Epson sees continued growth in SEA, expands reach in business segment

Japanese company Epson, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of printers and other electronic devices, announced September 23 in Manila its plans to strengthen its foothold in the Southeast Asian business segment through the release of new product innovations.

With a continued upswing in growth over the past five years in the region, Epson plans to release new products and improvements to existing lines to address the growing demand in the business sector, focusing on robotics, inkjet, visual communication and wearable tech.

As a leader in Selective Compliance Articulated Robot Arms (SCARA), the company has improved upon the design of the robotic arms, being able to handle intricate and precise tasks.

The company expects a 150 percent growth within the current fiscal year for SCARA driven by a strong demand in the Southeast Asian region.

As Epson’s primary product, inkjet printers have seen a 17 percent regional growth for its business printers , and a six percent growth for industrial printers which is projected to reach 13 percent by the end of the fiscal year.

With this, Epson is planning on launching PaperLab, the first ever in-office paper recycling system that uses a dry process. PaperLab will work together with Epson’s compact inkjet printers, enabling the reuse of paper and removing the need to store and transport paper waste.

The company reports a 23 percent regional market share with a large demand for its 3LCD projectors. Epson will be releasing new models of its 3LCD and high-brightness laser projectors later this year.

Also at the end of the year, Epson is launching its new Moverio BT-300 smart glasses. Its OLED design reduces energy consumption and product weight while improving overall response time.

“Epson will continue to leverage our core technologies to create new innovations that will meet new needs across our focus segments, to bring new value to our customers through precision and smart technologies, and that will reduce impact to the environment,” Epson Singapore managing director Toshimitsu Tanaka said.

Epson expects a double-digit growth throughout the middle towards the end of the 2016 fiscal year with its new technological innovations driving the company’s ambitions to expand its reach in the business segment.

The company has experienced a nine percent revenue growth average across nations in the Southeast Asian region in the previous fiscal year with current trends projecting a similar if not increased growth for this year.

    BlackBerry to stop manufacturing smartphones

Giants eventually fall one way or another. After years of trying to keep its head above water, BlackBerry will succumb to the depths of history as it announced its plans to officially cease its smartphone design and manufacturing business.

In a press release, BlackBerry CEO John Chen said, “The company plans to end all internal hardware development and will outsource that function to partners. This allows us to reduce capital requirements and enhance return on invested capital.”

The statement does keep the door slightly ajar for the brand’s smartphone marque. Instead of having an in-house department, BlackBerry will outsource the production of its smartphones to third-party manufacturers. This essentially means that all BlackBerry smartphones from here on out will be rebrands.

In light of this news, BlackBerry will focus on developing mobility solutions software, embracing its status as one of the world’s leading enterprise software security providers.

“We are reaching an inflection point with our strategy. Our financial foundation is strong, and our pivot to software is taking hold,” explained Chen. “In Q2, we more than doubled our software revenue year over year and delivered the highest gross margin in the company’s history.”

Samsung warns US customers washing machines may explode

Still reeling from the Note 7 battery issue, Korean electronics conglomerate Samsung warns its US customers that their top-loading washing machines may also explode.

In an official statement made by Samsung, top-loading washing machines manufactured between March 2011 and April 2016 may have defective parts that will cause abnormal vibrations in the cycle and a chance for bits of the washer tub to separate and fly out causing injury or property damage.

Samsung warns people who purchased top-loading washing machines between those dates to use the delicate cycle when washing “bedding, bulky, or water-resistant items” as no complaints have been raised when using this setting.

No specific models have been identified by Samsung to be defective, but created a link so customers could check their washing machines’ serial numbers to see if the products are defective.

No issues have been reported for front-loading washing machines.

    Review: Oppo F1s—unrivaled selfie game

Smartphone front cameras have been getting better and better the past few years, to the point that they’re almost as good as the rear shooter. Almost. The new Oppo F1s crosses that line with a front-camera that’s much better than the rear one. But is it all just for show? Find out below.

    Specifications:

    • Processor: Octa-core MediaTek 6755 processor @ 1.5 GHz
    • GPU: Mali-T860 MP2
    • RAM: 3 GB RAM
    • Memory: 32 GB internal storage, microSD expandable up to 128 GB
    • Display: 5.5 inch IPS HD display protected with 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass 4
    • Cameras: 13 MP f/2.2 with Phase Detection Autofocus and LED flash rear; 16 MP f/2.0 front
    • Battery: 3075 mAh
    • Operating System: ColorOS 3.0, based on Android 5.1
    • Connections: dual nanoSIM; 4G LTE; WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/; Bluetooth 4.0; GPS; microUSB
    • Dimensions: 154.5 x 76 x 7.38 mm; 160 g
    • Colors: Gold and rose gold
    • Others: Fingerprint reader

    Design: 4.5/5

They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and in this case, the iPhone should be blushing all over. At first glance, the Oppo F1s looks like Apple’s mainstay device especially when it’s viewed from the back. The matte-finished rear sports two thin metallic bands at the forehead and the chin, and the camera array is located on the upper left side. If it wasn’t for the glaring Oppo marque, you’d have a hard time telling the two devices apart.

Flip the phone over and you’ll be greeted by the 5.5 inch HD IPS screen protected top to bottom by 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass 4. The selfie camera, call speaker, LED notification light, and proximity and light sensors occupy the top, while the physical home button with built-in fingerprint sensor, and capacitive back and recent apps button are at the bottom. The latter two also light up when pressed.

The phone may be big, but thanks to the chamfered edges, it’s still easy to wield. At the bottom edge are dual CNC-drilled speakers, primary microphone, microUSB port, and 3.5mm jack; the right side has the power button and the microSD/SIM tray; volume rockers are placed on the left edge; and the top has a secondary microphone.

Don’t get me wrong, though. The Oppo F1s looks really good and feels premium in the hand thanks to its glass and metal unibody build. Our review unit came in a sexy rose gold finish, though a regular gold variant is also available.

    Hardware: 4/5

Under the hood is an octa-core MediaTek 6755 processor paired with a Mali-T860 MP2 GPU, 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of expandable storage, and a 3075 mAh battery. It boasts dual SIM connectivity, having a triple slot tray that holds two nanoSIMs with the microSD card getting its own space. Each SIM slot has 4G LTE capability, while Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, and GPS roundup its other connectivity options.

The Oppo F1s is marketed as a selfie expert’s phone and it struts the necessary hardware to backup that claim. The front snapper is a 16 MP f/2.0 affair with a 1/3.1 inch image sensor—significantly more megapixels, wider aperture, and more sizeable photon receptacle than most other smartphones in the market. Selfie-centric camera features are also present, including Beautify 4.0 for better yet natural-looking self portraits; filters and plugins; and selfie panorama.

The rear camera isn’t as robust, though it’s still highly capable at 13 MP f/2.2 with a 1/3.06 inch sensor.

    User Experience: 4/5

This isn’t the first phone to strut a MediaTek 6755 processor with 3 GB of RAM, so I wasn’t at all surprised with its mid-range performance. If anything, the lower spec’ed 1280 x 720 screen actually helps the silicone as it requires less calculation to run, especially with demanding games. As for benchmarks, it scored 41374 in Antutu and 3328 in PCMark. Sure those won’t blow you away, but they’re above decent and the phone remains cool even during heavy workload.

    oppo-f1s-selfie-sample

But does this phone live up to its selfie expert claim in the real world? Most definitely. Self-portraits are very clear and bright, and the front-facing camera has received its fair share of compliments from my friends.

    Value: 3.5/5

The Oppo F1s retails for PHP 12,990, significantly more expensive than some similarly spec’ed phone. However, you are getting a great all-arounder with a premium build and a beastly front camera for the price difference. If your selfie game has been feeling bland lately, this phone will pick up the slack.

    What’s Hot:

    • Premium aesthetics with glass and metal build
    • All-around performer
    • Selfie Expert tag is spot on
    • Remains cool to the touch

    What’s Not:

    • Pricing could be more competitive
    • Screen only has HD resolution

    Bottomline:

    • My album’s already full of great-looking selfies.Editor's Pick FINAL LOGO

    Restaurant Review: Green Pastures

    0

We all enjoy typical food like burgers, pizza, sandwiches, steaks and ice cream. I mean c’mon, who thinks about the calories when we can just savor the food? But, what about enjoying food without the guilt, even better, isn’t it? Comprising taste over health is not a problem anymore. Today, we give you a rundown of healthy eats.

    Green Pastures

Chef Robby Goco, who also handles Cyma, spearheads all the whole concept of Green Pastures – organic, fresh and local. In this restaurant, ingredients are sourced locally from local farmers and some are imported from Australia (i.e. for the meat), nonetheless, still organic. Customers are ensured of farm to table experience because the team personally handpicks the ingredients from partner farms and use these to create the nutritious and fresh menu.

Experience: Upon arriving, you will immediately be transported in a farm because the whole restaurant’s structure resembles a ranch – the wood installations, white picket fence, and some hanging pots of plants. To complete the look, the waiters also wear uniforms of cowboys.

To start off, they served Poke Bowl that consists of tuna poke, quinoa, avocado, kale, edamame, nori, 5-minute duck egg, sesame ginger lime dressing. This salad is just the salad that you might want to eat forever. All of the ingredients in this dish just complement each other. The tuna is fresh and in generous portions. You can really taste the freshness of the avocado. I cannot say a negative thing about this dish.

    gp5

Next is, Nost to Tail Cauliflower Bowl, which is Roast organic black pig sisig with broccoli rabe, sesame oil, pickled onion, liquid aminos, 142 degree egg served with garlic cauliflower rice. You think you’re eating rice? No you’re not. The flavorful cauliflower rice is a good alternative to rice because it is more savory and has way less calories. This is my favorite dish because the meat really packs a punch. The touch of pickled onions as an alternative to our native calamansi is brilliant because it tastes even better.

    gp4

Next is, Organic Mushroom Toast with sous vide egg, house made ricotta and cacciocavallo cheese. Go easy on this dish because the organic mushrooms have strong taste that others might find overwhelming. Nevertheless, this dish is great breakfast to start your day.

    gp6

For the mains, they served Muscovado Baby Back Ribs, which is a slow roast baby back ribs served with citrus muscovado glaze. The meat falls off the bone. Yes, it is that tender. It is a great feast for the whole family.

    gp1

For the adventurous, you can try their Strongman’s Kombucha tea infused with watermelon, lemon, chia seeds. This drink is known for its probiotic properties and for the guys, it increases libido. The taste is not absurd, it is actually delicious but it feels like you are getting drunk but take note that there’s no alcohol included. Well, maybe, that is the effect kicking in. Haha!

Writer’s tip: To anyone who wants to change their lifestyle, head on to this establishment. It might just change your life.
