ePLDT offers free vulnerability assessment to PH Businesses

    0

Furthering its aim of helping Philippine businesses implement reliable cybersecurity measures, ePLDT recently introduced the ePLDT Managed Security Solutions in its product roster.

ePLDT Managed Security Solutions is a suite of security services that cover the devices, systems, processes, and expertise needed to protect vital IT infrastructure from most security risks, evolving threats, and malicious software attacks.

“Many businesses find security overly complicated and thereby put it off to deal with later when a breach has occurred. Our goal is to simplify it for them, giving more incentives to make security a priority to minimize the cost of these breaches. Having protective measures is not enough— enterprises need to check for vulnerabilities and respond accordingly,” said Bernice Pineda, Business Development Manager for PLDT Disruptive Business Group.

Following the launch, ePLDT is offering free vulnerability assessment for a limited time, providing critical insight into specific details of a company’s IT system such as bandwidth usage, infected computers, and  possible security gaps within the network. A part of the free assessment will be the installation of a tool which can automatically analyze network traffic. This assessment is open for enterprises within Metro Manila and will be free for those who apply until August 31, 2016.

“The vulnerability assessment, which we are currently offering free of charge, will help enterprises understand cybersecurity in greater depth. We will help them test their current security and recommend the appropriate adjustments tailored for their needs,” said Francis Arjonillo, Head of PLDT Business Development for Enterprise Cloud and Managed Security. “In matters of security, being proactive is a must. One shouldn’t sit around and wait for a breach before taking action.”

Those who are interested in the free vulnerability assessment and the ePLDT Managed Security solutions may visit www.epldt.com/solutions/managed-security to sign up or view more details.

Suzuki helps rebuild Davao del Sur high school

Suzuki Philippines and Motorjoy Depot recently joined forces to help improve the facilities of Maria Cleta R. Delos Cientos National High School in Piape, Padada, Davao Del Sur.

Motorjoy Depot, Motortrade’s Mindanao arm, built two concrete buildings for the school: a 21.56 m2  faculty room for teachers and an 86.25 m2 three-classroom establishment for the students. Meanwhile, Suzuki, through its CSR wing Suzuki Philippines Foundation’s Suzuki Helps, Aids and Rebuilds (SHARE) program, helped furnish the classrooms with arm chairs, whiteboards, teacher’s tables and chairs, wall fans, computer sets, emergency lights, and bookshelves. They also provided them sets of sports equipment including basketball ring boards on the school’s open grounds.

The turnover ceremony for the donations was attended by the school’s benefactors from the private and public institutions, including Motorjoy Depot president Paulino Ongtenco and EVP Romeo Noro; Suzuki Philippines president Hiroshi Suzuki; Yamaha president Toru Osugi; Rotary Club of North Davao representative Bong Cristobal; Padada mayor Pedro Caminero, vice mayor Francisco Guerrero, Jr., and municipal councilors; School Board representative Carmelo De Los Sientos IV; and school head Dr. Elizabeth Solano.

Solano expressed her gratitude to the donors and wished them more blessings as they continue to give back to the community. In his speech, Suzuki thanked those who helped the endeavor and also urged the students to study hard to be part of the country’s development.

Suzuki also donated an AX4 motorcycle with a six-seater sidecar to the TODA of Piape in order to help the community with their transportation needs.

Latest Nexus 2016 rumored to be released soon

Another year, another vanilla Android smartphone from Google and one of its partner brands. If the most recent Nexus 6P was borne from a collaboration with Huawei, the upcoming Nexus 2016 will be made by the brand that started it all: HTC.

Specifically, HTC will be releasing two Nexus phones with the code names Sailfish and Marlin, or S1 and M1, respectively. The Nexus M1 will be the more powerful out of the two, arriving with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor, a minimum 4 GB of RAM, 12 MP rear and 8 MP front cameras, up to 128 GB of internal storage, 3450 mAh battery, and a USB-C port. It will also sport a 5.5 inch QHD AMOLED display, an all-aluminum body, and a back-mounted fingerprint scanner.

Meanwhile, the Nexus S1 is equipped with more modest but still powerful innards. It’s smaller body will boast a 5 inch 1080p AMOLED screen, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, 4 GB of RAM, a 2770 mAh battery, fingerprint scanner, and USB-C. To further drive costs down, its body will be mainly plastic with a metal border.

Both phones will arrive with the newest Android Nougat 7.0 operating system out of the box. Nougat is rumored to launch on August 5, and the Nexus smartphones should launch shortly after. With information still sparse, the specs above should still change pending official reveal.

    Review: Braven BRV-Pro—everything-proof speaker

Music just makes things better and, in the case of some activities, more tolerable. Chilling by the pool? Blast some tunes. Camping in the middle of the forest? Blast some tunes. Shredding down a mountain path aboard a bike? Blast some tunes. “But,” you ask, “aren’t those kinds of environments really dangerous for speakers?” You’re right, but what we have here isn’t just any speaker—it’s the everything-proof Braven BRV-Pro.

    Specifications:

    • Connections: Bluetooth, 3.5 mm stereo input, microUSB, USB
    • Audio: Built-in microphone and speakerphone
    • Profiles supported: HFP 1.6; A2DP 1.2; AVRCP 1.4; HSP 1.2; DI 1.3
    • Waterproof rating: IPX7, up to 1 m submersion
    • Battery: 2200 mAh Li-Ion, rated for up to 30 hours of playtime; power bank function
    • Size: 6.4 x 1.5 x 2.8 inches
    • Weight: 0.65 kg

    Design: 4/5

The Braven BRV-Pro’s design clearly conveys its ruggedness. Its innards are protected by an aluminum body that’s available in either silver with blue side latches or black with red side trims. Both feature a removable plastic piece emblazoned with the brand’s marque up top as well as the volume up/down, power, and play buttons; four rubber feet and water drain holes at the bottom; and more protective rubber on either side.

The rubber pads can also be found at the back sandwiching the I/O’s security cap. Lifting the latch reveals the battery indicator, connection reset button, microUSB charging port, full-sized USB port for charging other devices, and the 3.5 mm audio jack. The speaker grille occupies the entire front of the device.

Overall, the Braven BRV-Pro’s aesthetic result in an intimidating device that can double as a bludgeon. I’m not kidding—don’t drop it on your feet.

    Hardware: 3.5/5

Like I said above, the Braven BRV-Pro features an aluminum body that’s tough as nails and exhibits no creaking no matter how hard pressure is applied. However, I couldn’t find any technical details about its sound system, just that it’s reliably loud outdoors.

Interestingly enough, the BRV-Pro’s most eye-catching knickknack is its aftermarket accessories. Using a hex key on the four screws at the top will allow users to bolster the device with either a solar charging panel, rechargeable battery pack, sound-doubling stacking plates, glow deck, or an action camera mount. That’s a lot of flexibility for a speaker that promises not to give.

    User Experience: 4/5

If they ever made a tank that blasts audio instead of shells, it would be made out of the Braven BRV-Pro. This thing is ridiculously well-built that you can probably use it to hammer nails through plywood. Not that I did that—the review unit wasn’t mine after all—but I did give it a few good smacks against a wall and it still works. I even threw a couple of punches in and let’s just say BRV-Pro one, my knuckles zero.

Now let’s talk about sound quality. The BRV-Pro gets an “okay” in this aspect—not particularly bland but at the same time won’t blow you away. The drivers favor the mids a lot and the sound in the upper end of the spectrum is crisp. But while the bass is there, the speaker won’t give you as much thumping as pricier affairs. On the plus side, the BRV-Pro manages to retain enough audio texture at loud volumes without distorting sound.

Batter-wise, this thing can easily last through a whole day of constant playback. Keep in mind that the 30 hour rating is likely at the softest audio levels, so unless you’re going to treat it like a headphone and stick it up to your ear, the juice won’t live up to that promise. However, my experience with the BRV-Pro saw it easily lasting 12 hours with tons of battery left to spare. Additionally, the Braven BRV-Pro also boasts a power bank function that, combined with the optional solar charger, should pretty much keep this and its accompanying smart device topped up during daytime.

    Value: 4/5

The Braven BRV-Pro certainly is a hard pill to swallow with its PHP 6,750 price tag, though it’s actually affordable compared to other outdoor speakers. Don’t splurge on this one and expect a theater-like aural experience. Rather, expect a sturdy, long-lasting speaker that you can take with you anywhere that’s not under the sea. I’d personally get it for myself just to give my once-in-a-blue-moon outdoor adventures the musical score they deserve.

    What’s Hot:

    • Loud
    • Built like a tank

    What’s Not:

    • Sound quality doesn’t impress

    Bottomline:

    • Nature, meet your match.

    Final Score: 15.5/20

Review: Sapphire Radeon R9 Nano—proving size doesn’t matter

I’m very fond of mini-ITX builds. There’s just a certain allure to having a beastly gaming rig occupying a mere one square foot of desk space. However, small form factor gaming graphics cards are few and far between, and most of the time, high-end cards arrive with big, bulky bodies that wreck your enclosure’s airflow, cable management, and thermals. Enter the AMD Radeon R9 Nano: a six-inch card that packs quite a wallop. We review Sapphire’s take on it below.

    Specifications:

    • Stream Processors: 4096
    • Texture Units:  256
    • Compute Units: 64
    • ROPs: 64
    • Core Speed: 1000 MHz
    • VRAM: 4 GB HBM
    • Memory Speed: 1000 MHz
    • Memory Bus: 4096-bit
    • Memory Bandwidth: 512 GB/s
    • Power Requirement: 175 W; 8-pin PCIe power required
    • Output: 3x DisplayPort, 1x HDMI
    • Cooling: 90 mm single fan
    • Others: CrossFire, PowerTune, ZeroCore Power, FreeSync, Eyefinity, HD3D, Liquid VR, Virtual Super Resolution, TrueAudio, Universal Video Decoder, and DirectX 12 ready
    • Dimensions: Dual slot, 158 x 111 x 37 mm (L x W x D)

    Design: 4/5

The Sapphire Radeon R9 Nano’s design is very vanilla. Don’t get me wrong; the card looks really good even though it doesn’t have the “wow” factor of its competitors. Its simple aesthetics is characterized by the matte black shroud with the red Radeon typeface—the same as the ones found on the R9 Fury and Fury X. Its front is also occupied by the 90 mm fan with the Sapphire marque in the center.

The shroud wraps around the card’s top and bottom edges, with diagonal cutouts to facilitate heat dispersion. The top also houses the redundant BIOS switch (does not affect performance), while the bottom is home to the gold PCIe fingers. Moving to the back, you’ll be greeted by the bare black PCB and the heat sink mounting bracket.

You’ll see the horizontal cooling fins that cover the card’s entire length on the right edge, along with the 8-pin power connector. Lastly, the left side features the exhaust grille and the display outputs.

    Hardware: 4/5

At the Radeon R9 Nano’s heart is the Fiji GPU which, at the time of its unveiling, beat out the previous generation Hawaii architecture not only in raw power, but also in performance per watt. Featuring 4096 stream processors, 256 texture units, 64 compute units, and 64 ROPs, the card comes clocked at 1000 MHz and sips only 175 W from the wall. This Fiji-based card also struts 4 GB of High Bandwidth Memory with an effective speed of 1000 MHz. Data travels along a 4096-bit wide memory bus at a total rate of 512 GB/s.

Those specs are just shy of the liquid-cooled Fury X, with the X sporting a 50 MHz faster GPU speed, 0.41 TFLOPS faster performance, and 100 W more power consumption.  This means that the R9 Nano won’t have the same performance headroom as the Fury X, though it is very powerful out of the box.

    User Experience: 4.5/5

Nowadays, it’s rare to find a high-end card that disappoints and the Sapphire Radeon R9 Nano is no exception. Paired to my rig’s Intel Core i5-4460 and 8 GB of RAM, the R9 Nano easily managed its workload of Counter Strike: Global Offensive, Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor, NBA 2K16, and Ashes of Singularity all at 1080p and maximum visual settings. Yes, it can also play Overwatch. With its horsepower, there’s no doubt in my mind that it can also handle the same titles at 4K, albeit not so much at 60+ fps, but definitely above 30 fps.

As for temperature, it hovered around 80° C throughout the tests, which isn’t bad considering my Fractal Design Define Nano S isn’t decked out with tons of aftermarket fans. The ambient temperature of my room is also on the warmer side so if the card’s cooling solution weren’t as good as it is, it could have easily reached searing 90° C temps.

    Value: 3.5/5

Retailing for around PHP 33,000, the Sapphire Radeon R9 Nano performs slightly better than the Nvidia GTX 980 while being a bit more affordable and power efficient.  However, this doesn’t mean that it’s the most cost-effective card in the market right now. Squeezing high-end technology into a card only half a ruler in length isn’t cheap by any means, but it’s nice to see AMD trying to push the envelope that is mini-ITX.

    What’s Hot:

    • Mini-ITX graphics card done right
    • Decent temperature when under load

    What’s Not:

    • No LED lighting
    • Price-to-performance ratio is steep

    Bottomline:

    • It’s the proverbial small package that good things come in.

    Overall: 16/20

OLX PH Introduces New Campaign, “Win Together”

    0

OLX Philippines, the country’s leading classifieds platform with around 8 million monthly active users, has just introduced its thematic campaign for 2016, Win Together.

The campaign, in essence, is a culmination of the classifieds platform’s efforts throughout the years to bring customers the best buy and sell experience online. “Win Together” underscores the win-win exchanges within OLX’s online community. More than just being a service, it brings together people with similar interests and fosters relationships, which is key to the growth of its online community.

“OLX today is all about the connections and lifestyle created through the simple act of buying and selling,” explained Giancarlo Bonsel, general manager of OLX Philippines. “Through our platform, we connect people with one another to create value with each transaction and in time, foster relationships that enable a growing, supportive community that wins together.”

OLX chief marketing officer Cris Concepcion said, “We believe that buying and selling go beyond its practical function.  The exchanges between buyers and sellers create a community where everybody wins.  Within our larger community are smaller communities of like-minded individuals who share passions. It is in our best interest to help these ‘tribes’ grow their own community base as well as encourage entrepreneurship and healthy exchanges with more people. Collectively, community efforts contribute to a greater goal of promoting sustainability, thereby enabling all stakeholders to win together.”

In the Philippines, OLX receives over 40,000 new listings placed every day. “Win Together” is in line with OLX’s promise of efficiency, convenience, and safety. As its online community grows, the company continues to improve and search for ways to address the users’ needs and demands, being the main component that keeps the service going.

4Everybody wins: virtual cycle that feeds itself.

OLX is a platform where just about anyone can log on to to buy and sell goods and cars, find a job, or rent a house. It’s an avenue where communities are empowered, giving them the opportunity to turn their pre-owned goods into cash.

The campaign is also centrepiece of the brand’s latest multi-channel campaign. Beginning on Sunday, OLX Win Together TV ads will air through various local broadcast networks. The relatable television commercials presents individuals from different walks of life connect through an exchange which is driven by different personal reasons: a desire to exercise one’s interests, give back to a loved one, or even earn additional income. OLX reiterated that the people behind these transactions make every exchange successful and worthwhile.

OLX also plans to create engaging initiatives to facilitate the growth of its home-grown ‘tribes’. “We’re extremely excited for the programs we have planned for the rest of the year. These communities represent what OLX stands for, a platform fuelled by the desire of its users to preserve and extend their passion. It is through engaging these communities that we prove that there is alchemy in the buying and selling at OLX,” Concepcion added.
