“Our Choice” by Al Gore now an iPad App

Going green as well as going beyond “Earth Hour” has become an on-going and pervasive trend in today’s businesses. And one figure who remains actively dedicated to educating humankind about the causes and consequences of global warming and offering solutions to the looming crises implicit in the changes to the earth’s climate and habitability is Nobel laureate and former US Vice President, Al Gore.

Push Pop Press,  a new digital publishing platform that’s redefining the way we publish and experience books, has launched Al Gore’s 2009 book “Our Choice,” a book which proposes a plan to solve the climate crisis, into an iPad app.

The app includes an introduction from Al Gore who provides a tutorial, though that app itself boasts intuitive controls and easy navigation between chapters as well as turning pages. The app also allows users to view images and pictures full-screen while expandable elements contain geotags that are displayed on a global map. With all of this included, you’re sure to come out wanting to save the planet now more than ever.

Symantec ISTR XVI brief: the internet has a lot of bad people

If there ever was a time you thought the internet was a place where unicorns prance around without care, you’re in for a rude shock. Symantec has just shared their 16th ISTR (Internet Security Threat Report) with members of the media yesterday, and the report highlights worrying trends in this series of tubes we call the internet.

Aside from the regular threats – more targeted attacks with more sophisticated coding – probably the most worrying threat that’s hitting close to home is the spread of malicious code through the use of social networks.

Hackers and other malicious coders have embraced the rise of Facebook and Twitter wholeheartedly and have used both as a base to deliver their payloads. They use attacks specially tailored to a target, using the marks’ own data against them. Once an account is successfully attacked, they leverage news feeds to spread spam, scams and other attacks.

    0

For Twitter, the attackers use shortened URLs to hide malicious links. According to the ISTR, 73% were clicked 11 times or more when compared to longer URLs.

Another worrying threat that’s rising is mobile attacks. With the advent of smartphones that are fast approaching regular PCs when it comes to computing power, it only makes sense that attacks on the different platforms will continue to rise. Mobile vulnerabilities are steadily rising, with 115 vulnerabilities in 2009 rising to 163 in 2010, a 42% increase. Symantec wouldn’t say it, but it seems that the Android platform is particularly more vulnerable to attacks simply because of its nature. The open system and loose development guidelines mean that it’s easier to develop and publish malicious programs masquerading as legitimate software.

So how can you protect yourself? The easiest and best way is to practice a hefty amount of common sense. If you see links or application invites posted on your wall from your friends that are out of place for their character or was sent en masse to his/her other contacts, that’s already a red flag. Same thing for FB chat – if a friend that you don’t talk to that often suddenly pops in giving you a link to visit, ask them about it through a PM. For Twitter, be careful about the links you visit, especially shortened ones. Don’t go clicking on everything you see, especially ones that promise scandalous videos like the recently made Lady Gaga Twitter scam. Finally, make sure to invest in a good anti-virus software solution, like Symantec and make sure it’s always updated.

    iPhone turntable concept design

For all you audio aficionados out there, the cumbersome task of digitizing your vinyl collection for portability may soon be over.  A designer by the name of Olivier Meynard has forged a breakthrough concept which fuses the worlds of analog and digital together.

In theory, the machine is essentially a turntable with an iPhone charging dock embedded into it.  Users will simply have to play their favorite LP record or 45 and simultaneously record and convert songs for instant use with the iPhone.

Granted, while this is certainly not the first machine or design to hit the market, Meynard’s idea is unique because it is slated to have its own built in amp encased within a modern yet sleek exterior.

Osama bin Laden still doing damage as a Facebook malware tool

The mastermind of the 9/11 attacks may be dead, but it doesn’t mean that his name is done doing damage. We’ve been seeing a large amount of Facebook posts created by an app that’s taking advantage of the demise of the most wanted terrorist on earth.

The post promises that you’ll see Osama’s execution video. Instead, it’ll spread the same link to your contacts and flood them with the same request. It’s still not clear what that particular threat does, but it’s probably safe to assume that it’s not good. So for your own sake, DON’T click on that link. This is a popular tactic for most malware creators, that preys on people’s inherent curiosity to spread their malicious code. Use a healthy amount of common sense when it comes to clicking on things that you see on your Facebook wall, and if you really want news, go and visit a well established news site.

Grant money well spent – scientists make it possible to kiss over the internet

You gotta hand it to the Japanese. When they think outside of the box, they really, really, really think outside of the box. Take the Kajimoto Laboratory at the University of Electro-Communications for instance. While most other places like MIT are researching boring, plain old robotics, these guys are doing the stuff that really matters. Like being able to kiss someone from across the internet. We’ll let the post from DigInfo.tv do the talking:

“This device is for communications within the mouth, in other words, the goal is to obtain the feeling of kissing. If you take one device in your mouth and turn it with your tongue, the other device turns in the same way. If you turn it back the other way, then your partner’s turns back the same way, so your partner’s device turns whichever way your own device turns. It is achieved only by motor rotations, and you control the rotation positions via PC. It is called a bilateral control, and the turn angle information is sent reciprocally by both devices to maintain the same position. Right now the values are handled by one PC, but if a system is put together to handle the values over a network, then it would be easy for this operation to be conducted remotely.”

Curious to see how the whole thing works? Well, we’ve embedded a video to convey what words fail to express:

Hopefully this device will be the stepping stone to making a gadget that allows you to punch stupid internet commenters in the face.

    Apple reigns supreme

Companies are looking lame with the era of Apple taking over today’s tech world. According to reports, Apple is now the world’s second-most valuable company, following Exxon Mobil Corp. Apple reported a net income of $5.99 billion for the period of January-March alone, almost a double of last year’s figures. A recorded 18.65 million iPhones we’re shipped during the quarter and even iPad tablets are so in demand that the company couldn’t make enough to satisfy the number of demands.

Apple already kicked off Microsoft from its throne as world’s most valuable tech company. Microsoft reported that the income from Windows OS declined for two quarters because fewer people are buying Windows Computers.

Nokia also drops off the Smartphone race losing its users to Apple. It says to slash 7,000 jobs on layoffs and outsourcing.

BlackBerry also said on Thursday that the net income, revenue and unit sales will be lower than of prior forecast.

Apple is still running to be one of the strongest in the tech business and it is foreseen to be on the race for quite some time.

Formula 1 cars will run on electricity – in the pit lane at least

If there’s one thing you don’t associate with Formula One, it’s the sound of silence. The roar of massive engines is pretty much one of the main attractions of the sport, and if the FIA, the sport’s ruling body gets its way, there’s going to be a whole lot of silence, in the pit lane at least. The FIA is planning to introduce hybrid systems in F1 cars once 2013 rolls around, that will give the cars the ability to cruise in and out of the pit lane using electric power. F1 cars already use a hybrid system of sorts in the form of KERS (kinetic energy recovery systems), which gives drivers a boost of 80 HP over a period of 6.67 seconds per lap that helps drivers to overtake opponents. Of course, there’s a lot of opposition against the move and the planned shift to a smaller, 1.6 liter four cylinder hybrid engine rather than the traditional 2.4 litre naturally aspirated V8 one that’s used today. Williams chairman Adam Parr is pushing hard for the change, saying that “Formula One is ultimately defined by its technology and Formula One’s constant reinvention of itself, whether it’s on the chassis side or the engine side, is fundamental to the nature of the sport.” He adds that “there are people who fiercely opposed KERS who are now big supporters of it, including Ferrari. The world is changing, we have to change.”

PSN hack fallout – Sony says sorry, subscribers will be given free content

Now that the dust has cleared on one of the biggest data breaches in history, Sony’s giving affected users of the PSN and their Qriocity subscribers free content and complimentary subscriptions for their troubles. Patrick Seybold, Sr. Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media wrote on the Playstation blog that “the company (Sony) is committed to helping its customers protect their personal data and will provide a complimentary offering to assist users in enrolling in identity theft protection services and/or similar programs. The implementation will be at a local level and further details will be made available shortly in each region.” In addition, he says that “the company will also rollout the PlayStation Network and Qriocity “Welcome Back” program, to be offered worldwide, which will be tailored to specific markets to provide our consumers with a selection of service options and premium content as an expression of the company’s appreciation for their patience, support and continued loyalty.”

Components of the Welcome back program include:

    • Each territory will be offering selected PlayStation entertainment content for free download. Specific details of this content will be announced in each region soon.
    • All existing PlayStation Network customers will be provided with 30 days free membership in the PlayStation Plus premium service. Current members of PlayStation Plus will receive 30 days free service.
    • Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity subscribers (in countries where the service is available) will receive 30 days free service.

Sony’s also beefing up their security, and has created the position of Chief Information Security Officer who will be reporting directly to Shinji Hasejima, Chief Information Officer of Sony Corporation. Additionally, Sony’s moving the system to a new data center that has been in the works for a few months now, and will be pushing a critical PSN update to its subscribers that, among other things, requires the user to change his/her password immediately.

It’s still unclear how much damage this particular network breach has had on Sony, as consumers will now be wary of giving their personal data to the electronics giant. Will Sony’s new security protocols withstand another determined cyber-attack? Only time will tell.

War of the patents heats up, Samsung files new suits against Apple in the US

    6

Samsung’s turning up the heat against Apple, as the Korean tech behemoth has now filed a patent suit in the state of California against the firm from Cupertino. The suit is targeting Apple’s iPhone, which allegedly violates 10 Samsung patents that “relate to fundamental innovations that increase mobile device reliability, efficiency, and quality, and improve user interface in mobile handsets and other products.” Samsung has already filed three different suits in Germany, Korea and Japan against Apple. While Apple’s chief operating officer Tim Cook said last week that Samsung is a “is a very valued component supplier to us”, this latest development between the two tech giants might catalyst for Apple to look for another partner.
