2016 SikatPinoy National Arts & Crafts Fair

    0

The 2016 SikatPinoy National Arts & Crafts Fair, with its theme “Piling-Pling Likhang Pilipino,” will be held from October 26 to 30, at Megatrade Halls 1-3 at SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City.

This is the second of three national trade fairs scheduled for 2016, organized by the Department of Trade and Industry – Bureau of Domestic Trade Promotion (DTI-BDTP) to help promising micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), especially those from the regions, reach a wider domestic market and, hopefully, prepare them for the global export market.

Focusing on innovative expressions of Philippine arts and crafts across the regions of the country, the 2016 SikatPinoy National Arts & Crafts Fair has two main components: (1) Crafts that broadly refer, but not limited to, ornaments, jewelry, interior fixtures, fashion accessories, fabric, and related objects; and (2) Contemporary Art that crosses the conventional divide between art and craft.

Exhibitors were carefully chosen from the different regions based on stringent criteria. According to DTI-BDTP Director Rhodora M. Leaño, “We want the 2016 SikatPinoy National Arts & Crafts Fair to promote craft practices that are strongly rooted in local environments, but are, at the same time, responsive to the demands of a new global esthetic, attentive to cosmopolitan strategies, conscious of ecological issues, and open to experimentation in the area of material and design.”

The exhibition hall will be organized into four sections: (1) The Main Display section with a sampling of the products of exhibitors; (2) Exhibitors’ Booths; (3) Pods for Contemporary Art projects; and (4) Performance Areas with seating that will also serve as rest stations.

Expected to grace the formal opening on Wednesday, October 26, are Senator Juan Miguel “Migz” F. Zubiri, Trade, Commerce and Entrepreneurship and Cooperatives Committee Chairperson, Senate of the Philippines; Congressman Ferjenel G. Biron, M.D., Chairperson, Trade and Industry Committee, House of Representatives; and DTI Undersecretary for Industry Promotion Group Nora K. Terrado.

Admission to the 2016 SikatPinoy National Arts and Crafts Fair is free. For inquiries and more information, call the DTI-BDTP at 751-3223, or email [email protected].

Petron is official fuel of Formula 4 SEA Philippine Leg

    0

Oil industry leader Petron Corporation has been tapped as the official fuel of the Philippine Leg of the 2016 Formula 4 South East Asia (F4/SEA) Championship, scheduled to run from October 15-16 at the Clark International Speedway in Pampanga.

As the largest oil refining and marketing company in the Philippines and a leading player in the Malaysian market, Petron has made its mark as a fuel innovator, by creating a full range of gasoline and diesel fuels that deliver better power, better mileage, and better engine protection.

According to Petron Corporation President and CEO Ramon S. Ang, himself an avid motorsports enthusiast, “We are honored to be a part of the Formula 4 South East Asia championship, and we hope that the drivers will appreciate the power and other benefits of locally-manufactured and formulated Petron fuels.”

Promoted by the Asian Autosport Action (AAA) group headed by Peter Thompson, F4/SEA offers a cost-effective first step to an FIA-certified career ladder in formula racing. The F4/SEA program focuses on driver experience and development by ensuring a level playing field in a one-make FIA single-operator championship using FIA-F4 homologated race cars and engines. All drivers have access to race and engine data, and learn from race engineers and coaches, so winning is based on race craft and not performance aids. Meritus. GP provides race engineering services supported by race engineers, winning driver coaches, and professional technicians and mechanics.

The 2016 F4/SEA calendar kicked off last August with the first event at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia. The Philippine leg is the second event in the series, and will consist of six races. Drivers are expected to start testing and coaching on October 13-14 with the official events scheduled to commence on Saturday, October 15, before concluding on Sunday, October 16.

Subsequent legs are scheduled in Indonesia on November 11-13, Malaysia on December 9-11, Thailand on January 6-8, 2017, and concluding in Malaysia on January 20-22, 2017.

Carousell formally launches buy and sell app

Carousell, a startup mobile classified app from Singapore, has officially launched in the country after spending the last couple of weeks testing the local waters. Combining some of the biggest social media trends today such as square-photo-focused listings, chat-based transactions, and comment- and rating-enabled profiles, Carousell promises a refined buy and sell experience for its users.

    carousell-2

With intuitiveness at its core, the Carousell app boasts over 30 product categories ranging from fashion all the way to electronics. Further making it easier to get rid of any pre-loved items is its fast and easy signup method, in-app camera with built-in editing features, and less than 30 second listing time. Other conveniences, such as a field dedicated to specifying item delivery options (meetup or shipping) and instant sharing to your social media profiles, are also present.

Marcus Tan, co-founder and president of Carousell said, “Philippines is one of the hottest mobile commerce markets in Southeast Asia, due to a young and digitally-savvy population. As we consume more, there is also a pressing need to get rid of things we no longer have use for, many of which are still in good condition”.

“Carousell helps us give things we no longer need, a new lease of life with people who would treasure them more. This is a much more rewarding and sustainable approach to buying and selling, compared to excessive consumption. At the same time, scrolling through our marketplace is like rummaging through a box of surprises. There’s the thrill of discovering something that is rare and unique, from vintage cameras from the 1920s, to a painting by local artist Oscar Zalameda. Buying and selling has never been easier or more exciting,” he added.

Since it hit the Philippine Google Play Store and Apple App Store last May 2016, Carousell has experienced 110 percent month-on-month growth in listings and 240 percent month-on-month growth in transactions as of Q3 2016. Young as it is, Carousell also reached half a million Philippine listings in under six months, making the archipelago its fastest market to date.

Carousell is available for both Android and iOS devices, as well as for desktops through ph.carousell.com.

    • Network Standards: IEEE Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac
    • Radio Frequency Bands: 2.4 and 5 GHz
    • Ports: Power, internet, 4x ethernet, USB 3.0, and USB 2.0

    • Maximum link rate: 1300 Mbps
    • Processor: 1.4 GHz dual-core
    • Features: AC1900 MU-MIMO technology; simultaneous dual band; 3×3 AC; beamforming technology; three adjustable Wi-Fi antennas; Linksys Smart Wi-Fi app management
    • Price: PHP 10,590

If your ISP’s freebie router just isn’t cutting it for you, especially if you have tons of devices pinging it at the same time, then it’s time to upgrade. The default router your internet usually comes with can only handle a handful of devices at any given moment; it’s bound to drop connections every so often as it juggles its workload. As long as your router isn’t up to par—even if you have a 1 Gbps subscription—you won’t fully get what you’re paying for.

To do away with network bottlenecks, Linksys has equipped its newest Max-Stream EA8500 and EA7500 routers with the Multi-User Multiple-Input and Multiple-Output (MU-MIMO) wireless technology to ensure a stable connection even with simultaneous requests from multiple devices.

The more robust EA8500 broadcasts the Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac across the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz spectrums. It’s spec’ed for AC2600 speeds, meaning it can transfer data at a combined rate of 2600 Mbps through the two frequencies at 800 Mbps and 1733 Mbps respectively (rounded up).

It struts four adjustable Wi-Fi antennas, each broadcasting its own signal so you can cover the X, Y, and Z axes for maximum signal range and strength.

Meanwhile, the EA7500 struts the same Wi-Fi standard and dual band broadcast as its bigger brother, though this time at the tamer AC1900 speed. It’s still pretty fast for most users though, clocking in at 600 Mbps on the 2.4 GHz band and 1300 Mbps on the 5 GHz band. It also has only three antennas, though those are still enough to cover all directions sufficiently.

Both routers can be managed via Linksys’ web and mobile app. The app’s user interface is quite intuitive, allowing for easy network management (such as changing network name, password, broadcast band, etc.) and user management (such as allowing and blocking users). It also boasts remote management capability so you can monitor your router’s status even from far away.

    The Linksys Max-Stream AC2600 MU-MIMO EA8500 router retails for PHP 13,990, while the Linksys Max-Stream AC1900 MU-MIMO EA7500 router retails for PHP 10,590.

In pictures: Nikon launches official photography club, debuts D3400 camera

Nikon Philippines launched its local chapter of Nikon Club last October 8 at the Tao Corporate Center in Makati.

Nikon Club PH is the official photography club of Nikon Philippines which has recognized chapters all over the world.

To celebrate the occasion, veteran photographers and Nikon pros Ted Madamba, George Tapan and Raymond Cruz shared tips and secrets on taking great photos to the audience.

Interested photographers can apply for a two-year membership by paying a fee of PHP 1000. However, those who attended and signed up automatically get lifetime memberships.

In the event, Nikon also debuted its new DSLR camera, the D3400 which has a 24.2-megapixel DXI sensor which is derived from the higher-tiered D7200.

The camera’s ISO setting ranges from 100 to 25,600, and is able to shoot an average of 1200 shots per charge of its standard 1230 mAh battery pack.

The camera also supports Nikon’s SnapBridge App which syncs the DSLR to the user’s smartphone and automatically sends two-megapixel copies of photos taken with the date, time and location of their capture.

Four new Nikkor lenses were also launched with the camera: the AF-P DX 18-55 mm, 70-300 mm and their VR counterparts. The “AF-P” stands for “Autofocus Pulse” which is a brand new autofocus motor that is quieter and more precise—perfect for taking videos.

Volkswagen PH’s CSI campaign kicks off in Cebu on Oct. 15

    0

Volkswagen Philippines’ award-winning Child Safety Initiative (CSI) campaign crosses over to the Visayas region after successful runs in Metro Manila and key cities in Luzon.

On October 15 to 16, the CSI Visayas campaign formally activates at Robinsons Galleria Cebu, with Volkswagen Cebu facilitating the event kick-off.

The CSI advocacy highlights the Junior Driving Course, which features a miniature simulated roadway within a community, complete with road signages, stoplights, and Volkswagen push cars for the kids (ages 4 to 8) to use. Samples of child seats will also be on display at the Child Seat Corner.

Aside from the Junior Driving Course and Child Seat Corner, there will also be a “Pledge Wall,” where children and parents can sign their commitment to the slogan “Child road safety begins with me” using a 6×6-inch pledge sticker that they will sign and subsequently post at the Pledge Wall. Car stickers bearing a similar design as the pledge sticker will correspondingly be distributed as souvenirs to participants.

Representatives of CSI’s institutional partner, the Philippine Global Road Safety Partnership, will be on hand to share their insights on road safety.

Volkswagen’s official mascot, Wolfi, will likewise be present to greet and entertain the kids and parents.

Volkswagen Cebu will showcase the Tiguan SUV together with the Touran MPV. There will be special packages exclusive for those who will avail of during that weekend.

The CSI activation in Visayas is timely due to increased road activities, particularly in its highly urbanized areas, bringing up the number of traffic-related accidents.

Since its launch during the Manila International Auto Show in April 2015, the CSI campaign in Luzon has had a total of 6,791 children and 5,190 parents who participated in 32 venues. This child road safety advocacy increases awareness and imparts valuable lessons towards preparing the kids—along with their parents—to become responsible adult road users.

Visit Volkswagen Cebu at A. Soriano Avenue, North Reclamation Area, Cebu City for more event details and pre-registration or contact Chenne Pesiao (Customer Relations Associate) at  0906-2928315 and (032) 4012674.

IPC and PIA team up to keep students “off the streets and off to school”

    0

IPC (IP Converge Data Services, Inc.), a pioneer in local cloud and data center services, has just announced that it is now a partner of the Philippine International Aid (PIA), a U.S.-based charity that has been providing health and educational assistance to underprivileged youth.

One of the PIA’s core initiatives is the “Off the Streets-Off to School” scholarship, a program that helps parents and teachers to keep kids in school. Administered in partnership with the Phil-Asia Assistance Foundation, the Off the Streets–Off to School program provides scholarships annually to more than 1,000 children in Metro Manila.

Together with their partners, PIA helps students go through elementary and college. The student’s academic progress is monitored throughout the academic year and they are also encouraged to correspond with their respective benefactors.

Under the program, IPC will fund the school expenses of five students of the Eulogio Rodriguez Integrated School in Mandaluyong City. The funds provided will take care of tuition fees, books, supplies, field trip costs, uniforms, shoes, and allowances for meals and transportation.

“Supporting the Off the Streets-Off to School program was an easy decision for us because IPC is always looking for ways to use its resources and expertise to give back to the community,” said Reynaldo Huergas, president of IPC. “Everyone of us is very excited to be part of this amazing project. We know that a lot of students are forced to drop out of school because of money and hopefully with our partnership with PIA, we can help those students stay and learn so that they can have a better future.”

This is the second time that IPC has teamed up with a charity dedicated to help improve education. In 2014, they lent their cloud technology services to assist the Teachers for the Philippines in documenting and tracking the effectivity of their teaching programs.

Samsung halts production, sales and replacement of Note 7

In an official statement made earlier today, Samsung announced that it is asking carriers and retail partners to halt the sale and replacement of the Galaxy Note 7 as they “investigate the recently reported cases involving the Galaxy Note7.”

This comes after two major American telco service providers, AT&T and T-Mobile have decided to stop replacing the phones due to the increasing number of reports of replacement units catching fire with one incident resulting in an immediate evacuation of a plane in Louisville, Kentucky.

According to Korean news agency Yonha, Samsung has also stopped the production of new Note 7 units at its Vietnam plant which is responsible for global shipments of the phone.

Last week, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (US CPSC) told consumers to “immediately stop using and power down the recalled Galaxy Note7 devices” after Samsung has received at least 92 reports of overheating lithium batteries.
