    The iPhone 5’s new LTE capability may be just be the opening HTC and Samsung need to fight back

    So, Apple’s iPhone 5 is finally official. Along with all the other expected hardware updates, the new device is also capable of LTE, or long-term evolution, that oft promised revolutionary new technology that’s set to change the way we experience mobile internet. Unfortunately, that same technology may just be the opening that HTC and Samsung, two companies that are currently embroiled in an expensive legal battle with Apple, needs to fight back.

    See, to be able to run LTE, Apple used the LTE radio standard, a standard which is based on hundreds of different other patents. Unfortunately, some of those patents are already owned by Samsung and HTC. Sure, Apple also holds some of these patents, unfortunately, Samsung and HTC have far bigger LTE patent portfolios simply because both companies have been making LTE capable devices for a while now. Samsung wouldn’t miss the chance to try and get the latest flagship device of its main rival banned, or at least, delayed – an industry source is quoted as saying that “Samsung Electronics has decided to take immediate legal action against the Cupertino-based Apple. Countries in Europe and even the United States ― Apple’s home-turf ― are our primary targets.”

    As for HTC, a US judge has already said that the company’s LTE patents are probably valid when they were challenged by Apple. HTC probably won’t be looking for a ban on Apple products, as it’s more likely going to use its patent leverage to get a nice, fat settlement from Apple, but that may change, depending on the company’s direction.

    Both companies possibly won’t be able to issue injunctions fast enough to stall the initial rollout of the iPhone 5, but they may be able to block further shipments into the US and other territories further down the line. One thing’s for sure – Apple is on the defensive this time around.

    New YouTube app for iPhone debuts

    In the midst of the iPhone 5 debut, the App Store has debuted their new YouTube app. The new iPhone app is available worldwide and unlocks tens of thousands of official music videos, as well as bringing lots of new features to improve finding and sharing awesome videos and channels. It’s a new app built by YouTube engineers, to give our iPhone users the best mobile experience.

    In addition to watching the latest music videos, with a swipe to the left edge of the screen, you can see all the YouTube channels you are subscribed to, and the latest search tools will suggest new videos and sort through videos or channels. You can also flip through related videos, comments and more info while watching videos.

    You can also share videos with your friends via Google+, Facebook, Twitter, email, and text message. This app is also available for iPad, and there is even a made-for-iPad YouTube app in the works.

    SB LiMotive disbands; Bosch to take over US and Germany subsidiaries

    The two parent companies behind the SB LiMotive joint venture—Bosch and Samsung—have decided to part ways. While Samsung is to assume control over the operations in Korea, Bosch will take over the entire battery systems business. This includes the SB LiMotive Germany GmbH subsidiary in Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg in Germany and Cobasys in the U.S.

    Bosch claims that it has decided to focus on developing and producing batteries for hybrid and electric vehicles. “When it comes to electromobility, a market with great potential for the future, we have already made a successful start with diverse projects, and are driving forward many other developments. In restructuring our operations, we can respond better to our customers’ requirements with respect to market focus and speed, and will continue to work all out to expand our market activities,” says Dr. Bernd Bohr, the chairman of the Automotive Group of Robert Bosch GmbH.

    As part of the company’s plans to expand its activities in electrochemistry and in producing of lithium-ion battery cells, Bosch aims to cooperate closely with specialist partners to work on high-performance battery cells in Germany. They also hope to set up a European specialist network.

    According to Bosch, all development and supply agreements with Samsung will still be continued. Additionally, both parties have agreed to grant each other access to patents.

    5th generation iPod Touch official, A5 dual-core processor, 5-megapixel camera, Siri onboard

    Along with the iPhone 5,  Apple also announced their new 5th generation iPod Touch. The 5th generation iPod Touch is unsurprisingly, thinner than the previous device, and is only 6.1mm thick and weighs in at only 88 grams. It looks similar to the previous offering, but carries the same 4-inch display of the iPhone 5, as well as the new dock connector. The 5th generation iPod Touch is powered by Apple’s A5 dual-core processor, and Apple says it delivers 7x faster graphics than the old iPod Touch. Apple promises up to 40 hours of music playback on the new iPod Touch, with 8 hours of video.

    The iPod Touch also gets a new, 5-megapixel iSight camera that’s backside illuminated and has a f/2.4, 5-element lens. Surprisingly, Siri will now make an appearance on the iPod Touch, a first for the software. The 5th generation iPod Touch will come in raw aluminum, black, blue, yellow and red.  The 5th generation iPod Touch will be $299  for the 32GB version and $399 for the 64GB version. The 5th generation iPod Touch will ship this October.

    7th generation iPod Nano official!

    Apple has announced the 7th generation Nano at their iPhone 5 event earlier today. The 7th generation Nano is still pretty small, but now has a wider screen than ever before. Even though it has a wider, 2.5-inch multi-touch screen, the device is still 5.4mm thin, which is 38% thinner than the previous generation.

    The device will come in seven colors, and will use the new dock connector that’s also present in the iPhone 5. There’s an FM tuner thrown in with DVR functionality,  as well as a pedometer and Bluetooth capability, great for wireless streaming. The 7th generation Nano is able to run for about 30 hours before needing a charge. The new Nano will retail for $149 and will have a capacity of 16GB. The 7th generation Nano will ship this October.

     

     

    iPhone 5 finally official, 4-inch display, A6 processor, iOS6, LTE on board

    It’s finally official. Apple has officially launched the successor to the iPhone 4S, the iPhone 5. Most of the design leaks were pretty spot on, as the iPhone 5 retains the iconic look and feel of the iPhone 4S albeit in a somewhat larger device. The iPhone 5 sports a 4-inch retina display with 1136 x 640 resolution, has a pixel density of 326 ppi, and only weighs in at 112 grams, which is 20% lighter than the previous version. Incidentally, Apple claims that the iPhone 5 is the world’s thinnest phone, at only 7.6mm thick. The device is the same width as the previous device, and is only slightly taller to accommodate the bigger screen. The screen has 44% better color saturation than the previous device, and has full sRGB rendering.

    Apple has also improved the wireless capabilities of the iPhone 5, and has included GPRS, EDGE, EV-DO (for carriers that use it), HSPA, HSPA+, DC-HSDPA (for carriers that use it) and LTE into the mix. Unfortunately, there wasn’t any indication that the Philippines will be included in the initial LTE list that Apple showed, but that may change later on.

    The iPhone 5 is powered by a new chip, the A6, which boasts 2x faster CPU and graphics performance compared to the old A5 chip. It’s also 22% smaller, and a lot more energy efficient, which theoretically means more time on the go and less time stuck in the charger. Apple says that the iPhone 5 can go for 8 hours without a charge using 3G or LTE, and 10 hours on WiFi browsing.

    The optics on the iPhone 5 has been revamped as well. The iPhone 5 has an 8-megapixel, backside illumination camera with a hybrid IR filter and five-element lens, bearing a f/2.4 aperture. When paired with the A6 chip, the new camera is able to deliver low-light photo capture that’s 40% faster than the iPhone 4S, as well as spatial noise reduction. The new optics is also able to take full HD video, and can now take photos even while recording. The front-facing camera also got a bit of a lift, as it’s now a 720p deal, and is also backside illuminated.

    The new dock connector is dubbed Lighting by Apple, and is an all-digital deal with an 8-signal design. It’s reversible and 80% smaller than the old connector. Apple is also hard at work with third-party manufacturers to create docks and other devices for the new iPhone. Apple has also created a dock adopter that will allow you to use the iPhone 5 with older, legacy docks.

    As expected, the iPhone 5 runs on iOS6 and Apple has also improved a few core features with the OS. Better Maps and Safari, as well as the ability to share tabs from your desktop straight to your phone, dubbed iCloud Tabs. Mail also gets a bit of an enhancement as well, and now allows you to mark people as a VIP, which then sends their mail to a separate inbox. Siri also seems to have gotten a slight upgrade, and now allows you to launch apps by voice.

    For the folks in the US, the pricing for the iPhone 5 are as follows: $199 for 16GB. $299 for 32GB, $399 for 64GB. Pre-orders for the iPhone 5 start on the 14th, and will ship out on the 21st for customers inUS, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore. iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, 3GS, new iPad, iPad 2 and iPod touch will be getting iOS 6 which will hit on September 19. No non-contract pricing has been announced yet.

     

    LG details design on Optimus G, details their Crystal Reflection process

    LG’s mighty proud of its newest smartphone, the Optimus G. Why not? This next generation smartphone is toting all the latest tech along with it, and has some pretty impressive design cues. LG says that the screen blends seamlessly with the rest of the device when it’s off, and that the Crystal Reflection process used for the first time on the back of LG’s new Optimus G smartphone was developed and patented over a period of 15 months. They continue to brag that it “gives the Optimus G’s back cover the ability to display different patterns depending on the viewing angle and lighting. The intricate polarized 3D pattern, which sparkles just under the surface, looks almost jewel-like.     Samsung Galaxy S III getting Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update in October

    Here’s some fantastic news for you Galaxy S III owners: Samsung has confirmed that the Galaxy S III will be getting Android 4.1 Jelly Bean in October. The news came alongside the announcement of UK’s first 4G network and a variant of the Galaxy S III running on LTE to support it. Unfortunately, there’s no de-facto date when that particular update will come around, but at least Galaxy S III owners can now start counting the days till October when they will finally taste Jelly Bean and all the awesome things that’s associated with it.

    Sony outs Cyber-shot DSC-RX1, first full frame point-and-shoot camera

    If one of the camera manufacturers told us before that they’d be putting a full-frame sensor in a point-and-shoot camera, we’d probably call them crazy. Well, crazy or not, Sony has apparently sensed there was a demand for such a product and have gone ahead and released the Cyber-shot DSC-RX1, the first full frame point-and-shoot camera in the world. As expected, this particular camera packs an advanced 35mm full-frame 24.3 MP Exmor CMOS sensor and an exceptional  Carl Zeiss T*t 35mm f/2.0 fixed lens into a compact body.

    Upon further reflection, going full frame does make a lot of sense, as it gives users better ISO performance across the board, as well as giving you the obvious benefits of having a full frame image. It’s overall size and weight (4.5 inches wide by 3 inches tall and weighing just over a pound) make it a fantastic tool for professionals who want to have roughly the same sensor as their bigger DSLRs but none of the bulk. You will be paying through the nose for one however, as Sony has listed the price for the DSC-RX1 at $2800 or about Php 116,102 before taxes and duties when in drops in stores this November.

    Intel developing “contextual awareness” technology

    Have you ever wondered whether or not you should send that text, or to make that call? Have you wondered whether you should text or call? Will someone reply to it right away, or will it just go straight to their inbox or voicemail? Intel claims that it is developing “contextual awareness” technology, which will advise you of the best method to use when contacting others.

    “I want to call my wife or text my wife during the workday, but I don’t know what she’s doing. She’s out and about, she’s busy, she’s doing something–I never know whether I should call her or text her. With this technology, I will now have a picture of what she’s doing, and I can make that decision,” said Intel engineer Philip Muse.

    The technology takes advantage of what Muse called hard sensors and soft sensors–hard sensors being such built-in capabilities as your mobile device’s accelerometer or GPS, and soft sensors being based on event in your calendar, your interaction with applications, or other software-based information. These sensors share your user state among all your devices–smartphone, PC, whatever–to provide the contextual awareness system with a idea of what you’re up to at any given moment. Knowing that, it can advise your friends, family and colleagues the best way to contact you or interact with you.

    A phone equipped with contextual awareness technology, for example, will display an icon showing whether the person with whom you want to get in touch is at their desk, walking around, or playing music–it can even listen in to that person’s surroundings, should that permission be given. “I know now what’s going on at the other end of the phone,” Muse said, “before I even place the call or send a text.”

    Say you want to contact someone who’s driving in their car. But you’re in a meeting, so you can’t call them on the phone. You can text them, and it will go directly to speech, and the recipient can speak their response, but it will be translated back into text, so you don’t have to excuse yourself from the room, and they won’t have to risk being fined for using their phone while driving.

    For those who think that contextual awareness will invade way too much into their lives, the preferences can be set by each user, and you can completely disable this option. However, it might send a whole different message to those who may adapt to this technology and are constantly plugged into the grid.

    Singapore Airlines lets you win two Business Class tickets by playing online games

    To celebrate Singapore Airlines’ (SIA) fifth year of operating the world’s largest passenger aircraft, the Airbus 380 (A380), the carrier is launching the fourth and final part of its online interactive chronicle of the company’s milestones, SIAJoruneys.com.

    The fourth part will run from September 15 to October 23. To participate in SIA Journeys, you must create a “Passport” and accumulate points by playing and completing various games and activities. The player with the most number of points wins two round-trip Business Class tickets to any SIA destination. Other prizes include KrisShop vouchers and digital downloads. The highest-scoring Philippine-based player gets a chance to win 75,000 KrisFlyer miles, which is equivalent to a round-trip Economy Class ticket to any SIA A380 destination. You can earn bonus points for being a KrisFlyer member or for unlocking extra hard levels.

    The third part of SIA Journeys is still underway until September 14. The global winner gets two Economy Class tickets to any SIA destination and the Philippine-based winner gets 25,000 KrisFlyer miles, which is equivalent to a roundtrip Economy Class ticket from Manila to Singapore.

    Lenovo unveils water-resistant dual-sim Android smartphone, the A660

    Smartphone makers have realized accidentally dropping your devices in water really, really sucks. That’s possibly the reason why more and more manufacturers are releasing water-resistant devices to the market. Lenovo has joined in the whole “waterproof-smartphone” bandw-, I mean, craze, and has released the dual-sim, water-resistant A660. This particular smartphone will be rocking Android 4.0 and sports a 4-inch display that’s protected by Gorilla glass. When it comes to power, you’re looking at a 1GHz dual-core processor and dual-sim capabilities, as well as a 5-megapixel camera. Like other water-resistant smartphones in the market, Lenovo’s A660 is IP67 certified, which means it’s dustproof as well and can survive being submerged in water 1 meter in depth for 30 minutes. No word on availability or price yet, unfortunately.

    Google’s Glasses end up on the runway during New York Fashion Week

    Google’s revolutionary Project Glass (or Google Glass, as they’re more commonly known) has shown up during New York Fashion Week courtesy of Designer Diane von Furstenberg. The new, hi-tech peepers were used alongside the clothes she designed for her spring 2013 and to be honest, it looks great on the models.

    Von Furstenberg’s use of Project Glass isn’t just for looks – the designer posted behind-the-scenes footage of the show and video taken during the show will be used by the designer to showcase her creative process, in a short film dubbed  “DVF through Glass” scheduled to be released on September 13th. It’s also a great way to show to the world that the upcoming product can become stylish, hi-tech accessories for everyone, not just die-hard technology nerds.

    This may be the first official images of a mobile device running on Smart’s LTE network

    We’ve all been wondering when Smart would officially unveil the devices that they will be bundling with their LTE service, and although there’s no official word yet, the telco has sent us these images of an LTE enabled Galaxy S II running on their network.

    That signifies that the company may be close to releasing the official list of mobile devices that they will offering with their LTE service, which, let’s face it, is the entire point of LTE. Don’t get too discouraged about that somewhat aged device (and the slightly lower speed than advertised 41Mbps ), we’re sure that Smart will be offering LTE versions of the latest smartphones for their future service.  The slower speed is because of the limitations of the device, not of the network. Newer LTE devices will be able to go up to the full 41Mbps.
