Tokyo netizens toast to astronaut in first space Hangout (VIDEO!)

    0

Ten days ago, a handful of netizens in Tokyo were able to do something that some Sci-Fi fanatics had only dreamed of doing back then—talk to an spaceman right in their living room. Japanese astronaut Akihiko Hoshide had a lovely chat with a handful of people over the Internet while in space via Google+ Hangout.

A number of Tokyo residents, an astronaut moderator, and a Japanese Sci-Fi comic book author all connected to Hoshide’s spacecraft through Google+ and YouTube. This served as the first public hangout from space. The hangout participants were able to ask Hoshide some questions, watch him float inside the spacecraft, and even have a toast with him.

Watch this awesome historic moment in the video below!

Google cancels Android event because of Hurricane Sandy

Google was scheduled to unveil a new version of Android alongside two new Nexus devices tomorrow evening. We use the term “was” because Google has cancelled that event because of a nasty hurricane barreling down the east coast dubbed Sandy. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency, which put a kibosh on Google’s plans because the waterfront that el Goog was going to use for their Android event has been earmarked as an evacuation zone. Hopefully everyone weathers the hurricane ok – we can wait a bit longer for Google’s event.

Risk? Sure. Starcraft Risk? Take my money. Please.

    0

Everyone loves boardgames. If you don’t, you should, but I digress. Risk is one of the best, most long-staying games in the history of boardgames. It has not lost any of its charm over the five and a half decades it has been around. Everything can benefit a bit from a little updating, and Blizzard has done just that. You can choose to play any of the three Starcraft races, and according to the Blizzard site, Starcraft Risk features custom highly-detailed plastic playing pieces, 6 custom sculpted armies, (two for each race), 6 custom sculpted leaders, 15 custom cities, custom game board, and shorter game play. Even if you do own the original set, this is a great addition to your nerd collection. Find more info HERE.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City heading to Android and iOS

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City is heading to the Android and iOS Marketplace, so sayeth Rockstar Games. The iconic game will be ported to Android and other devices as part of their 10th year anniversary release of the ground breaking sandbox game that was originally released back in 2002. The mobile version of the game will have certain mobile enhancements that will only be present on the mobile version of the device, though Rockstar Games did not go into detail what those enhancements might be.

Fans of the game will be able to follow the exploits of Tommy Vercetti in the fictional version of Miami during the 80’s soon, although the developers haven’t really detailed a solid launch date. Until then, keep checking Rockstar’s website for further details, and keep those trigger fingers ready.

Samsung made Google Nexus 10 specs and images leak: 1.7GHz dual-core Exynos 5250 CPU, Mali-T604 graphics, 2GB of RAM, 2560×1600 resolution display

While there has been plenty of leaks of Google’s upcoming Nexus smartphone (which is widely rumored to be based off of LG’s Optimus G design), the search giant has managed to keep their upcoming 10.1-inch tablet a secret. Well, mostly. The people over at BriefMobile has managed to get their paws on one ahead of the October 29 announcement date, and has managed to take pictures and figured out what the hardware of the device is.

Rumors have said that the Google Nexus 10 tablet was made to compliment the smaller Nexus 7 by providing a high-end option for people who enjoy the Android tablet experience. The Nexus 10’s specs are indicative of that – it sports Samsung’s dual-core Exynos 5250 CPU, running at 1.7GHz, complimented by 2GB of memory. The 10.1-inch screen has a resolution of 2560×1600, which means it’s roughly the same as the 4th generation iPad when it comes to screen resolution.

It’s also rumored that the Nexus 10 will ship with the newest Android version on the block, 4.2, or Key Lime Pie. According to the rumors, Android 4.2 will have an updated gallery, multiple user accounts, and a new quick settings menu accessible from the notifications pane, though nothing have yet been confirmed.

One of the biggest questions now is price. While we’ve seen that Google is willing to cut their sales margin to sell tablets, it’s still not a guarantee that the Nexus 10 will be priced as low as their Nexus 7 tablet. We think that Google will need to price their tablet below Apple’s current $499 starting price for their base iPad, though it’s not going to hurt sales if they start selling the things at $400.

LG launches 27-inch Smart TV TM2792 in Korea

While Korean company LG has an absolutely mammoth 84-inch 4K resolution Smart TV, not everyone has enough cash to buy one for themselves. That’s why they made the more affordable 27-inch TM2792. This smaller TV has almost all the Smart TV functionality of its bigger, more massive brother, but at a fraction (we’re hoping) of the pricetag. It will have WiFi sharing and over the air streaming, as well as internet connectivity and will use LG’s Smart Remote technology.

This small TV will also have 3D capabilities, and uses a 1920 x 1080 resolution IPS LCD panel. While there’s no pricing for this little TV yet, there’s an online listingfor it at Amazon.uk that pegs its price at around  £563.49 (which is around Php 37500)No local pricing or availability has been set yet, unfortunately.

Samsung ships 57M smartphones in Q3, more than twice that of rival Apple

While almost everyone in the technology beat knows Samsung is shipping a prodigious number of mobile devices these past few months, the question that remains is exactly how much? Strategy Analytics apparently is in the know, and has said that the Korean manufacturer managed to ship out 56.9 million phones in Q3. To put that in perspective, 162 million smartphones were sold globally, which means that 1/3 of the all smartphones made during Q3 was a Samsung mobile device. Naturally, Samsung’s market share has ballooned, and currently sits at 35% worldwide. And apparently, that’s a record.

“This was the largest number of units ever shipped by a smartphone vendor in a single quarter,” Neil Mawston, Strategy Analytics’ executive director, said in a statement.

That also means that Samsung shipped more than twice the phones than their bitter rival Apple, which puts in perspective Apple’s legal victory over their Korean competitor in the billion dollar ruling in favor of the Cupertino company. This also means that the current mobile race is almost officially a two horse race. “Samsung and Apple combined now account for over half of all smartphones shipped worldwide, up from around one-third a year ago,” said Neil Shah, an analyst at Strategy Analytics. “Volumes have polarized around those two brands.”

    NVIDIA reveals VGX cloud platform

NVIDIA has announced the VGX platform, which utilizes the GPU to allow enterprises to efficiently deliver virtualized workstation performance and capabilities–including rich multimedia and 3D graphics–to users on smartphones, tablets or PCs. This will be especially important as businesses move away from traditional servers and start moving towards the cloud as a resource to deposit, retrieve, use and secure files and programs.

The VGX HyperVisor also enables the use of User-Selectable Machines (USMs)—allowing system administrators to configure and provision the physical VGX hardware to take on the characteristics needed for specific types of users. This gives IT departments the freedom to support multiple pools of user types from a single server, whether they are using traditional workstation PCs or mobile devices.

The two Kepler-based boards are the VGX K1 and K2, which are ideal for data centers that need large amounts of processing power. The VGX K1 board features four entry-level Kepler GPUs and 16 GB of DDR3 RAM, and can support up to 100 users. The K1 is focused more towards those basic desktop users such as those in call centers, whose graphical demands are not very high.

The K2 has two high-end Kepler GPUs for a total 8 GB of GDDR5 RAM. The VGX K2 can support up to 64 users for light graphic use, but caters more to users who need more graphics intensive programs, such as design engineers and video editors. In that case, a user can take control of a single GPU for a maximum of two users who will each have 4 GB of GDDR5 RAM at their disposal. There is no word yet on when either will reach our shores, but we do know that the VGX K2 will be available in the first quarter of 2013.

First look: Samsung Ativ Smart PC Pro.

    1

Several vendors got some space at the Windows 8 Launch here in Singapore. One of the first devices we were able to get our hands on before things got intensely busy was the Samsung Ativ Smart PC Pro. It’s a little docking tablet from the Korean giant, that, naturally, comes with Windows 8. The Ativ at the event wasn’t docked, but it was running the full version of Windows 8, and we were able to sneak in a little hands-on time with it before moving along. Now that we have a little time to process the whole experience, we’ve got a quick little review for you kids!

It’s a pretty handy device. I didn’t have a measuring tape ready, but it was about 7.5 inches high and just shy of 12 inches wide. It has a gorgeous 11.6″ screen that displays in glorious Full HD. It’s quite thin, and reminds me of Samsung’s other, similarly-sized offerings. It sits pretty well in the hand, and weighs well under a kilogram when in tablet mode. It has a pretty even balance, though is a little too large to comfortably walk around with. The Windows 8 experience area didn’t have the base, as the unit was being used to demo the touch-based OS, but we were told that the base would bump the device’s weight up to just under a pound and a half. I can imagine daily carry of the ATIV to be pretty much the same as most laptop form factors, unless you’ve finished all your work and just intend to watch shows. You could very easily and comfortably get away with just this puppy in tablet mode, a case and your regular daily bag. It sits pretty flat, and thrown into the back-most part of a bag, you’d probably forget it was there.

We didn’t really get very much time to play around with the devices, as we were being whisked quickly through the areas that showed us the features of the OS, but in the minute or two I was able to play with the ATIV Smart PC, I was blown away. This was, in all likelihood, the i5 model, and the way it works with the final Windows 8 version is slick as ice. The touch screen is beautifully responsive, and the OS responds to swipes instantly, with no delays. Though more a feature of the OS than the ATIV Smart PC itself, i really like how the screen snap to the correct frame no matter how hard you swipe. It’s like it knows just where you want to go.

All in all, the ATIV Smart PC is a great entry into the Windows 8 device pool. It’s attractive (Samsung has brushed steel backs down to an art), fast and very convenient to have around. If you’re looking for a tablet/Laptop hybrid, this might be just the thing.

NVIDIA announces Quadro K5000 graphics card

Gadgets Magazine is here at the NVIDIA Press Experience Day here in Bangkok, Thailand, where they just announced the NVIDIA Quadro K5000 for the Asia Pacific market. The NVIDIA Quadro K5000 will support up to four display outputs, so this is ideal for those who are in need of multiple monitors. Its H.264 encoder supports up to a 4096×4096 resolution, so it will also be compatible with the upcoming 4K displays. The card has 4 GB of GDDR5 RAM on a 256-bit memory interface. The new NVIDIA Kepler architecture introduces the concept of bindless textures, which enables the GPU to reference textures directly in memory. Pre-Kepler NVIDIA texture binding models only could support up to 128 simultaneous textures—the Quadro K5000 will support over one million simultaneous textures.

Those in the manufacturing, energy, video and graphic editing and science industries will appreciate the power of the Quadro K5000. No word as to when it will be available in the Philippines yet, but the market retail price is estimated to be in the neighborhood of US$2249 (Php 95,582), so if you’re looking to be on the cutting edge of technology, you might want to save up for when it hits our shores.

Fujifilm unveils X Series; X-Pro 1 leads the pack

Fujifilm launched the newest additions to their line of shooters, the X-Series cameras. Leading the pack is the Fujifilm X-Pro 1—the company’s new high-end interchangeable lens camera.

The X-Pro 1 features the original X Mount, which can hold any of the compatible Fujinon XF interchangeable lenses (each of the available lenses wields a 1/3-step aperture ring). It packs a 16-megapixel APS-C-sized X-Trans CMOS sensor in a die-cast magnesium alloy chassis. It has an ISO range of 100-25600 (expanded sensitivity setting) and is capable of taking videos in Full HD (1920 x 1080) at 24fps.

At the launch, we were able to check out the device upclose and take some photos of it.

Upfront, we have the viewfinder selector, lens mount, lens release button, and the AF assist/self-timer lamp. You’ll also see the Hybrid Multi Viewfinder, which allows you to instantly switch between using an electronic viewfinder (EVF) and an optical viewfinder (OVF). You can also switch optical viewfinder magnification according to the focal length of the attached lens

There’s also see a focus mode selector below the lens mount.

On top of the X-Pro 1 is a hotshoe for the optional GN20 external flash, the shutter speed dial, the power switch, the shutter release button, the function button, and the exposure compensation dial.

The back of the camera is pretty much loaded. There, you can see the eye sensor, the dioptrics correction lens, the View Mode button, the command dial, the exposure/focus lock button, the playback button, the display button, and five-way navigation controls. Plus, it has a Quick Menu button that launches a one-screen menu that allows you to control the ISO level, White Balance and other camera settings

The 3-inch LCD screen is flanked with the Drive/Playback zoom-in button, the AE/Playback zoom-out button, and the AF/delete button.

The camera also features a built-in multiplex exposure function, a film simulation mode (where the camera tries to achieve the tonal quality of certain film brands like PROVIA and ASTIA), and color filters for enhanced monochrome shooting.

The Fujifilm X-Pro 1 has an SRP of PHP 69,950 (body only).
