Intel Security launches new 2017 consumer security line-up

    0

California-based security software giant Intel Security announced its new 2017 consumer suite last October 5, including next-generation features to increase effectiveness and efficiency.

At the center of Intel Security’s new lineup is the McAfee next generation anti-malware engine which offloads data analysis to the cloud.

The engine includes a malware unmasking system that uses behavioral analytics and machine learning to identify and block malware without the need for human intervention, promising better detection and prevention.

Intel also added improvements to the True Key feature to the McAfee suite which allows multi-factor authentication to log into websites using functions like fingerprint scanning and facial recognition.

The Intel Security consumer services improved upon their protection capabilities on all devices from Windows to Mac as well as from smartphone to tablet.

John Giamatteo, Intel Security Corporate Vice President and General Manager, attributed the improvements to the increasing level of connectivity, with consumers owning more and more devices which increases vulnerability to threats.

“We know our customers need solutions that protect their digital lives, particularly as connectivity continues to rise and threats continue to evolve. We’re dedicated to delivering innovative products designed to protect all manner of connected devices and the people who use them,” he said.

The new lineup scored a perfect 100% detection result in the July 2016 AV Comparatives independent test.

According to a recent threat report by McAfee labs, new ransomware has increased by 120 percent since the first quarter of last year with 4.7 billion records stolen since 2013.

Intel Security was previously known as McAfee until Intel announced the company name change four years after the company bought out McAfee in 2010.

    Quick Look: Google Pixel

Google’s hot new venture into hardware is the Google Pixel: the first smartphone with the Google Assistant built in.

The five-inch screen base Pixel version boasts a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chip with four cores. The chip also has X12 LTE support which is faster than the X10 LTE supported by the 810 chip.

Graphics-wise, the phone has a powerful Adreno 530 GPU for its 16 million-color AMOLED display with 1080p resolution.

One of Google’s main selling points for the phone is its 12.3-megapixel camera which the company says is the “highest rated smartphone camera” by DxOMark which can take great pictures at any lighting condition. The front-facing camera on the other hand is eight megapixels with an f/2.4 aperture.

The Pixel has four GB of RAM and has storage options of either 32 GB or a massive 128 GB.

The phone runs the latest version of Nougat and is compatible with Daydream VR. And did we mention it has a 3.5mm jack?

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 replacement catches fire; plane evacuated

Passengers of Southwest Airlines flight 994 from Louisville, Kentucky bound for Baltimore, Maryland were evacuated after a Galaxy Note 7 caught fire in the plane’s cabin.

Brian Green, owner of the phone, told The Verge‘s Jordan Golson that the unit was already a replacement under Samsung’s Note 7 recall program.

The phone, according to Green, was powered down and placed in his pocket as per the cabin crew’s request when it began emitting a “thick green grey-green angry smoke.”

Green placed the smoking phone on the cabin floor, and the crew and passengers were evacuated. No injuries were reported.

The phone had burnt through the carpet and damaged the plane’s subfloor.

The phone is now in possession of the Louisville Fire Department’s arson unit for investigation.

Only a few days ago, a GTA Mod was released that poked fun at Samsung’s ongoing Note 7 problem, turning sticky bombs into exploding Note 7s.

3C Wireless introduces ‘Secure Network’ wireless M2M solution to the Philippines

3C Enterprise Wireless Pty. Ltd. (3C Wireless) introduced its 3C Secure Network (3C SN) financial technology solution to the Philippines at a press lunch held in Makati, October 5.

The 3C SN is a scalable machine-to-machine (M2M) solution that offers a wireless connection between bank branches and automated teller machines (ATMs), promising speed, reliability, accessibility and network security.

With a wireless connection as opposed to traditional leased line ATM connections, 3C Wireless looks at the application of the technology to more remote parts of the country where cellular network infrastructure is more reliable than its wired counterpart.

“Wherever there is wireless (connection), you can have banking. That’s a key,” said Dr. Ted Marr, Executive Vice President for 3C Wireless.

The ATM connects privately to the bank’s network via a built-in modem which communicates through special corporate connections that are specific to each bank system and inaccessible to the public.

The modem uses a dual telecommunications provider fail-over system with a primary network connection based on signal strength and a backup network should the primary connection fail, allowing ATMs to be online virtually all the time.

Working with omni-channel solutions provider NCR Corporation, the 3C SN is advantageous over traditional leased line systems in terms of security due to its private connection independent of the signal that the public uses for mobile communication, and an industry-standard 128-bit IPsec (internet protocol security) encryption which is near-impossible to crack.

“Security’s very important obviously because we’re dealing with money, and we want to make those transactions as secure as possible so we work with people like NCR, the ATM manufacturers to better secure those transactions as they go over the networks,” said 3C Wireless Chief Technology Officer Robert Huddlestone.

3C Wireless will also provide real-time monitoring of the ATMs as well as full-time vendor support for the networks in case of any issue.

On average, traditional leased line ATMs have a 94 to 96 percent up time translating to 800 to 900 minutes of downtime a year. 3C Wireless promises a 99.6 percent up time, giving ATMs considerably less time offline.

3C Wireless is currently in talks with four banks and reaching out to seven more, conducting location feasibility tests in areas where wired ATM operations are problematic including places in Mindanao, Visayas, and Southern Luzon.

According to the 3C Wireless execs, the network test results in such areas have been generally positive. Setting up the infrastructure for the wireless system will take one to one and a half months while the consequent rollout of the machines will be instantaneous.

Smart collaborates with International Alert Philippines to hack for peace

    0

Smart Communications (Smart), through its developer network, Smart DevNet, teamed up with International Alert Philippines (IAP) to hold the very first #PeaceHack aimed to help mitigate the effects of conflict in the Philippines through technology.

The recently concluded peace hackathon gathered a total of 22 teams, each armed with ideas on how to help understand and prevent conflict which are to be executed through apps. Out of the 22, only six teams were able to advance to the final round–a pitching session before representatives from IAP, DevCon, Web Geek Philippines, and the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

“There will be a great difference if we will be able to understand carefully and help prevent the root cause of societal issues. We believe that through the help of technology, we will be able to assess and monitor issues as soon as they arise, to prevent them from progressing into full-blown conflicts,” said Paul Pajo of Smart DevNet.

“We see technology as a tool in peace-building. Technology can help address or highlight issues that provoke conflict. Technology can also create the conditions for peace for thrive,” said Nikki Philline de la Rosa of IAP.

After the two-day peace hack, Hubert Bryan Ursua emerged as the first-prize winner with Peace Talk, a text messaging-based chatbot for people affected by disasters or conflicts. Meanwhile, Michael Gerard Galon bagged second prize with PHOM or Ph Opinion Mining, an app which provides information and sentiment about issues and events in the Philippines, specifically for Filipinos living abroad. The third prize went to Regine Reyes and Renate Gouveia for SAAN or Social Action Advocacy Network, an app for providing feedback on government services and enabling like-minded individuals to jointly push a particular cause.

The winners received trophies and cash prizes totalling PHP 100,000.

World Robotics Report 2016 announces collaborative robots as market driver

The World Robotics Report 2016, recently released by the International Federation of Robotics (IFR) forecasts that compact, user-friendly collaborative robots will become a key driver in the automation market. The report predicts the worldwide annual sales of industrial robots to increase by at least 13 percent on average per year from 2017 to 2019. Human-robot collaboration will have a “breakthrough” in this period, enabling robots and humans to work safely side-by-side without any fences, while increasing production efficiency and quality.

“As the market leader of the cobot industry, Universal Robots welcomes the report which confirms the validity of our mission: lowering barriers and enabling automation in areas previously considered too complex or costly,” said Chief Commercial Officer of Universal Robots, Daniel Friis.

“Our installed base of more than 10,000 cobots worldwide illustrates the dramatic growth potential of this game-changing automation technology. We enable small and medium-sized enterprises to optimize their competitiveness on the global stage with an industry-leading payback period.”

Industries predicted by IFR to adopt cobots at an increasing rate include automotive, the plastics industry, electronics assembly, and the machine tool industry. These are all key sectors in Southeast Asia, and where Universal Robots is seeing strong traction.

“UR robots are now increasingly deployed on the auto assembly line, working hand-in-hand with employees, by relieving them of ergonomically unfavorable tasks. We have recent case studies documenting how cobots quadrupled injection molding production, and how our new UR3 table-top robot is now a sought-after automation tool for light assembly, such as circuit board handling,” said Friis.

In Asia, strong, continued robot growth is forecasted by IFR, with the recent report suggesting a rise of 18 percent in robot supplies this year, while installations are expected to rise by 15 percent. China is predicted to remain the main driver of robot growth, expanding its dominance with almost 40 percent of the global robot supply being installed in China by 2019.

“Asia is a strong focus area for Universal Robots. We opened a Shanghai subsidiary in 2013 and are constantly expanding our distributor network in the regions where customers are increasingly using our cobots to optimize product quality and automate repetitive tasks that many manufacturers have difficulty staffing with manual labor,” said Friis.

According to Friis, the demand for consumer goods across global markets is pushing manufacturers to produce innovative, high-quality products more quickly, consistently, and sustainably around the world.

“To support the growing demand for flexible cobot solutions, Universal Robots recently launched Universal Robots+, an online showroom for end-effectors, software, peripherals, and accessories from the UR ecosystem of 3rd-party developers that are optimized to work flawlessly with UR robots. This allows UR’s integrators, distributors, and customers to hit the ground running when completing their next UR robot installation,” said Friis.

Complementing Universal Robots+ is the new UR Academy, which includes free e-learning modules available to all that make up the basic programming training for UR robots. This includes adding end-effectors, connecting I/Os for communication with external devices, and setting up safety zones. Universal Robots expects the initiative to help support Industry 4.0.

“It’s unprecedented in the industry to provide hands-on interactive teaching modules available for free with no licensing required. The Academy offers an instrumental tool in helping us educate the market on how our technology can address key business challenges. As Southeast Asia gears up to be the world’s manufacturing hub, educating future operators and programmers now to bridge this gap becomes even more important,” said Friis.

Citi Officially Launches Voice Biometrics Authentication in PH

    0

Citi, one of the world’s leading banks, has just officially introduced a ground-breaking technology developed to provide its Filipino clients a more secure and convenient phone banking experience.

Taking pride in its many industry-first innovations such as international ATM cards, 24-hour customer service, mobile banking solutions, among others, Citi marks another milestone by being the first bank to roll out voice biometrics authentication in phone banking.

With this technology integrated into Citi’s phone banking system, the time spent on identification is significantly cut down as the need to provide personal information and answer security questions each time you call to transact is eliminated.  Security is also further enhanced as the voice biometrics authentication capability identifies customers through their voice print, which is as unique as a person’s fingerprint preventing fraud and identity theft.

Citi clients can opt to enrol by recording their voices, which the bank will use to generate and store their voice prints for matching subsequent calls to Citibank. Each voice print will be uniquely tagged and cannot be reverse-engineered once stored.  Once enrolled, a client’s identity is automatically verified in 15 seconds or less as they freely explain their reason for calling.

Prior to its Philippine roll out, the service has already been implemented in Taiwan, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Malaysia. Citi hopes to have at least a million of its customers across the region enrolled in the service in the next 12 months. Meanwhile, in the country, the bank targets 100-percent of its phone banking clients to actively use voice biometrics authentication by the end of 2016.

Citi account holders can now enrol in Voice Biometrics by calling 995-9999. For more information, log on to www.citigroup.com, follow them on Twitter @Citi and Facebook www.facebook.com/citi, or visit www.youtube.com/citi.

    Bridgestone Corporate “Seed” Print Campaign

A tire company sows the seeds of environmental preservation.

From the way Bridgestone makes their tires, to the way they perform on the road, the effect on the environment is part of the overall equation.

    Performance for a greener world.

Bridgestone tire technology begins with the end in mind. The less fuel a vehicle requires to travel a certain distance, the less emissions it releases, the less impact it has on the environment. With this underlying motivation, Bridgestone tires are designed to make any vehicle more fuel efficient.

Low Rolling Resistance Technology is what makes Bridgestone tires fuel efficient. The less energy a tire requires to roll, the less fuel a vehicle uses. Lowered rolling resistance is the key result of the materials, design, and technology that goes into Bridgestone tires. The advanced rubber compounds used, the structural design of the tire sections, even the tread patterns are all directed to lower rolling resistance, making any vehicle riding on Bridgestone tires travel more on less fuel, which then translates to a reduced impact on the environment.

Tire production with the environment in mind.

Bridgestone tire production is continually being optimized for a cleaner and greener world. Environmental consciousness is apparent in Bridgestone’s production process. There is a continuous effort to decrease the amount of natural resources required for its products and the use of recycled rubber in its line of tires is an increasing practice. Bridgestone also continues to decrease the amount of waste that the manufacturing process generates.

    A commitment to communities.

Bridgestone’s commitment to the environment goes beyond the performance and production of tires. As a global brand that is present in many countries, Bridgestone invests time and effort into preserving local environments and enriching communities.

Here in the Philippines and throughout the world, Bridgestone has been spearheading environment and community building activities such as tree planting drives and coastal clean-up programs. The people behind Bridgestone, as representatives of the company and as concerned individuals, are actively involved in these programs.

As the environment has become a necessary concern of each individual and every organization in this evolving world, Bridgestone and its people are as serious as ever about their efforts to help protect and preserve the planet. In many aspects, the global tire leader is constantly planting the seeds for a greener world.
