Globe connects more people in Luzon provinces

Globe Telecom has successfully completed network link-up with Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company (PLDT) covering three major provinces in Luzon before the year ends.

Residents and business establishments in La Union, Nueva Ecija, and Benguet can now enjoy more affordable and efficient telecommunication services from the two major operators with the activation of local interconnection in the three provinces. Local interconnection paves the way for subscribers in a specific province or city to make calls via 7-digit local dialing without paying long distance charges. Without interconnection, a Globe landline subscriber would have to pay long distance rates to call a PLDT landline subscriber within the same area, and vice-versa.

An interconnected network will greatly impact the delivery of fast and cost-efficient telecommunication services that will further boost economic growth of the three provinces. Nueva Ecija, for instance, is considered the main rice growing province of the Philippines and is one of the top producers of agricultural products in the country. La Union and Benguet host a variety of industries that significantly contribute to its growing economies: service, agriculture, manufacturing, mining, and tourism.

“The successful activation of local interconnection in La Union, Benguet and Nueva Ecija is indeed one good reason to celebrate the Yuletide season, especially as it benefits more subscribers in the country who deserve and quality affordable telecom services,” said Atty. Froilan M. Castelo, Head for Corporate and Legal Services Group of Globe. “This is definitely a huge milestone for the three provinces as part of our compliance to the request of NTC to boost the country’s telecommunications infrastructure, with Globe always committed to serve and protect public interest and consumer welfare.”

Samsung has stated that Galaxy S II and Galaxy Note owners will get their upgrades in the first quarter of next year, with other Galaxy devices following soon after. The official word is that only the Galaxy S II, Galaxy S II LTE, Galaxy Note, Galaxy R, Galaxy Tab 10.1, Galaxy Tab 8.9, Galaxy Tab 7.7, and Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus will be getting the upgrade, which means the lower spec Galaxy Y and Galaxy W will be both out of luck. Get where you need to go with new Google Map Maker

    0

With 2012 approaching, we’re getting a head start on our New Year’s resolution to shed some excess weight and improve our overall appearance. You may have seen our ongoing efforts to improve the look, feel, and user experience across many other Google products to date. And with Google Map Maker available in the Philippines, United States, Canada, and more than 180 other regions, it’s time for another makeover. Today, we’re revealing a new version of Google Map Maker to help users map the places they know best and make their hometowns sparkle on Google Maps.

With Map Maker, you can easily help ensure that the changing world around you is accurately reflected on the map. Add your favorite gift shop, the nearest tree farm, or even the golf course where you once got that hole in one. It’s also easier to mark the best route to Grandma’s house and draw better buildings with courtyards and crisper corners. The options are endless when it comes to mapping the places you know and love. Once approved, your contributions will appear on Google Maps, Google Earth and Google Maps for mobile for all the world to see (video).

Since the October 2008 launch in the Philippines of Google’s Map Maker, Filipinos have been responsible for greatly improving the quality of their local maps. Volunteers across the country have mapped their neighborhoods, correcting and moderating each others’ changes to create the most accurate maps possible.

These maps have made a positive social impact. In 2009, Google Maps played a large role in the Crisis Response Page after Typhoon Ondoy submerged major roads in Metro Manila and displaced hundreds of thousands of people. Filipino volunteers added crucial updates to the map, including information about missing people, road conditions, developing news, and locations on where to donate relief supplies. During the Philippine Elections in 2010, Google engineers developed a map for Filipinos to help them find a voting center in their precinct and enable Filipinos to help others by identifying the voting areas in Google Maps at http://www.findyourprecinct.ph/.

Why not make your New Year’s resolution to improve the map for millions of people? Start here.

HDD manufacturers decreasing HD warranty periods

Seems like the days of extended HDD warranties are over. According to a report over at PC World, both Seagate and Western Digital are cutting the warranty periods of their hard disk drives. Seagate is slated to slash warranties of some of its products come Dec. 31, with Western Digital following suit on Jan. 2. All HDD shipped before this date will still enjoy the current warranty terms that they carry as of the moment.

Seagate has responded to the change of policy by saying that it was standardizing its terms to be more consistent with those commonly applied throughout the consumer electronics and technology industries. “By aligning to current industry standards, Seagate can continue to focus its investments on technology innovation and unique product features that drive value for our customers,” the company said.

Seagate will be cutting the warranties of internal drives for notebooks and desktops. Warranties for external hard drives and drives for commercial applications remain unchanged.

Western Digital meanwhile will be reducing the warranties on its Caviar Blue, Caviar Green and Scorpio Blue drives from their usual three years to two. A WD rep told PC World that the changes are not a reaction to the recent flooding of their plants in Thailand. “Standard PC warranties are one year. Even so, WD will continue to maintain five-year warranties on its premium desktop/notebook products, including the WD Caviar Black, WD Scorpio Black and WD VelociRaptor products.”
