Hitachi introduces new Video Management Platform models, eyes video security market

Hitachi Insight Group introduced three new Video Management Platform (VMP) models aimed at driving the company towards the video security and monitoring market.

The VMP models make use of virtual computing and storage which allows for increased scalability of systems, with users being able to allocate resources wherever and whenever needed.

Hitachi looks at these highly scalable VMP models with better information storage and security as a way for companies that rely on traditional physical video security and monitoring systems to transition to a system that can capitalize on cloud and IoT technology.

“Video monitoring and security are key areas where digitalization can offer profound benefits. However, the migration to digital video solutions has been slow, due in large part to the limitations of existing products and a reliance on legacy technologies and analog video formats. With its Video Management Platform, Hitachi is addressing a major gap in the video compute and storage market that has prevented physical security solutions from evolving to fully embrace digital transformation and IoT,” said Pierre Bourgeix, vice president of SecureState, a consulting firm.

Hitachi Insight Group also announces its collaboration with Milestone Systems and OnSSI in providing consumers with better video management software (VMS) solutions, with the platform being compatible with Milestone System’s XProtect and OnSSI’s Ocularis 5.

Reinier Tuinzing, Milestone Systems’ strategic alliances manager for the Americas commented, “Milestone’s robust open IP video management software together with the simplicity and reliability of Hitachi’s Video Management Platform will help to pave the way for smarter, safer cities, industries and businesses of the future.”

The new platform configurations, the VMP 150, 500, and 1000, allow broader applications for enterprise security, industrial efficiency, and workplace and traffic safety and can support medium to large enterprise security requirements from 150 to more than 10,000 cameras

With the new platform models, the company looks to gain a better footing in the the six billion-dollar market for video security and monitoring.

DDoS attacks in Asia-Pacific region increased by 43%

According to IPC (IP Converge Data Services, Inc.), the country’s pioneer DDoS Mitigation service provider, Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks increased 43% percent to 34,000 attacks in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region, citing a report by its partner Nexusguard, global leader in DDoS mitigation.

The study was conducted throughout the second quarter of this year and revealed an 83% increase in attacks worldwide. Although the APAC region only saw an increase a bit over half of the global total, attack durations were longer compared to global incidents. Nexusguard says that this is most likely due to many attack tools with set duration periods.

The largest increase was seen in Hong Kong, where attacks rose an astonishing 57%. China, which saw a 50% increase in attacks, is the number one target in the region. According to the report, over the course of a month a Chinese website was attacked 41 times.

The Philippines on the other hand is one of the countries who experienced the least DDoS attacks, together with Indonesia and Malaysia.

Despite this, IPC strongly recommends that businesses be prepared by updating and strengthening their security systems. “The currently low numbers of the Philippines should not be taken as a signal to be complacent. Instead, the huge increase of DDoS attacks in the region and the world should be a wake-up call to businesses as we become more and more digitally active,” said Niño Valmonte, Director for Product Management & Marketing of IPC.

The report also revealed an alarming increase in public attacks, such as on the popular augmented reality video game Pokémon Go, which had a limited release in July. Nexusguard confirms that a group called “Poodle Corp.” is responsible for these attacks and they expect more attacks from them to increase their visibility and position themselves as DDoS-for-hire services.

In terms of method, attacks on the Network Time Protocol (NTP) dominated 90% of the attack types in the region, a stark contrast from the global distribution which experienced only 46% of this type of attack. The NTP is a protocol used for clock synchronization that is used by machines connected to the Internet to set their clocks accurately. Once attacked, hackers can gain access to hundreds of computers, depending on how many the NTP has interacted with. The quarter also saw the increased weaponization of ransomware within DDoS tools as a new “fad” for propagating home infections.

“We expect the upward trend in the frequency of attacks to continue this year, especially with more attention to the Summer Olympics and political dispute in the APAC region,” said Terrence Gareau, chief scientist at Nexusguard. “And as Pokémon Go gradually launches across the Asian market, Nexusguard analysts expect attack groups will launch more public attacks. This activity increases visibility and positioning as DDoS-for-hire services, the popularity of which we noted from the consistent time durations this quarter.”

“Almost every company is going digital these days and the more that this trend continues, the more cybercriminals will try to access your network. Once your company becomes digital, it is imperative to implement highly effective data security measures,” added Valmonte.

The solution to counter these attacks is a sound DDoS mitigation strategy. IPC is the first and only DDoS Mitigation service provider in the Philippines with round the clock DDoS attack monitoring and in-country attack mitigation for local enterprises and institutions. Branded as “inCAST” or In-Country Attack Scrubbing Tactics, the facility uses state-of-the-art equipment, manned by DDoS mitigation specialists so customers are assured of protection from looming attacks.

GrabJobs seeks to make job hunting easier for Filipinos

Singapore-based GrabJobs has soft launched locally, providing another platform for Filipino employers and job seekers to easily and conveniently connect. It is an app focused primarily on serving the retail, service, and blue collar industries, occupying a niche generally underserved by white collar-focused platforms.

Debuting earlier this year in Singapore, GrabJobs currently has over 25,000 downloads and big names in its client list, including Foodpanda, Brotzeit, H&M, Club21, and Holiday Inn.

“Having worked with several establishments in the food and beverage (F&B) industry in Singapore, we’ve noticed one challenge that we constantly faced—the unreliability and inconsistency around staffing,” shared GrabJobs CEO and co-founder Emmanuel Crouy. “GrabJobs was created in response to staffing issues faced by employers in F&B, retail, hospitality, events, logistics, warehousing, and BPOs, among others.”

In order to adapt and expand faster in the country, GrabJobs has partnered with startup accelerator and collaborative ecosystem WeCube Inc. “We wanted to get GrabJobs to the Philipines first and foremost, primarily because we know there’s an ever-growing demand here,” explained Mark Melo, GrabJobs CCO and co-founder. “We understand how difficult it is for employers to find workers that could perfectly suit their needs, and that goes the same for job seekers who need to find a stable job, may it be part-time or full-time.”

Some of GrabJobs features include easier job broadcasting, push notifications, candidate search and filter, and employer-job hunter chat right on the app. Job seekers can also apply to job posts by just pressing a button.

Locally, GrabJobs already has 1,000 registered job hunters on its app, as well as large employers such as SM Retail, Metro Retail, The Peninsula Manila, and Jollibee.

For more information, visit grabjobs.co or download the app at the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

Starmobile launches UP sense smartphone with fingerprint sensor

True to its mission to make the latest technological innovations accessible for Filipinos, Philippine tech brand Starmobile recently introduced its first fingerprint sensor-enabled smartphone, the Starmobile UP Sense.

“The UP Sense lets you use the most secure tool that you have in your possession 24/7 to lock your device and control access to your apps and private files—your very own fingerprint,” said Starmobile Product Development Head Michael Chen. “We aim to give you peace of mind that only you will have access to your smartphone’s content.”

Why would you want to have a smartphone with fingerprint sensor? Here are some of the benefits.

    • Security: In case something happens and you lose your smartphone – during your commute, while you are in a public place, or because you were preoccupied with other concerns – whoever picks up your device won’t get to view or tamper with your personal social media accounts, images, and videos.
    • Privacy: Sometimes, even those nearest and dearest to us could get tempted to play with our smartphones while we are not looking, driven by either curiosity or a plan to prank us. Having a fingerprint sensor will make it impossible for them to play with your device without your knowledge.
    • Convenience: Various studies have shown that an average smartphone user checks his or her device anywhere from 85 to 150 times in one day. Having to input pass codes each time can get tiring and confusing, especially for more senior users. Smartphones with fingerprint sensors solve this problem and make it hassle-free for these users to keep their devices protected.

The dual-SIM Android 6.0 Marshmallow UP Sense comes packed with a quad core CPU that can handle a wide array of games and multimedia, an 8MP rear camera with flash, a 2500 mAh battery that can provide up to 12.5 hours talk time or 13 days standby time, and expandable storage of up to 32GB. All these are within a slim and premium-looking body with a beautiful HD screen that looks great from any angle.

The Starmobile UP Sense will be available in Starmobile concept stores, kiosks, and authorized resellers nationwide next week at just P4,290.

Vision Petron, Cinemalaya support young Filipino film-makers

    0

Celebrating its first collaboration, Petron and Cinemalaya Institute proudly awarded certificates to the students at a culminating activity held at the Cultural Center of the Philippines last July 2, 2016.

For the past 16 years, Petron has supported the development of young Filipino artists through its Vision Petron National Student Art Competition. Previous winners of Vision Petron’s video-making category who passed initial screening were given scholarships to further hone their skills by participating in the Cinemalaya Insititute’s six-week courses on various aspects of film production.

Vyankka Balasabas, a student from the University of Mindanao and the first Vision Petron Hall of Famer for Video-Making (Grand Prize Winner, 2014 & 2015), feels very lucky to have been chosen to be part of the program, expressing her gratitude to Petron for providing her with the opportunity to meet people who have become her mentors. She also noted that she was able to broaden her knowledge in screenwriting. She participated in the Feature-Length Screenplay course conducted by Sophia Wellington, a screenwriting teacher at many film schools including the London Film School and London Film Academy.

Anne Malazarte, from the University of San Agustin and also a 2015 Vision Petron grand prize awardee, joined the Film Editing course. She describes her participation as a “humbling experience” with many challenges, particularly as many of her classmates were already professional editors. This experience has made her even more determined to do her best and continue learning. She studied under Jon Hammond, a faculty member of various international film schools such as the UK National Film and Television School, London Film School, and London Film Academy.

Meanwhile, 2013 Vision Petron grand prize winner Balaram Ochangco, a student from the University of Santo Tomas, took the Basic Filmmaking Course under Carlos Siguion-Reyna, a renowned film director and head faculty at the New York University Tisch film program in Singapore.

This is the second year that Cinemalaya Institute, which provides education, training, and accreditation of practitioners in key aspects of film production, has offered this intensive program over a 6-week period.

KTM opens showroom in Bonifacio Global City

Motorcycle manufacturer KTM, through Ayala Automotive, opened its showroom in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig yesterday September 9.

The event was part of Ayala Automotive’s expansion of KTM’s reach in the Philippine motorcycle market, opening up more stores within the year and announcing the manufacture of KTM motorcycles locally by 2017.

Ayala Corporation and KTM regional executives were present at the event, including Ayala Corporation’s Chairman and CEO Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala and his brother, President and COO Fernando Zobel de Ayala.

As part of the opening festivities at the newly-opened branch, KTM brought in the award-winning, company-supported stunt rider Rok Bagoros from Slovenia to entertain the crowd with extreme stunts.

At the launch party, Ayala Corporation Industrial President and CEO Arthur Tan confirmed the company’s planned opening of KTM motorcycle production in the Philippines in the first quarter of next year: “By January next year, you’ll get an opportunity to ride the exact same bikes that you can get here, but built in the Philippines.”

The opening of a KTM-manufacturing facility in the country is part of Ayala Corporation’s intent to expand its automotive business from just dealership to including manufacturing.

“The clear reason is to have passion and purpose. The passion and the purpose comes together because we found a partner—a true partner—who believed that we can actually change the fate of a country that then looks beyond a service-backed industry and into a manufacture-based industry, and believing that the Philippines and all the capabilities that is inside the country is enough to be able to be competitive on a global scale,” Tan said in his speech to the guests.
