    Unplug and Play: Pure electric Volvo C40 and XC40 Recharge models soon to launch in PH

    Volvo Philippines is geared to launch its two new all-electric models on October 4, 2023. The pure electric Volvo C40 Recharge Twin and the XC40 Recharge Twin models are revved up to roll on Philippine roads by the start of the fourth quarter of this year.

    “We are thrilled to introduce two purely electrifying models – the Volvo C40 and the Volvo XC40. These models both carry Volvo Cars’ ambition of becoming a fully electric car company by 2030. We believe it’s time for the Philippine market to discover the benefits of driving a pure electric Volvo car and experience for themselves what sustainable mobility is,” enthused Volvo Philippines president and CEO Atty. Albert Arcilla.

    Double the Fun

    Dubbed the “twins,” the pure electric Volvo C40 Recharge and XC40 Recharge share similarities that highlight the Volvo DNA running in their electric veins. 

    Both the C40 Recharge Twin and XC40 Recharge Twin share identical dimensions as they share the same platform. At the core, the twins also run on twin motors with 408 horsepower and 660Nm of torque. Both are all-wheel drive variants that deliver impressive range improvements. They sport an in-house developed 183kW permanent magnet e-motor on the rear axle and a new 117kW asynchronous electric motor on the front axle.

    This configuration, paired with an 82kWh battery pack and overall efficiency improvements in battery cooling, means the XC40 Recharge Twin Motor AWD can now drive up to 537 kilometers on a single charge (WLTP). The range of the C40 Recharge Twin Motor AWD has improved up to 549 kilometers from 447 kilometers (WLTP) when it was first launched globally.

    Globe partners with bolttech to launch Gadget Xchange for hassle-free gadget switching

    Google PH reinforces commitment to boosting MSMEs with the Digital Export Enablement Programme (DEEP)

    Local micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) will get the opportunity to modernize and perform better with the launch of the Digital Export Enablement Programme (DEEP), a training program that upskills entrepreneurs on how to maximize Google tools for their businesses.

    Google Philippines partnered with the Department of Trade Industry, International Trade Centre (ITC), and the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) to make DEEP happen. In the free two-day workshop, participating entrepreneurs learned how to properly use Google’s Business Profile feature, as well as other important digital export-relevant skills and tools.

    By combining the resources and expertise of all three organizations, DEEP aims to facilitate a unique cross-border entrepreneurial journey for small businesses from Southeast Asia.     917Ventures’ PetPal targets expands access to essential pet care for Filipinos

    917Ventures, the largest corporate venture builder in the Philippines, created PetPal to address the market gap in veterinary services. Launched as a vet teleconsultation service, it has recently started to offer at-home grooming services, home vet visits, lab tests, and vaccinations. It also plans to launch an online pharmacy and marketplace for other pet-related goods, supplies, and other services. Their PetPal Club subscription service provides users unlimited teleconsultations for up to two pets annually, along with discounts on pet services. A mobile app version is expected to launch later this year.

    The Philippines has seen a significant increase in pet ownership, with 79% of the population now owning a pet, one of the highest percentages in Asia. With the surge in pet ownership, many struggle to find affordable, convenient veterinary care options for their beloved animals, with just one vet available for every 10,000 pet owners in the country. 

    PetPal has evolved from being a veterinary teleconsultation service into one that offers home vet visits, lab tests, vaccinations, and at-home grooming services.

    Carlo Flordeliza, a senior venture builder at 917Ventures, conceived the idea of PetPal after recognizing a gaping need for a comprehensive online pet care platform.     Fujifilm launches new flagship medium format camera FUJIFILM GFX100 II and lenses

    FUJIFILM announced the launch of the FUJIFILM GFX100 II medium format camera, large-aperture prime lens GF55mmF1.7 R WR and tilt-shift lenses GF30mmF5.6 T/S and GF110mmF5.6 T/S Macro.

    GFX100 II

    The GFX100 II camera features a large format sensor that enhances image quality with rich tonal reproduction and sharp three-dimensional details. It introduces advanced features like AI-based subject detection autofocus and a high-speed image processing engine, boosting burst shooting performance from 5.0 to 8.0 frames per second. This versatility caters to various photography genres, from fashion and commercial to sports and news photography.

    Keychain microscope giving easy access to microbiology wins national James Dyson Award

    This year’s Philippine national James Dyson Award winner attempts to solve the problem of limited access to STEM resources, by creating Make-roscope, an affordable and portable keychain that converts any smartphone or tablet into a microscope, giving students an easy access to the microscopic world. 

    During the pandemic, Jeremy De Leon was a fresh graduate of Manufacturing Engineering from Mapua University who witnessed how challenging it was for students and teachers to learn and teach biology and life sciences because the school labs were closed. He thought of a special tool that could help teachers and students study science together, even if they could not be in the same classroom. 

    The Invention 

    De Leon invented the Make-roscope which uses just one special lens to make things appear up to 400 times larger using a smartphone. The exterior of the Make-roscope is made of food-grade silicone, which is waterproof, and can be used almost perpetually. Instead of using gears like a machine, the Make-roscope has flexible arms which the user can bend to make things look clearer. Currently, over 3,000 Filipino students and teachers are using the Make-roscope.

    De Leon says: “Usually, in a school laboratory, a microscope is shared by around 10 students. With Make-roscope, it’s possible to have one for each student. The child has the freedom to explore and to be curious both inside and outside the classroom.”

    Winning the national leg of the James Dyson Award will inject PhP 330,000 into De Leon’s project which he intends to use for further product development. Aside from the actual Make-roscope, De Leon introduced an all-in-one laboratory kit which also includes specimen slides and accessories, such as pipettes, tweezers, and tubes, for users to easily obtain samples. 

    De Leon says: “Because of the James Dyson Award, we will expand our goal of reaching not just Filipino students, but every student in the world, so they will be engaged in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, and we will have more researchers, scientists, engineers, innovators, and especially change makers.”

    The Make-roscope will progress to the international stage of the James Dyson Award. The international top 20 shortlist will be announced on 18th October, and the international winners on 15th November.

    Problem: Worldwide, 3,000 to 5,000 babies are diagnosed with Down Syndrome (DS) every day. People with DS experience motor and cognitive challenges along with a myriad of health risks, including diabetes.

    Solution: SugarBuddy is a wearable diabetes-monitoring aid that guides the user through animated steps, LED lights, & verbal instructions from their caregiver. It aims to bridge the inclusivity gap between the current processes and the challenges people with Down Syndrome face.

    James Dyson Award

    The James Dyson Award forms part of a wider commitment by Sir James Dyson, to demonstrate the power of engineers to change the world. The Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology, the James Dyson Foundation, and James Dyson Award encourage aspiring engineers to apply their knowledge and discover new ways to improve lives through technology. To date, James Dyson has contributed over £140m to boundary-breaking concepts in education and other charitable causes. The James Dyson Award has supported over 300 inventions with prize money and is run by the James Dyson Foundation, an engineering education charity funded by Dyson profits.

    Cisco PH and Mapúa University join forces to pilot the country’s first-ever digital classrooms 

    Mapúa University, one of the top engineering and technological schools in the Philippines, and Cisco have agreed to collaborate to create the Philippines’ first-ever digital university. As part of the collaboration, Cisco will deploy state-of-the-art technology to transform the university’s traditional classrooms to optimize hybrid learning.     The first-ever e:HEV full hybrid system in the All-New CR-V

    The e:HEV technology in the All-New Honda CR-V combines all of Honda’s gasoline engine and electrification technologies with an array of advanced technologies to achieve exceptionally low fuel consumption and a new level of driving pleasure.

    The system is a powerful combination of two electric motors, the Traction Motor and the Generator Motor. Those are then mated to a new four-cylinder, 2.0-liter Direct Injection Atkinson Cycle engine. The engine provides 148PS and 183Nm of torque, and the electric motors put out 184PS and 335Nm of torque. While the motor operates throughout the low- to high-speed range, e:HEV relies on the gasoline engine alone for high-speed cruising. The e:HEV achieves a unique combination of environmental performance and driving pleasure that could not be achieved with an engine-only system.

    The e:HEV full hybrid system can intelligently switch operating modes to suit various driving situations between three modes. These are EV Drive Mode which lets the vehicle run solely on battery power, Hybrid Drive mode which shifts power between the electric motor and the engine, and Engine Drive Mode. The ability to run on individual power modes is the main benefit of a full hybrid electric system, delivering true fuel economy gains.     Another first in the All-New Honda CR-V for the Philippine market is a turbocharged gas engine. Available in the 1.5 V Turbo CVT and 1.5 VX Turbo CVT AWD, it uses the 1.5-liter Direct Injection DOHC VTEC engine that blends power and economy.
