possibly buoyed by its success in the 10-inch tablet segment, Asus is jumping in the 7-inch tablet market with their Eee Pad MeMO 171 . Aside from an ungainly name, the new 7-inch tablet from Asus features a  7-inch 1280 x 800 IPS display, 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm processor with about 1GB RAM and will come in two storage flavors: 16GB and 32GB. The device will come out of the gate with Android 4. The device also comes with a Bluetooth MeMIC headset that lets users search for contacts, send and receive text messages, and place calls. Plug in some earphones and it serves as an audio device that streams music from the MeMO via a Bluetooth connection. Oddly enough, the device comes with a stylus – even though it sports a capacitive screen – which is stored at the bottom of the device.

EDIT: Sorry for the confusion, we have edited the article with updated specs and model name. Thanks Chuchi!

LG’s new smart ref helps you lose weight and keeps track of what you eat

Seems like appliances nowadays have a mind of their own. Case in point – LGs new Smart  French-door Refrigerator. The refrigerator is packed to the brim with modern amenities which include LG’s Snart ThinQ technologies, key among them is the Smart Manager which transforms the ref into sort of a food management system.
Users will be able to input various groceries as they place them inside the ref, which then allows users to keep track of location and expiration date via the Smart Manager’s Freshness Tracker. When connected to LG’s Smart Oven, users will also be able to use the unique Health Manager features which recommends recipes and menus based on personal profiles that take into account factors such as an individual’s age, gender, weight, height and Body Mass Index (BMI). The information is used to determine options that may be more suitable to the person’s physical condition and might be particularly useful for consumers with medical conditions that require special diets, such as diabetes, high blood pressure or food allergies, and for those on a weight-loss program.
Should consumers wish to cook a recommended dish, they can select the dish and press “Send to Oven,” which sends the necessary information to a LG Smart Oven and automatically arranges the proper oven settings. Users can also use their smartphones to monitor the refrigerator from wherever they are. No word on local availability and pricing as of this time.

LG announces larger screen sizes for TVs, voice recognition remote control and gesture control

We’re currently in the middle of LG’s CES press conference, and as it turns out, there are a lot of things going on with LG. For one, the Korean company is going all out with larger screen sizes for its TV – from 55-inches all the way to 84 inches.

LG’s also looking to improving their Smart Remote – aside from being able to detect motion, the new and improved LG smart remote will also now be able to do voice recognition. LG will also be outing a 3D gesture interface solution that’ll allow users to control their TVs via gestures – think Kinect.

Sharing  content to other devices will also be simpler thanks to their own Smart Share Plus sharing solution. LG has also said that it’ll have the first TV with Intel’s WiDi solution built-in – so far the solution has only been available as a separate module that you’d have to buy for your TV.

Possibly the most interesting announcement during the press conference was LG’s announcement of their own chipset – the L9. Details are scarce so far, but as far as we know LG has said that the L9 will be based on a Dual-core ARM architecture and a quad-core GPU.

Canon unveils Powershot G1 X, massive 14.3 megapixel sensor and up to 12,800 ISO

More news from CES today, and this time from Canon. The company has released their flagship Powershot camera named the G1 X, and boy is this thing impressive. The new camera sports a huge 14.3 megapixel CMOS sensor (that already approaches the size of mirrorless and entry level DSLRs)  alongside an insanely high 12,800 ISO. The 4x 28mm lens has an aperture range of f/2.8-16 which makes the G1 X able to handle nearly every shooting condition that amateurs would ever encounter. The camera is also able to shoot in the RAW format and like Canon’s other digital cameras, can shoot 1080p video and is able to take a variety of accessories like Speedlite, Macro Twin Lite or the Macro Ring Light flashes. The G1 X also comes with a 3.0-inch vari-angle LCD with 922,000 dots of resolution allowing users to view their shots in excellent clarity. The Powershot G1 X is reportedly shipping with a $799.99 price tag and will start dropping in US stores in February. No word on local availability or pricing so far.

LG’s Cinema Screen cuts screen bezels down to 1mm, more screen with same space

Screen bezels are an integral part of any display, and while screens are getting prettier and prettier each year, bezel sizes typically remained the same. Until now that is – LG has managed to cut down the size of their bezels on their new CINEMA 3D Smart TVs to an astonishing 1mm, giving you more screen real-estate without increasing the overall dimension of the panel. The new technology comes with the company’s new CINEMA 3D glasses which they promise to be 20 percent lighter than the previous models with 3 models to choose from.

LG also says that their new screens will allow users to experience Dual Play, a 3D solution that allows two players to see entirely different images on screen, which infinitely better than playing with your friends via split-screen. Though LG isn’t the first one to actually implement this technology (that award goes to Sony’s Playstation 3D TV), they have the capacity to actually spread this particular feature around throughout their entire line-up of 3D TVs.

Lenovo unveils IdeaPad S2, looks suspiciously like a Transformer

Hot off the CES floor is Lenovo’s IdeaPad S2, the Chinese firm’s latest entry into the tablet category. The IdeaPad S2 runs on a dual-core, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8960 processor, is about a third of an inch thick (that’s 8.5mm), weighs in at about 1.1 pounds (half a kilo) and comes with an optional keyboard dock, no doubt inspired by the success of Asus’ own Transformer tablets.

The 10-inch tablet will be able to run for about 20 hours with the dock attached, and Lenovo says that the device will be able to support ICS. While the device pales in comparison specs wise with other, faster quad-core equipped tablets popping up this year, Lenovo might just be able to make this device more appealing by aggressively pricing it. Unfortunately like so many other CES product unveils this year, no release date or price has been set for the device.

Acer unveils world’s thinnest ultrabook – Aspire S5

Sorry Asus, but Acer just stepped up their game and snatched the crown of the world’s thinnest from the UX21’s shiny, aluminium hands – at least according to Acer anyway. The new Aspire S5 is only about 15mm thick at its thickest point, and weighs less than 1.35 kilos. The Aspire S5 sports a 13.3-inch LCD screen and unlike their previous ultrabook, the S3, uses a SSD right off the bat allowing it to post speedy boot times. Speaking of speedy boot times, the  S5 is able to post a blazingly fast 1.5 second wake up time via Acer’s Instant On technology. The S5 also uses Acer’s own cloud solution called Acer Always Connect, which allows users to access the information stored in the S5 via their smartphone and other devices. The S5 will be powered by an Intel processor, though which one is still anybody’s guess, though the inclusion of a Thunderbolt port is a strong indication that this will be an Ivy Bridge device. No word on price and availability as of the moment.

HP releases redesigned 15-inch Envy to the Philippines, priced

HP’s just refreshed their 15-inch Envy notebook, and wouldn’t you know it, it still looks gorgeous. The notebook isn’t an ultrabook by any stretch of the imagination, but don’t think for a second it’s your regular, run-of-the-mill notebook. The new Envy is 15-inches of pure, unadulterated sexy, with a majority of the externals built of sturdy aluminium. Internally, the Envy 15 houses a second generation Intel Core processor (depending on configuration), with an AMD’s Mobility Radeon HD graphic processors giving that extra oomph when it comes to gaming. The Envy 15 is also a multimedia powerhouse, as it contains six powerful speakers and two subwoofers with Beats Audio. Of course, something this pretty and powerful isn’t cheap – you’ll need to fork over Php 99,990 if you ever decide you want one.

Sony bows out of OLED TV business

Aside from the obvious product releases come the start of CES on Monday like ultrabooks and tablets, many are looking forward to OLED TV announcements from the usual suspects. Unfortunately, that doesn’t include Japanese electronics giant Sony, as it seems that they have decided to bow out of the OLED TV business, at least for consumers. The firm has stated that they’ll be sticking with the tried and proven LCD panels with their TVs. This announcement is a disappointment to many, as Sony was the first company to ever make a commercial OLED TV roughly 5 years ago – the XEL-1.
