On this date back in 1991, then 22-year old Linux Torvalds posted on Usenet (predecessor to modern internet forums) that he was working on an free operating system, adding that it was just a hobby, won’t be big and professional like gnu. 20 years on, his Linux operating system, while not as prolific on desktops and PCs as Windows or OS X, is powering 30% of tablets and 39% of smartphones today via the Android operating system that’s based on the Linux kernel. Without Linux, Android wouldn’t have been as prolific (and as free) as it is now. Our hat’s off to you Mr. Torvalds!
