Research data: 68% of people can’t identify a phishing website

NordLayer’s expert analysis reveals the ten most common cybersecurity mistakes employees make. With hybrid work models and working from anywhere still popular, the risks increase, along with potential costs for businesses. A cybersecurity expert from NordLayer shares tips on what businesses can do to avoid these mistakes.

    Threats are everywhere

Organizations aren’t only made up of routers, servers, and networks — there are also people. Sometimes, employee negligence can lead to cyberattacks as tricking a person is always easier and doesn’t require as much technical knowledge as spoofing an advanced security system, and hackers know it.

Today, more than 90% of all cyberattacks begin with a phishing email. This cyberattack is also prevalent even in social media. For example, a phishing attempt is the second most prominent scam on LinkedIn, as revealed by NordLayer’s study. What is worse, according to a cyber security company NordVPN, 68% of people can’t identify a phishing website. Regarding tools and solutions to keep employees and businesses safe, matters could be better, as research reveals that more than 70% of companies believe that they wasted 25–100% of their cybersecurity budget.

    What are employees doing?

The figures above demonstrate how important it is for organizations to pay attention to employees’ online behavior. Carlos Salas, head of engineering at NordLayer, underlines the following most common employee cybersecurity habits that may impose a risk to businesses:

    1. Weak passwords. People tend to prioritize convenience over security, often reusing weak passwords on all of their accounts. The latest research by NordPass demonstrates what the most common passwords are and how often they are being reused.
    2. Keeping business data on personal devices. With company networks expanding rapidly, more employees use unsupervised devices for business purposes, making it harder to ensure the security of sensitive information.
    3. Clicking before thinking. Fast-paced work environments require employees to communicate and act quickly, often leading to them clicking on malicious phishing links — especially if they lack sufficient cybersecurity training.
    4. Leaving work equipment unattended. Doing so can be especially dangerous if a person is working remotely or in a public place because company data can be exposed to strangers.
    5. Not taking cybersecurity responsibly. The most advanced technological solutions are helpless against human factor-induced mistakes, such as falling victim to social engineering.

What can companies do to help employees avoid mistakes?

“Cybersecurity is crucial, and negligence might be costly for businesses. This is why it’s in the best interest of companies to treat employee cyber awareness seriously. One of the most effective ways to do so is to organize regular cybersecurity awareness training,” says Salas. “It’s important to inform employees about every possible threat they can encounter and raise awareness about the shared collective responsibility for the company’s security. Spreading awareness is one step towards a whole new organizational culture.”

Sigita Jurkynaitė, an information security manager at Nord Security, agrees with Salas and gives the following advice to businesses:

“The worst takeaway would be to start treating your employees as the weakest link. That’s the opposite of what you should be doing because treating your employees as partners and investing in their cybersecurity awareness can pay back tenfold. However, it shouldn’t be done just to ‘check the box.’ The process should be a continuous one — make it engaging and fun, and avoid resorting to punishments if an employee fails a test.”

Lenovo and Erwan Heussaff showcase stories of the Filipino spirit in “Let’s Get Into It” Series

The “Let’s Get Into It” series offers a look into the food, traditions, and stories of local communities in the Philippines, starting in the lush forests of Palawan.

In the series, James Beard Foundation Awardee, content creator and creative director Erwan Heussaff and travel video channel FEATR are bringing to life stories from around the Philippines with the help of the latest Lenovo Yoga and Legion devices.

Consumers today have access to a world of entertainment, inspiration, and knowledge, whether they are viewers or creators. Everyday, people are bringing their ideas to life in many ways and on different platforms. With innovation and technology readily available, everyone can become a creator, but to stand out among the rest, one should be equipped with the best tools to get the job done.

“We live in a world brimming with inspiration and possibility. Content creation gives us the power to showcase our creativity and tell stories that can greatly impact audiences around the world”, Erwan shares. “Lenovo has been a long-time partner through many creative journeys,” he continues. “As creators, we need the right set of tools that will help us share our stories and experiences anytime and anywhere. With my Yoga Pro 9i, no matter where I am, I am able to bring the power to create, edit videos and photos, which I would normally do at home on my desktop.”

The latest generation of the Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i is Intel-powered and supercharged with the Lenovo X Power, giving creators a machine that can provide maximum power and handle the challenges of both work and play.

“Aside from the power and portability, my favorite aspect of the device has to be its overall design,” Erwan shares. “I’m very passionate about sustainability, and Lenovo is able to incorporate this into its devices. The elegant design of this device uses 50% recycled materials in both the bottom cover and the keyboard.”

In addition to the series and to further empower creators to make their inspirations to creations, Lenovo is hosting a workshop with Erwan at Cyberzone, SM City Makati, on September 14, Thursday from 12:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. Attendees will get up close and personal with the Lenovo Yoga Pro 9i and Legion Slim 5i and receive tips and tricks on how to level-up their game on content creation.

The workshop is limited to 30 participants only and is available for all existing Lenovo users. Mober enhances sustainable delivery with expanded fleet of 60 electric vehicles, advancing green commitment

Mober, a frontrunner in green logistics services in the Philippines, proudly announced the expansion of its fleet with 30 new six-wheeler electric trucks and four three-wheelers, augmenting its capability to offer sustainable delivery solutions in the region.

With its recent fleet enhancement, Mober now boasts a total of 60 vehicles, encompassing 39 e-trucks, 17 e-vans, and 4 three-wheelers. The logistics powerhouse sets its sights on the Southeast Asian green delivery market, with ambitions of amassing a fleet of 100 electric vans and trucks by year-end and a staggering 500 units within the next two years.

Earlier this year, Mober reinforced its commitment to major brands by increasing its dedicated fleet for IKEA Philippines. This strategic partnership, along with the recent expansion, positions Mober as a valuable partner to prominent multinational FMCG titans such as Unilever Philippines and Nestlé Philippines. Notably, the company is commencing a pilot delivery program with the largest chain of coffee shops in the world, underlining its commitment to sustainable initiatives.

As Mober steers towards its sustainable goals, it’s concurrently finalizing a loan application with government-owned entities, Landbank and the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP). Both institutions are ardent advocates of the Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act (EVIDA Law), or Republic Act No. 1169, which encourages the adoption of electric vehicles in the Philippines.

Mober CEO Dennis Ng remarked, “Our unwavering dedication to merging efficiency with sustainability is evident in our aggressive push for electric vehicles. With each addition to our fleet, we’re not merely growing – we’re leading a shift towards a more sustainable Philippine logistics landscape.”

Earlier in the year, Mober accentuated its green trajectory by partnering with Swiss coffee behemoth Nespresso for a carbon-neutral delivery initiative. Moreover, their alliance with the location technology enterprise, What3words, optimizes the delivery process, granting customers the ability to specify exact delivery locations with a unique three-word combination, ensuring precision and promptness.

Globally, the logistics and transport sector looms large as a primary carbon contributor, accounting for approximately 24% of global emissions. The European Environment Agency has sounded the alarm that, barring significant interventions, logistics could account for nearly 40% of global CO2 emissions by 2050.

Elucidating Mober’s green aspirations, Ng added, “We aim to be synonymous with green logistics. When businesses contemplate eco-friendly delivery solutions, Mober should invariably be their first thought.”

The Philippine government remains at the forefront of the electric vehicle evolution. The Department of Energy (DOE) has been vocal about ramping up EV adoption, seeking to curb the nation’s dependence on fossil fuels. Concurrently, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has floated a proposal for a temporary five-year tariff waiver. In a decisive move, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. enacted Executive Order No. 12 series of 2023, aiming to democratize access to electric vehicles for a broader Filipino audience.

Hyundai Motor PH reveals 6th EV charging station at SM Lanang Premier in Davao

Hyundai Motor Philippines Inc. (HMPH) completes its 6th Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Station together with SM Supermalls. This final site for 2023 at SM Lanang Premier was revealed during the first day of the Hyundai Mobility Experience (HME), which happens to also be on tour at the same mall. Located at the basement parking near the main entrance, it is equipped with a Type 2 AC Charger that may be utilized by all EV and hybrid car owners for free. The other five, under this partnership, forged back in July, include SM Mall of Asia, The Podium, SM Fairview, SM City Clark, and SM City Cebu.

Apart from this announcement, mallgoers were invited to come to the Main Atrium until September 10. They found the latest collection of Hyundais and enjoyed free beverage care of Brew + Bakes from the mini café. This has become a crowd-favorite and staple in the brand’s roadshows as it interactively showcases the featured IONIQ model’s Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality – which is responsible for the power being used to freshly brew a cup.

Visitors were also encouraged to sign up for a test drive, to get a Hyundai-branded umbrella, or to place a reservation, to receive an exclusive PHP10,000 discount voucher. At the Hyundai’s Grand Before Service Activity (GBSA) at the Open Parking Lot D, visitors were offered a free 23-Point Car Check Up with Bactakleen disinfection, regardless of their car’s make or model. This was coupled with a free Shell fuel voucher and a Hyundai-branded tumbler.

“We are very happy to be letting Davaoeños experience the Hyundai brand in more ways than one. Apart from our newly opened EV charging slot, we have prepared a variety of activities for old and new customers,” according to Mark Parulan, marketing general manager of HMPH. “HME was developed to convey our vision of innovation and sustainability all around the Philippines. This is why we are excited to be bringing it out of Metro Manila and combining it with our special aftersales initiative. We intend to continue on with this for the remainder of the year to let even more Filipinos discover how much we value every step of the ownership journey and are constantly searching for ways to enrich it.”

HME is heading to Cebu from September 29 to October 1 and Pampanga from October 27 to 29. To know more about the details, check out Hyundai Mobility Experience | Hyundai Motor Philippines and Hyundai Motor Philippines’ official Facebook and Instagram.

Viber eliminates spam calls with the new Caller ID feature

Rakuten Viber, the global leader in private and secure messaging and voice-based communication, has launched its new Caller ID feature in the Philippines, helping Filipinos identify unknown callers so they always have the option to receive or reject calls as they wish and protect themselves from spammers at the same time.

When was the last time you saw a number pop up on your phone screen and ignored it because the caller wasn’t saved in your contact list? Yes, it could be a spam call you should ignore and block. But what if it’s an important call you really need to pick up like a call from a doctor regarding a medical emergency?

Users can opt-in to activate the capability to identify all calls received, including if the caller is not using Viber to call. Existing users (with Viber 19.3.0 or later) can enable Caller ID under ‘Calls and Messages’ within the app’s Settings menu.

With Viber’s Caller ID feature, phone numbers that have been reported by other Viber users as a source of spam will be displayed with a spam alert. Once a call has ended, the user will be provided with post-call actions such as redialing, messaging, saving the contact, or even reporting it as a spammer.

“We are excited to provide this additional layer of protection and awareness to our users,” says Ofir Eyal, CEO of Rakuten Viber. “Caller ID allows us to give users peace of mind; nobody likes receiving spam calls. This is another step we are taking to put more control in the hands of the users.”

The feature is currently available to Android users in select territories, including the Philippines and will be gradually rolled out globally over the coming months.

OFW wins 5M in PLDT Home Rewards grand giveaway promo

One seafarer who has been away from his family for most of the past 12 years—missing Christmases, New Year celebrations, his son’s first steps and birthdays—says he can now be with them full-time, thanks to the PLDT Home Rewards Grand Giveaway Promo’s PHP5 million prize! From the simple desire to earn rewards and discounts from their PLDT Home subscription via the PLDT Home Rewards program, the 36-year-old OFW won the ultimate cash prize in the second year of PLDT Home Reward’s Grand Giveaway promo.

The Grand Giveaway Promo simply requires PLDT Home subscribers to join the PLDT Home Rewards program for free. In addition to the various perks and discounts available from partner merchants, all PLDT Home Home Rewards members are automatically signed up and eligible to win the many raffle prizes of the Grand Giveaway Promo that are up for grabs.

They plan to use part of the prize to pay for their house. “Aside from that we will set aside some of the prize money as savings because we have a four-year-old son, so it’s going toward his schooling. We also plan to use the prize as seed money to start a business,” they said as they collected the check from the PLDT head office in Makati.

A fortunate switch to PLDT Home

The winner’s partner, who works from home for a BPO company, agrees with him on starting a business. She was actually instrumental in their winning because it was she who signed them up to the PLDT Home Rewards program while her huband was away at sea.

“We actually switched to PLDT Home,” she says. “When we were living with my parents, their internet connection was PLDT Home. When we bought our own house, we tried to have it transferred, but at the time, there were few households in the area, and there was no available line yet. So, we used another service provider, pero sobrang mahal. In 2017, we switched back to PLDT Home.”

During the pandemic, her BPO company sent their employees to work from home but with a required minimum internet speed. She then upgraded their plan to PHP1,669, which came with a discount of PHP200.

“We are very happy with the internet speed and the consistency of service, like when they’re doing maintenance, we always get a notification ahead of schedule,” she says. “We also got the FamCam promo so that while he was on the ship, he could monitor our son and see what we’re doing when we’re home. That was really important to us because our son was growing up, and we wanted him to feel close to his dad even when he wasn’t beside us.”

When PLDT Home announced its bigger and better rewards program, she signed them up, not knowing that the simple act of joining and earning Crystals automatically entered them into the PLDT Home Rewards Grand Giveaway raffle promo.

“We’ve never won a raffle in our life,” she says. “I got a notification with a link from PLDT Home last May. At first, we thought it might be one of those scams, but we verified that it came from PLDT Home, and then we got a phone call that changed our lives.”

5-Million PLDT Home Rewards 2022 Grand Giveaway Promo Winner

    A well-deserved rest at home

PHP5-million is an enormous windfall for anyone, but for the 36-year-old OFW, it is a gift that allows him to become a full-time partner and father. Seafaring contracts in the Philippines are usually for a period of several months to a year maximum, and Filipino seafarers often sign back-to back-contracts to ensure that their income is continuous and they’re able to support their families back home, especially when they are working toward goals like a house, car, business or their children’s schooling.

Now, they can enjoy the fruits of his labor and all his sacrifices as an OFW: simply being with his family in a house they bought several years ago. He is now a full-time dad to his son and is right beside him to guide him in his early years and watch him grow up.

“Rest muna sa seafaring, and hopefully, I never have to go back. That’s very possible if we choose the right business to invest in,” he says with relief in his voice, seemingly remembering all those years when he was abroad, lonely and missing his young family.

These days, the couple is always on the lookout for even more benefits of being a loyal PLDT Home subscriber. “We’re looking at the PLDT Home Rewards program more closely and what we can exchange for our points,” she says with a smile.

This new millionaire couple’s advice to people is to switch to PLDT Home because it’s faster, more reliable, and generous to loyal subscribers. “If you’re already a subscriber, sign up for the PLDT Home Rewards. As long as you pay on time, you earn points that you can exchange for rewards,” she says.

PLDT Home Rewards lets you enjoy various perks and benefits, such as vouchers for a wide variety of partner brands and merchants, as well as entry into recurring, all by paying bills and earning Home Rewards Crystals. PLDT Home customers can sign up for the Home Rewards program by visiting the PLDT Home Rewards .

Hyundai Cebu-Talisay breaks ground under Gateway Motors

Hyundai Motor Philippines Inc. (HMPH) has officially broken ground on its upcoming Hyundai Cebu-Talisay dealership, together with Gateway Motors. Last August 11, the city of Talisay welcomed HMPH executives, including president Dong Wook Lee and managing director Cecil Capacete, alongside Gateway Group’s executive vice president Michael Goho, corporate secretary Estrella Goho, and Hyundai brand head Glenn Teves.

Cebu is considered the main hub for commerce, education, tourism, and transportation in the Visayas. It is one of the country’s largest metropolitan areas in which Talisay serves as a residential and trading center.

According to Lee, HMPH is determined to serve both old and new customers in this continuously developing region. “We are very fortunate that the Gateway Group shares the same passion as us when it comes to mobility and the community at large. Cebuanos will soon have even easier access to our sustainable and innovative cars, most especially the back-to-back World Car of The Year winners, the IONIQ 5 and 6. Not only that, we wish to make our presence more felt by existing Hyundai owners who are residing or working at this island through our expert aftersales care and genuine parts and accessories offers,” he says.

Hyundai Cebu-Talisay will be HMPH’s newest addition to its roster of electric vehicle (EV) outlets, which will also carry the Hyundai Global Dealership Space Identity (GDSI) 2.0. This adheres to the brand’s direction towards a more customer-centric approach through various “experience segments” as one enters the showroom to inquire, test drive, or pay a visit for service or repair. The dealership is expected to open its doors by the fourth quarter of 2024.
