SAP gives competitive edge to UST students with its university alliances program

    Screenshot (93)

SAP announced the successful implementation of a new curriculum at the University of Santo Tomas-AMV (UST-AMV) College of Accountancy (UST-AMV) under its University Alliance Program. In collaboration with Accenture, SAP now equips the University’s Accountancy department with twelve hours of experiential laboratory activities that focus on the latest technologies in Accounting on top of Accenture’s industry-specific lectures under the Computer 4 or Accounting Information System (AIS) curriculum.

Initiated by Accenture—a leading global professional services company that provides solutions in strategy, consulting, digital, technology and operations—the AIS subject curriculum is composed of two hours lecture and three hours laboratory per week. The lecture includes the introduction for Accounting Information System, Internal Control, Revenue Cycle Parts 1 and 2, and Production Cycle. On the other hand, the laboratory sessions introduce the SAP technologies used in Order-to-Cash, Customer Relationship Management, Sourcing and Procurement, and Human Capital Management. This is currently being offered to the fourth year BS Accountancy and BS Management Accounting students of UST-AMV.

According to Clifford Ramos, a professor from UST-AMV who is part of the AIS implementation in the University, the education provided to the students of the University prior to the teaching of the new curriculum was based on the experience of the faculty as well as the training they get from SAP through its University Alliance Program. But with Accenture and SAP coming in as a team, Ramos emphasized that a new “industry flavor” was added to the mix.

“With the AIS, we are pouring in a different flavor to the whole curriculum. We are preparing students to mature intellectually by giving them an overview of what to expect in the business realm of the real world, particularly now that we are moving towards a tech-filled future,” Ramos said.

He added, “The first batch of students who were introduced to the AIS will be graduating this year. We noticed that with the new curriculum, we were able to encourage our students to prepare and make certain adjustments to be at par with industry standards. This is entirely more on the preparation side of the students. We hope that when they go out of the University, they will bring with them this edge over other graduates by leveraging what we taught here at UST-AMV.”

According to SAP Philippines Managing Director Ryan Poggi, SAP’s University Alliance Program will help enable universities in the Philippines to expand their opportunities to provide high-quality education to their students, through an industry-standard curriculum.

He said, “UST-AMV is one of the many universities that is able to integrate technology into its syllabus. We are happy to team up with Accenture to work on this strategic initiative and to collaborate to help build future talent and the next generation of leaders for the Philippines.”

Allan Caballero, Managing Director of Accenture in the Philippines and sponsor of the program, believes that the additional curriculum is a key step to enhancing collaboration with SAP Philippines and to help students further appreciate the existing curriculum as the extended curriculum will add to the value the current content delivers to students.

“I’m very proud of this collaboration with SAP Philippines. The program is about helping the next generation of students view technology as a means to help businesses be more efficient in their day-to-day operations,” he said.

Caballero added, “It is very important that the students are able to understand the full end –to- end picture by bringing the curriculum to life through real life examples on how the SAP solutions are used by clients today.”

Last November, Accenture celebrated the success of the program’s two-month pilot run at the Accenture Delivery Center, Robinsons Cybergate Tower 1, Mandaluyong City with selected students and faculty members from UST-AMV.

Toshitaka Yamashita, a fourth year accountancy student in UST, recounted his experience with the upgraded SAP curriculum. He said, “Lecturers from Accenture made me realize how effective accounting can be when merged with technology.”

Meanwhile, Joshua Sta. Ana, another accountancy student from the same school, added that learning about SAP’s technologies “opened a lot of doors” to the country’s accountancy students and this gave him a glimpse of his own future.

“I used to think that the only path available for accountancy graduates is becoming an auditor or a CPA,” Sta. Ana said. “I realized that we have so many other options after graduation.”

Due to the overwhelming interest and success of the pilot program, UST-AMV College of Accountancy requested for a second round of the SAP Curriculum Extension program with Accenture.

Poggi concluded, “Through this program, we are aiming to develop highly qualified graduates with critical skills that are needed in the 21st century. Working with Accenture, we can contribute towards preparing the next generation for the future of work, in this new digital economy.”

The University Alliances program opens up the world of SAP to almost 3,000 universities worldwide, and aims to develop highly qualified graduates with critical skills for the new Interconnected Digital Economy. Through the program, SAP promotes practical and future-oriented training at academic institutions by providing teaching staff and students all over the world with access to new SAP technologies. The program is designed for universities and vocational colleges that want to actively integrate SAP software into their curriculum.

New Sony Alpha camera ambassadors announced

Sony Philippines has chosen new names to represent their Alpha line of cameras. The individuals—namely toy photographer Sheng Gonzales; travel photographer Kimi Juan; lifestyle photographer Jelito de Leon; fashion photographer Charisma Lico; lifestyle and travel photographer Paco Guerrero; Pepe Diokno; and Mayad Studios—will be equipped with the brand’s latest cameras, including the A6300 and the A7 series.

De Leon noted on the A6300, “I get better and sharper images for sure. I don’t have to worry about cropping the photo because I will still have a high quality image.”

Juan also reflected De Leon’s sentiments, saying “It has definitely been easier to shoot with the A6300. When traveling, it’s hard to carry around a huge camera, but the A6300 is light and doesn’t compromise quality at all. The first time I took it on a trip, it really impressed me, because it was easy to use, and the colors did not disappoint either.”

Gonzales added, “I was completely blown away with the quality of the photos. It’s fast, crisp and sharp. Since I don’t rely much in post processing photos, Sony A6300 delivers an excellent quality and color without further enhancing it with editing software. I fell in love with it the first time I tried it. Its size and tilt screen feature is perfect for toy photography.”

Meanwhile, asked about his experience with the A7RII, Guerrero shared “Along with shooting photographs, I have also been moving into video, and having the Sony A7R II really lets me explore both mediums. One of the best things about the Sony system are the lenses, because amazing quality optics are the first piece of the puzzle when putting together a camera system.”

“We are humbled to be working with some of the country’s most talented photographers who have all made a name in their respective fields,” commented JV Ruanto, Sony Philippines product marketing officer for digital imaging. “We hope that they, through the workshops they will be conducting and the tips and tricks they will be sharing, will inspire more Filipinos to produce creative and one-of-a-kind work that they will be proud of.”

Quick Look: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060: Green Team’s trump card

Nvidia sees the success of the AMD RX 480 and raises them the GeForce GTX 1060, the Green Team’s newest sweet spot card. The card’s launch was quick relative to other x60 graphics cards from Nvidia’s stable, taking the stage just a month after the release of the high-end GTX 1080 and GTX 1070. Comparing this to its predecessors which took significantly longer to be revealed, we can see that the midrange mass consumer market is more alluring than ever.

What makes the GTX 1060 special? It’s dubbed as a GTX 980 killer. Yep, Nvidia’s saying that this card has what it takes to stand toe to toe against one of their previous flagships not only in terms of performance, but also in terms of price and power efficiency.

We can point the bold claim towards the all-new 16 nm Pascal chip which improves upon almost every aspect of its Maxwell predecessor. On board are 1280 CUDA cores clocked at a base of 1506 MHz, boosting to 1708 MHz when needed. It has 6 GB of GDDR5 memory buffer with speed of 8 Gbps and bandwidth of 192 GB/s, with the data travelling on a 192-bit-wide bus. The GTX 1060 also needs a 6-pin power connector to feed its teeny 120 W power requirement.

Do note though that the GTX 1060 does not support SLI meaning you can’t cheap your way towards beating the GTX 1080. Still, for what it costs—starting at around USD 250, much less than the 980’s introductory USD 400 tag—and what it’s promised to do, those except the most hardcore should find it enough for running their games at high visual quality.

    Quick Specs:

    • CUDA Cores: 1280
    • Core Speed: 1506 MHz (base); 1708 MHz (boost)
    • VRAM: 6 GB GDDR5
    • Memory Speed: 8 Gbps
    • Memory Bus: 192-bit
    • Memory Bandwidth: 192 GB/s
    • Power Requirement: 120 W; 6-pin PCIe power required; at least 400 W PSU
    • Output: DisplayPort 1.4; HDMI 2.0b; Dual Link DVI
    • Others: Multi-projection; VR Ready; Nvidia Ansel, G-Sync, and GameStream ready; DirectX 12 and Mantle API support
    • Dimensions: Dual slot, 111.2 x 249.5 mm

In an effort to draw in more online customers, eCommerce platform Lazada has cooked up a variety of new updates.

    image001

The first is that they will now be offering free shipping to addresses within Metro Manila with no minimum purchase required. However, do take note that orders 30 kgs and above will be charged with a corresponding bulky item shipping fee. This is good news for those who’ve always had to order an additional, miniscule item such as a folder or shampoo on top of what they actually want to buy just so they can meet the previous PHP 1,000 free shipping minimum.

The offer arrives just in time for their Super Brands Sale. Currently ongoing until July 11, customers can enjoy up to 80 percent discounts on selected items. Some of the more notable ones include: Samsung Home Theater System at PHP 4,699; Nescafe Dolce Gusto at PHP 2,999 with a free box of Cappuccino capsules; BCBGeneration shoes starting at PHP 1,980; SM Store items starting at PHP 498; Casio watches from PHP 845; Pampers Baby-dry Diapers from PHP 540; and Tresemme Keratin Smooth Hair Conditioner at PHP 252.

Lastly, the new Lazada app update has been rolled out to mobile customers. Featuring expanded menus and tabs, online shoppers can now find the item they want easier and faster. At a glance, customers can also get access to app-only deals, top brands, flash sales, new arrivals, and product recommendations.

The product detail page has also been reorganized to cater to every discerning shopper’s needs when viewing an item: product highlights, features, reviews and ratings in one go.
