Unlock your Samsung Galaxy Note II with this simple trick

If you’re one of those people who wished you could unlock your carrier-locked Galaxy Note II yourself to accept other SIM cards from other networks, listen up. Owl74 from the XDA forums has found a way to do that without any of that messy rooting or whatnot, and by just going through the menu of the device. While the original unlock trick was done on an LTE version of the Galaxy Note II, users from the forum has had success with other, non-LTE variants, as well as some Galaxy S III models. Interested? Here’s what you have to do:

Just dial the following keys *#197328640#

ain Menu > [1] UMTS > [1] Debug Screen > [8] Phone Control > [6] Network Lock > Options [3]Perso SHA256 OFF > (after choosing this option, wait about 30 seconds, then go back one step by pressing the Menu button then select Back, now you are in [6] Network Lock then choose [4] NW Lock NV Data INITIALLIZ

Wait for about a minute and reboot your phone. That should be it. Insert another SIM from another carrier to test if it worked.

It goes without saying that if you do decide to fiddle with the settings on your device, you do it on your own risk. But this simple step is pretty easy to do, and anyone with a functioning pulse should be able to do it for their device.

Glowing plastic material can create light bulbs of any shape

Wake Forest researchers have developed a lighting material that could rival the current king of lighting, LEDs. Using nanotechnology, the researchers created a plastic material that glows when an electric current runs through it. This material, unlike LEDs and their more polluting predecessors, compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) is also unique in that it doesn’t have to necessarily be one shape—since it’s plastic, it can be made into any shape.

“People often complain that fluorescent lights bother their eyes and the hum from the fluorescent tubes irritates anyone sitting at a desk underneath them,” said David Carroll, the light’s lead researcher. “The new lights we have created can cure both of those problems and more.” Another issue with LED lights is they tend to have a bluish tint, while fluorescent tubes are yellow. This plastic material has a color closer to sunlight, but can be made to emit any color. “If you wanted blue lights, discos would still be popular. You want lights that have a spectral content that is appealing to us inside of a building,” Carroll also said. “You want a light that won’t shatter and create a hazmat situation while your children are around.”

The technology builds off of a decade of research in field-induced polymer electroluminescence. The Wake Forest researchers added multi-walled carbon nanotubes to three layers of moldable white-emitting polymer, which led to a five-fold increase in the light emitted by the device compared to the polymer without the nanotubes.

Some applications for this material include light displays, marquee lighting, bus and subway signs. Wake Forest has already partnered with a company that could possibly bring something that uses this material to the market by next year. If successful, it could greatly reduce power consumption, helping consumers and businesses save money.

Smart unveils two LTE handsets: Sony Xperia V and ZTE T82

While Globe was mum about the LTE smartphones they’ll be unveiling this weekend, Smart was more than happy to spill the beans on their upcoming LTE handsets. The telco will be offering two LTE enabled handsets for their LTE service: the Sony Xperia V and the ZTE T82.

The Sony Xperia V is a device that’s been knocking around in these parts ever since it was unveiled during IFA, and is a product that we’ve been hankering to get our hands on for some time. Who would blame us? It sports a 4.3-inch, 1280 x 720 resolution display, is shatter and water-resistant and has a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 1.5GHz dual core processor with Android 4.0 on board.

If the Xperia V isn’t to your liking, you can always grab the ZTE T82. This particular LTE device has a 4.3-inch display,  1.5 GHz dual-core processor and sports an 8-megapixel camera.

“As two of the most advanced handsets today, the Sony Xperia V and the ZTE T82 add even more excitement to a lineup of power handsets exclusively available to Smart subscribers,” said Mellissa Limcaoco, head of Marketing for Smart brands.

“To fully enjoy the features of these two devices, as with other smartphones, subscribers must use them with a strong and reliable network. And Smart is the only telco in the country with a world-class data network capable of providing the best connectivity to the world’s most advanced devices,” Limcaoco added.

Smart is offering both of these handsets free (the Sony Xperia V will only be free until January 15, 2013) with their LTE Plan 1500,  bundled with unlimited data (until January 2013) 120 SMS and 60 call minutes.

Globe will start selling LTE mobile phone(s) this weekend, still coy on what those units will be

    0

Aside from unveiling Globe’s new smartphone apps today, Peter Bithos, Head of Consumer Division at Globe Telecom had a surprise announcement for the press gathered at their event. The Globe exec said that the telco will start selling LTE-enabled smartphone(s) this weekend, which should entice people who are ready to jump on in on the LTE bandwagon wave but don’t want to settle for just the LTE dongle that Globe initially offered when they launched the service. Unfortunately, Mr. Bithos did not reveal what LTE devices would be launched this weekend, though he was holding an LTE version of the Galaxy S III when he did the demo for the Globe apps earlier tonight. He was also pretty mum when we asked him if they would also unveil the LTE version of the iPhone 5 when it hits stores next week. Here’s to hoping, right?

Globe launches 4 new apps: GCash, GServices, GMovies and GMessage, makes SMS messages cheaper when sent through apps

We just wrapped up Globe’s unveil of four of their newest smartphone apps for their customers. The four new apps – GCash, Gservices, GMovies and GMessage represent Globe’s renewed commitment to enriching the smartphone experience of their subscribers. All four apps will show up in both the Google Play store and the iOS App store.

The new GCash app allows users to buy load directly from the app which gives them a rebate of 10%. The app also allows users to pay for other stuff using GCash. For example, if you walked up to Starbucks and asked to pay for your drink using GCash, the app will generate a QR code that the store will then scan. Upon scanning the QR code, your GCash account will automatically be debited. No word yet on what stores will accept the QR code as of writing.

GServices does exactly what it says on the tin – it allows you to access Globe’s numerous services and promos straight from the app. Yes, that means that you will no longer have to remember keywords and the numbers that you can send them to – you can do all of that through the app itself. The app also gives you all the information that you need to remmember when you’re calling Globe’s customer support line, which includes your account details. You can also see your bill straight from the app if you want to.

GMovies makes buying movie tickets simpler and easier. The app allows you to buy tickets to whatever movie that’s showing. The app does all of this without leaving a paper trail, which isn’t the case with some of offerings out in the market. Once you pick a movie, you can then pick the seat that you want and then pay with it using your Credit Card and Ayala’s MPass service. From there, the app will then send you a bar code that you can then present when you get to the theater door – no more lining up at the ticket booth. The service will be available for Ayala Cinemas in connection with Sureseats.com, no word yet when this will hit SM Cinemas.

GMessage is probably the most disruptive of all the services that Globe unveiled. It’s basically a messaging app that allows you to message other GMessage users for free. What’s special about this app is that it allows you send messages to people who don’t have the app, and Globe charges you a minimal fee when you do – the charge is Php 0.15, which is significantly cheaper than the regular Php 1.00 texting fee. We’ll let that sink in for a bit. The implication here is that it’s now cheaper to send a text using the app than using plain ol’ SMS. The only downside is that you will have to have an active data connection to use it, but in today’s world that’s not really a stretch.

The apps are available to download in both the Google Play Market and the iOS app store.

New 25 GPU monster devours passwords in seconds

Whenever you sign up for a place that requires a username and a password, you’re often told to put a capital letter, at least one symbol (usually a number) and make it at least six characters in length. Passwords are also put on private networks to prevent unauthorized access. Some of the most common passwords that we use (mostly out of convenience rather than account or network security) include birthdays, names of loved ones, and even simple ones such as “xyz123” and even the word “password” itself. The capital letters, symbols, and character length ensure additional security, but is that really enough to thwart a cyber attack?

Two of the most common ways hackers can obtain your password include sending you deceptive emails with links in them that contain keyloggers (phishing) or brute forcing passwords using programs that use every possible character combination for a number of characters. The brute force method can take quite a bit of computing power due to the extreme loads that the computer is under while it is guessing passwords.

Researcher Jeremi “epixoip” Gosney demonstrated a rig at the Passwords^12 conference in Oslo, Norway that leveraged the Open Computing Language (OpenCL) framework and Virtual OpenCL to run the HashCat password cracking program across a cluster of five 4U servers equipped with 25 AMD Radeon GPUs and communicating at 10 Gbps over Infiniband switched fabric, making even the strongest passwords fall and placing the blame on weak encryption algorithms, such as LAN Manager (LM) and NTLM, which provides a challenge-response authentication mechanism, in which clients are able to prove their identities without sending a password to the server.

The researcher’s system was able to churn through 348 billion NTLM password hashes per second. That renders even the most secure password vulnerable to compute-intensive brute force and word list (or dictionary) attacks. The word list (or dictionary) method is another form of password cracking where the program checks passwords against a lengthy word list to find a match. “A 14 character Windows XP password hashed using LM, for example, would fall in just six minutes,” said Per Thorsheim, organizer of the Passwords^12 Conference. “Passwords on Windows XP? Not good enough anymore,” Thorsheim added.

LM Is what is used on Win XP, and LM converts all lowercase chars to uppercase, is at most 14 chars long, and splits the password into two 7 char strings before hashing—so we only have to crack 69^7 combinations at most for LM. At 20 Gbps we can get through that in about 6 minutes. With 348 billion NTLM [password hashes] per second, this means we could rip through any 8 character password (95^8 combinations) in 5.5 hours,” said Gosney.

“Tools like Gosney’s GPU cluster aren’t suited for an ‘online’ attack scenario against a live system. Rather, they’re used in ‘offline’ attacks against collections of leaked or stolen passwords that were stored in encrypted form,” Thorsheim said. “In that situation, attackers aren’t limited to a set number of password attempts—hardware and software limitations are all that matter.”

In light of this information, everyone should take the necessary precautions to ensure the security of your network or any accounts you use—change your passwords often, and make them hard for anyone but you to guess. Some network security experts even advise that you write your passwords down on a piece of paper—hackers still can’t hack into those.

Twitter can no longer display Instagram pictures properly in tweets

If you’ve suddenly discovered that you can no longer view Instagram pictures within Twitter properly, don’t panic. It’s not just you. It seems that Instagram has turned off Twitter cards integration, which means your Instagram experience on Twitter will be going back to pre-cards integration. Twitter has confirmed the issue in this post, and it seems that the tensions between the two companies are reaching critical mass. Here’s the full text from Twitter’s post:

Users are experiencing issues with viewing Instagram photos on Twitter. Issues include cropped images. This is due to Instagram disabling its Twitter cards integration, and as a result, photos are being displayed using a pre-cards experience. So, when users click on Tweets with an Instagram link, photos appear cropped.

Kevin Systrom, Instagram’s chief executive has confirmed the removal of the functionality during the LeWeb technology conference. “We’ve decided that right now, what makes sense, is to direct our users to the Instagram Web site,” Mr. Systrom said. “Obviously things change as a company evolves,” he adds. He also says that other services that use Instagram will not be affected.

This was a sudden, but not unexpected, turn of events for both companies. Photo sharing is fast becoming an extremely lucrative market, a market that both companies are looking to capitalize on. Both companies worked closely prior to Facebook’s acquisition of Instagram, but relations have turned icy as of late, which might be because of Twitter’s plans to integrate their own filter-effects for their photos, which mirrors closely what Instagram does with its service.

Nokia outs Lumia 620, their most affordable Windows Phone 8 device yet

Nokia has just sent word that they’ve just released the newest member to their Windows Phone 8 Lumia family: the 620. Possibly their most affordable Windows Phone 8 smartphone to date, the Lumia 620 is the company’s attempt to break into the lucrative entry level smartphone segment. The Lumia 620 sports a polycarbonate body with their new “dual-shot” manufacturing process, which basically puts another layer of polycarbonate plastic of a different color on top of the base layer, which produces secondary color blends and depth effects.

The Lumia 620 has a smaller, 3.8-inch TFT WVGA ClearBlack display that has a resolution of 800×480, and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor with 1 Ghz dual-core CPU with 512MB of RAM. On the imaging side, the Lumia 620 has a 5-megapixel autofocus camera, along with a front facing VGA camera. The Lumia 620 will start hitting Asian markets (and hopefully ours) once January 2013 rolls around, and will hit Europe and Middle East soon after. Nokia is pegging the price of the Lumia 620 at $249 which roughly translates to Php 10171 before taxes and duties.
