Filipinos are known to be one of the most active internet users the world over. Among the activities that dominate Filipinos’ days include social networking, video streaming, web surfing, and online shopping; all of which are blinking signs businesses should pay attention to. This booming digital sector possess potential ripe for the picking. Globe myBusiness sees this potential, which is why they partnered up with AdSpark to introduce DigPH, the country’s largest digital and mobile marketing summit for small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

Now on its second year, DigPH is a channel through which SME’s are equipped with the right business tools to succeed in the cutthroat market through innovative topics and learning sessions. This year, Globe myBusiness and AdSpark prepared a more extensive lineup of speakers and forums where entrepreneurs can learn, discover, and leverage the latest trends in digital solutions to expand their online footprint.

In the Philippines, there are close to one million SME’s , but the needs of this sector are still not recognized. Similar to a fish out of water, business owners are still quite clueless as to how digital marketing works.  DigPH aims to help SMEs start their businesses on the right track by creating a roadmap with the most effective solutions. Functioning as “business advisers” to SMEs, businesses can minimize their costs and subsequently grow through learning various proven-effective programs.

During the summit, entrepreneurs also learned how to make their presence known online through top e-commerce platform, Shopify. It is difficult for businesses to succeed through SNS sites alone, Shopify presents itself as a platform where users can effectively showcase their product, gain an audience, and interact with a community they share the same passion with. This go-to solution for business neophytes allows them to have their own customizable website, regardless of their product and location. ePLDT bolsters enterprise cloud adoption through cloud professional services

    pldt

In the era of cloud computing, where most IT practitioners have become familiar with the meaning of cloud and the benefits of scalability, flexibility, and potential cost savings it brings, there are enterprises that are still hesitant to make the move.  A common objection is the lack of industry-level skills needed to manage the cloud. Enterprises encounter possible staffing and training hurdles since newly hired IT personnel may initially lack cloud experience or may go through a learning curve before becoming a cloud expert. This is apart from the tedious migration and management tasks that take up much of the IT department’s time instead of allowing them to focus on strategic areas of the business.

In line with its commitment in enabling enterprises to maximize the potential of cloud technology, ePLDT has expanded its portfolio of solutions to include Cloud Professional Services.

The new service line from ePLDT, the digital enterprise enabler of the country’s leading telecoms and digital services provider PLDT, Inc., provides enterprise customers access to expert consulting and support for their cloud environments. It is also introduced on top of the PLDT Cloud Infrastructure-as-a-Service offering, allowing customers to get the expertise when and where they need it.

ePLDT’s Cloud Professional Services  focuses on three main areas: Expert Cloud Consulting, with ePLDT handling the creation of a cloud strategy roadmap and evaluating systems for migration so top-tier customers can optimize the cloud’s benefits; Expert Cloud Deployment and Migration, which lets customers outsource the transition of select enterprise applications and services to the cloud for improved efficiency and scalability; and Expert Cloud Systems Operations (SysOps), which includes managing and monitoring customers’ daily cloud functions such as capacity, network, backup and storage, maintenance and troubleshooting.

The introduction of these services aims to further boost cloud adoption in the Philippines.

“While more enterprises are interested to move their systems to the cloud, they are worried by the complexity of deployment and by the intricacies involved in converting from a traditional IT setup to a cloud system.  Moreover, the skills required to operate and manage these systems are not widely-available in the market,” said Nico Alcoseba, Head of PLDT Disruptive Business Group.  “ePLDT’s Cloud Professional Services aims to fill that skills gap by providing customers the strategic guidance and operational expertise they need to maximize the potential of their cloud systems and reap its benefits. Whether they are new to the cloud or simply migrating additional applications to the cloud environment, customers can take advantage of ePLDT’s expertise and make their transitions with ease.”

To ensure that it provides superior cloud expertise, ePLDT has also accelerated its capability enhancement and certification of its technology support team, employing established frameworks and best practices developed and customized specifically for cloud consulting. The Expert Cloud Migration and SysOps, in particular, are implemented by the same ePLDT cloud engineers who manage the overall PLDT Cloud infrastructure with a combined experience of more than 30 years in cloud management and systems administration, across the Cloud Operations team. These professionals have garnered certifications from VMWare, Linux, RedHat, and Windows, among others.

“This is another important step towards our vision to become a premier managed cloud provider,” shared Nerisse Ramos, ePLDT Group Chief Operating Officer. “We go beyond providing the tools for enterprise customers to move to the cloud — we want to be part of their cloud journey and ensure that they take the right steps toward building a cloud system that will transform their business.”

Symantec detects malicious Google Play Store app

Though masquerading as a normal-looking card game score keeper, the Beaver Gang Counter app on the Google Play Store has been stealing Viber photos and videos said a reverse engineering report by Symantec.

Symantec discovered that the app contained malicious code that enables it to search for directories containing Viber media which it then sends to a remote web server. The data stolen by the malware could be used for various purposes such as identity theft, blackmail, fraud, and pornography, among others.

A closer look at Beaver Gang Counter also revealed an ingenious way to avoid detection—time-delayed attacks. It employs a command and control server which is queried to check if it’s time for the media to be collected. This allows threat actors to enable and disable the malicious behavior at will, bypassing the dynamic analysis of security vendors and even Google Play’s Bouncer app-vetting service. The workaround is being dubbed as Android.Vibleaker.

Google has been alerted and the app and its developer has been removed from the Play Store.

In order to protect consumers from smartphone threats, Symantec recommends the following: keep software up to date; refrain from downloading apps from questionable sites; pay close attention to app permissions; installing a suitable mobile security app; and making frequent backups of important data.

Strong smartphone, data traffic growth in Philippines: Ericsson Mobility Report

    er

Strong smartphone subscription and data growth are seen to be driving the telecommunications industry in the Philippines, based on the findings from the latest edition of the Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) Mobility Report.

Mobile subscription penetration is expected to reach close to 130 percent by 2021 after having climbed to 115 percent in 2015.  While LTE was around only 5 percent of all mobile subscriptions at the end of 2015, it’s expected to grow close to 70 percent in 2021.

“By 2021, insights from the Ericsson Mobility Report indicate that the smartphone subscriptions in the country will more than double from close to 40 million in 2015 to around 90 million in 2021,” Sean Gowran, President and Country Manager of Ericsson Philippines and Pacific Islands, shared.

Mobile broadband (MBB) subscription penetration for the country stood at almost 50 percent in 2015 but will reach more than 120 percent by 2021. “Aside from increasing affordability of smartphones and improvements in broadband coverage that our operators are working on, we think the youth segment of the market is one of the key drivers of mobile broadband growth, as they are more likely to be viewing online videos, using social networking and instant messaging apps on a daily basis,” Gowran said.

Globally, the Ericsson Mobility Report detailed a dramatic shift in teen viewing habits: use of cellular data for smartphone video grew 127 percent in just 15 months (2014-15). Over a period of four years (2011-15) there has been nearly 50 percent drop in the time teens spend watching TV/video on a TV screen, and in contrast an 85 percent increase in time spent watching TV/video on a smartphone. This, and the fact that the upcoming generation of mobile users are the heaviest consumers of data for smartphone video streaming (Wi-Fi and cellular combined), makes them the most important group for operators to monitor.

Compared to mobile broadband subscription penetration, the country’s fixed broadband subscription penetration, on the other hand, was just above 10 percent in 2015. “By 2021, however, we see this penetration rate going up to almost 20 percent,” Gowran said.

When comparing March 2016 and March 2015, average data traffic per user for mobile broadband in Philippines grew close to 30 percent, compared to around 60 percent for Wi-Fi. Gowran stated that “this is tremendous growth and we recommend that service providers consider how to include Wi-Fi as part of their overall strategy.”

Worldwide, the Ericsson Mobility Report reveals that the Internet of Things (IoT) is set to overtake mobile phones as the largest category of connected device by 2018.

Between 2015 and 2021, the number of IoT connected devices is expected to grow 23 percent annually, of which cellular IoT is forecast to have the highest growth rate. Of the 28 billion total devices that will be connected by 2021, close to 16 billion will be IoT devices.

Gowran revealed that: “IoT is now accelerating as device costs fall and innovative applications emerge. From 2020, commercial deployment of 5G networks will provide additional capabilities that are critical for IoT, such as network slicing and the capacity to connect exponentially more devices than is possible today.”

The Ericsson Mobility Report is one of the leading analyses of mobile data traffic available, providing in-depth measurements from live networks spread around the globe. The report uses these measurements and analysis, together with internal forecasts and other relevant studies, to provide insights into current traffic and market trends in the Networked Society.

The Traffic Exploration Tool, which accompanies the report, can be used to create customized graphs and tables. The information can be filtered by region, subscription, technology, traffic and device type.

The report defines a connected device as a physical object that has an IP stack enabling two-way communication over a network interface.

Kaspersky Lab reveals 10,000 Facebook phishing attacks

A Kaspersky Lab expert revealed that a malware attack on Facebook led around 10,000 users into infecting their devices after receiving a message from a “friend” who supposedly mentioned them on the social networking site. Contaminated devices were used to hijack accounts to further spread the infection and to enable other malicious activity. The attacks happened between June 24 and 27.

    Kaspersky Lab_FacebookChrome_2

Most of the attacks happened to users in South America, Europe, Tunisia, and Israel. Composed of two stages, the attack begins by downloading a trojan into the user’s computer, bringing with it troubling applications including a malicious Chrome browser extension. Once installed, these allowed for the takeover of the victim’s Facebook profile. A successful attack allows threat actors to change privacy settings, extract data, infect others, post spam, generate fraudulent likes and shares, and ultimately commit identity theft. Additionally, the extension blacklists known security websites as to protect itself from being detected.

People using Windows-based computers saw the highest risk, while those using Windows Mobile may have been targets at some point. Those on the Android and iOS platforms were immune since the malware used libraries incompatible with the mobile operating systems.

Luckily, Facebook has quickly responded to the threat and is blocking techniques used to spread malware from infected hosts. Google has also removed at least one of the malicious extensions from the Chrome Web Store.

“Two aspects of this attack stand out.  Firstly, the delivery of the malware was extremely efficient, reaching thousands of users in only 48 hours. Secondly, the response from consumers and the media was almost as fast. Their reaction raised awareness of the campaign and drove prompt action and investigation by the providers concerned,” said Ido Naor, Kaspersky Lab senior security researcher at the global research and analysis team.

Dot Property – Asia’s fastest-growing property portal is now in the Philippines

    0

    download

Since starting operations in the country, Dot Property Group’s Philippines website has witnessed phenomenal growth with the website – www.dotproperty.com.ph – allowing property owners and real estate agents to list their properties for sale and rent for free.

Established in 2013 in Singapore, Dot Property Group is Asia’s leading connected property portal group, operating property portal websites throughout Asia in Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore as well as in the Philippines, where millions of local and international property seekers are actively seeking their next home to buy or rent. The websites have been attracting increasing numbers of visitors – not only locally but from around the region and the world.

Dot Property Philippines, which began operating earlier this year, is the most recent addition to the growing Dot Property Group network. The Group sees huge potential in the Philippines, given the always-online lifestyle of the target market who find the Internet to be the most accessible tool when looking for the perfect property.

Alva Horgan, Managing Director for Emerging and Frontier Markets for Dot Property Group, noted that with a population of more than 100 million people and the 13th largest Internet audience worldwide, half of the population is under 25-years-old and, thus, is more likely to be tech-savvy. Internet use in the Philippines is more than 45 percent of the total population – that counts for almost half of the population.

The growing population of young professionals will be a source of future demand for residential properties. They will be searching online in greater numbers and www.dotproperty.com.ph is aiming to be their single source of information.

Horgan said: “There’s a great opportunity for Dot Property Group to further establish the Group as the preferred choice for consumers when it comes to buying or renting property, or looking for market intelligence.

“Since arriving, Dot Property Philippines has already signed some of the country’s leading property developers, real estate agents and other companies, and that number continues to grow on a daily basis.”

Early this year the Group also appointed Tanya Peralta-Yu as the Philippines Country Manager. She will oversee all aspects of Dot Property Group in the Philippines, including day-to-day operations and promoting the company’s rapid expansion within the online portal market, both among consumers and advertisers.

Horgan said that Yu’s appointment comes at a pivotal time for the Group, with the explosive growth of its business within the Philippines, regionally and globally.

Two of the major drivers for the growth of Dot Property Group are the useful resources it provides to enable property searchers to find their next home with ease, and the seller-friendly features, including free and easy uploading of property listings.

Real estate agents and developers can maximize their opportunities to showcase listings and generate real sales enquiries, while property seekers can search and filter a comprehensive selection of the available properties.

Dot Property Philippines’ listings includes houses, condominiums, villas, land, foreclosures and commercial spaces for sale and rent.

“We are seeing incredible growth in terms of traffic, and for advertisers seeking to connect to young property seekers, we provide them with the most convenient tool available online to find their next property,” said Yu.

“With the positive outlook for the real estate industry in the Philippines, we are well positioned to be the property portal of choice. The Philippines’ sustained economic performance will mean more jobs, resulting in more people with spending power, especially among the young working class,” she added.

“Whether they’re looking for a place to call their own or for investment, they have more resources to find the best location, compare the best deals or discover the latest updates in the real estate market. Dot Property Philippines’ is more than happy to provide all the assistance it can give,” Yu concluded.

Lenovo to develop next-gen data centers

Lenovo has launched an ambitious plan to develop powerful integrated solutions for the telco industry that will serve as the foundation for richer mobile content, 5G networks, and IoT workloads. Specifically, Lenovo will help clients in the sector deploy next-generation data centers using Open Source technologies as to provide agile, cost-effective, and flexible network architectures.

Dubbed Open Platform@Lenovo, the initiative was announced at the Red Hat Summit and will be powered by Red Hat’s software stack for network function virtualization as well as hardened, OCP-compliant infrastructure. NFV is an emerging telecommunications cloud architecture that leverages IT virtualization technologies adopted in mainstream data centers.

Lenovo has also joined the Open Platform for NFV project as a platinum member in a move designed to cement the company’s commitment towards open standard data center solutions. Along with their membership in the Open Compute Platform organization, Lenovo can further its drive of advancing system architectures which are highly customizable and secure.

“I’m delighted to welcome Lenovo as the newest Platinum member of OPNFV.  Joining the project is a true testament of Lenovo’s commitment to open standards and working collaboratively to develop a more robust NFV Infrastructure for the industry as a whole,” said OPNFV director Heather Kirksey.

Brian Connors, Lenovo vice president for next generation IT and business development, commented “Working within the framework of the OPNFV and OCP communities, Lenovo is aggressively investing in product enablement, system architecture, and research and development to create the best user experience.  Together with Red Hat, a leading enterprise OpenStack provider, we’re helping reduce complexity and cost, while enabling even greater flexibility and value.  Our engagement with the OPNFV project as a Platinum member will help accelerate development around NFV platforms for our shared service provider customers.”

IPC encouraging businesses to go digital

Local cloud computing company IP Converge Data Services, Inc. called on businesses to make the digital transition during the 2016 Philippine Cloud Summit held last June 29. Entitled “IoT: The Pinnacle of Digital”, the forum showcased the international shift towards the digital age spurred on by the Internet of Things.

“Digitization itself has changed. By definition, it used to refer to business tools that drive operational efficiencies. Today, it is more than that. Digital is a frame of mind that allows organizations to create and engage markets in a disruptive manner and redefine the economy,” said IPC president Reynaldo Huergas.

King-Yew Foong, research vice president and chief of research for communications service providers at Gartner, an information technology research and advisory company, made a bold forecast that in the next three decades, changes in the IT sphere will be so extreme that they’ll overshadow the development of the past three centuries. He emphasized that enterprises have to continuously innovate to sustain their growth, citing industries such as insurance and automotive as early adopters of IoT globally.

Foong added that some of the benefits enterprises should get in making the digital shift are the reduction of operating costs, capability to provide a unique customer experience, and finding new business models and income streams. However, adopting an IoT environment also has its own challenges, ranging from cybersecurity to project implementation. For proper IoT integration, Fong noted that stakeholders should have thorough understanding of the whole process and should choose the IoT partner that fits their enterprise requirements.

While IoT is still continuously developing, experts claim that it is here to stay. As digital is the new norm for enterprises and beyond, the cost of doing it is still a lot less than the cost of not doing it. Or as they say, pivot or perish.
